Played my first day in a campaign ever, and I didn't know anybody going into it. The people who play this game are so knowledgeable, but kind and understanding enough to want to help me play along. Love this game.
I love how this video doesn’t just help a new player before going to a game, but me as DM to remember a great outline to explain when a newbie shows up. Good work!
OK. So I have officially decided YOU should be the only one to be on TH-cam to help newcomers learn how to play DND. Your explanations are clear and concise and you go slowly enough to help us keep up. Great job and keep them coming! And of course, Thank you!
I have been wading through “how to play D&D” and “how to DM” for months on TH-cam. This is the first time I’ve walked away feeling closer to actually being able to play or run a game.
I'm an spaniard English teacher and I'm starting to use D&D in small classes of 2-3 students. Eventhough it's extremely hard to play as a DM in my second language I enjoy it a lot, thanks for your videos!
Lol I love how you're an English teacher but you said "eventhough" "an Spaniard". Eventhough is not a word, they are two separate words, "even though". Also, It's "a Spaniard" in English we use "an" before a vowel sound and "a" before a consonant sound. Here's an example. "An Lamborghini" is wrong, it's "A Lamborghini" you also still use "a" before y's and w's. For instance "an wonder" isn’t right even though w is more of an open less constructed sound, it is still a consonant, along with y in "an yellow". The precursor word should allow the a or an to easily flow into the next word without restriction. "An elephant" can be said as "anelephant" because the n allows the resetting of the vocal muscles to allow the next vowel to be said directly from the last letter without the need to reset and start a new vowel, whereas "a elephant" requires the breaking of the flow of speech unless you mess up the word and say "uhhelephant" but even then, you have to change the conformation of your vocal muscles mid speech to start the new vowel and you must accent the beginning of each vowel successively which sounds conflicting and unnatural. Hope this helps :)
@jameswillie Thanks for your reply, I do what I can! However, I think I have improved in two years. Btw, in Spanish we pronoumce an e before the s, so that is the reason to my mistake.
Well, I have a group, but nobody completely explained me how to play DnD. I know the basics, but I often have to ask what dice I have to use next and what I need to think of next.
This is it. I came here BECAUSE didn't really understand what saving throws were or what you roll the dice for either. You not only told me both of those things but also gave me ample information about the game itself. Thank you, I'm definitely subscribing
A good friend of mine got me into playing years ago and to teach me, had me organize the game as the DM using his manuals. A bit of an unorthodox approach to teaching a newcomer but it worked; he was able to participate in the game, giving me a clear example of how to PLAY, and help coach me as a DM which gave me a great understanding of the inner-workings, rules, and so on.
Dude last night me and my cousin decided to try dnd. We went and bought the starter kit and since we have no one that is experienced we went through the rules together. We decided that next weekend we will start and over the week we get to know the rules. This video basically summed up what took us 2 hours to get in 9 minutes
Oh man! These are the kinds of videos I needed when I was starting out. Your older videos certainly came in handy, but these Rule School videos are going too be incredibly useful for new players.
I tried watching a "beginner's guide" with a guy named Sherlock Hulmes and while he annoyingly spends the first 5 minutes of his 30min essay on how not to dress for D&D you actually explain the game core and dynamics in a couple sentences and without silly little "vlogger" gimmicks and editing to overextend your video for that extra profit. Thank you, glad to see someone is doing it right
Hahaha you've almost made me curious to what that video is about, I used to play 2nd edition with a DM that worked at TSR, Inc. and 'how not to dress' wasn't even a thought, since no one cared about that.
Appreciate you, man. Rediscovering D&D during this long hiatus at home. Teaching my wife how to play. You are dusting off some serious cobwebs and I'm very thankful for that. 👍 Subscribed
Thank you so much for your D&D videos. My wife and I recently purchased the Fifth Edition Starter Set, and your videos have given us an idea how to get going, making it much less intimidating. We look forward to seeing more in your series
Trying to start a DandD club at school but neither myself or the students have ever played before so this has been excellent to help us get started. Thank you 😊
You should have more likes and views for this. Been looking to get into D&D and needed more information on how things work. This series has helped me so far. Thank you!
