Final year med student on an overnight shift at my OBGYN rotation (it’s 11 pm from my side of the world when this video was uploaded). Glad that I could have some company by watching this video. 😂

You actually DON't use all the boards info even as an IM attending? I thought it was the only specialty where you actually use this stuff

We use a lot of it! But some of the stuff from medical school like peds, OB, ophthalmology, etc. not so much

Quick question but is IM long call basically only 1 senior resident for the entire hospital? I'm a med student who hasn't had his IM rotation yet but I'm interested in it. How many residents do you get to be with to share the burden on nights?

Depends on the hospital! At kaiser it’s one senior resident for the whole hospital at night, since it’s a smaller hospital. At UC Davis there’s an intern doing cross cover for all the admitted patients and 2 seniors doing new admissions. You’ll find many different variations of this depending on what hospital you end up working at!

@@ConanLiuMD thanks! How many patients would a senior have to cover for in Kaiser?

Ever thought of doing a critical care fellowship?

Haha yes I entertained it for a while, I really do like the medicine a lot but I didn't like how it felt like we were providing futile care for so many patients. Especially for cases where it really was daily goals of care discussions with family with no progress - sometimes felt like I was just prolonging their suffering :(
