What in the heck is the difference between any of the Baofeng radios? All Baofeng is doing is milkin the consumer with the same old tech available years ago! I do like your posts though! Lol!
Geezus... Did you even WATCH the video? This radio is VASTLY different from all the previous Baofeng models, and I think that most people would agree that $35 is hardly "milking" ... But, nobody is forcing you to buy it so I suggest you don't.

Still charging? About 3yrs ago, they passed legislation that was supposed to make GMRS free (same one that made HAM lic no longer free). Odd how they somehow managed to immediately implement the HAM lic charge, and still haven't found the time to implement free GMRS.

Total pain in the ass to do. Video instruction is probably only good for days before Big Brother changes something. Got through it and waited for an email notification (or anything) from the FCC. Nothing, 14 days passed and I decided to go to their website... HORROR SHOW! I Googled how to find licensing information, by the third one I figured it out. Low and behold, I have a license. DOOD RANDY! I love the way you completely harrass and mock the sad hams out there. Yes, I am a certifiable GMRS operator and am an Amateur Extra operator. However, I do have to say, I have yet to meet many YL or 'chick' that thinks a radio on your hip is cool. I do have some 30+yr YL's that appreciate what you speak of. Please keep producing this information.

***UPDATE*** Hey Maha-Randbo, I finally received my radios. I'd pretty much figured out the basics by the time they got here, just by watching your videos. And yes, I did RFD...and even found a mistake in the programming section! I'd done a lot of research on these things and I decided on these as an entry-level radio for my wife and I. They were cheap but surprisingly well built. My first setting was the Roger Beep😂..too bad they don'thave a marker tone. We plan to add radios to our Ranger and other vehicles in the not so distant future. There ARE some sad hams, unfortunately. I do not yet have my GMRS license and when I tried for a radio check in my local area, all I got was sarcasm...but I know the radio was 10-2! Keep up the good work. It's helping me navigate a very confusing market to find what I need. You da man El Rand-bo! PS: We like the Rush Limbaugh references in your vids too;)
Been a fan of the UV-9G since they got the bugs fixed that you pointed out in your first review. This new offering looks fantastic. The freq-scan seems like it would be VERY useful if trying to connect with random men talking in their basements.
These really are great radios for the cost. Got.the 2 pack and very happy with them. I live in a rough, non radio or ohone environment, Mountains of Wv. I was able to clearly communicate at 4.3 miles away to my son at home, at 4.8 he could still hesr me and make out what i was saying but it was staticy. Non the less in this area anything over 3 miles per usual with other radiis was nothing short of a miracle and these radios shattered the 3 mile fizz out.
Surprisingly Nice for the Price... Here in the U.K I have UV-5RH although badge shows BF-5RH These are sold as Tri Band or Multi Band. But appear to be the same format/size etc., as the UV-5G Plus. Version 1 - Multi Band FM radio 76-108 MHz; AM aviation frequency band: 108-136MHz (RX) VHF1: 144-148MHZ (RX&TX) ; VHF2: 200-260MHz (RX) UHF1: 430-440MHz (RX&TX) ; UHF2: 350-390MH2 (RX) Version 2 - Tri Band 136-174 / 220-260 / 400-520MHz The larger capacity battery is a bonus, although the radio may consume more power due to the larger colour display. Despite the voice announcements sounding a little fuzzy, the received audio quality is excellent. AM reception is exceptionally good, as with my Icom set. unlike the Qaunsheng...
The radio's Channel Search feature is nice, especially since it shows the CTCSS / Digital tone! Its an onboard frequency counter. Hopefully their future 🐷 Ham radios will have this too!? Its very useful, when traveling to new locations and wanting to easily join in a conversation. It would be useful in a SHTF shituation too! 😮 The Reverse feature is also handy trying to triangulate a radios location, when they are in use on a repeater.
