    you're misleading. Marc says directly that it was "too crowded in there", saying that it was because of his DID he couldn't recieve previous MK's knowledge.

    I like the angle the show is taking, where it seems Mark already had DID before he met Konshu but when he became the avatar the DID got worse, more pronounced, more lively, more uncontrollable, and lead to Mark's ability to speak to his alters. It supports the concept of DID not being a contagious illness while also explaining its more fantastical depiction as the effect magic has on the real condition.

  • @EnerKaizer
    @EnerKaizer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +356

    The easiest solution for the DID conundrum would be to just clarifiy that Mark already had DID when Konshu chose him as his new champion, but when Konshu tried to put the memories of the former Moonknights in him he didn't realise that Mark had DID which caused the multiple memories to get split up by all of Marks alters, thus giving them all certain abilities of the Moonknight and thus changing the nature of Marks DID in the process.

    Talking about how each of Marc's alters has their own variation of the Moon Knight costume, I would love for this to be explored in other stories, and since the Disney Plus show is leaning into that idea a lot more, I would love to see what kind of costume they give Jake Lockley, maybe one that resembles a cowboy.

    I really like the 2016 run’s approach to Moon Knight’s psychology, where their DID formed from childhood trauma (much like real DID) and Konshu being a destructive force trying to force Marc to be Konshu rather than simply embracing his alters as all being the “real moon knight”, there was a wonderful metaphor I read about DID in regards to the idea of a “true self”; if you were to drop a ceramic pot, and then glue all then shards back together, I’d be really silly to ask “so which shard is the real pot?”, they’re all real, they’re just simply fragmented pieces of a whole. Anyways I’m a fan of Moon Knight having DID but Konshu being an outside force that’s entered the System

  • @melaniey.5596
    @melaniey.5596 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1452

    It’s a shame the comics are using a “communion with Khonshu caused the DID” approach, because I like it better the “Marc already had DID, but it was twisted into something alien and not quiet like DID” approach. Idk I find more interesting the idea that people with mental illness can also become heroes, but with the caveat that the trauma they might acquire while doing hero stuff or what lead them to that path might worsen their condition even more.

    Given Warsame's intentions, I feel like her assessment of "You dont have d.i.d. Khonshu did this to you lmao" should be taken with a grain of salt. I personally fall under the belief that he's always had it, and communion with Khonshu/becoming Moon Knight had... interesting effects on his condition. Because I feel like it makes more sense (as far as superheros and ancient gods go), and because I like the idea of someone with mental illness independent of their powers/superheroing going on to become a hero despite their condition.
    That being said, if Dr. Badr sticks around, and I hope he does because I like him as a character, it would be interesting to see how Khonshu's influence has had it's effect on other people given the eldritch horror nature of the relationship. And if they do, I hope it isn't just "Badr also has D.I.D." both because that could become VERY cheap and derivative, and because different people react to situations differently. The human psyche is complicated and messy, and it would be very interesting to explore how two people cope with the same thing happening to them, especially given how very different Marc and Badr's personalities and outlooks are.

    I would definitely rather they ultimately commit to him having already developed DID when he was younger and the stuff with Khonshu just adversly affecting it in some way. Hell, it may well even be that Marc did have DID but it went pretty much unnoticed for a long time until Khonshu showed up causing some of his alters to rise to the surface (maybe because the Moon Knight persona is supposed to be sort of a mix between the avatar and Khonshu himself, but because there are actually multiple identities in there it messed up the balance and gave the other alters just as much control as Marc)
    For now I like the way the show is handling things even if the talking to each other through a mirror is a tad goofy and cliche (though again that part could be because of Khonshu's meddling) so I'll be intrigued to see how things go when Jake comes along as presently it seems like neither Steve nor Marc know who or what he is

