Emmy, I bought the mac and cheese maker at a yard sale just yesterday afternoon. It's in almost-new condition and I got it for only twice what you paid (it was originally sold at CVS for $19.99). About 45 minutes ago, it hit me that I should look for a video review of it before attempting to use it and sure enough, this was at the top of the list! You're right about it being limited as to what you can cook in it (the instructions specifically tell you not to cook rice in it), but it has the potential to become an ubiquitous symbol of college dorm/bachelor pad life in America! With that thought in mind, SmartPlanet should also come out with the Ramen Noodle Nation ramen noodle maker! It would probably be the same thing, except with an off-white body and temperature dial, a red top and base and a different logo. Emmy, I've found that you can get the top off easiest by holding the body handle down with one hand and pulling up on the opened slot door with the other, although that's just when it's not running, so I'll have to find out when I try it out! I really enjoy your international MRE reviews. I have a Vietnam War surplus canteen, canteen cup and cup stovestand (they all nest together nicely inside the cover) plus a USGI mess kit. Have you ever thought about doing videos about field kitchens?
I think the mac and cheese maker is probably something college students would love. But, in regular households, WHY? Wait i can think of why, i had a lot of small appliances when i lived in a place with no stove, but, none were true unitaskers, but, i imagine you could make any pasta, rice and ramen in the mac and cheese nation. At least i would and saves on dishes to wash, it being plastic is not a great thing tho.
I always make a roux. Drain the pasta in a strainer and set aside. Melt butter in the pot, stir in the powdered cheese on low heat until its incorporated and clumped together. Slowly stir the milk into the mixture until smooth and return the pasta back into the pot, stirring until well combined. The cheese is much creamier this way. (: Try it! You might even learn to love Kraft mac and cheese Emmy.
I love mac and cheese of all types from boxed to homemade and everything in-between 🤤 If I'm making blue box, I always add 2 extra tablespoons of butter and I'll grate in some more cheese for extra gooey richness along with a teeny squirt of mustard for balance. 👍👍
As a Dutch person the whole cheese 'n mac thing is kinda lost on me, because I never had that...but this video made me aware that cooking things the old fashioned way is just as good as as doing it in those fancy objects :-D Thank you for this amazing video!!
gyqz, As a Canadian married to a Dutchman and living in the Netherlands, you're not missing much! My Canadian friends send me boxes of mac and cheese but other than childhood nostalgia, I get nothing out of it. It doesn't even taste good. If you want to try mac and cheese, Google a recipe for homemade and use some proper Dutch cheese!
Other than the off gassing of plastic smell. I can see this being useful for college dorm, truck driver or some who travels and stays in hotels alot. No need for a strainer. And to wash it just put water and soap in it and turn it on. Most things you would cook the paddle wouldn't be in the way. For $30 list price it should be better quality. But if I can find one for my son who is a truck driver or had I known about this for my husband. Would have. I can see frying small amounts of ground meat in it for stews of even tacos on the road. With the lid no splatter. But I think it should be a higher quality and it would be a great item.
Just some helpful info on this device for anyone curious: It was developed for disabled people who are in wheelchairs and/or have a motor control disorder like Parkinson's or cerebral palsy. The reason it's more accessible than a stovetop pot is these reasons - It can be placed much lower down on a short table the right height for a wheelchair, it can be very difficult for people with disabilities to grip a spoon to stir so the crank handle allows for stirring. Metal pots filled with water are heavy and it can be very difficult with people with low grip strength or shakiness to lift the pot off the stove and bring it to the sink to drain without dropping it or spilling it on themselves. It can all be taken apart easily and put into a dishwasher for low effort cleanup. It can also make lots of other food besides mac & cheese
I bet this would be great if you lived in a dorm or didn't have access to a stove top or microwave! I'm sure you could even scrap the lid apparatus and use it to make hot water for tea, coffee, or ramen with how fast it boils the water. Also my extra-creamy boxed mac and cheese secret is to stir up the cheese powder with the milk right as i put the noodles in the water, let it sit for a while and stir it every once in a while to let it fully dissolve into the milk, then add it to the buttered noodles at the end. I also like to add a slice of american cheese, or (ashamed to say) if I'm feeling extra naughty, two slices.
Just on the appearance it looks reeeeally cheap lol. I was concerned until you showed what you paid. When I see something that looks plasticky shiny and brightly colored it looks like a kids' toy.
To be honest, if you want to get the water for pasta boiled quickly, you can use a kettle, and then transfer the water into a pot. It only takes about 3 minutes. I always use this method when I want to cook pasta, because waiting for the water to come to the boil in a pot takes soooo long. I don't think I've ever actually had mac and cheese, btw. Some of the home cooked versions (not the boxed ones) look really good, so I would like to try it at some point.