Yeap. I just bought one as a backup and I like it. I got about 4 miles with some buildings and trees between me and my buddy with his Wouxan and we were talking and with a little static could hear each other fine. Great channel sir. ❤
Got an Icom mobile VHF/UHF rig a few years back. Screen has poor contrast, no radio bracket in box ($40 extra), no head unit bracket (another $40 extra), no programming cable in box ($50 extra), and no bluetoooth without an adapter board (and yet ANOTHER $100.) Realistically, we're talking about $20 worth of parts here. That all didn't go down smooth after having just dropped 4 bills on a new radio, plus all the other stuff to hook it up, including an antenna... Made me feel a certain kind of way about the big brands.
I think I should give this radio a try in the future. I have a UV-5RPro which does pretty well… at *listening* to various frequencies and channels, but we don’t want to transmit on GMRS with those lest “some people” get sad at my decisions. Anywho, I love your reviews. They’re delightfully humorous and surprisingly detailed. Keep up the great work, Randy. ❤
I picked up a couple of these … pretty much because of this video. They’re nice radios. I am in an area where I am at the very limit of being able to hit one of our local repeaters, here on the east coast. So, lotsa trees. With this radio, I can hit the marginal range repeater with every antenna I’ve tried. Both short and long that came with it, and even a Smiley 5/8 Slim Duck. With a Wouxun 935G+, I can’t hit that repeater with any of the same antennas, including its OEM. The only think I can conclude is that, through the trees here on the east coast, watts matter almost as much as antenna size. Another thing I’ve discovered is that if you use that reverse transmit button (*), it completely destroys the repeater channels. It erases the transmit offset, and nulls the CTCSS tone. It also completely changes the way you program the radio from the keypad. You have to program it then just like you would a UV-5R. You have to go to VFO, set the frequency, set the offset, set the CTCSS, store it in a channel, then go back to channel mode to access it. The good news is, you can use menu-42 to “reset VFO,” and it returns to the way it was just before you hit the * key. Even to the point of CTCSS codes. But really weird behavior for using a fairly obscure feature of the radio. Quirky radio. But still a good one.
I have several uv-5r radios and now the new uv-5r pluse. My plus model has better recieve capabilities. I ran many test using a simplex repeater. All 5rs and the 5-plus were equipped with identical stock antennas. Comparing them side by side under weak signal conditions. I had to use the monitor function on the standard 5rs just to here the message, and even then it was nearly unintelligible. This was typical, so no surprise there. I had 3 5Rs with me and they all did the same thing. Then I tried the 5 plus, and to my surprise it broke squelch. And holding the monitor I got a weak but perfectly legible signal. So I repeated test multiple times and confirmed the results. I tried all combinations of power settings but there was not much difference. The 5 plus recieved legible signals at low, medium and high power, and the 5r were just barely there. Then I swapped all antennas to the 771g style whip antennas. All radios performed better, however the 5 plus consistently broke though squelch with clear steady signal albeit medium static, and the standard 5-rs struggled the keep the squelch open throughout out the entire message and they was significantly noticeable more static. Holding the monitor open did produce a legible signal, but still not as good as the 5-plus with the stock antenna. This impressed me so much that I have a second 5-plus on the way. If the same results hold up, then I swap my fleet of uv-5rs for the 5-plus.
Hi… I thought you actually like a radio question… TidRadio TD-H3 vs Boefeng UV-5G Plus ? I’m brand New at this but am feeling like purchasing a 4 pk. For my family in the case of SHTF!! Please tell me which you would choose for your family 😊
Wanted to reach out and personally thank you for this video. It did one thing that neither Baofeng nor Chirp could do for me... it told me what radio to select in Chirp in order to actually program the radio! Baofeng didn't offer a specific software download for this model and didn't respond to customer support. Chirp on the other hand, insisted I download an error message set and channel settings from their software, yet their software didn't spec this model, and the other UV-5 versions didn't report the correct settings for this radio, nor would they let me export those settings. So, you saved me personally a LOT of grief with this video, despite complaints from some less wise than you in the comments below. Thanks again, pal! Keep on with the attitude, too. Because I, for one, like so many of your followers, UNDERSTAND the attitude, we don't have SISSY FITS about it.
