Let me start by saying how much I appreciate your channel! I have never joined any other channels. You are the exception! I was introduced to amateur radio 30 years ago but never got started. I never knew anyone to guide me. Thanks to you I now have 8 radios and my GMRS license. I'm working on my ham license. Your channel is informative and humorous. I'm a huge Baofeng fan so keep up the great work!
me to, this is a great way to get into Ham and civilian radio. I was a Navy Radioman for 7 years, and been wanting to get back into radio again. Allot has changed since the 1980s, except the available frequencies.
Although you seem to care not about spurious emissions, the irony here is that your channel is one of very few TH-cam channels that seems to avoid that very thing. Bravo. Two unlocked radios now in my cart.
Enjoying the new hair look. Looking forward to how far this style will go. Beards are great and will add distinction, increased wisdom and the chicks love facial hair. Thanks Randy for all you do for the Radio world!

I have one of these and the $10 Abbree smacktical 18" antenna- works great on all 3 bands, better than my Nagoya tri band antenna. great pairing for this cool radio
We live in a great time. This radio is $30. I could not even IMAGINE (Despite using...umm substances..) having any thing CLOSE to it's versatility in 1977 when I first got into radio.
I own a couple of the earlier versions of the AR-5RM but just ordered another one through your affiliate link since they upgraded it. Can't wait to try it out!
Based on this video I purchased the UV-5G Plus and it's a great radio -- as long as you don't try to read the display while outside. Doesn't matter how good the stuff in the lightholes of your skull are, the color screen simply cannot be read in sunlight and it's pretty hard to read the small red type on the menu settings options even in a dark room. I hope the folks at Boofwwang in Japan make a revised version of this radio but with the same kind of display as is on the UV-5G Pro (which I'm told is the same as the UV-5R that I've frequently seen in the wild) since that has all of the informations I need to see when actually operating the radio... and the fact I can see it in direct sunlight is a real plus.
I think we should start a go fund me account to buy the Secret Service a bunch of Baufeng radios. They may be cheap Chinese radios, but they are a whole lot better than what they had for communication at the Butler PA rally.
Besides the watts and flashlight/GPS, what are the available TX frequency differences between the new BF F8HP PRO and the BF AR-5RM? Both are UNLOCKED HAM radios and seem to TX on the exact same frequencies. Please advise. I am hoping to pull the trigger and buy one this before Thanksgiving. Would the TD H3 be a better option to have as far as the number of frequencies that can be accessed to transmit?
Grrrr I bought an Ar-5RM a week or so ago, so ordered another 2 pack, but accidently got the UV-5RM's. Returning them for the AR versions. I like this radio a lot compared to the UV-5R. For a few dollars more its well worth it I think. The scramble feature is neat.
This looks like the BEST walkie-talkie EVAR! 'buttons' are pronounced, Butt-ins! Just ordered two radios from your affiliation link. You probably get a brazilian dollars from it. Great review, thanks!
CB on the UV-K5 and TD-H3 are only marginal at best. Lack of a matched antenna makes them suffer on RX, plus TX is useless because they aren't setup for it. Unfortunately with P25 there are licensing fees for the voice codes that's why you don't see any low end P25 radios.
@@RKingisP25 (Project 25) systems are designed to meet the operational voice and data requirements for critical communications during disasters, terrorist threats, and other natural catastrophes. They also work well for everyday communications. P25 is also known as the Electronics Industry Association/Telecommunications Industry Association (EIA/TIA-102) standard. The Department of the Interior (DOI) has adopted P25 as the standard for all radio purchases within the DOI and has mandated that all radios that carry law enforcement traffic comply with the standard.
Put your local police/fire frequencies into your baofeng and set all other channels to "skip" in CHIRP. Then, when you hit "scan" your radio will scan only the police/fire channels you saved. Not the best scanner by any means, but it works.
Mr. Notarubicon--Nice review. If you get a chance, try to get hold of a Quansheng 'upgraded' K6 HT. It's been modded to receive pretty much the whole spectrum, included MW, HF to include SSB, FM broadcast, WX, and VHF/UHF. Includes a rubber ducky antenna and telescoping antenna, all for about 60 dollars of moneys. You have to dig in the menus to figure out its secrets, but it's a radio dork's dream. Haven't figured out how to 'chirp' it yet.
Great videos, please keep them coming and thank you for the time I imagine it takes to do all this. I have a new UV-5R and "in a dream" I unlocked it and it now works with all the cheap FRS's we've using, here on a ranch, over the years. I just bought a UV-5RM (I most likely will return for the AR-5RM) but cant figure out what it wont transmit on. "In a dream" I had it talks to FRS, GMRS and HAM frequencies. If the UV-5RM could be unlocked what could it do that I'm not seeing it do now.
Of all videos of the Baofeng, this video is the one that convinced me to get the AR-5RM. Thank you. I'll continue to watch your videos so I can do everything "legally". Thank you. Can't wait till I get it.

