    • @gg4y

I think part of the success will be the fact that environmental costs are incerasing and increasing, so that plastic recycling turned to be a saving VS buying and producing and dumping, especially for cities dislocated along rivers.
I think they runa pivot, clearning the ocean is still too costly, so they will focus on rivers, and make deals with countries with severepollution problems and lack of tech infrastrcutre to implement environmental policies => south east asia.
Same idea was unfortunately not economically feasible years ago.
Unfortunately, the economic context is still priority over any environmental action, that is why a private company was able to step in NOW (and not just 10 years ago) VS governments.
Keep in mind the business enablers are always the same people with increadible concentrated wealth. (Thiel gang).
But he's good and he's playing his cards, surfing the millenials / generation-z storytelling "young-smart-leader" that yield visibility.
I don't like much the last part, because there are a lot that will sell lies to gain visibility and wealth (like it happened with crypto), but still the goal is good, and so It is real good to see a new kind of perspective.

And, sadly, most of my fellow Taiwanese don't really care about the world.
      (但是,很不幸地,我大部分的台灣同胞不那麼在意世界。)
Hopefully Taiwan can become increasingly globally-aware and globally-competitive.

Although I agree with you,the past generations had lost interest in ALL of the rewards this jewel we call Earth has to offer, and get to work saving or restoring what we have left.Granted there are many who do,(you and I included). But my Father who fought in WWII said these words when my son was born..."I hope his generation does more to save this planet than mine did.",which to me implies that this problem has been around for way too long.My once dedicated country, the U.S.,has been taken over by a mindless spoiled brat who feels he and his millionaire buddies are for some reason above such tree hugging ideas. It is up to us,young and old,to get together, unite and work against the continued plastic accumulation that will someday be our demise.

However, we'll never be able to clean our oceans 100 % as long as we (every single person on this planet) keep on consuming plastic in such high volumes as we do, continuously creating enormous amounts of new plastic trash that will end up in rivers, seas and oceans.

Are you kidding? It was the government that locked up a guy's patent who had a car working on recycled WATER. The froze Tesla's patents a century ago because he had found a way to pull free energy from the AIR - I forget exactly what scientists today estimate but it's some phenom amount like a cubic yard of "free" energy in the molecules surrounding us to power NYC for a year. No, my friend, governments are the problem... they fear an economic collapse of astronomical proportions if we ever lose our need for fossil fuels. It is sickening and it will take Boyan's generation to STOP this rape of our planet, change politics, change corporate structures, and cure them before we self destruct.

Applause is a learned social arm twisting mind pain , it breaks the spell( suggestion), of what the presenter is attempting to place in our mind set think. An, example of a better understanding on this take is,
In other societies, loud multi explosions are used to drive the bad spirits away ! In events of importance .
Rethinking on this level will show it's a waste of stage time to have the speaker deal with the loud interruptions of trains of thought.
Will see a decline in clapping with a sonic hand boom . Even at the end of the presentation . It, then will allow for more continues thought ! Not , the shut down that happens now, after the speaker has ended the think ,
      Think about it !