***BOLO*** After much contemplationing and confunkulationing, I've taken the GMRS plunge with a pair of the UV5G+ radidios. Haven't received them yet. I figured this HT might be a good entry level unit to learn with. I'm retired and looking for an interesting hobby. Your no nonsense videos are great for folks like me to help cut through the BS. I've used all of the expensive radios over the course of my career. This is my first effort with the civilian systems;). Thanks for the tutorials and informative videos.
The UV9G was a train wreck. This one is intriguing, both in appearance and features, especially the "one touch search", which might be worth the modest cost of the radio, alone.
The programming sequence using software was just weird. Also, there is the Channel 15 no transmit issue. To me, the UV5G programming was more logical and had a better receiver.
I have not experienced any issue with sending/receiving on GMRS 15 from my UV9G. Was I just a lucky purchaser? No issues with channel programming either.
I finally bit the bullet and ordered this UV5G Plus. Had it less than 24 hrs and thus far I absolutely love it. Proprietary software loaded easily in my finicky computer. Programming and channel layout is intuitive and logical. Receive and receive audio is excellent. I have only made two contacts and they were on the fringe of a repeater 20 miles away that I normally have trouble hitting with a 20W mobile. Reports of my signal were good, considering. This is one of, maybe THE first, Chinese ht I have had that I cannot find serious fault with. Hoping RT Systems comes out with a version of their software for it as the RT software usually has a few perks that improve over proprietary software.
Randy - get with the program! Spurious emissions on the Baofeng , though not perfect, has been minimized greatly since 2020. Sure - the UV-5R is a Ham Radio, but its sister Radio (the GT-5R by BaoTech(?)) has been improved greatly to have near zero spurious emission in late 2019, and that improvement has been brought over to the newer UV-5Rs and other sisters radios. This new UV-5G+ should have near zero spurious emissions like the others. So anyone bitching about spurious emissions on any UV-5R after 2020 needs a serious grade. But this has been in the Ham Radio videos for much of this year. Great video as always. And great review of the radio.
Just a quick Thank You for your videos for the Baofeng UV-5G+. This is my first venture into GMRS (or any radio) and you've made it easier to understand some of it... and I like your attitude. Befuddled by the FCC, I'll try that later, maybe.
Dang, I just paid $107 CND for a two pack of the old ones from Amazon on Cyber Monday but reg price is $143. Still quite the mark up for the older model even with exchange rate. I have yet to squirt myself in the eye with spurious RF emissions, unlike that time I pissed into the wind.
Greetings! I have a Radiodity DB25G in the overhead console, tuned to convoy channel, road chan, spotter chan, on the 4th line I have set up so I can scan the local USFS, police, fire, etc. A UV5R for my spotter (transmit only on spotter chan, listen to convoy chan) 2 UV5G Plus set to convoy chan and road chan for others in the convoy or camp A Midland 75-822 CB radio has been a great help in the active logging areas. The CB and DB25G have magnet mount antennas on the roof. Our venturing usually is in the northern Oregon Coast range or around Mt Hood. A UV 5r is used as a scanner at home.
Randy, Thanks for the Review. I took a chance and bought a pair of these units. Looking forward to getting the License and using them and possibly re-programming one to use as as scanner ( I previously bought the same unit at an auction doe 10.00 so I think I got a decent deal on that one too.
I have never seen this radio, partly because it has not been built. I ordered a pair on Amazon 12/20/23 and was informed that I could expect the delivery (wait for it) Feb. 04-14, 2024. That is 45-55 days. I can't cancel because my other items don't add up to $35 so I'd have to pay shipping. In 45 days this could be obsolete and replaced by a different model. Perhaps I should have suspected an issue when the Baofeng store itself had none of these. I suspect the labor market is very tight in China and it's hard to find people willing to work . . . .
