In the middle of rural nowhere, the noise floor is so low here that it actually does make a difference. The lower the noise floor, the less noise you have, the better a higher end radio will work. Weak signal can use every advantage it can get, and better is better. But, you are right, most people are living in very high noise, rely more on good to great conditions to work, and don't get the most out of the high end options and clarity.

I thoroughly enjoy my IC-705. However, after 1.5 years of use, I'm starting to notice the multi-encoder has started occasionally skipping steps. I'm worried they skimped on the part. That aside, it's the most flexible and feature rich radio I've used. The range of connectivity it provides with USB, Bluetooth and wifi connectivity for control and audio is remarkable. Sometimes I think of it as the ultimate computer peripheral for radio. And I can just take it outside and operate on it's built in battery for a few hours. RX sensitivity is great and with a bit of tweaking of the filters, it can have an almost analog smooth sound to the audio. But I'm not going to make any claims about 'best' radio. That is a personal choice and everyone has different requirements and expectations. It is certainly the most capable and flexible radio I've ever owned however. :-)
I would choose ts480hx with the highest end screwdriver antenna money can buy for mobile, ts590s for HF at home, and ic7300 as a little toy just in case 4m is needed. If I had the money I would get a ts890 or better yet a ts990, like Mr Sherwood recommended, but that money is needed for antennas. For VHF and UHF I would go after ic9700 these days, but I'm done with my old tm255 and tm710d for FM. Right now I'm all excited with my homebrew station for qo100 consisting in a Lime mini and 27 volt amplifier rated for 80 watts. No room left for more radios. Personally I've got a ts480hx with HiQ antenna, and two VHF and UHF FM radios for the car. At home I'm done with a homebrew HPSDR made with an Angelia, Alex filters and 200w 50V final module made with an LDMOS rated for 1250w. External HF amplifier is made with another four modules, to output full legal power rated for 5Kw because there are four 1250 watt modules which give more than enough headroom in a super heavy 40Kg enclosure so huge blowers run smooth and quite at a very low speed. A homebrew manual antenna tuner with two vacuum capacitors goes after the external amplifier. I also enjoy every once in a while, some oldies like IC720 with IC2KL matching 500w amplifier into LDG1000 auto tuner. TS130, ts50 and ts830 are still in the shack because I love Kenwood radios, as well as classic Drake tr4 which is harsh but sounds beautifully.

I actually think so. The rig is not as important as calling and radioing rather than talking about them. Many buy ic7851 and I never see them calling. They are cute and very technological but always the best thing about the radio station is the operator, not the radio or the antenna. If they don't call a 7851, I'll just serve you to look at it. And of course make his wife very angry hi hi. 73
I am just getting into amateur radio and I have been researching suggestions on what to look for in my first radio. Everything I find says "It depends on what you want to do". As someone just walking in the door, I really don't know other than the basics... Be able to get started on the air locally and maybe long distance. I am ok with spending some money, but I can't just spend $1200 for a "does everything" radio. And after I get the radio, some suggestions on antennas and other equipment that would be useful. Any ideas?
Personally I would go for something under $1,000, second hand up to 10 years old.. I would ask the dealer to suggest a rig that already has a USB/Soundcard interface too. For HF, TS-590SG is top banana however a used 847 might also work, as would a TS-2000 (847 and 2000 don't uave the USB / soundcard built in though).
Icom need a replacement for the IC-7200, Yaesu FT-947 and FT-818, Kenwood need an a Shack-in-a-box, AND EVERYONE needs a 4-band mobile and handie with 2m, 70cm, 4m & 6m.
The best radio is the radio you most use and a radio 20years old does the same on HF as the new ones whit out bling bling screens and so on, DSP can be useful but moah. Screen is nice to see activity on the band but do you really need it ? Still got my TS-870s from 2004 and FT-991 from 2016, TS-870s very good radio build like a tank and for HF bands it's good receive and audio so why replace when you will not receive more stations on the same antenna whit and brand new radio ? FT-991 nice shack in a box radio and easy to handel for mobile of field work and has everything needed HF,6MVHF,UHF allmode ! Test some other radio's like Icom 7300 or TS-2000 and the TS-590 but hear not much difference in receive then my old TS-870 then the audio quality is way better on receive. Want to receive more stations it's all about the antenna system, better invest in a better antenna system and coax and you will get more receive then buying a expensive radio. 73's
Great conversation but to dis the best radios, Icom was shocking! The Yaesu's have the absolutely worst menu system in amateur radio. Kenwood a close second. The Icoms are intuitive and easy to operate as well as sounding great both on xmit and receive.
i just got an ic756 proIII. I had a ft1000mp. 756 eats the 1000 anytime. but touching and operating the 756 after the 1000 is like driving a civic after driving a porsche...it feels cheap, the jog is cheap, the plastic buttons ate terrible and the need for an external power supply drives me nuts :/ anyway, the 756 is a keeper.
I am disappointed that no Baofengs cut the mustard!😄 Manufacturers need to brainstorm new models with Amateur Radio groups. I don't know if one radio has everything that most hams want for the price of a car.
I had a FTDX 10 and found it aggravating to operate because of the constant bumping of the VFO when using the other buttons and knobs around it. You had to lock the VFO all the time . Additionally the audio settings are so complex that if you switch out microphones, the time it takes to reset all the audio settings to the new mic is just aggravating. Way too many internal menu items that I found aggravating. Not intuitive at all and I found that aggravating. I was happy to move it along to another owner. That being said the DNR is best in the industry.
Hi all i hear the dx10 sounds fantastic on rx what about tx i currently use the 7300 and i get lots of really good reports on my tx audio how does the dx10 compair ?
COuld have until some w*nker comes in and causes QRM. Mind you we could have also sat in the pub and done the same thing. Of course on the radio, you can't see the other person..
I dumped my Flex 6600 for a K4D and it was a great choice! @DXCommander you'll need to sit with a K4D for a weekend to get a feel for it. A bit more than half the price of you beautiful TS-990, but if I were you, I would hang on to the 990! Experiencing a K4D will give you perspective for informed recommendations.
@@DXCommanderHQ I had a chat with a senior bod at a radio manufacturer recent (Just before I caught COVID). Another fun and informative video. as always, thank!! Cheerio!

