- Yuen Yuen Ang is an associate professor of political science and a China scholar at the University of Michigan, with a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her works center around China’s rise - one of the most significant disruptions of our times - and its global consequences. She studies China both as a disruptor to the global order and how its government adapts (or fails to adapt) to twenty-first-century challenges. She offers a bold and innovative framework for understanding economic development, which challenges current wisdom from modernization and institutionalist perspectives.
She is the author of two award-winning books: "How China Escaped the Poverty Trap" (2016) and "China’s Gilded Age: the Paradox of Economic Boom & Vast Corruption" (2020).

Deng knew which system was more appropriate for the specific period of time.
Such an inspiring discussion, I’m reading her book now. We definitely need to learn more about China and how they’ve managed to balance the unavoidable corruption culture and economic growth, whether we admit it or not but China has been so successful in pulling off more than 500 millions of people from poverty in just three decades or so. No country in the world has been able to do that, not even the US. Thank you Pak Gita for your truly insightful talks!

It's very original. ie, not parroting the Western line, despite you both Western educated.
3:50 although she was failed during early-stage education in Singapore, the education provided by the Singaporean govt did prepare her exceedingly well not only to compete to get the scholarship for her bachelor in CO, USA but also to put her where she is today. Contrastly, in Indonesia, the education provided by the govt, especially in poor areas, often does not help students with a low economic background to speak English nor prepare them to be rich, stepping up to a higher level in society. Again, only the rich like Nadiem, Maudy Ayunda, and those who were born from highly educated parents can stay rich. Sorry for those who were born in poor families in Indonesia.

Totally agree with Prof. Ang statement that SE Asian does not have the "Branding" right. We do have to speak up. One branding that I think we can push as SE Asian is Diversity and Peace. We are very diverse but peaceful in the region.

It is a socialist and communistic system with capitalistic and marketing characteristics.
It seeks to complement the systems to be in balance and harmony with the needs of society.
Asian philosophy is more worldly-larger picture and complementing.
This is a Buddhist way of looking at the world.

I've watched 5 or 6 of your interview, Pak Gita. Sometimes, I rewatched it twice or thrice just to get more of the nuances. And Pak, I think you are dangerously flirting with autocracy. At first I thought you were just challenging the practicallity of democracy, and yes, it has many-many problems. But, we cannot, or at least me and my family cannot relive the Orba era. I would rather give up half of all of current and future wealth rather than going back to autocracy. I dont think it would work anyhow. If we do go back at some form of autocracy, Indonesia will lose even more of its middle class talents.