Have you seen the Quansheng "UV-5R Plus" It looks like it's going to be able to run the same modified firmware as their K5 and K6. It's amazing what those Quansheng radios can do. And their price is pretty similar to the Baofeng.
I recently picked up a two pack of the UV-5Rs for my son and I to learn about HAM radio and to take with us when we go dirt bike riding. After learning more about GMRS I think that maybe we should have gone with those. Good thing these things are at such a fair price for people to get into the hobby.
Hey Randy, It's YOUR fault! I've been wanting to dip my toe into the world of GMRS radios and you pushed me over the edge! 😂 I got the "2 pack" and they have exceeded my expectations.
Keep in mind that if you're totally unfamiliar with GMRS, it's a learning curve for sure. Don't rush the process. Also, line of is important. In one direction from our house, I can barely get a mile. Other direction and its razor sharp at 2+ miles. My wife thought I had come back home and was playing a trick on her. Bigger antennas make a difference in distance! Enjoy.
I love the USB-C charging option, but will look for a model with somilar power levels without all the buttons as our camp hosts do not need anything to adjust more than the volume control. Obviously that limits us to programing via Chirp, but for me to have to explain any of the cool functions of this particular radio will be way over the heads of our camp hosts. They already have had to learn enough for the pay they receive. Cheers, Davey
I’ll have to look into the specifics of this model but I imagine you’re able to lock everything but the PTT just like other models. I think it leaves a few basic functions available besides PTT, but you’re able to set it up ready to hand to a complete amateur, show them the big button and set them free without worrying they’ll disable everything once they turn around and start playing with it. Just some food for thought, if you otherwise do like what you see in this unit.
Hi Randy, I ordered the two pack from Amazon on December 3rd and I might not receive it until the 16th of January. Radiodiddty is the supplier so they might be out of stock. All of my Baofeng radios have worked very well.
Amazon US has the Baofeng GM-5RH GMRS radio. It appears to be identical to the UV-5G Plus with the addition of a desktop charger. I have both radios ordered.
Were you actually able to do this? Using the latest version, dated 2023-11-29, on both a Win10-64 and MacOS computer, this does not work. It gives the error message of "Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want.". That is using the supplied programming cable from Baofeng, which does work with their proprietary CPS.
Thank you! I’ve binged your videos, decided to go with GMRS, and selected this Tupac for my first radio using your affiliate link! Appreciate your funny and informative videos! You’re the best!! 🙌💪🫶
Just got a hold of my set. Omg.. hands down bang for buck. :) Baofang/Radioddity hit this out outta the park. Got a tri-band/ham set coming also. Hopefully those are as good. Dude, the sound/reception out of these make the uv5r look like absolute crap. Forget everything you know of Baofengs as of these new offerings. Yes they’re that good… for $35 too! Crazy.
I share your enthusiasm on these. I just got mine yesterday. I'm new at this, so I figured this was a good entry-level radio. No disappointment so far.
Randy, the frequency display shows pretty large numbers but what do the alpha tags look like? Are the alpha characters the same size as the numbers or are they smaller?
I'm new to gmrs, from frs. How about a UV-5G 101 course. From radio operation turn on start to ...... What is what? Upper display vs lower etc, etc, etc. (Great videos btw!)
I have a question: How does it compare with the TD-H8. Other than the price about the features. I like the uv5r I have but thinking on a TD-H8 or uv5g.
Randy!! I been wanting to know if you can demonstrate on one of your Bofeng BF-F8HF episodes.. can you walk us through how can A/B jump back and forth automatically? Hope I explained that with understanding 😊..ty for all your support.
I just programmed my boofwang UV5R for gmrs frequency. Now i can eavesdrop on all the people around me. Channel 16 has what im assuming is Spanish trucker talk, but they speak in a sort of code. My favorite frequency is the local fire dispatch. Radios are neat tools
I guess the debate in my mind is how this 2 pack compares to a 2 pack of the UV-5R GMRS compatible version. You maintain the "ham" but sacrifice screen, longer antenna, and USB cable this comes with. Both would have NOAA alerts.