im just about to replace due to fire damage to a 756pro and ts2000x with the 9700,7300,7610
there is nothing on the market as a direct replacement for a ts2000x
I know Roger.... I would love a new Kenwood HF/VHF special with USB Soundcard..!
I like all your channels guys thanks keep up the good work
As of April 3rd, the United States Postal Service had put a surcharge on packages over 22 inches (55.8cm) of $4.00 and over 30 inches (76.2cm) of $15.00. The company I work for sells Carbon Fiber push rods for Radio Control airplanes which means the customer that orders 1 of our 36 inch (91.4cm) rods (about 1/4 inch (6mm) in diameter will cost the customer $9.98 for the rod, $9.98 for Priority Mail shipping Plus $15.00 surcharge!
Wow. We use Fedex so doesn't apply. Interesting.
19:18 If I'm correct production samples and promotional materials are exempt from import taxes, or at least they were within the EU. That's why there are so many mail unboxings, because the moment it is on YT it becomes a video prop. Check that out with your tax advisor.
Didn't know that.
I like my Yaesu 5000mp, keep the SDR''s.
if Kenwood brought out a major shack in a box, hf,6,4,2,70,23 with DMR and Dstar . I think they would blow everyone else out of the water
Agreed.
Hello from the colony’s ve7gde,question another great video Cal could you please share link to Gary channel

Hi Jack, here you go: th-cam.com/users/TheGazLab
What are Mike and Gary’s TH-cam channels? I would like to check them out.
OK, on phone so difficult.. Search for Mike-M0MSN and GazLabs
Any ideas?
@MrAmberol Thank you. I will take a look.
The best ham radio is the one you enjoy using.
Lol I am still using my FT1000MP mkV. Interesting discussion Andy VA3XAP
Oh! I liked that rig.. I have the Inrad Roofing filter. Amazing.
@@DXCommanderHQ do you still have the filter? For sale ?
Icom need a replacement for the IC-7200, Yaesu FT-947 and FT-818, Kenwood need an a Shack-in-a-box, AND EVERYONE needs a 4-band mobile and handie with 2m, 70cm, 4m & 6m.
not everyone needs this.. if you cannot put antennas outside.. a handheld like ca 2nd hand ft70d is good or repeaters ..
73's
Nice.
FTdx-101MP 😁
I am disappointed that no Baofengs cut the mustard!😄
Manufacturers need to brainstorm new models with Amateur Radio groups. I don't know if one radio has everything that most hams want for the price of a car.
Actually, I think they do.. But you need to be a really tough DX/Xpedition op to get invited,
Well I'll never be invited then. lol. As long as they talk to the power users, thats good to hear.👍
I love my TS-590 more than my new FTDX10
Yes.. I have nearly finished a total upgrade of my 590. TCXO and military side-plate / handles.. Will make video!
So what did you purchase instead?
The one you do not yet own! :-)
HAHAHA!!!
The best ham radio is the one you build yourself. Sadly I do not have one either, but I dream about making one 🙂
Callum, you must have pissed off the TOP-BAND MaFIA.
Hi all i hear the dx10 sounds fantastic on rx what about tx i currently use the 7300 and i get lots of really good reports on my tx audio how does the dx10 compair ?
Perhaps you could of had this conversation using your radios.
COuld have until some w*nker comes in and causes QRM. Mind you we could have also sat in the pub and done the same thing. Of course on the radio, you can't see the other person..
Put up the biggest baddest antenna you can possibly get away with. Then worry about getting a radio.
Oh yes!
The best ham radio is the one you use.
Oh yes!
The next one
I think Kenwood is gone. Icom and Yeasu survived.
Elecraft K4 anyone?
nice rig.. but super expensive
@@sophoklesgreek3237 So is a TS-990S and TS-890S and FT-101D
Nobody loves the Elecraft family then?
I dumped my Flex 6600 for a K4D and it was a great choice!
@DXCommander you'll need to sit with a K4D for a weekend to get a feel for it. A bit more than half the price of you beautiful TS-990, but if I were you, I would hang on to the 990! Experiencing a K4D will give you perspective for informed recommendations.
@@michaelglauser7877 informed recommendations! Ha ha ha ha
Specialist maybe? Lovely rigs though. COuld never get on with the front panel of the K3.. Performance was good though.
@@DXCommanderHQ I had a chat with a senior bod at a radio manufacturer recent (Just before I caught COVID). I said there is a gap in the market for a radio that covers the LOW band, from 2000m wavelength and up, especially as there are no commercial radios that are made for them. Radio + Matcher + Linear + Antenna. They seemed, 'interested'.
I gave up just around 3:40. Why should anyone make a conversation when the same individual is unable to stop talking and keep listening to the others.
Thanks for the kind comments. Always appreciated. Watch more and you might even get a balanced view!
Call ?! I try to not too Eu and that shit..? Wtf Call

Absolutely no idea what these guys are talking about! It’s like some sort of secret code only know to them!
I suggest you complain :)
@@DXCommanderHQ not that interested!
