@@chadblueone2 2 isn't bad. That's a pretty typical season nowadays and it only gets tougher and tougher every single season to get more scorigamis. Eventually we just won't get any and seeing one happen will be a once-per-decade occurrence. In order to prevent this, there would have to be a major change in the NFL's rules, like changing a pick-6 to only be worth 5 points or something crazy.

This channel does a great job of revisiting those quirky situations that were hot topics in the moment but have been long consigned to the archives. The 1996 Chiefs-Bills scenario stands as unique since a tie would have been equally beneficial to both teams. On the final day of the 1977 NFL regular season, the Chicago Bears needed a win over the New York Giants to gain their first playoff berth since 1963. The Bears had to win; a tie would have eliminated them. The Giants had a losing record and were out of the race. Because of a big sleet storm in the greater New York City area, the turf at Giants Stadium waa pretty much an ice rink. The score was 9-9 at the end of the fourth quarter. In the overtime period, it was obvious the Giants were perfectly willing to settle for the tie because of the conditions. They were assured of a losing season and they would be fulfilling their roles as spoilers because a tie would keep the Bears out of the playoffs. But Walter Payton found footing for a run that put the Bears in field goal range, and the field goal went through with nine seconds remaining in overtime. The Bears won 12-9.

This is almost basically the NFL version of what happened in the 1982 World Cup in which Germany & Austria would both go through to the next round if they tied. Unlike this, Germany & Austria were 100% fully aware that a tie would be enough to go through with both teams scoring a goal in the first 5 minutes and then intentionally & lazily passing the ball among themselves without going at their opponents for 80 minutes (with fans absolutely booing the heck out of both teams) until the referee blew his whistle. Algeria (who famously beat Germany 2-1 in the first game of group play) were absolutely livid by this because the result eliminated them from the tournament even though they had won their final group stage match over Chile the day before. Because of the massive controversy surrounding this, FIFA mandated for all future World Cups that the final games of the group stage be played at the same time so that teams would not intentionally play for the tie especially if they knew beforehand that a result like that would get them through. As for how Germany & Austria did once they reached the 2nd round, Austria got absolutely smacked while Germany made the Final but not before creating more controversy thanks to keeper Toni Schumacher's absolutely violent foul on France's Patice Battison in the semifinal that went unpunished. Germany would lose that World Cup final to Italy 3-1.

The greatest tie I watched was a Monday Night Game in October 1973 between the Raiders and Broncos in Denver. It was orange Monday and the crowd was college like wearing all orange and loud. The Raiders took a 23-20 lead quieting the crowd until Broncos QB Charley Johnson drove them down the field and led them to a tying field goal with seconds left by Jim Turner. The crowd went crazy after the tying field goal and Broncos coach John Ralston acted like he won the Super Bowl and Howard Cosell acted like the Broncos had won the Super Bowl as well and for good reason it would be the first time the Broncos had not lost the Raiders at home in its history and even though that was almost 50 years ago that tie I remember clearly and that was a great game.

It is a prisoner's dilemma. If you both take a knee, you both win, but if either side plays to win, then only one of you wins. You both would be better off playing for a tie, but you can't trust the other team, so you play to win that game, even though playing to win that game is wrong in a vacuum.
There is also the entertainment factor. I'm sure if both teams didn't even try, then an otherwise play pseudo-play in game amounts to nothing, and you'd probably have a lot of fans complaining. It might even violate some kind of ethics/fair play issue. Is the commissioner powerful enough to, if he so chooses, eliminate both teams from the playoffs if two teams tried this?

mr head the reason why the do that is for safety reasons as teams that play overtime late on Sunday may have to play a Thursday Night game four days later so they cut the OT to 10 minutes. I do not like Thursday Night games as most of them are bad and they should make them rare and that the teams has to be on bye the Sunday before the Thursday Night game and having the season opener on Thursday Night is fine.

I disagree only because this game, in theory, gave either team a chance to find their mojo with a win and potentially go into the playoffs hot. In the end, it didn't pay off. Good analysis, though. I'd completely forgotten about this.

Tie and you're both in. That nearly happened at the end of the 2021/22 NFL Season. Staley shouldn't have used that timeout in Overtime.

Nice video, but your logic is insane lol. Nobody in Buffalo wanted a tie, we all wanted the Jaguars, if not, the Colts were fine too. Yea the Jags had "momentum" winning 5 in a row, but none of those teams had a winning record. Jim Kelly didn't play in either Colts game in 96. The Bills swept the Colts with Kelly under center in 95 and were 9-2 against Indy in the 90's when Kelly played.
