    North Station and South Station use to be connected in 2 different ways, 1-the old orange line used to run from No. Station along the waterfront to So. Station, and come around in the South End into the old green line tunnel, That was ages ago. #2-freight lines used to also run on the street from No. Station to So. Station, as well as old trolleys. ALL long gone. I witnessed the last Freight run on the old street line, that was around 1970.

    Thanks for the tour of TD Garden and North Station. I visited Boston several times but never had the chance to see North Station. The first time I visited the trolley still ran on an elevated structure outside the old Garden and station. I am from Philadelphia and this kind of reminds me of when we had two separate stations for our commuter train system. We had Suburban Station that served the Pennsylvania Railroad lines and Reading Terminal that served the Reading Railroad trains. Several years ago our city spent the money to unify the two commuter services now operated by SEPTA which is our version of your MBTA. Your North Station and South Station is a similar story to our separate stations. In your case North Station served the old Boston and Maine Railroad and South Station primarily served the old New Haven Railroad as well as some of New York Central trains running west to Albany. It would be very expensive to connect your two stations but it would benefit service on MBTA’S commuter train service. Our service did have one advantage over yours in that both systems had similar electric MU trains so it was easier to combine our two separate commuter services by putting in a new underground tunnel and building a new underground station under the old Reading terminal. I am sure that many Boston area residents do like the convince of taking the train to see the sporting events and shows at the TD Garden.

    The TD Garden is 26 years old. It was built in 1995. It is almost in the same place as the old Garden Arena was. I watched them tear it down. That tunnel from the TD Garden to North Station less than 2 years old. You used to have to go outside to make that transfer.

    I happen to do this when I was coming from north of the city coming into town in 2012 and I have to tell you seeing TD Garden and North Station I tried to find where the old Boston Garden was but they tore it down years earlier and I have to tell you, going into the station and seeing TD Garden for myself, it was quite an experience I will tell you that very very clearly. Also the Boston Bruins play there.
    Here is where you would get the Amtrak for the Down East service up to Maine.

    You should check out the shopping malls Copley Place and the Shops at Prudential. They are connected through a skywalk (pedestrian bridge between buildings) and have subway connections at Back Bay for the Orange line and Prudential for the Green line on the E branch respectively.

    North Station and South Station had an elevated train connection that was torn down in the 1930s. There have been a number of plans to link the two stations via commuter rail (see North-South Rail Link in Wikipedia), but it would be incredibly expensive.

    • @rogerdean5313
      @rogerdean5313 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just as easy taking the green line to the redline.. Don’t see why they need to add a line

    • @TommyTom21
      @TommyTom21 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rogerdean5313 It would significantly change the structure of the commuter rail network, allowing trains to be much more frequent and merging lines from north to south. For example if there was a N/S link the Lowell line can now run to Providence, it would also bring about the electrification of the commuter rail.

    Very enjoyable video. Ken, what is the difference between a light rail and heavy rail train?

    • @enoerofebowtb7571
      @enoerofebowtb7571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Lynette Borders
      The two car green green line trolleys cars you see near the end of the video are “light rail” trains. They also run above ground in Boston and many other cities throughout the world, and in some instances they run along elevated rail structures. But they’re usually called streetcars, trolleys, light rail, more times than not. They’re shorter, narrower, and lighter than heavy rail trains, and the tracks that they run along has a smaller gage (the rails aren’t spaced as far apart as heavy rail rails are, and they vary in number of cars per set of cars depending on use and physical constraints from city to city; usually two car or three car sets in most cities. Sometimes only one car... looking at you, San Francisco and New Orleans! The orange and white train seen also at the end of the video is heavy rail. Heavy-rail trains are pretty much the opposite of all things described for light-rail, somewhat. More times than not they run in subways, hence, they’re called subway trains (So do some light-rail systems run in subways, like in this video, but they’re not normally referred to as subway trains. They simply use subways but they’re still mostly called trolleys, depending on the city referenced). But many times in some cities heavy-rail trains also run along elevated structures (“the El”) but they rarely if ever run along streets along with vehicular and pedestrian traffic the way that light-rail trolleys do. And depending on the city, a set of heavy-rail cars can be anywhere from two cars to, what, sixteen. Not sure. In this video the heavy-rail orange line train set is a six-car train set. And of course, heavy rail trains are heavier, longer, wider, and they run along a wider track gage (wider rail spacing), and of course they carry anywhere from two to three times as many people. And perhaps in some if not most cases heavy-rail travels at greater speeds. But I could be wrong on that note. Didn’t mean to write a book! Pardon me.