I was all "What is this Savers place you keep speaking of" and then you showed the sticker and it clicked. Its Value Village up here in Canada (or VV Boutique if you want to class it up)
Rice is annoying to cook. Yes, give me a way to walk away from it and let it cook itself. The majority of pasta takes less than 10 minutes to cook. Not the same.
You can probably use it to hard boil eggs or Cook quick pasta dishes for yourself or your kids for lunch. Has a built in strainer has to be useful for something other then Mac n cheese. Or it can be used to cook lentils or rice since there is a built in paddle.
So weird because literally 2 hrs ago I made Mac and cheese and thought about how Emmy would describe the color of the cheese powder as “bright or neon orange”. Trippy!
Handy tip. Save the milk as the last ingredient added in. The way the package directs, cools down the cheese. Makes it liable to clumps, and powdery texture.... still it's a good show. I have a microwave square bowl. It's saving grace, it's a large ish bowl.
gundog4314 Hey! There's the guy who shares MREs and stuff with Emmy so we can see them too! Thankyou sir! Do you eat the 50yr old ones too? Lol.😍 I love those vids! PS I don't think I'd eat it either.😂
My favorite Mac and cheese is baked. Boil a ton of shell noodles and place in a foil baking pan. Get 3 or 4 types of cheeses and mix with noodles ( gets shredded and cut up chunks of cheese. My favorites are sharp cheddar, Colby jack and American.) Next depending on how much Mac and cheese you have, crack 3-4 eggs and mix well. Next mix some milk in to ensure it’s not too dry. There should be quite a bit of milk. Next put a ton of paprika to make a pretty and crunchy top. Bake for approx 30 min until the top looks crunchy. This is one of those recipes grandmama and mom make with no exact measurements yet it tastes amazing each time. We usually only eat it during thanksgiving so it’s extra fun an special ☺️
Oh man that mac and cheese maker would be really handy in a dorm! When I was in school we weren't allowed toaster ovens or burners and hot plates in the dorms because they all have open areas that get really hot and were considered a fire hazard. With this it looks like everything that gets hot (minus the pot) is covered so I wonder if it'd be allowed.
7 minutes is too long... 5 and a half is better.. otherwise the pasta is mushy! and just a splash of milk and about a 1/3 of a cup of butter... to make it super cheesy... Comfort food at its best!
Goodness, I only use a splash of milk and a tablespoon of butter .-. Although really though, it's all on your preferences. It's pretty clear Emmy isn't fond of Mac because of how processed it is :) Everyone has the right to their own opinions.
A Mac & cheese making machine that makes packet mac & cheese. Seems a waste. The idea of the packet is to make it simple anyway. I assumed from the title it'd make it from scratch.
This would forsure be useful in a dorm situation. I would almost even suggest it being helpful with kids just learning to cook while avoiding the open flame (on a gas stove), however the heating element with the plastic unit seems to be a potential danger. This ones a flip/flop for me, but the fact that it worked at all was rather impressive.
Emmy, the steam escaping thru the lid is a "feature", you can give yourself a facial while cooking, also works great if you are congested and what's better than Mac n Cheese when you are under the weather lol
One of my favorite cheat day meals is mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs. Or adding bacon bits is also really good. Fyi, adding the butter and stirring it in before adding the milk is a little easier to incorporate the cheese powder.
Actually, cutting up the butter will help it to melt down faster. I usually cut up the butter and put it in the measuring cup with the milk while the noodles are cooking. Also, you can always add spices to customize your mac and cheese to your liking.
kate carew yes!!! I'm a college student and most of the time all I do is cooking. (Not such boxed stuff though.-except for the occasional Ramen) my favourite things are: stove, little oven, and rice cooker. Like that I can make every meal there is from fried chicken to salad, and from soup/broth to quiche & cookies. Not to mention bread. Or I use it to warm up pizza ;) www.fissler.com/de/produkte/details/obst-und-gemuseschneider/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIm7m3nL-72QIVqbDtCh3AEwDAEAAYASAAEgL3PPD_BwE Oh and this mixer! It doesn't use electricity. It makes vegetable soup smooth, it chops onions and herbs. So I can even make pesto. But maybe a hand blender would be a nicer option. Cause then one can make smoothies and milkshakes too. If someone gave me this weird thing I would not only be lynced by the Italians that used to live with me when I was in the dormitory ^^ but also I wouldn't really know what to do with it. And plastic and hot temperatures are not really trustworthy. And I think that a pot with lid would cook faster than that too.
kate carew You cant have cooktops in most dorms. no cook tops and no hot plates. Some dorms are so strict that this thing might not be allowed unless it has auto-shut off.