    I really wish you'd do some basic research into the history of how what's currently called DID has been diagnosed over the years. You keep busting on the early issues for using the "wrong" terminology when, in fact, they were fairly accurate to DSM-III, which was brand new in 1980 and first defined a whole class of dissociative disorders, a class which was still very broad at the time. The term DID didn't even exist until 1994 when DSM-IV renamed what had been called multiple personality disorder (in DSM-III) and refined the definition somewhat, with further revisions later in DSM-V.
    Go back even a few years before Moon Knight and the diagnosis under DSM-II would have been "hysterical neurosis of a dissociative type" and the definition would have been even looser. Even today with (hopefully) better understanding of what's involved, the commonplace overlap in symptoms between DID and schizophrenia spectrum disorders complicates diagnosis of both, and you can certainly suffer from both at the same time. The whole subject is a complex one, especially for a comic written by laymen, and calling out the early creators for not using modern terminology is about as unreasonable as criticizing a Victorian era physician for prescribing mercury treatments for syphilis rather than anti-biotics. You can't work with what doesn't exist yet.

    It would be a funny retcon if the reason Khonshu is drawn to a man with DID, is that Khonshu is a Cosmic Being who also have the human equivalent of DID. Even funnier if each aspect can also talk with each other either coordinating or just bickering, similar to how Marc can talk with his own alters. Writer's seem to keep changing Moon Knight so If they are going to keep retconning him every run, might as well have fun with different concepts.

    Imagine knowing that such a reaction not only exists, but is widespread. And now stomach it. Maybe you try to hold off - "I'll tell them once my results are back," leaving you waiting. You fear a positive, less for what it means for you, but instead for what it means to those around you...
    It... It sucks, man.

      Part of that is because Moon Knight was one of the few handful of heros serving as representation of the disorder, and with with it want to see it done positively and accurately. And taking away DID from the characters meant deleting one of the few representations they had with any positive aspects to it. Everybody wants a hero like them, and Moon Knight was that for a lot of DID systems. (Moon Knight and Crazy Jane from Doom Patrol are literally the only mainstream comic book DID systems I have ever heard about, and taking one away isn't going to fix the issues with their representations)

      @@Hey-Its-Dingo There was already a very similar superhero that officially had DID since his first appearance in 1983, long before Moon Knight officially came out as having DID. (And it was more accurate to the disorder than the Moon Knight comics, up until the 2016 Jeff Lemire Moon Knight).
      That being "The Badger", who was a kid that suffered abuse from his father almost every single day of his life. Eventually ran away from home to join the army in Vietnam, where he would get captured and tortured from months. His mental health deteriorated further and a Badger Goddess comes to him in a vision, choosing him as her avatar of vengeance.
      The Badger is a superhero with DID, Schizophrenia, and he only has the power to communicate/control animals (with Martial arts training in the mix).
      Only real big difference between Moon Knight and The Badger, is The Badger's mental health is much worse from his trauma and he mostly only fights crimes involving animal abuse.
      Moon Knight was original conceived as a Bad guy seeking redemption as a superhero, using disguises/aliases to help him preform his tasks. Not mentioned in the video is the fact that Doug Moench in an interview said his Khonshu was never meant to be real, just a near death hallucination that radically changed Marc Spector's life style from evil to good.
      And he wanted Moon Knight to be subtly Schizophrenic, where he slowly showed signs of being crazy as the comic series went along. But it was never meant to be actual DID, just a Schizophrenic man taking every minor detail in his new superhero lifestyle way too seriously.

    Personally, I like the constant shade and ambiguity thrown at Marc’s condition, at least in universe. In my mind, i see it as another layer to Marc’s mental health problems as he can’t tell reality from fantasy, but it also cleverly allows for the whole mythical aspect to keep feeling somewhat mythical. This also applies to the constant back and forth on if Kaunshu is working in Marc’s favor or not. The inability to tell helps drive a larger, overarching mystery narrative to the series.
    That said, it absolutely needs to be concluded at some point (I’d like your suggested idea with a tact on “Kaunshu has been looking to take care of you, just in ways you couldn’t understand at the time” sort of deal, to sell a more interesting “partnership” between the god and avatar pair), or confirmed out of universe somehow (like in an art of marvel book with notes from industry workers alongside each art piece).

