Yep. I am going to order one tomorrow. Been thinking about it for a little while but this video has pushed me over the edge! Small, light and well built all sounds good plus that aperture ring really appeal. My first ever 20mm. Will be on a7Iii.
after 8 month, which you prefer the 20mm or the 24mm, i want to decide between the two for family travel lens, i have 35mm 50mm 85mm and 14-30mm f4 ( but need 20mm or 24mm f1.8 mostly for shots in low light )
I bought the 24mm in November and have really struggled to utilize the focal length. I was coming from a 35 prime and a 24-70 zoom. I found it often too wide for portraits, but still tight on the environment. With this announcement, I'm wondering if it would be better to sell the 24 and get this plus the 35 1.8. I haven't been able to do any night sky shooting yet, so I haven't been able to test that aspect for myself. Would love to see a full 20 vs 24 comparison, shooting the same subjects!
@@Pierretlambert Yup, 24 has always been an awkward focal length for me. It's still too similar in look to a 35. With a 20 to 35 gap you get drastically different looks, artistic perspective distortion on one but not the other, subject isolation and shallow DOF on the other. 20 + 35/50 and 35+85 are awesome combos.

Thank you very much Pierre. I still have questions about distortion. I have a Sony Alpha 7 IV and there is an option to turn on distortion correction. 1) Do you recommend ALWAYS turning this option ON - no matter what lens you have? I still have the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM2 and the Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 and the Sony 85mm f/1.8. I just want to make sure that there are no unsightly effects when you have distortion correction ON in the camera. I am not familiar with this technique. I don't know if it is good or bad. 2) If I have the lens distortion ON in the camera: Then do I even need to edit distortion in programs like Lightroom, Luminar Neo, etc.? 3) If I have the lens distortion turned ON in the camera: Does this function only work on JPEG or also on RAW photos? 4) Can the in-camera lens distortion then keep up with the lens distortion correction in programs like Lightroom, Luminar Neo etc.? Thanks in advance and best regards from Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Hey Pierre, just moved to Sony A7 III. I am a travel and landscape photographer. Just do it as a hobby. Bought a 16-35 f2.8 as I had heard so much about it. Took it on my trip to Oregon and just loved it. But now I am thinking I need to return that to get 20mm f1.8 or 24 GM and could pair it with a 85mm. Kinda confused. What do you suggest?
I am thinking of getting Sony 20mm F1.8 or Tamron 17-28 F2.8 Astrophotography since I already got FE 50MM F1.8 LENS? . Should I get or Tamron 28-75 F2.8 or Sony 85mm F1.8? For wildlife and sport should I get Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3?
Hi Pierre, I hope you will answer this, what lens were you using to vlog yourself at like @3:12?? It looks great. Was this with the 20mm? Looking to buy the lens you vlogged with here.
I found that about 70% of the time in low light shooting the F/1.4 had 2/3 stops more light than F1.8, however!...30% of the time it actually had a full stop of light!!! I tested this over and over and on aperture priority my Sony camera kept giving me anywhere from 2/3 to 1 full stop of light on the F1.4 vs F1.8! I can’t give up F1.4 cause I love low light stills. That’s a huge difference. Also, 20mm is too wide for me, not as versatile as the 24mm. If I’d had both I’d probably shoot the 20mm 10% of the time and the rest on the 24mm. 24mm F1.4 for the win big time, that’s why it’s $1400 for a reason! By the way my reasons are for stills, for video I have no idea, I don’t do video.

One lens is 20mm and the other is 24mm, different lenses different use cases, it's not a boxing match to bet on. Also f1,4 is not a stop of light brighter than f1,8 and especially for a wide-angle the bokeh will be almost the same between the two lenses.
Yavor Kapitanov my camera did it, not sure why. It was on aperture mode. Put one lens on would shoot at 1/30, F1.4 ISO 2000. Put the other lens on, the camera auto shot it at 1/30, F1.8 ISO 4000. Can’t tell you why. That iso made a huge difference. This was shot at extreme low light. I tested it at another location, same thing! In extreme low light it can make a difference, in all other scenarios it is very subtle. Whatever floats your boat, that’s why they make multiple lenses at every focal length! I’m just telling you my opinion, doesn’t mean it’s for you. You tubers...smh...
@@therandomkorean At the time of testing an a7RII. The same goes for my a6600. The f1.4 will occasionally shoot at 1 full stop faster than the 1.8, but most of the time it shoots at 2/3 stops faster as expected.