You are an extremely underrated channel, I have no idea how you don’t have at least 2 million subscribers, you have been a massive help to me and others! Thank You
Hey loved you video. I've played d&d off and on for over thirty years. I'm starting out my new generation of player's and I'm coming into the new rules blind, so thanks for the refesher course! 🤗😀
Dude YESS I love the way you’re explaining things and you don’t ever forget any detail or loose end. Your desciptions are precise and enjoyable. It’s a pleasure to learn DnD from you, thanks so much for these vids ur the best!!
I came back home and met an old friend. Him and his friends play D&D and so i joined them for an evening at first to just hang out. I found out i love the concept of D&D and now i want to play :)
This is great! Both for myself as a novice DM and my gaming group who are still trying to learn all of the rules! Very well organized, clear and concise!
I really love RPGs; when we were kids, my sister and I used to play MMORPGs but our mother really didnt like them and would only allow us to play like 20mins a day which obviously is waaay to little to really tackle an MMORPG, especially the older ones. So we were basically forced to create our own tabletop RPGs without even knowing that such things exist at all. We used to play our own RPGs all the time and I still have two complete rulebooks written by us haha. Over the last years the RPGs mostly shiftet over to adventure games (all time fav: Assassins Creed) but now I decided to get a bit into the original CRPG classics, starting out with Baldurs Gate EE. To grasp the game mechanics I was advised to look up how D&D works at its core and I am having a blast here, esp with your videos. If only I had friends who were as fantasy and RPG obsessed as I am, unfortunately I am the only kinda nerdy person of my friends. But I am still very much enjoying your videos and this super cool TTRPG seriously considering buying a starter set and just play with myself or at least one other person. Maybe online. Very cool anyways. You just earned yourself a new sub!
hmmm first time actually knowing what D&D is when i was asked to possibly play it next week with some ppl from school. heard name dungeons and dragons before but never knew what it was...
I play again D&D after a break of 20 years +. I was used to AD&D 2ed, D&D 5e is very good and i decided to swap to this last édition. Your vids are a great help after reading the PHB. Thanks. Greeting from France.
I love how this isn't just an explanation for people who have SOME experience with the game, it's also targeted at people who have little to none and it's very nice I don't know why that detail of it stuck out at me but it just makes it neato
Looking forward to this new series! I'm a veteran of 2nd & 3rd edition, skipped 4e and moved to Pathfinder. Now I'm playing 5th edition. It's great to be a part of D&D again! I love the simplicity of the new rules. Thanks again for this series. Even an old school veteran like me can use a refresher on the rules!
Oh dear, having not played in 40 years my family have decided I have to DM their next play session of the New Year. All their books and stuff look, feel and read so differently from my misremembered and very hazy thoughts on the game and what the rules and tables were for. So thanks for helping me get back into the proverbial saddle and get back into this amazing game.
THANK YOU! Fairly new to all this (played a bit before but not much) and soon to DM for first time. This is a very nice breakdown of my meaty manual. Easy to watch and understand- super grateful!
"Ask questions if you like". - My advice, always like! Always ask questions about the scene, even if you have to think about a question for a moment or two, the DM will rarely reveal all you need to know unprompted, either because he forgot, or there are secrets you need to seek out actively.
Excellent stuff Nate, thanks! I like the way you condense the core mechanics of the game into a couple of elegant guidelines about how to play, and dice rolls - works really well.
Im here because today's my first official dnd session. I listen to dnd podcasts I've played one shot tabletops and watching this because id like to actually understand the dnd rules since they're a little more complex then like the witch is dead or love and lazerbeams
Starting to see why people love the D&D world... Just subscribed. Just started to learn. I've been watching the Paint to Life channel and the Facility D20 channel. But as awesome as they are (and they are), you're the first to explain rules and the hows. Very cool.