As a student in Hong Kong I am writing this in full support of Boyan Slat and his idea...
“First we had the stone age, then the bronze age and now we are in the middle of the plastic age”, this is a quote from the ted talk by Boyan Slat. This means a lot and we should all take this into account. We use far to much plastic and it needs to stop before it gets out of control.
As we saw in the talk, we produce 300 million tons of plastic a year and this is a phenomenal amount especially if we consider that if we keep going at this rate we will have no life left in the oceans. This is why I am in full support of this talk. We need fish, we need animals that eat these fish, we need the animals who eat those fish because, at the top of the food chain we have us. Fish is one of the main parts of our diets but with all of this plastic in the oceans, there will be no fish left. This is why we need this idea and we need to execute it now.
As we found out in the video, plastic is something that we use everyday, wether it be from a lunch bag, a plastic drinking bottle or even the wrapper of our favourite chocolate bar, plastic is everywhere! Everyone in society has dropped at least one piece of rubbish at some point in their lives, this could be old, middle aged people or us, the main problem - teenagers.
We saw in the Ted Talk that plastic will always find a way into a stream, these streams then feed into a river, these into the rivers estuaries which open out to sea. 71 percent of the world is covered by water, the oceans take up a whopping 96.5 percent of this water and it is all polluted in some shape or form. And it’s easy to stop it at the source but as we have found out, nobody seems to care, they just say “oh it’s the next generations problem” and it really will be if we are stupid enough not to make a start now.
The oceans have 5 main gyres that keep the water spinning all over the world. These gyres in fact are the main problem. Because all of the rubbish is in the sea it means that it has to pass through one of these gyres and as we have found in the talk this is a big problem. The rubbish forms into massive patches in the middle of the ocean and if a fish or any other sea creatures were to swim into one of the rubbish patches they would be poisoned and would probably die from it.
We need to embrace this solution and accept that we as human beings were the ones who started this so for the sake of the animals and us. If we don't fix this global problem right now it will never be fixed. If we don't start cleaning up the oceans they will become overpopulated with rubbish patches not algae. Next time you throw a plastic bottle in the stream just remember that small bit of rubbish in that stream from a plastic bottle can help contribute to a far bigger problem. This is a problem that can be fixed, by our generation and as we heard from Boyan Slat this is a profitable option to take so why not give it a try?

We spend 300 billion dollars on climate change when global starvation is able to be fixed with 30 billion per year. • @firenationfiles2063
      @firenationfiles2063 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Wonderful quote, yet some people still choose to ignore it. Sure, this situation is quite complicated, with the whole thing about "money" and "costs" and "profit" and "it's not a big problem, let's leave it to the next generation," but simply put, *THE EARTH IS BEING DESTROYED.* It may seem like it's happening slowly and therefore isn't a big deal, but it is _definitely_ happening. And yeah, *it is a big deal.* Can't we humans do _just_ a little more to save our _own_ planet? Even though we are going to colonize Mars in the near future, Earth is *our* home. We simply cannot run from the pollution problems _we_ created. Let's hope our species can save our _home_ before the last tree is cut down, the last fish is eaten, and the last stream is poisoned, causing humans to finally realize that *WE CANNOT EAT MONEY.*

Cour Barone How? Because ideas and words are meaningless in this context. Speaking and thinking are not the same as constructing and managing. A million good ideas are created everyday, next to zero are ever implemented. This kid is a good kid, but he has no plan, no procedure for implementation. Nobody dislikes him, but many - including me - dislike that TED Talks have given him way too much praise and attention, when what he needs is an education and some training in engineering and biology.
As you say - "DO IT." OK, How? How does this get done? What materials? How will the construction proceed? Are you remotely aware of the scope of an engineering project such as this? I am not dogging you, I just know that most people never even think about issues like stregth f materials, construction procedures, etc. It's not all about funding...

Alan Munro It's not negative, its naive and doesn't even address the problem this bright kid is trying to solve. Firstly, not using plastic is completely unrealistic in the foreseeable future. Secondly, even if we used less plastic it wouldn't clean up what's already in the ocean. Think.

I'm giving it a thumbs down after I finish this post. All he did was banter on and on about the problem and then, as an afterthought, threw out his vague plan to collect the plastic. What then? How is it transported? Did he figure those costs into his magic 500 million? How will these platforms be anchored as stationary? surely not anchored to the sea floor? Solar energy can not possibly propel those platforms fast enough to beat the current.

The two big issues that I see are:
    1) You have to have governments CARE about this problem. They can always hand you a list of their more pressing problems which are starving for funds: healthcare, education, immunization, defense, infrastructure, air pollution, on and on.
    2) All maritime vessels need to be willing to detect and avoid the booms. One third-world freighter with a newbie captain or a stoned navigator could wreck a boom.
