What is Absinthe? Myth, History, and Resurrection - Opening and Drinking from a 100 Year Old Bottle

  • No spirit is more evocative of the occult and the esoteric than the Green Fairy or Absinthe. Inspiration to dozens of artists and poets including luminaries like Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Aleister Crowley, and Alfred Jarry absinthe has a reputation like no other spirits. Thought to cause madness and hallucinations, most of absinthe's history is shrouded in myth. Join Esoteric as we explore this spirit, discuss Aleister Crowley's essay "The Green Goddess" and actually open and sip from a 100 year old bottle of real, vintage absinthe.

I've made several batches of my own using 3 different recipes. It took some failures before dialing into the perfect mix for me. Wonderful Louche, fine flavors, and just the right amount of bitter that no sugar was needed. I have finally been able to get my herbs and maceration just right that no secondary maceration was needed.

In fact, so exact in comparison to that divine state is this channel that I can envision that the algorithm, in its most elegant and indisputable perfection would be henceforth denoted simply as an italicized capital E. Dr. Sledge, your content is not only a revelation, but it demonstrates a surprising variety that betrays the careful consideration that you put into choosing topics for your audience. As a goth I've had a passing interest in absinthe for its connection with the subculture, but didn't know much about it, so this was wonderful to watch! It felt very profound and holy to watch you experience the sacredness of drinking such an old bottle made by people who aren't even on this earth any more. Thank you for sharing that with us. (Not pretentious at all, just passion and reverence is what I see. :))
The first bottle I ever attempted to open--of anything, much less absinthe--was wine, on the night I took my vows of dedication to my Patron God. The cork ended up in the bottle, and I actually shattered the glass rim of the bottle, so that entire bottle became an offering to Gwyn ap Nudd and my other Gods (the original plan was to share it with Them, but I was worried about bits of glass in the wine). So at least you did better at opening it than I did!

I've had Pernod, Tequila, Ouzo, Jaegermeister and Mezcal.
Only that last one had me hallucinate.
As far as the Pernod I had, it was quite a while ago. Brought in to the US by a German friend as contraband.
It reminded me of a more delicate Ouzo, but it had an almost sweet strawberry kind of flavor similar to valerian extract.
We did the regular louche thing and poured over sugarcubes.
I could see how this was a hit during the Belle Epoque.
I also used to work in beer and wine production. So I am familiar with what the different processes we use to sanitize equipment and containers do to the taste of a product.
In modern production we have to use a suite of chemicals to stay abreast of health codes.
The vintage Absinthe did not have the chemicals or the requirements we do.
So I'm confident the old stuff is different than what we get now.

The reverence you have for this is just beautiful. I was introduced to Jade Liqueurs, Distillerie Combier and the great Ted Breaux during my WSET Diploma studies way back in 2013. I didn't even like aniseed at the Time! I was converted upon tasting and have attended numerous T Breaux absinthe training sessions with Sip Or Mix.
I advocate profusely for enjoying absinthe properly here in the UK. Surprising people when they ask what my favourite drink is! Any chance to educate 💚🍸💚

Coming to this a bit late, but thought I'd comment anyway. Also a lover of absinthe, though I've never had the opportunity to try one of the historical bottles. My personal favorites are Bugnon's Clandestine (La Bleue), and locally-distilled Pacifique; and I was a member of the Wormwood Society for quite a few years.
Just wanted to add one bit, the cause of "absinthism" wasn't just alcoholism and the toxic heavy-metal pigments used in cheap absinthes, but also the fact much of the cheaper stuff was made with industrial alcohol instead of marc (wine spirits), and was often contaminated with methanol and other toxic alcohols.

