    The engine is still supported by the upper motor mounts which are on the sides of the drive train. That bottom mount is more directed towards stopping the torsion movement of the engine rather than the actual weight of the whole drive train assembly.

    This is one of the best DIY's I've seen, and that would be a lot ha. Had my rack replaced at a shop about 1000k miles ago, it is still driving so tight that I'm thinking somethings wrong in there. They used a rack from a TT and it went in an R32, they thought it would work, but I don't think so. Now I have the confidence to re-fix the problem, if they refuse to admit their guilt. Great video!

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the TT and R32 racks are the same, both have a tighter turning radius than compared to the standard MK4 rack. Your rack might be rubbing on something causing it to turn hard, or the universal joints on the steering column could be seizing up as well. Definitely worth checking out before paying the full price for a replacement unit.

    Thanks for the vid, the info is much appreciated. Please note that those hollow concrete blocks crush extremely easily in that orientation. Rotate 90 degrees, or use jackstands! Regards.

    There is a lot of parts which are interchangeable with VW, so I would imagine it's probably the same steering rack and the procedures are very similar. You should be able to do with in a weekend no problem. Mine took longer because I was doing it in my spare time during the winter (so I was working in the cold), I also had to order parts during the tear down, and I did sub frame bushings, control arms bushings, and ball joints at the same time.

    Thanks for the video. My buddy was able to replace the rack in my 2003 GTI in just under four hours without a hitch. Another 1.5 hrs to fine tune it.
    I found a reman on partsgeek for $187 and it was a reman VW replacement. Fast and free shipping.

    Excellent!I love when a video is in full detail in what to expect,do and watch for along with tool sizes and explanations,I have not had the displeasure of doing a steering rack but now I have to do two of them for my 2002 passat sw, two because i can get 1 at a salvage yard for $30 if I pull it myself,and at least now I have a idea of what to bring with me for tools.the weather looks like my next battle to do this job in but like a mechanaddict,its one bolt at a time. :)

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Mauricestamps Thank you... You only have to unbolt the bottom dog bone motor mount which stops the twisting action of the motor. There is still 2 other mounts on the timing belt side and transmission side of the engine which holds the engine in place. If you unbolt the bottom dog bone mount, the engine may twist back an inch and you'll have to pull it back in place by hand when you bolt everything back up. I suppose you could use the bar for extra safety, but honestly I didn't use one.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately you can't use a seal kit if most situations because the chrome coating on the shafts is what deteriorate rather than the seal itself. So after replacing the seals, you would still have the exactly same problem shortly down the road unless the shafts got re-plated.

    @iLimet To drop the sub-frame, you just have to remove the 4 bolts that hold in the steering rack and that's it. It will just hang off the spline at the end of the steering column shaft.

    There is no filter for the power steering on this particular vehicle. It could be overfull or the relief valve for the pump on the high pressure side of the hydraulic system is stuck.

    Does it have a tighter turning radius??? If you're looking for an upgraded bolt in rack, apparently the Audi TT or Golf R32 racks are a great upgrade. Although I'm not sure what the best prices would be because I'm in Canada and I know there is a large variation between prices in different countries.

    @nivasyl Possible it could have been the wrong rack. I know between some VW and Audi models, the parts are interchangeable. If you still have the old rack, your probably best to measure the tie rod distance to see if there is any difference.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @booboo1312 It actually took me a lot longer than it actually should have. I ran into a couple other parts that needed to be replaced that I had to order and I was also doing this while it was still cold outside. It took me about a week but if you don't run into any problems, it should only take 2 days at the very most.

    Great vid, you mentioned that a sealing fluid won't work, I have a 1998 polo, would that be the case for mine too and could you tell me why? Thanks in advance.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! In this case, it's very common for the sealing surface to become damaged with these steering racks. The chrome plating eventually rusts and causes a rough surface. So a stop leak would eventually wear away and even the seal on the shaft would become worn too.