I own an AR-5RM great radio! The airband antenna it came with (an Abbree branded 771 style) was kind of crap. But with the TIDRadio airband antenna that came with the TD-H3 the AR-5RM airband works quite well. Definitely worth the $30

The ony thing I don't like about it is that the receive sensitivity isn't as good as other radios I own (such as the UV-5R). When ilstening to very fars away stations that come in sort of OK on the UV-5R, I can't hear squat on the AR-5RM. With the same entenna, same time of day, same everything. Other than that, it's a fine radio for the monies that I paid for it. Your sensitivities may vary....
For people worrying about spurious emissions, they should look at the harmonics frequencies. The FCC may have allocated the GMRS and Ham frequencies to avoid any bands that would care.
Love ur sense of humor and your view on reality. Any chance you have put your hands on the "newer" BF K5 PLUS as well? Looks to be the same chipset in a new shell to me. Keep up the great work!
Looks like the AR-5RM is the 5RM. I havent been able to find the 5RM for sale any longer. I got a couple when they were available on amazon. Greatest boofwang ever. Now if they would make a uv-17 gps pro in 10w, that would be awesome.
@TheNotaRubicon there is one just called the 5RM that was available on Amazon a few months ago. No longer can I find it. I have 2 and they are unlocked.
By the way, sir, there is now a model named the GT-5R which is the Boo-Fwang radio with NO spurious transmissions allowing you to give the Sad Ham even MORE I love you fingers.
Hey @NotaRubicon what is the difference in Firmware of the UV-5G Plus and the AR-5RM or K5 Plus. They can all run the same Chirp Models but can't run the same T6UV Power On Picture Upload.
Boofwang of Japan makes the very best radio communicators. EDIT: Due to certain comments, I have changed my mind. They (Baofeng radios) are now made in Guam.
can i use it on GMRS with 10 watt ?? if not why ? wont that make it reach more far ? or i have to use only 5watt power on GMRS ? i have a GMRS car radio and it output 25watt on GMRS

This looks like a pretty decent radio if you want to have one to talk across all of the bands. I could see the benefits in that.
For people worrying about spurious emissions, they should look at the harmonics frequencies. The FCC may have allocated the GMRS and Ham frequencies to avoid any bands that would care.
Randy I love your style!!! Your presentations are great!!!!! Don't change anything. Glenn N6JAI
Great channel, and superb trolling. 👍
The UV-5RM is locked.. The AR-5RM is not locked, and both are available on Amazon as of 24 hours ago.
@TheNotaRubicon there is one just called the 5RM that was available on Amazon a few months ago. No longer can I find it. I have 2 and they are unlocked.
Got mine ! Really helps for my useless Chinese HT collection I mean talking to 'other people'. Thanks not a !
Finally, a “C port” for charging.
I dunno man, that's a bunch of radio-dork stuff.
Just love your videos, are most the "AR" of any model the unlocked versions?
Boofwang of Japan makes the very best radio communicators. EDIT: Due to certain comments, I have changed my mind. They (Baofeng radios) are now made in Guam.
China?
@@LIL-MAN_theOG google the name and companys origins..not japanese @ founded in 2001.
Shanghai Japan 😅
Keep the video short and don't waste my time but not too short I like the way you describe and I want more.
My wifes said not to buy one, so I bought two!!!🤣 The spurious emissions were through the roof...😉
can i use it on GMRS with 10 watt ?? if not why ? wont that make it reach more far ? or i have to use only 5watt power on GMRS ? i have a GMRS car radio and it output 25watt on GMRS