+CcakeAsh well darn it! I went to college so long ago I'd be foolish to think that hadn't changed :( Bummer, they don't stay hot but then again they are electrical and pans can boil over etc. Sigh...they shouldn't allow blow dryers either!! Well, I'd say not to get this contraption since Emmy made it very clear it had an odor emanating from it, and ingestion of plastics is no good, especially plastics that have been heated! Maybe a microwave and some glass Pyrex dishes would be a good option for him? And a potholder because those glass bowls get HOT!!
I wonder how the plastic doesn't melt with the heating unit being right under it. also, I would totally take the nation Mac N Cheese if the water comes to a boil faster. hahaha I just saw you stab a box of mac n cheese😂😂😂😂
Those types of gadgets seem super silly when you have a full kitchen, but in college a pasta pot was one of the best things I had as freshman in college. We weren't allowed to have heating plates or open heating elements, but we could have pasta pots, electric kettles, etc. I tended to make ramen and spaghetti, though, because also didnt have a refrigerator for milk and butter. Lol.
I am curious about the clean up on that Mac and Cheese pot, it looks like its heating element is being cooked on, and would be hard to clean up, besides not coming apart, and being fully submersible. I use a 14 inch nonstick wok (stone like coating) to make mine, makes it a lot easier and it comes right out of the pot with no problem. Most apartments in Korea come with only two burners and limited counter space to cook, so a lot of gadgets are not possible.
If you buy a pot or something like this and it does not sit firmly check the lead in the bottom of the base. Most will have clips and cut outs so that you can have as much lead to go to the plug socket and the direction? A pot like this is probably handy as it leaves another saucepan empty and the plastic pot should clean better?
A stoner would burn themselves with that thing. If they didn't drop boiling water all over themselves they'd throw steaming hot mac n cheese into their face getting the lid off.
It’s just a Sunbeam kettle with a fancy lid. I love my Sunbeam kettle because it boils water so fast. But that’s all I use it for - heating water - because yeah, the washing issue.
Washing the mac and cheese maker properly with hot water and soap soak before use would have taken the plastic smell away I think! But who knows till you try!
I love it. I had a similar pot called a Hot Pot Express, just didn't have the slotted lid with the spatula crank, wasn't specifically for mac n cheese, it cost me $11 brand new. i would make ramen, canned soups, rice, tea, hot dogs.... really anything that could be boiled. I even managed to make a simple red beans and rice in it. I wish my pot had had a slotted lid with a spatula crank. At the time lived with my ex in a house that his parents owned and rented rooms in. We had the master bedroom with a huge bathroom (long bathroom counter, lots of room). I didn't like to go to the kitchen to make things if i could avoid it because the renters didn't take care of it, and I even once found a mouse hiding in the oven. It saved me from having to clean up after people and make my own meal only for them to destroy it in a matter of days. I also had a mini fridge, since they also would just take whatever was in the main fridge. Roommates can really suck sometimes. I now have a T-fal pot to boild hot water (ramen cup o noodles, tea, instant coffee and anything else that just requires hot water) to avoid carrying hot water up stairs and for whenever I get sick, and I generally use it daily. These types of pots have just improved my life so much.

I feel like Emmy is going to raise the most well behaved children with a passion for life. Shes such a wholesome person
The title should be “Mac and Cheese Box Durability Test” 😂
😂😂😂
I always make a roux. Drain the pasta in a strainer and set aside. Melt butter in the pot, stir in the powdered cheese on low heat until its incorporated and clumped together. Slowly stir the milk into the mixture until smooth and return the pasta back into the pot, stirring until well combined. The cheese is much creamier this way. (: Try it! You might even learn to love Kraft mac and cheese Emmy.
mac and cheese maker would turn into a Romen maker for me.
Renee Brown I swear I just said this out loud.... You must be a genius because great minds think alike
Renee Brown I was thinking the same thing
Ramen. Not romen
Destiny JJFish that’s wild cause my brain corrected that for me and I didn’t realize it was spelled incorrectly until this comment.
Would it be like those sponge pill capsules you throw in water and suddenly you have a dinosaur but it's with ancient Roman soldiers?
I love mac and cheese of all types from boxed to homemade and everything in-between 🤤
If I'm making blue box, I always add 2 extra tablespoons of butter and I'll grate in some more cheese for extra gooey richness along with a teeny squirt of mustard for balance. 👍👍
I’m calling the cops for you stabbing that mac and cheese box lol
Chip Skylark yeah Asian decent ppl are very strange . I lived with one and they are brash with certain things and it makes my nerves jump.