      Yes you should be able to. All you need to do is unbolt the steering rack from the subframe (4 bolts) and that's it. The control arms might be a little tricky to remove though if you plan on leaving them intact with the spindles.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graham Wilson That doesn't sound like a power steering leak. Does it go down on power steering fluid??? Other things which it can be is a sunroof drain or maybe a heater core, but that would be directed towards the center of the dash instead.

    • @SavedbyHim
      @SavedbyHim 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll monitor the power steering fluid but it's an oily liquid so i don't think it's water and I don't have a sunroof on mine, thanks for commenting!

    • @SavedbyHim
      @SavedbyHim 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stripped the covers the weekend and found the sound deadening foam drenched in brake fluid. It looks like it ran down the wiring loom and relay box onto the bottom dash covers and started migrating towards the bonnet release lever. I can't find any leaks and aren't losing any fluid from the reservoir. I did have my brakes serviced recently, maybe this caused the fluid to leak out the reservoir as they were working on it and ran into the cabin somehow?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be leaking from the backside of the master cylinder into the cabin. I can't remember how the clutch system works on the MK4, but the brake fluid could also be coming from there as well if your car is a manual. Keep on eye on both fluid levels and see if the problem continues. Also make sure you clean the fluid up well too, brake fluid will destroy your vehicle's paint.

  • @Mauricestamps

      Mathularan1 The car had 380,000km when I bought it and it was driven all year around (including winters). It actually wasn't that rusty, it was just really dirty from the previous owner. If you check out my Volkswagen Golf Project video, you can see what state the car was in when I first bought it. It wasn't taken care of very well unfortunately.

    Hey man, Im considering to buy a 04 VW Jetta that the owner says is having problems steering and is basically needing the wheel turned more than normal for a turn. Do you think that is safe to daily drive and is this the fix I will most likely need to fix the car ?

    after the steering rack was replaced, the airbag light is lit on my dash. any correlation? what could have happened?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite possibly a clock spring issue, if the wheel was turned too far when the rack was disconnected then it possible broke.

    Please help! When I try to put the stirring wheel back into the power steering wrack the joint it doesn't go back in! It keeps pushing the wheel up

      +Daniel San Have you checked the fluid level or is there any caveatting noise??? I have a video on how to troubleshoot a power steering system as well, along with an example of a caveatting pump.

    • @danielfl.9347
      @danielfl.9347 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4DIYers I have checked the fluid, it is normal. I will try to find your video... Lets hope that its not the power steering pump on the car... Just used about 1.200$ on getting other things fixed..

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can have the system pressure tested to determine if the pump is or isn't working. If it's not pump related, then you maybe have a tie rod or ball joint seizing too.

    • @danielfl.9347
      @danielfl.9347 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4DIYers The pump is electro-hydraulic. What does pressure have to do with it? :)
      I guess I have to get it to a workshop and hope that they don't rape me for money I dont have. But thanks for the help so far! :)

    Very good informal video :-). I have a vw polo 6n/mark III. Do you now if it's almost the same procedure? Something else I should have in mind with a polo, instead of a golf? Best regards from a VAG-enthusiast from Normay

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I haven't had any experience with a VW Polo, but I would think it's a similar procedure. I have been looking online from photos and it does look very similar, all the mounting locations seems to be almost the same. The subframe does seems to be smaller though, so there may not be enough to tip it down. Therefore it may need to be fully dropped down.

    • @alexanderjohansen198

      Thanks for fast response. I let you know how it went, and if I had to completely drop down the subframe. Alex.

    Edelman 8917 is a seal kit you could have used.

    Does anyone know the torque specs of the bolts?

  • @MaxSachs
    @MaxSachs 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that what happened to your steering rack? Mine started gushing fluid a few weeks ago symptomatic of a busted seal as opposed to worn chrome on the shaft which should have leaked very very slowly. Too late for me as I already bought the stupid seal kit from RockAuto I'll try installing it and if the leak comes back I'll get a new rack. Where did you get your rack for under $300?