I'm deciding which one to get, Sigma 24mm f1.4 or sony g 20mm f1.8 Now I'm shooting all mf lens and this will be my first af lens, I also want to use it for video.
I wish Sony will make a serie of lenses for very high resolution for landscape photography, compact, rugged, with aperture ring, the 20mm 1.8 G lens looks ok, I wish for macro lenses, manual focusing, with aperture and NO stabilizer, I wish for compact and light 300mm 3.0, 400 4.5 and 500mm 5.6, off course only primes ! Thank you very much Sony, oh I forgot, please upgrade the 55mm 1.8 with a AF on/on button (or make it in a manual focus version) plus aperture ring ;)

Ah was just walking by all those Landmarks yesterday. Good to have you down in London :) I'm actually saving up to buy a Sony so this was definitely worth the watch. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Pierre.
Thanks Sanjeev!
Great review!
amazing quality , thanks for sharing
Hi Pierre I am a big fan of your work. I'm stocked to see you using these lens so effectively around London.
I am a photographer based in London, if you are still around I would love to go out and shoot with you, maybe a challenge or help you with a video or anything. I would love to learn more from you, anyways, stay awesome and keep creating!
I dunno samyang 24mm 1.8 sounds like super good deal. This is not bad since it is double the price not triple but buying lens and having extra money for other lens sounds maybe more fun though not sure
Thanks Pierre !
You are such a wonderful photographer. I look up to you so much. Some day I aspire to be as good as you 💖
Love from India
Thanks!
I'm deciding which one to get, Sigma 24mm f1.4 or sony g 20mm f1.8 Now I'm shooting all mf lens and this will be my first af lens, I also want to use it for video.
тоже не знаю что купить. ))
If it turns out to be great wide open for astro I'd contemplate selling my 24mm GM and Batis 18mm.
I've been thinking on selling my batis 18mm for this as well ! Still waiting for more reviews
@@marios4all yeah I'll be waiting but probably just keep what I've got until maybe one day Sony release a wider GM prime. I got my 24 GM for about what the 20 G is retailing for.
Why selling some great lenses and losing money on them to replace it with a lens thats a level belove the GM and most definetly optically never gonna be as good as that !?
@@afrank3029 keeping them for now but I really want Sony to release a wider GM prime.
when's the release for this?
Great video! I think I am gonna buy the lens
For vlog bro 17 ,28 tamron vs 20 mm 1.8 please
Thankyou ❤❤❤
Never sell a GM for a G ! ;) Or a GM 24-70 for a Tamron 24-70 or the 16-35 for the 17-28 etc.... You gonna regret it, been there :/...!
why?
Because of the final result and picture quality...! It has that margin that you could miss if you allready owned it..
@@afrank3029 oh ok you mean the GMs not the f4s lol
@@Viewfinder.Stories Absolutely!
@@afrank3029 coz I just bought the f4s because their prices are sinking hahaha
Are you in London now?! But damn I didn't know the 20mm was dropping!!! I was looking at the Tamron 20mm 2.8 but thought 2.8 wasn't what I wanted. So decided to go to 35 1.8mm. My intention was to get a lightweight portable fast lens that I can carry around with me. So hard to sacrifice to get the 35... damnnnn still quite annoyed!!
35 1.8 is dope too!!
Yea it’s still a lovely one to have!
I hate it because now I got to buy the Samyang 18 mm. I was sure Sony would release an 18 mm :-/
Yeah hopefully soon 16 prime!
@@Pierretlambert Yeah, why not 16 mm? Then you can still use ordinary filters! I buy the Samyang 18 mm now and hope a 16 mm prime will be the next from Sony:-)
18mm would have made more sense. With the GM and Loxia it's hard finding a place for this lens specially when the GM cost the same second hand
great photos! its a beast!
I have Nikon Z so maybe in some point in the future I’ll buy Nikkor Z 20 f1.8 😁
4:07 Where is it?
nice review, but what kind of amazon do you use? 😂🤔 for Germany i can't find anything over your link
Idk! Maybe not up yet 😲
Again a nice video! Greetings from Germany
Danke! ;)
@@Pierretlambert do you have any tips for me, I just started Photography 📷📸
Man I want this lens so bad! Crazy sharp
Hehe you know!
Everyone comment below what gear you use.

Has anyone seen the price on this lens? I can’t seem to find it anywhere yet.
Bryan Swisher around $899
Yes $899!
Just get the laowa 15mm F2. It's sharp as hell and light
This is the FIFTH video of the 20mm 1.8 that i watched! 😅😅
I watched quite a few too, all seem to have dropped simultaneously or something
First live sir from India for 24th time
Yesss
hmm you did not mention any drawback !? ;p
Did you just poke lens to push in your pocket?!
