      If you want to sell hydrosol you should do it the proper way and get a proper still that is Copper, Glass or Steel. The way she is doing it is by boiling the material and it is not steam distillation which is how real hydrosols are made. If you are not selling the hydrosol and its for personal use then this method is fine. However, it will also have phenols in the water that is undesirable for skin use.

      This is not the most sanitary way to make hydrosol. If you are NOT selling it this is ok for personal use and very clever to do. But if you are selling the hydrosols never buy if it is made this way. Notice she did not say what kind of water she is using which she says is "high quality" That could mean anything which is scary. Cannot use kitchen water or just any bottled water. It must be clean clear properly Distilled Water. Never buy hydrosol made from people's kitchen pots that they cook in that will bring in other problems as well. But if you are making this for personal use its ok to do.
      Hydrosols must be refrigerated and will last 6-10 months

      No more than 10-12 months if distilled in an actual real still and is stored in a refrigeration. Mine are kept in a commercial refrigerator because I sell my hydrosols. The process in this video is no more than 6-8 month and it must be refrigerated also. Never purchase hydrosols kept in a personal refrigerator with their food.

      @@funluvnrm , once the plant matter has been steam distilled for several hours most of the aromatic properties will have been distilled out of it. You will know this once the distillate has no more aroma to it. Actually, this is the first step to making essential oils. With better/different equipment, this distillation process can be taken further to get the essential oils. Not really easily possible though using the method I have shown in the video

    i have a question! so ive been making my hydrosols and every time they have this weird send that you smell with the floral sent. kind of like an after taste, if that makes sense.lol like, when i make rose hydrosol, it will have a lovely fresh cut rose sent, but then have this "after sent" that smells weird. i dont even know how to describe the sent. but it comes out with any thing i distill. like jasmin, rosehips, lavender, etc. all have that same "after sent". i do it exactly the way you do it, and recently have been using an actual still i purchased and still comes out with the slight weird smell added to the lovely floral sents. is that normal?

    • @MakingHealthyChoices
      @MakingHealthyChoices  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hmmm I am not sure about this. Perhaps harvesting the flowers at a different time of day may make a difference. And making sure that you only have the flowers and no stems or leaves may also make a difference.

    • @gurogreen
      @gurogreen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s called „the still note“. It has to do with using stainless steel equipment while distilling. Copper pots should remove this harsh smell since it reacts differently to the elements. Yeast and sulfur is removed in contact with the copper, which is why copper is used traditionally in distillation. The yeasts and sulfur which is present in the final product when using stainless steel is what gives that unpleasant smell.

      It the phenols in the water because this method in the video boils the material and is not properly steam distilled which is how real hydrosols are made. In proper distillation with an actual still made of Copper, Glass or Steel the first 2-3 ounces of hydrosol is thrown out is called the heads then the rest the heart and tails of the process is clear of phenols. This method in the video she is boiling the material which causes phenols be in the water throughout the process. Thats the trace aroma you are smelling. Its not desirable for use on skin and is detected in skincare products by someone with a keen nose which you obviously have.

      Hi Lisa, I put the bulk of the hydrosol in the fridge (I make big batches) and always keep smaller bottles filled and out of the fridge for quick and easy use. I feel, that with big batches, that you won't be using up quickly, it will last longer in the fridge. That being said, I have had my hydrosol out of the fridge for weeks and months and it is fine. Also, with some hydrosols you may enjoy the cool feel of using it direct from the fridge - I find mint hydrosol is nice when it is cool.
