    If your VHF has an aux port in the back then you can install a small cheap speaker in the cockpit and plug it in via aux cable. i have one in my cockpit that allows me to hear the radio on the helm even when it's connected down below.

    Antenna is everything. If no audio etc. then the coax is damaged, antenna is not plugged either into the antenna or into the radio. I'm an Amateur Radio Operator. I'd borrowed a SWR meter to see if the issue was coax or antenna.

      That could be the case. We thought that could potentially be the issue but it would involve sending someone up the mast... which we may do. But so far it seems to be working again! So fingers crossed it stays that way.
