    Do you consider this a “real” C64 game since it can’t be played on a stock system?

      Of course , yes. Is Starfox a real SNES game because it uses a SFX chip? This just needs external hardware to assist.

    • @phat-kid
      @phat-kid ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i'm excited to see what homebrew games are made for these old systems with all the upgrades that are possible these days. most people would have to play them in emulators, but it's really cool to see these machines pushed to the limits and not just with demos.

    • @phat-kid
      @phat-kid ปีที่แล้ว +5

      and yeah if i went through the trouble to get the upgrades you damn well bet i would consider this a real commodore 64 game. it would just be in my homebrew folder not in my classic games folder.

    Once the Genesis came out, I had a hard time convincing anyone that the Master System even existed; almost nobody had one here in the US. I had both this and Sonic 2 on Game Gear, and I'll confirm it: the SMS versions are a lot easier to play. Absolutely worth checking into, too; they're a little hard to get used to, because they're very different from the 16-bit Sonic games, but they were built for the strengths of the hardware they're on, so if you take them as their own thing, they're a lot better. This C64 version looks interesting; I've never used a Commodore 64 (we had an Apple II CE instead), but I really like how dark the Jungle Zone looks.

      Everyone listen to Mommy Kojiro, these games _rock!_ I owned Sonic 2 on Game Gear and I think I borrowed Sonic 1 (the better of those two) once.

    • @jkeelsnc
      @jkeelsnc ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously the SMS and NES systems had a superior graphics chip. However, with the correct programming the C64 can do pretty well and actually has a good sound chip for the time. It is amazing what these programmers did with the port of Sonic to the C64. It was a capable 8 bit system in the hands of good programmers who knew how to push the limits of the hardware.

    I'd love to try this out on my real c64. Cloning the SuperCPU, REU, and other rare hardware expanders for the c64 are on my "to-do" list right now, so this game may be a good test for those once I get some prototypes going.

    I was part of The Orange Cartridge Kickstarter, this is a software defined C64 cartridge. The creator (Marcus Comstedt) sent it out with the Super-REU bitstream loaded into the cartridge and it runs Sonic the Hedgehog perfectly! I sure hope someone can take Marcus' work and turn The Orange Cartridge into a commercial product.

    "It's a little on the easier side"
    Hmm, don't underestimate some parts of the game. Because of the lack of rings, all the boss battles don't allow you to take any hit and some spots require precise jumps and even leaps of faith. If you 've never played it then chances are, you're gonna see the Game Over screen quite a few times.

  • @jkeelsnc
    @jkeelsnc ปีที่แล้ว

    Modern games need to take more advantage of the REU's not only because of the extra memory but the magic of the DMA chip in the REU which allows massively faster transfers of graphics and game code into the C64. The DMA is a big deal that makes this game possible. I wonder how many other Sega Master System games could be ported like this to the C64+REU?

    I've always had a soft spot for the Master System version of Sonic 1. Yes, noticeably easier and not as speedy as the Mega Drive games, but they are still really good and extremely accessible. And the music for Bridge Zone is memorable (partly because Janet Jackson appears to have ripped it off)

    • @genyakozlov1316
      @genyakozlov1316 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering that in Marble Zone you can walk in lava using invincibility frames, while Brige Zone just kills you if miss a jump, as well as Jungle Zone's random waterfalls and the entirety of Sky Base, it's definitely not easier than the 16-bit version.

  • @JoypadDivison
    @JoypadDivison ปีที่แล้ว

    I consider it a real C64 game. Granted I had a C64 and never heard about the memory expansion till today... I've been aware of the SuperCPU since the 90s though... since that is an aftermarket product I have a harder time thinking of any game that requires it as a real C64 game.
    That he got that game to run like that on the 6502 at 1mhz is hard to comprehend, a port to the NES would be awesome, I hope that happens.

    Modern REU's on the C64 are already common, in that they are a feature on a device called the Ultimate II+, originally a floppy disk emulator that plugs into the cartridge port of the C64, but it has an amazing amount of features today, like cartridge emulation, modem emulation, ability to use custom kernals, and also a 16MB REU.

    it's a shame though that a lot of videos on the net (like this one) have their brightness FAR too high on C64, resulting in extremely washed out colors (dark grey is basically light). A real C64 was 'pastel' but not this extreme. A result of Vice being too 'bright' on and HDTV's I think. Take a look at this one, its a lot closer: th-cam.com/video/_Cg8r-VmeMk/w-d-xo.html
