    The thing I love about these blenders, they're basically just a heavy duty restaurant grade machine being sold to consumers. They haven't bothered to cheapen it one bit! But the customers tend to prefer paying for quality when buying these.

    They riveted the power semiconductors because they're in a high vibration environment. That screw is crawling out eventually, loctite or not!

    • @nicklemberger3101
      @nicklemberger3101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Why use Loctite or a rivet when you can cross thread a screw?

    • @KarlEller
      @KarlEller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I found it pretty odd that they riveted the triacs, but the motor windings are all loosey goosey. Those windings vibrating themselves to death seems like the primary failure mode for this long-term.

      I've seen plenty of riveted to-220 packages where the rivet spins around loosely after a decade. That, and pop rivets seem like such a good way to cause impact damage to the parts during installation. Idk though. I just read the app notes and pop the rivets into the heat sink like I'm told. Who am I to question?

    I've been abusing my Vitamix 3 to 4 times a week for over 15 years and it is still going strong. I agree it is a proper skookum choocher! But, then again, I haven't fed it a diet of rocks on a regular basis.

    • @robertopics

      All of them share the same innards. Although there were two different motors. The main difference between the pro and the household one is mainly due to the warranty.

      @Yoda63 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@robertopics It's my understanding that the pro version has a much beefier cooling system that allows it to run under full load basically continuously. I can attest from experience that the home model cannot do that without tripping the thermal overload.

    I have a vitamix that has been used at least once weekly (consumer) for the past 20 years. It still works incredibly well and it's been used to grind frozen food shoved into the blades with a plunger. The only thing is that the plastic pitcher has discolored quite a bit but still is strong.

      compare an off the shelf new versus old one at a "thrift store". In college, the 20 year old thrift store "find" would chop ice non stop for hours, new one from the mart, 10-20 minutes. Once I discovered how to "get" into the biology building after hours, their chopped ice machine was the king.

    We’ve had a Vitamix for about 10 years, getting daily use. I freaking love it. Before that we’d burn through a $100 competitor annually. We paid $500 for our current model, and since it’s going strong all this time later, it’s saving us money now (about $100 a year, I’d say).
    Anyway, I’ve wondered if you’d get around to a BOLTR on this brand. I was excited to see it, and happy to see its decent innards!

    I used Triacs before when I constructed a 15 Amps dimmer. Instead of triggering at the half wave only I used the full wave phase current control. That means I've got the full voltage all the time meanwhile I could control the output current, which was nice as a lightdimmer as well as controlling heaters and even motors (drills and anglegrinders), the lamps did not flicker at low load even.

    The Vitamix dial lets you quickly blend by creating laminar flow that drags down perpendicular to the blades. Slowly turn the dial from 1 up so that it maintains a nice smooth speed and sound. And if you load it right and add enough liquid, there's zero need for the tamper.

    a triac is a bi-direction device that works in both directions of AC. A SCR works in one direction. the triac is pretty much two SCR's back-to-back in a single package. If they use 2, they just wanted to add extra capacity.

    We used Vitamix, with the stainless container, to crush calcined material from the kiln before millong.
    Had to use the polycarbonate container for a low iron sample...
    Melted the container at the blade level.
    Note, most of the iron contamination was from the blades wearing.

    The zip ties may seem cheap, but it is because the thing is very user friendly as far as service. I was rebuilding my sister's Vitamix and had a guy from their tech department on the phone while he talked me through hardwiring the motor to test it. You can swap brushes, boards, and the whole motor if you are so inclined. I put a new motor in, and now my sister is back to making food for her family, and I have a disembodied Vitamix motor on my workbench, and I am trying to figure out what I can use it for. (Or what I should not use it for...)

    A TRIAC is a bi-directional device, you're thinking an SCR (aka Thyristor) that's unidirectional. Also with TRIAC/SCR once triggered, they stay on until the voltage goes back to 0 (which happens 60 times/sec). Motor control is done by delaying when you trigger the TRIAC from the point of the zero-crossing.

    Vitamix used to make (a long time ago) very stout blenders. These days they're still pretty good. It's weird they choose beefy components but cheap out on the god damn pots that comprise of the majority of the user interface.
    I've had 2 potentiometers fail just after warranty periods on my last two Vitamix.

    • @danl.4743
      @danl.4743 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My potentiometer is a little shaky too. Did you get a replacement from Vitamix or elsewhere?

    • @ALAPINO
      @ALAPINO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Da L. Their warranty service, surprise surprise, wasn't helpful after the warranty expired. They wanted a sizeable fraction of a new unit to repair this one. I ended up replacing the pots myself. Replaced them with something that was of decent quality.
      Let me guess: You're getting extremely erratic speed control?
      You can use any pot with the same resistive range. A few places online have the info you'll need if you're going to source itself. I don't recall what those figures were off hand.

    • @danl.4743
      @danl.4743 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you guessed right. The speed knob is a little "loose", wobbly, and if I move it side to side it affects the speed. Starting the Vitamix, the speed doesn't really change linearly from 0 to 4. Then it's ok. It started 1-2 years after I got the machine. It is still under the 7 years warranty, but I don't want to send it out. I'll just replace the potentiometer when I really have to. It's not a real problem now.

    • @ALAPINO
      @ALAPINO 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're out shipping and without a blender. It never actually becomes a problem, but a very expensive annoyance.
      Hope your eventual replacement goes well.

    your idea about the SCRs is a little off. The part about SCRs only conducting in one direction is correct. Silicon Controlled Rectifier, where rectifier is another name for diode. So what semiconductor manufacturers do is put two SCRs in one package, also called a triac. I don't think those two devices are individual SCRs configured as a triac.

    • @frankstevenson5013
      @frankstevenson5013 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could they be 2 thyristors ? A triac is basically 2 thyristors packaged into one IC.

    Two ics on an inductive load = scr which symbol looks like a diode with a wire in the mid, single one usually a triac which symbol looks like two diodes back to back with a control wire in the mid.

    Hopping onto this late, but I'd love to see more of these centered around kitchen appliances. We use Vitamix in most professional kitchens, but we also use Robot Coupe immersion blenders and food processors. If you have the inclination to get your hands on one, I would be interested to see a breakdown. They're considered the industry standard in terms of build quality but I've never seen the inside of one.
    You can find them here:

    I was wondering why you had a blackjack on your table... Also, I have to agree with your opinion on PC boards; Some of these things are like friggin works of art. I remember building computers and looking at the motherboards and graphics cards and things and just being amazed at what these circuits could do.

    I've been waiting for this one - one of the most expensive consumer kitchen tools. Most of the marketing going into the speed control (which is silly - as speed control tech is ridiculously inexpensive these days)

    • @wyattroncin941
      @wyattroncin941 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, their speed control is pretty scoocum. So they do have some factual wank to market.

    • @jakecarvey
      @jakecarvey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah - that's clear. The hype comes from the need to keep speeds low to satisfy "raw" diets, which maintain that
      high RPMs "cook" the raw food too much.