I listened to this right before bed and feel so zen. It`s like being on the phone with an old friend. Love you em! and now I want mac n cheese
As a Dutch person the whole cheese 'n mac thing is kinda lost on me, because I never had that...but this video made me aware that cooking things the old fashioned way is just as good as as doing it in those fancy objects :-D
Thank you for this amazing video!!
gyqz, As a Canadian married to a Dutchman and living in the Netherlands, you're not missing much! My Canadian friends send me boxes of mac and cheese but other than childhood nostalgia, I get nothing out of it. It doesn't even taste good. If you want to try mac and cheese, Google a recipe for homemade and use some proper Dutch cheese!
Je kunt het kopen bij Albert Heijn!
Omg, I'd love a wheel of baby Gouda right now! :)
The mac and cheese maker could be useful in a place where there's electricity but no stove.
Just get a hot plate.
Yeah but same with a rice cooker, hot pot, crock pot, instant pot, etc and they wouldn't seep harmful plastic chemicals in your food. :)
Dorm?
microwave?
Like a college dorm.
Emmy, the box stabing method killed me.... lol!!! Great video♡
Could have used that in college for my ramen...
-We used the old-style metal pot popcorn popper for ramen, soup and about anything else you would normally use a saucepan for.
small tip: some drops of oil and a pinch of salt make them taste better, prevents sticking and reduces the foaming by a lot!
Its Value Village up here in Canada (or VV Boutique if you want to class it up)
Stephen Smith Value Villâge!
Sarah Jasper Gotta extend that U as well. Valoo Velâge dahling
I love Emmy so much 😂 especially when she just started stabbing the box like it was nothing 😂
"Why you would need one of these"
I ask the exact same thing of rice cookers.
Rice is annoying to cook. Yes, give me a way to walk away from it and let it cook itself. The majority of pasta takes less than 10 minutes to cook. Not the same.
@@smol-one I've never found rice difficult to cook. I make rice almost every day.
Well, rice cooker is multitask devices, yes it cook rice but you can use it to make soup, pasta, or stew
@@theonlyrifai a pot can do that, too.
@@diy_cat9817 But you have to watch it??? its so u can walk away while its cooking
You can probably use it to hard boil eggs or Cook quick pasta dishes for yourself or your kids for lunch. Has a built in strainer has to be useful for something other then Mac n cheese. Or it can be used to cook lentils or rice since there is a built in paddle.
Yeah, I'm not sure why they make those types of devices out of plastic.
Hehe....! Emmy getting violent with that box! 😆
At the end of the day, old school metal pot for the win!
I feel like the Mac and cheese makers would be gd for a college student
There’s many better ways
So weird because literally 2 hrs ago I made Mac and cheese and thought about how Emmy would describe the color of the cheese powder as “bright or neon orange”. Trippy!
Yey!! Mac cheese....my kids love it!I open the boxes the same way ...stab,stab,stab😉
Melissa Berry Why doesn’t anyone just pull on the top it’s really not that hard
You don’t have to stab the macaroni it’s already dead
... make your mcncheese faaaabbbb....
An Emmy video to take me out of my winter blues! ❤️ You!
5:50 sounds like the opening of a Seinfeld episode.
Oh my god.
Handy tip. Save the milk as the last ingredient added in. The way the package directs, cools down the cheese. Makes it liable to clumps, and powdery texture.... still it's a good show. I have a microwave square bowl. It's saving grace, it's a large ish bowl.
Emmy went savage on the box lol
The mac maker would be for dorms or small studios that might not have ovens/stoves or even a camper
"Press here" is a lie!!!!! Lol
Absolutely.
I am not a Mac & cheese fan either. I did score my induction burner at the Good Will for $5.00.
If Emmy made mac & cheese in a potty that would be epic but I wouldn’t eat it haha!
gundog4314 HAHA got em! :)
o...kay....
gundog4314 Hey! There's the guy who shares MREs and stuff with Emmy so we can see them too! Thankyou sir! Do you eat the 50yr old ones too? Lol.😍 I love those vids! PS I don't think I'd eat it either.😂
TypicalJAFO Well crap. I hope its the same guy! You make me think I screwed up.😬😽
TypicalJAFO 👍😂
We usually only eat it during thanksgiving so it’s extra fun an special ☺️
emmy make a bloopers compilation video!!! so funny
IKR?