He could leave himself notes, like "follow this dude, he's bad," and his friends and lovers could support him in his crime-fighting. Its my personal theory that the reason his mind is broken into those personality’s or identities is that he was dying in front of Konshu’s idol when he accepted him. His soul was beginning to depart and hadn’t chosen an afterlife, before being dragged back into his body. The split of physical, mental, and spiritual creating separate identities from the original.

    So… allow me to politely disagree that having Marc’s condition not actually be true DID but an affect of Konshu is a 10/10 idea. I get why it appears that way, because in theory it sidesteps the problems with botched representation both in the characters past and moving forward. Except… as far as most readers are concerned it’s effectively DID regardless of technicalities, especially if they don’t have life experience with real life people with DID to compare it to.
    By way of illustration, here’s a comparison. In Silence of the Lambs, it’s said flat out that Buffalo Bill is not actually transgender (well, they say “transexual” in the film), but most audiences don’t remember that. They remember Bill putting on lipstick and going “would you f*ck me,” and that image is still wielded against trans women to this day. Overtime the technicalities fade, leaving a harmful core that leaves audiences remembering what characters condition looked like regardless of what it actually was. And all the mis-steps in representation come along with that.
    To it another way… if this isn’t actually DID then nobody should be calling these other identities “alters” because it’s taking the language of an actual condition and slapping it onto superhero nonsense, cheapening it’s use and meaning.

I really appreciate how carefully you tackle mental health and how you take time to focus the audience on what Marvel screwed up in the character's inception and how subsequent writers made efforts to cement his mental health as a core component of the character. Awesome, man. Just awesome.
    Ultimately, I would really like Marc to actually have a mental health disorder as that's something that definitely exists in the "world outside our windows." I do, however, want it to be handled with care and for the writers to actually take time to fully understand what they're writing about in a way that doesn't further other those of us who suffer from some mental health concerns. I think it can be done and I hope that we get to see a respectful and honest exploration of super heroes living with mental health issues someday.

    I have a different take on "the one who lives on hearts." (Some of it might be slight spoilers for the Ellis et al run.) The psychiatrist says it's a secret aspect Marc taps into in his most violent moments, but she's not basing that on studying Marc in some way that could identify those moments, she just read about Khonshu and is speculating about how it applies. I think the big message of the third volume of the run that started with Ellis is that this most bloodthirsty aspect of Khonshu is expressed through *other* avatars that Marc didn't know existed. In that volume he encounters two different murderous villains who both claim to be servants of Khonshu, and at least one of them is confirmed to actually be by the context of the story. That's the secret revealed in the story about this "secret aspect": that Marc's not the only conduit, and not all aspects are expressed through him.
    The Khonshu of the Huston run could be seen as the heart eater aspect perhaps, but that was before establishing that idea, and it was an entirely different portrayal of him that was nothing but that one insanely violent aspect. Whatever that was, I don't think it's clear how it applies to the later portrayal of him.
    Also, as far as the Ellis/Wood run establishing Marc has a brain injury instead of DID, that information was simply stated by his psychiatrist... who, for spoilery reasons, is obviously not a trustworthy source and not someone who has Marc's best interests in mind. Since her goal was to manipulate both Marc and Khonshu, I think anything she told Marc that can't be corroborated from another source can be dismissed entirely.
    Later, in the Lemire run, Khonshu tells Marc that he's always been weak of mind, and that's why he's a desirable choice for a god to work through, inhabit, and possibly take over entirely. So I guess we all have to decide who's more trustworthy: the villain psychiatrist trying to mess with Marc's mind and Khonshu's perceptions, or a vision of Khonshu that might also be saying whatever to manipulate him, or might just be a figment of Marc's imagination. Either way, I don't think these examples establish absolute canon on Marc's mental state one way or another.

    This is the reason it confuses me so much when people complain the show isn’t comic accurate; comic book characters have constantly evolving portrayals as is, but especially with Moon Knight there’s so few through lines on his portrayal that an entirely new approach is only marginally less “accurate” than deciding to go with one run or another. The screenwriters did a good job of finding a balance that would work well on screen, considering how many conflicting runs they had to sift through.