Hello I'm still new to this.I have a uv-5ra and wondering if I should upgrade to this radio even though I'm willing just use for ham and scanner.Love your video's
Great vid. Is there a way to get the GMRS channel number to read large in the screen instead of the frequency? If so can you tell us how to display it.thank you
I'm a fan of baofeng radio's. I also like watching /sharing your videos. My question is, are there any baofeng radio's that are capable of skipping or unskipping channels in the scan feature Without contacting to a computer? Or even another brand that's under $100.00.
Should have listened and ordered the 2-pack. Needed a spare battery because this one charges at the speed of smell (confirmed by that Soopii cable you recommended). A second radio was only $12 more than a spare battery. Can't complain. At least the battery is removable unlike these overpriced phones.
The only downside to these is the fact that not all the UV-5R accessories will work with them, but they look nice enough that maybe that's not needed. They do look pretty good. I might have to pick up a set, if only to figure out how to unlock them :).
@@TheNotaRubicon I was primarily thinking of battery and cradle charger that comes with the original UV-5G and UV-5R. It's hard to tell but I think the contacts on the UV-5G Plus battery are in a different area than on a UV-5G, so the cradle charger wouldn't be an option. It's by no means a deal breaker.
Any plans to review the new Rocky Talkie GMRS radio? Not something I would use in day to day use but I'm considering it for when I go backpacking for lightweight reasons.
Great timing. I came across that radio last weekend while cruising down the Amazon. Do you have any feelings for the GM-15. I have a single, UV-5R but have been thinking about adding to my repertoire of radios in case I ever get a friend. And to have a friend, you need 2 radios so I want to be ready in case he doesn't have one of his own. It's slick that these new radios don't need a separate charging cradle. Just a USB cable to go into the batteries.
It's just me the Baofang lurker. I haven't seen a video of yours for months, and then there you were with a UV 5R in hand and I just had to watch. You did not let me down. I was laughing so hard at the end. And then you topped it off with the butt cream! Well done, your the Baofang King. Bleep Bleep Bleep Awesome.
I showed this video to friends who are big fans of 2-Pack. They have told me for years that he was still alive. This video seems to bolster their claims a bit. They are smiling more than I have seen in years.
I bought the single radio because I have no friends to talk to (lol) and was disappointed to learn the single doesn't have the longer antenna or the programming cable. Guess I'm buying the 2 pack.
Would really appreciate seeing a video on programming this model for using a repeater. I know that you've done one for the UV-5R, but it's menu is not the same and I'm struggling to find the corresponding steps to get there. Thanks!!
Hey. Man you have great videos! Love them. Quick question: I know it's just a matter of time before someone finds out how to unlock this radio to use on other non-gmrs frequencies but I was wondering if you had figured this out yet? I just bought one and it's on the way.
It really is not "just a matter of time".. When the lock is burned into the firmware, it is simply not unlockable. If you want this design in an unlocked version check out this video: th-cam.com/video/ROQP2nWHE7M/w-d-xo.html

I've watched a few of your videos and I've just subscribed to your channel. I'm interested into getting into GMRS radios, I'm probably going to get one or two of the ever popular Baofeng radio(s) to play around with, but I'm also wondering if GMRS radios can also use FRS channels.
Been watching a bunch of your gmrs videos your the reason why I got the uv5r. Really curious which of the 2 would you pick between the uv5r (gmrs) or uv5g plus? Looking to purchase one today just not sure which is the best one to pull the trigger on. Also would I be able to use my abbree tactical antennas on these gmrs radios. Or should I purchase a specific gmrs antenna. Always appreciate the honest input. Thank you
I ordered a two-pack of the UV-5RM (the 10W ham version) from AMZN because of this video. It appears that in the Radioddity and Amazon listings that all the versions are unlocked to TX on 2m/1.25m/70cm/GMRS. I'll know in 2 days.