Oona Finegan --- hey Oona! Like your name!! Yes! A bloopers video would be great Emmy!! 😋😂🤗😘
K Prince that's your way. people have different preferences
Agreed! I do a the same time, 1/4 cup milk, and 2 tablespoons of butter.
Goodness, I only use a splash of milk and a tablespoon of butter .-. Although really though, it's all on your preferences. It's pretty clear Emmy isn't fond of Mac because of how processed it is :) Everyone has the right to their own opinions.
If you add a slice of American cheese and melt it in there it will be even cheesier
louisart. Thats what i do...tear up a slice of American cheese and stir it in until its melted and incorporated.
Did you add any salt to either pot of water?
A Mac & cheese making machine that makes packet mac & cheese. Seems a waste. The idea of the packet is to make it simple anyway. I assumed from the title it'd make it from scratch.
wwaxwork it's so you don't need a stove. That's supposed to be the convenient part apparently lol
"I don't like mac and cheese"
Well yeah you made Kraft
Lol that's true though 👁👄👁
Totally agree! Looks like it works, but harder to clean
Mmm...Mac 'n cheese juice :)
Cademan Caden *shudder*
Emmy, the steam escaping thru the lid is a "feature", you can give yourself a facial while cooking, also works great if you are congested and what's better than Mac n Cheese when you are under the weather lol
Can't believe you don't like mac and cheese. Do you like home made baked mac and cheese?
Nope.
emmymadeinjapan 😱
One of my favorite cheat day meals is mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs. Or adding bacon bits is also really good.
Fyi, adding the butter and stirring it in before adding the milk is a little easier to incorporate the cheese powder.
i can feel the nano-plastic in my lungs
Actually, cutting up the butter will help it to melt down faster. I usually cut up the butter and put it in the measuring cup with the milk while the noodles are cooking.
Also, you can always add spices to customize your mac and cheese to your liking.
“Im not a huge mac and cheese fan” Me neither 😂 I’ve never heard anyone else say that I’ve always been alone on that opinion
Nobody in our house likes it. 🤷🏻♀️
emmymadeinjapan nobody in our house will eat it either😂
Im the only one in my house who doesn’t like it😂
I don't like mac and cheese either, so no you're not alone :D
I grew up loving it, so I tried to give it to my daughter and she wouldn't touch it lol. Still, at 7, she hates it. I don't enjoy it anymore either.
"Wow, look at that bright neon color... amazing.." 😂 I love your positivity Emmy
*Potmaker*
HAHAHAHAHA I love you Emmy
😂😂😂
So relieved I found someone else that isn’t a Mac and cheese fan! Thank you for admitting it!
I'm getting this for my son in college.
Bethann Bickel you’re a good mom. Lol
Bethann Bickel noooo! Just get him an induction cook top, so much better than a hot plate and he can cook all the time, simple, fast easy foods!
kate carew yes!!! Or I use it to warm up pizza ;)
www.fissler.com/de/produkte/details/obst-und-gemuseschneider/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIm7m3nL-72QIVqbDtCh3AEwDAEAAYASAAEgL3PPD_BwE
Oh and this mixer!
I went to college so long ago I'd be foolish to think that hadn't changed :(
Bummer, they don't stay hot but then again they are electrical and pans can boil over etc.
The wonderful knife demonstration was worth the whole video.
I wonder how the plastic doesn't melt with the heating unit being right under it. also, I would totally take the nation Mac N Cheese if the water comes to a boil faster. hahaha I just saw you stab a box of mac n cheese😂😂😂😂
Rae Higgins if she would have put a lid on the pot it would have boiled much faster too.
Lol.
Emmy have you ever had baked mac and cheese? It beats the boxed stuff by miles.
Sorry to report I have, and I still don't like it.
6:25 So glad that I’m not the only one who drains using the lid! Saves on dishwashing! Colanders are a pain!
Thirty bucks to make fake mac n' cheese? I agree, Emmy. Pass.
@@tristandelacruz2213 He meant the odd plastic pot.
She said "efficacy" a word not often used anymore in the English language.
jody024 it's used a lot in scientific papers. I know researchers that use it, probably for that reason
Perfect stoner gift! 👌😂
Gold Dust I don't have that much energy when I'm baked. Give me a cool cereal bowl and I'm good.
A stoner would burn themselves with that thing. If they didn't drop boiling water all over themselves they'd throw steaming hot mac n cheese into their face getting the lid off.
Better stoner gift: a small rice cooker. It's actually ten times easier to use than this contraption and the mac n cheese is glorious
Fizzle She mentioned she washed it, there's just not much hope for such cheap plastic while being heated.