  • @joevonwolfenstein21
    @joevonwolfenstein21 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh, don't apologize. You're a man of refined taste and the way you draw air through your pursed lips for the sake of aerolation of the spirit shows your inveterate experience with wine tasting. I have had Absinthe Lucid from 2011. It was good for a while, until I just started drinking it neat, letting the heat scorch the tip of my tongue while it clung to my palate cleaved.
Once, when and officer of the law was stopping me in the university's music room, wanted of course, to know what bottle I was drinking from and upon seeing it was impressed with the price of $62 for a 750ml. He didn't think someone drunk in public would be so high headed in at least two ways.
I think I might go find a bottle of Lucid or maybe better if possible. I haven't had any since 2011, so 14 years (?)
From Outlander the series I make this toast : "To a long life and a merry one; to a quick death and an easy one; to a pretty woman and an honest one, and to a stiff (worseky) Lucid, ... and another one!" 🤪 Slange! 46:02

"Non, non, non" this opening session is not pretentious at all... just very appropriate.
In Burgundy they say: "you have to kneel down to taste the wine of such a bottle".
So your respectful tasting was indeed very French!
"Grand bonjour" from a pennyless, but curious history guide who discovered ESOTERICA "par hazard" only a week ago.
Listening to the video about VALENTINUS was quite a star moment, too!
Like trying to open those heavy shutters in an old house in the foothills of Provence. The moment the WINDOW OF HISTORY opens, you discover a marvellous majestic sky, glowing in awesome pure, light woven purple, whilst all crickets are chanting their great cosmic evening song...
Lots of "force & courage" from France, Docteur. ESOTERICA deserves great success!

In 2013, when I graduated a Master's in Psychology program, I sprang for a bottle of absinthe in celebration. I didn't know too much about absinthe, and bought some horrid concoction (which I drank, because I was a poor university grad who couldn't afford to waste). Anyway, one of the myths floating around that factored into the ban was that wormwood, artemisia absinthium, had a narcotic effect. For decades there was a belief that absinthe could make one go mad because of the narcotic. Vincent Price once did a monologue about absinthe, and he helped perpetuate the myth. Wormwood does not have a narcotic effect. The suspected ingredient, thujone, which is also found in tansy, is somewhat related to THC (in cannabis), and so I think that was the connection. A related herb, artimisia vulgaris (mugwort), is the stuff the Chinese use in moxibustion.

@@TheEsotericaChannel Yes, otherwise I think I would be dead by now ;-) But absinthe have something very special, I wish I could use it in some of my rituals as "enchanted water", but so much effort have been invested to create this fabulous drink (and IT IS created to be a drink, not as a woo-woo potion) so I show it respect and I leave it to devoted fans like you :-)

Unfortunately, I can no longer drink, but when I did, I loved Absinthe. I tried a bunch of different kinds and always had a great time with. I eventually stopped using water or sugar and just drank it straight. The Green Fairy is something I will always miss, the alcohol, not so much.

And I’m nervous just cracking open a new bottle of Jade! 😅
I can’t even imagine now nerve-wracking it would be to open a still-sealed bottle of pre-ban absinthe. Oh, I can’t wait to have another one. 🤤

You have made me want to distill some. I already have a small pressure cooker converted after the plague (toilet paper and alcohol shortage) that I never got to use. Would just be something fun to mess around around with (I know about distillation and it's always better to be a safety nerd than get hurt and end up in the hospital).

I may have made some myself that could've possibly ended up at around 170 proof. However, the next possible attempt, I will definitely possibly try using a grape based spirit. I will see how the same recipes might compare.

Just imagine what the person bottleing it thought. As they put the seal on that absinthe bottle they probably thought it would be consumed a week later not almost hundred years later. They probably never imagined it would out live them or be opened in 2021.

    This is fantastic.
Edit: It is also great that the vintage absinthe samples are still available. I got the Pernod Tarragona circa 1960 and no modern absinthes that I have tasted could reach the same level of taste and aroma...but is it because of 60 years of storage of was it like that since the beginning? Experts say that distilled drinks do not change character after bottling, but still.

Very nice , at least you know that bottle is authentic , made the way it was made back then . It's always been a mystery surrounding the green fairy and you've given us some great examples of where to get more info on the topic. Many thanks Justin.

Very interesting. I used to work in a speakeasy style cocktail lounge in Seattle that specialized in absinthe and I was always fascinated by the ritual involved. Never thought about how it related to occultism.