Thanks for the review guy!!.... I'm completely new to the game and purchased a UV-5R about 2 weeks ago and got hooked. Saw your reviews and videos for that radios as well, great stuff guy, thanks for the content!.... anyways, I ended up buying this set today and noticed that people are having trouble with CHIRP and this radio. I went down the list of Baofeng radios on the CHIRP list and the UV-5G plus was not available BUT when I scrolled to the Baofeng/Pofung section I for some reason the "UV-5G Plus (use Baofeng GM-5RH)". Have you or any of your buddies had any luck connecting to CHIRP using this method with this UV-5G PLUS?
Randy, have you messed with the 5RM yet? It looks exactly like the one you are reviewing now but the out power is rated at 10 watts. Its also "unlocked" and can TX on GMRS frequency. Wondering what does the firmware say with the radio off, hold down the PTT + 8 button, and turn the radio on.
What in the heck is the difference between any of the Baofeng radios? All Baofeng is doing is milkin the consumer with the same old tech available years ago! I do like your posts though! Lol!

The number of fars is more dependent on the antenna. Sure, 5 watts will transmit farther than 1 watt, but the antenna... Also, your fars may vary due to terrain. Nice review. Thanks!
DOOD RANDY! I love the way you completely harrass and mock the sad hams out there. Yes, I am a certifiable GMRS operator and am an Amateur Extra operator. But I find your videos incredibly informational and helpful. I share the information that you publish all of the time with my friends, colleagues and dead animals so they can make informed decisions.
However, I do have to say, I have yet to meet many YL or 'chick' that thinks a radio on your hip is cool. I do have some 30+yr YL's that appreciate what you speak of.
Please keep producing this information.
I have the ham version of this. I too really like this radio. The 5RM. Chirp compatible too! Plus you can switch from ham to GMRS just by a button sequence. Oh, and I’m 4 months into radio, have my GMRS license, own every
Is it like the tidradio h8 you power it on hold one of the 3 buttons on the right side of paid?
To switch from ham to gmrs im asking
***UPDATE***
Hey Maha-Randbo, I finally received my radios.
Version 1 - Multi Band
FM radio 76-108 MHz; AM aviation frequency band: 108-136MHz (RX)
VHF1: 144-148MHZ (RX&TX) ; VHF2: 200-260MHz (RX)
UHF1: 430-440MHz (RX&TX) ; UHF2: 350-390MH2 (RX)
Version 2 - Tri Band
136-174 / 220-260 / 400-520MHz
The larger capacity battery is a bonus, although the radio may consume more power due to the larger colour display.
The Reverse feature is also handy trying to triangulate a radios location, when they are in use on a repeater.
Picked one of these up off of Amazon. Hitting a repeater about 40 miles away, communicating with folks around 20 miles away. How’s that for fars.
Are you in a metro area ? And are you close to a beach?
Just bought mine today. Adding it to my collection!
Yeap. I just bought one as a backup and I like it. I got about 4 miles with some buildings and trees between me and my buddy with his Wouxan and we were talking and with a little static could hear each other fine.
Great channel sir. ❤
USB-C charging right out of the box? Wow, Boofwhang is 10 steps ahead of even the big 3 ham companies in that regard.
Yes but still junk 😂
@@juanfgonzalez2039 so is your mom
Got an Icom mobile VHF/UHF rig a few years back. Screen has poor contrast, no radio bracket in box ($40 extra), no head unit bracket (another $40 extra), no programming cable in box ($50 extra), and no bluetoooth without an adapter board (and yet ANOTHER $100.) Realistically, we're talking about $20 worth of parts here. That all didn't go down smooth after having just dropped 4 bills on a new radio, plus all the other stuff to hook it up, including an antenna... Made me feel a certain kind of way about the big brands.
Quansheng does it 😂🎉
Can you scan the railroad with it
I think I should give this radio a try in the future.
