Dont scare yourself away...its really very simple if you know a couple of pentatonic shapes. Go watch the 'stitch method' video for a simpler breakdown.
@@jimmrockford9407 especially if you learn your minor and major arpeggios. Hell add in some dominant arpeggios while you’re at it. It’s almost easier to learn Dorian rather than your basic minor shapes, just so your not stuck trying to add the notes later.
“Think of C as the equator”. Genius way to look at it. This guy is the real deal. I teach at Berklee. He sat in to one of my classes a few years ago and blew the kids ( and me) off the planet!

Just mind-expanding & satisfying to begin to really understand how it all works together. Almost like walking through a jungle thinking you'd never see the light of day & finally stepping into an open field of sunshine. Ahhhhh - makes it all worthwhile. What a great explanation by JM. Next thing is to work on the muscle memory to be able to use it well. Most peoples fingers don't naturally work together like that. (thats where the real work comes in).

One way I sometimes think about it, when outside the VIII position Cm pentatonic, is looking at the other side of the coin: Eb major pentatonic in V position. I always struggle having the root note on the little finger and this has helped me a lot on visualizing the fretboard. My guitar teacher, a great one at that, always tells me and his other students to study the different scale shapes both in minor and major, for any given position (e.g. ascending major, descending minor etc).
Learnt more is this 7 minutes than all them bedroom merchants on you tube cheers John you were great at MEN arena in Manchester UK couple of years back great show🤘

If this stuff is new to you. Later check out the Minor Blues and the Mixolydian scale. Most of the 60's Blues/Rock guys used these two scales also, especially Hendrix, Page, & Beck. The earlier blues originators (King trio) stuck more with the Minor Pentatonic, though B.B. (in his instructional video showed he) knew quite a bit more advanced stuff than he usually played (like diminished scales).
It all about the underlying chord i.e if you play under a dom7 chord, you can use both minor or major together because it has a major 3rd and and minor 7 in the chord. if you combine both these scale under say A7 only notes that technically don't fit is Bb G# and F.
OK, I'm onto it. Great advice for all of us guitar lovers. I'll be running those minor and major pents up and down the neck, all mixed and stirred well.

Yes, mix minor and major in the same position, but do it in a different position than just the first position or E shape. I enjoyed listening to his playing. I just don't listen too much to what he's saying.. But that's how we learn fundamentally, watch and listen to the demonstration....
I’ve been doing something similar to this for years and really just thought it was because I don’t know all of my pentatonic shapes and I just found the notes where I found them. I kind of felt like I was working harder than I needed to. I’m all over the neck while other, much better guitarists could stay within the same 4-5 frets. Hmmm. I might need to re-evaluate this.
There were good books in the early 70s covering all of those positions for rock ‘n’ roll and blues licks. Pictures of Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards and Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters…

Gives you a different shape to work with for the same notes, allowing a different pull-off / hammer-on sequence. Nicely put John.