This video earned you a subscribe! I'm definitely looking forward to more of this content. I play with new players pretty often, and even after being in a game for a few months, they will still ask me which dice to roll. My answer is to just assume it's the d20, and if it's ever a different one, I'll tell you lol. But I like this because most videos want to spend a lot of time describing D&D or RPGs as a concept, and if I'm being honest, most new players I've come across seem to already get that. They have a general understanding of what happens in D&D, they just don't get the mechanics yet and want advice for being able to keep up and not look dumb at the table. I'm not saying those other videos don't have their place, but a breakdown of the actual rules for beginners is far more valuable in my experience. Thanks for the hard work!
Me, my wife and daughter are learning to play D&D together. My daughter wants to be the DM so we are all enjoying it and having fun learning it together
I’m binging this before my first ever dnd session because I never want to be “that person” I built a character using your character guides to create a shy character so that she doesn’t get in the way of others
TYSM 😭 I’ve played DND a fair amount, but every game up until this point that I’ve been in, the DM has held my hand through the mechanics and such. Now I’m gonna be a DM myself lmao so I definitely needed this review :,)
I started watching TableTopTerrors and they explained it well to an extent but then I still had know idea how to play I just knew what the stuff did, then I watched your videos and now I'm gonna play my first game so TYSM :D
I'm terrified of making any mistakes while playing or before playing or anything like that. So I'm just watching a bunch of TH-cam videos for newbies and wishing some patient long playing dungeon master will take me under their wing.
This is definitely one of the better resources out there when it comes to "Learning the Basics". The initial description of the role of a DM & PC was great, but tbh I think I would still be confused about a few topics he tries to go over. He mentions a couple things as a side note, but rushes past them because they're not the main topic. Might of helped to blur the parts of the Character sheet that weren't necessary to the explanation. Also, the section about "Types of Rolls on the d20" rather than only listing them out I probably would of also given an additional sentence for each and maybe an example of each scenario.
I just had my first session last night. I really enjoyed it. You're helping me learn what basic ideas and tips I should use and its really making me want to play more haha
Thanks so very much for making this video! Very straight forward and easy to comprehend without all the fluff. As a DM, this video is a perfect reference for DND first timers. Keep up the great work! ✌️
I’ve been playing dnd for about a year, but me and two of my other friends who started playing at the same time still barely know anything because the gm would get pissed if you asked any questions. Even in the first few sessions. And would skip ur turn in battle if you took more then a split second choosing an attack. Which would be more understandable if he wasn’t the one who started the dnd club at our school to begin with.
Ah I can’t wait to show this to my new players! Ty so much for this, I’m not good at explaining stuff and they can go back if needed or if they forget something! Ty ty ty!!
All good. Best way to learn is to show up... well, I have two young boys who want to play and we have no one to show us. I am trying to learn the proper way to play just in case we have others join us (which is their eventual plan). I may have several questions after watching your videos. Right now we tried a sample quest but fell short on attacks and how to receive damage and inflict... the rule book is very complicated for a newbie. Remember, not all of us have outside help possible. That’s why we watch your videos. Thanks
Okay, it’s great info, don’t get me wrong, but you must remember that some of us don’t speak this language quite yet. Terminology is a one of the barriers here. You are making things easy...er, but you use terms that the intimidated newbie isn’t grasping the way we would like. And it’s not because I’m old. I’m watching these with my boys who are much younger. And maybe you will get it clearer in another segment or two. We watched your “building a character” (I think it was yours), and we still have empty boxes on our character sheets that make no sense to any of us. Should they be empty? Did we miss something the 5 times we watched the video? Will they get filled in as we progress? We don’t have a clue. This is why I didn’t play when I was younger: my friends didn’t dumb it down for me in the beginning for me to understand. They just wanted to play and expect me to figure out the terms and details and specifics as I played. I no longer have friends to help, I have videos, and thus far, we do like yours over others, but still... dumb it down a little more for the slow-witted.