Thank you for the review
I eant something for when the shtf
I need to get my license and start educating myself
Thanks, this ham guy just ordered 4 ht's for my grandkids, for shtf and training
I find you to be snarky, belligerent, dismissive, controversial, combative, but also, well prepared, intelligent & thoughtful, I do not hate you.🌺

Really a perfect combination of traits, much like the radio. 😂
That’s the nicest thing that anyone has ever said to him.

***BOLO***
After much contemplationing and confunkulationing, I've taken the GMRS plunge with a pair of the UV5G+ radidios.
As another Dana, I just bought one too 😊
I was looking at the gm15 pro pair for 49.99 but you have gave me another option thanks. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks, Sad Ham, Garry
The UV9G was a train wreck. This one is intriguing, both in appearance and features, especially the "one touch search", which might be worth the modest cost of the radio, alone.
What didnt you like about the UV-9G? Its my favorite right now. (Well until this video got released LOL)
What was wrong with that radio? I thought Randy gave it a good review!?
Just fyi, there is a UV-5R GMRS version now.
You can unlock it, I actually have a new one on order, could make a video on how to do it
Please tell me I’ve been searching for weeks trying to find someone who knows if it is actually capable of being unlocked
That's Canada for you. Land of the rip off.
See what happens when you live in Canadia?
Finally someone pronounced it correctly!! Thanks Randy
Still battling if I should get this or Upgraded Version of UV-17R: UV-17R Plus? Any one have experienced between these 2 ? Please advise thanks.
Randy, Thanks for the Review. I took a chance and bought a pair of these units. Looking forward to getting the License and using them and possibly re-programming one to use as as scanner ( I previously bought the same unit at an auction doe 10.00 so I think I got a decent deal on that one too.
Thanks for the straight forward and informative video, ordered a pair of these for the simplicity of use with them for GMRS.
I suspect the labor market is very tight in China and it's hard to find people willing to work . . . .
Randy loves that it’s plus sized.
the belt clips and wrist straps on the UV5G plus, really get the chubby ones attn. LMAO
Have you seen the Quansheng "UV-5R Plus"
It looks like it's going to be able to run the same modified firmware as their K5 and K6.
It's amazing what those Quansheng radios can do. And their price is pretty similar to the Baofeng.
Those actually look fun. It would be interesting if someone gets POCSAG paging working tx/rx, and I think someone did APRS.
I got one of those and they're absolute junk. Terrible transmitting power. They don't work good at all
I recently picked up a two pack of the UV-5Rs for my son and I to learn about HAM radio and to take with us when we go dirt bike riding. After learning more about GMRS I think that maybe we should have gone with those. Good thing these things are at such a fair price for people to get into the hobby.
You should be able to hack them to dial in the GMRS frequencies. It requires a factory reset. I use mine for Ham, GMRS and Marine.
You SOLD me! Unfortunately I wasted my time and money on a HAM license. Anyways is Mr. Chewy Pencil available in your merch store?
Hey Randy, It's YOUR fault! I've been wanting to dip my toe into the world of GMRS radios and you pushed me over the edge! 😂 I got the "2 pack" and they have exceeded my expectations.
Good to know, I just ordered my 2 pack.
Enjoy.
The uv5g plus is chirp compatible. Select the Radioddity profile template for uv5g plus at startup
I think the Radioddity GM-N1 would be perfect for you, channel knob and volume, PTT, 2 watts.
If it's the same as the regular UV-5R, you can lock the keypad.
@KU9L Set the radio up the way you like then lock the radio's keypad.
Retevis RB17A if you want GMRS. Work great and super simple, no screen
I just bought a two pack of this radio. Can’t wait for it to be delivered.
Use the latest update of Chirp to program and select the UV-17 Pro.
@@speedspeak2me645 Are you using the version called Chirp Next?

Will this radio explode if taken to Middle East countries and key up?

Just got a hold of my set. Omg.. hands down bang for buck. :) Baofang/Radioddity hit this out outta the park. Got a tri-band/ham set coming also. Hopefully those are as good. Dude, the sound/reception out of these make the uv5r look like absolute crap. Forget everything you know of Baofengs as of these new offerings. Yes they’re that good… for $35 too! Crazy.
Just… wow.
I like the ability to search and finding the channels and codes. Is it easy to save those channels?
Probably! But since it is not mentioned in the user-manual, I have no idea how.
Thanks. Nice concise review. Love the humor as well.
I love that hwhip antenna. Almost as much as I love Cool Hwhip!
Randy!! I been wanting to know if you can demonstrate on one of your Bofeng BF-F8HF episodes.. can you walk us through how can A/B jump back and forth automatically? Hope I explained that with understanding 😊..ty for all your support.
I BOUGHT 2 & LOVE THEM!
I just programmed my boofwang UV5R for gmrs frequency. Now i can eavesdrop on all the people around me. Channel 16 has what im assuming is Spanish trucker talk, but they speak in a sort of code. My favorite frequency is the local fire dispatch. Radios are neat tools
Can you point me to a vid that explains how to do this?
I love these videos, not only does make me laugh a lot but he gives me the info I care about!
Since I'm your favorite viewer, I demand to always know how many farz the radio will transmit right away.. 🤣
Great video as always sir!
🤣🤣🤣
My question is, are there any baofeng radio's that are capable of skipping or unskipping channels in the scan feature
Without contacting to a computer?
Or even another brand that's under $100.00.
Should have listened and ordered the 2-pack. Needed a spare battery because this one charges at the speed of smell (confirmed by that Soopii cable you recommended). A second radio was only $12 more than a spare battery. Can't complain. At least the battery is removable unlike these overpriced phones.
Got this radio and it works like a charm
If this radio could be unlocked I would upgrade my UV-5r's to this.
The only downside to these is the fact that not all the UV-5R accessories will work with them, but they look nice enough that maybe that's not needed. They do look pretty good. I might have to pick up a set, if only to figure out how to unlock them :).
As far as i am aware, ALL UV-5R accessories, other than the battery work with this radio.
Can you list some things that dont work with it?
@@TheNotaRubicon I was primarily thinking of battery and cradle charger that comes with the original UV-5G and UV-5R. It's hard to tell but I think the contacts on the UV-5G Plus battery are in a different area than on a UV-5G, so the cradle charger wouldn't be an option. It's by no means a deal breaker.
how did you find the antenna vs say the Nagoya or other "better" antennas?
This lookes like & by your description sounds the same as my new GM-5RH.

Does it fit in a magazine pouch? These are important questions.
I showed this video to friends who are big fans of 2-Pack. They have told me for years that he was still alive. This video seems to bolster their claims a bit. They are smiling more than I have seen in years.

Yeah, but catching the live stream with HRCC last night was awesome too!
It’s a 2 pack, so Randy dropped a deuce 😂
Outstanding video as usual. Thank you.
I bought the single radio because I have no friends to talk to (lol) and was disappointed to learn the single doesn't have the longer antenna or the programming cable. Guess I'm buying the 2 pack.
I’m torn between the Plus and the Pro. What’s the difference in them?
Would really appreciate seeing a video on programming this model for using a repeater. I know that you've done one for the UV-5R, but it's menu is not the same and I'm struggling to find the corresponding steps to get there. Thanks!!

I love that Spurious Emmissions stcker! To funny. Are those for sale?

Thank you
What choice did you go with?
I ordered a two-pack of the UV-5RM (the 10W ham version) from AMZN because of this video. It appears that in the Radioddity and Amazon listings that all the versions are unlocked to TX on 2m/1.25m/70cm/GMRS. I'll know in 2 days.
Let us know!
And what end up happening?
Hmm
any updates?
Are these the same from the Unlocked video 2 months ago. From your Amazon link?
Randy, have you messed with the 5RM yet? It looks exactly like the one you are reviewing now but the out power is rated at 10 watts. Its also "unlocked" and can TX on GMRS frequency.
Wondering what does the firmware say with the radio off, hold down the PTT + 8 button, and turn the radio on.
I'm curious too!