And don’t be discouraged. It is a challenging game, but you can learn as you go and it is worth it. I’ve spent two hours with someone giving them a one on one lesson, and feel like I only scratched the surface. Another thing I would recommend is actually watching some live plays on TH-cam. This can help. Reading about it in a book or watching videos on rules on TH-cam only gives you a certain perspective. Seeing the game played is very helpful.
Wow! Thank you so much! This is *exactly* what I’ve been looking for. My kids want me to DM for them and their friends. I can totally do the storytelling bit (elementary school teacher ;-), but have no idea what to do with the dice. Between this series and watching a sample campaign through Relics and Rarities, I feel like I know what to do! Thanks! Woot!!
THANK YOU. I love this explanation and I’m glad you could refer me to new DM campaign ideas. I wanted to start out premade so I get the idea to create my own.
a guy rolled 2 20's and made a dwarf in heavy armor fly by flapping his arms really hard
Ah yes, amazing a flying heavy armored dwarf flapping his arms, normal shit
That's - that's not something you see everyday
I don't think I'd allow that. There's limits to what nat 20s can do.

Nice! Thanks for the comment, and good luck!
OMG A DEMAGORGON IS ON THE TABLE YASSS
I started watching TableTopTerrors and they explained it well to an extent but then I still had know idea how to play I just knew what the stuff did, then I watched your videos and now I'm gonna play my first game so TYSM :D
Once again, awesome start of a series. Even though I play as DM each weekend, I need a reboot on my understanding and this does it.
Cool! Thanks for the feedback.
welcome, and once again, I need it again :D @@WASD20
Great job. Looking forward to the next episode in the series.
I'm terrified of making any mistakes while playing or before playing or anything like that. So I'm just watching a bunch of TH-cam videos for newbies and wishing some patient long playing dungeon master will take me under their wing.
I've been looking for some school-friendly videos to point my after school students to. Excellent job man!
Great stuff Nate ! Very clear and concise.
I was falling asleep reading the rules online. Thanks for the vid!
Starting tomorrow as a noobie with my brother after wanting to play for years. Can’t wait to rock my Leonin Barbarian!
Im about to go into my first dnd session with an online group and this series saved my life! Thanks man :)
Have fun!
@@WASD20 they were a party of edgelords lol I had fun but I hope we all grow as roleplayers ahah
Super concise and easy to understand! Thanks for making this series; can't wait for the next video!
Once again this was really helpful to us beginners, thanks Nate
Very new to the game but I love it so far. You were the most helpful out of any video I watched and your attitude is great!
Thanks so much!
Thank you. Our group is almost complete and I NEED to learn now.
I have recently wanted to start playing this, and this helped so much!!!
Awesome video Nate! Can't wait for more!
Thanks, Jeff.
Starting my first campaign soon and our experienced DM sent us here and I'm glad he did.
Great! Happy gaming!
Well done, Nate! This looks like it will be a great series!
Thanks!
@@WASD20 that wedding ring is my kryptonite. Grrr
Thanks. I'm planning on starting a game of two, in which I'll be both the dungeon master and a player character, so I need all the things I need.
I guess Nate just really likes being a teacher. Good video!
Omg I love this just from the start the whole classroom backdrop LOL
As a semi new DM thank you for these videos. They help a ton!!
Ah I can’t wait to show this to my new players! Ty so much for this, I’m not good at explaining stuff and they can go back if needed or if they forget something! Ty ty ty!!
Looking forward to more episodes!
Thanks
Yep. That’s exactly why I made these.
On the character sheet you will have plenty of empty boxes still, yes.
Any of the things I don’t mention are purely optional.
Had a miserable day but your video made me smile again. Thank you nate
Aww, sorry to hear that, Nick. Hope your week gets better and I'm glad a funny looking bald dude talking DnD could cheer you up for a bit. :)
My favorite d&d youtuber.
Thanks! Woot!!
Great! Have fun!
Outstanding. Can't wait for the next one.
yea I'm in bro, fan for life.
THANK YOU. I love this explanation and I’m glad you could refer me to new DM campaign ideas. I wanted to start out premade so I get the idea to create my own.
