My husband is a veteran fabricator, and I’m a brand new wood worker. He gave me his angle grinder to use in wood projects when he went to mechanics (automotive) after closing the fab shop (used to make lift kits for side by sides). He HATES wood work, but I still asked him for tool advice frequently. I asked about using the grinder for sanding and leveling wood. He said “no, it won’t do anything but burn it and sandpaper just falls apart”. Well, he was sort of right, but I took an old disc and super glued sandpaper to it. Well, the sand paper fell apart fairly quickly, but it was AMAZING and saved TONS of sanding time! I HATE sanding, but it’s a crucial part of a finished product. I’m just highly impatient, because I typically need what I’m building yesterday lol. He always told me he knew of zero sanding products similar to what I made. I also couldn’t find any at Lowe’s, so figured he was right. I happened to be shopping for something else at harbor freight and they had a sanding disc like what I made! I was so happy I bought 5 😂
Hi Lucy , love your attitude! Sanding can be a chore , when I make a price estimate I allow a third of the time to finishing, this way at least I feel im getting paid for it! Happy Woodworking David
What an excellent How To. No crapping on (if you'll excuse the language). No chest beating, or boastfulness. I love that he doesn't suppose previous knowledge, and explains things in detail so that even if it's your first time using an angle grinder, you can follow along. I want to plane down some warped floorboards, and wasn't sure if it was the right tool, but it's my sander is in storage, so... I'd forgotten how much mess they make. That fact alone was worth watching the video!
Hi Annie thank you for your feedback, Yes it’s gonna make a lot of dust maybe not the tool of choice for a floor if you already live there a belt sander with a dust bag works well or a commercial machine that is made for floors can be rented Good luck with your project

I am building my wife a desk and the table top is out of pallets. Started sanding today with a orbital and a flat sander. Was not happy with the results. I do have an angle grinder and will try it tomorrow. It looks like the right solution. Thanks for the video.
Hello David. I have been using the Festool Rotex for 6 years and I was unhappy with it's sanding speed but I assumed it was the best I could do without buying a wide belt sander. After tax yte Rotex it's almost $700 american. I recently started doing some research and turns out that the rotary mode on the Rotex only goes to 600 RPM. Super super low compared to an angle grinder. Even the festool reps that I've talked to say the 4 1/2" Festool RAS sander is much faster than the Rotex. Well the RAS is just a variable speed angle grinder with a dust shroud attachment. I'm not sure why it's not common knowledge to use an angle grinder with a dust shroud and a sanding pad for aggressive sanding. It's almost unheard of. Now that the concrete industry has mandated dust shrouds for grinding there are good options for dust collection on grinders. More people need to know about this
I wish i had read your comments on the rotax before i purchased one,im so upset with the rotax 125 sanding capabilities and your explanations explain it all.

Great video, thank you. My angle grinder doesn't have a speed setting on it. Would you suggest that I use a much finer sanding sheet to counter it? I'm trying to sand a wooden floor.
Hi Tom I think the heat of sanding will be your biggest problem melting the velcro pad do small areas and cool the disc regularly with a compressor if you have one but if you can beg borrow or otherwise acquire a handheld belt sander that will save you hours of waiting and probably several velcro discs . Good luck take it slowly and wear a dust mask.

Good video. I am refinishing interior of a log cabin and find an angle grinder the best tool for removing the old stain and varnish but it leaves behind small scars that I know will show up when I am ready to clear coat. Any suggestions?THANKS
Well other than a steady hand and a Flap disc. Starting with a coarse grit and working up to finer grits , maybe add one coat of finish then use an orbital sander to remove “scars” and prepare for second coat
Pretty painful seeing it called "just an angle grinder" to be honest lol. Before getting an angle grinder, I tried both a random orbital from Einhell, and also a Stanley Fatmax 1010W Belt Sander. Random orbital removes way too little, and the motor almost gives out the moment you try to add more pressure because it isn't doing anything otherwise... and the sandpaper ends up ruined before it's even managed to effectively do it's job... Then there's the belt sander which is so aggressive, it ruins the shape of the wood way too easily if not used correctly. Angle grinders are by far, in my experience, the best and fastest way to reliably sand down large boards while keeping the wood's shape intact. Biggest disadvantage of angle grinders though, is yeah, they do have a mind of their own and you have to be aware enough to raise it if it starts misbehaving in the hand, lest you have it fly around and hit you on a recoil action. Feels kinda like all angle grinders should have speed controls embedded, but alas, even high brand names like Makita don't make this standard. I do have to say though, it behaves much better if you use it in single-handed mode. Having the extra grip installed does nothing but persuade you to use more pressure than is needed. Sanding with an angle grinder, you only need to make light passes over the wood to get effective results. Start with a low grit paper like 40, you'll be going up to 80, then 120 very quickly, and no pressure whatsoever is needed to remove scratches. Let the machine do the work itself. You're only there to guide it. Using too much pressure compounds with the motor's need to maintain it's velocity... which is where the kickback comes from, causing you to lose control that was not meant to be yours to begin with. Don't steal control that's not yours 😉 Respect your tools, and let them do their jobs.

hi there sir David, what's the right term for that disc @3:00? i love your work and passion of sharing your knowledge..im new in this grinder tool. thankyou and keep informing
This is exactly what i am trying to do! I may be doing something wrong, but i cant find the foam backed disc. could you please tell me more details (brand or whatever you have) for the disc? Thanks!
Hi the disc is a velcro “hook and eye “ backed disc 5” diameter for an angle grinder i buy them in my local hardware store no name made in China sorry I don’t have any more information Happy Woodworking David
Hello David, thanks for your videos. Please, would you recommend an angle grinder or a sander for a beginner? It's a little difficult differentiating between the two, can you please explain. Thank you for your reply.
Hi Moyosore, thanks for your question , a random orbital sanding machine I think is more versatile, it is able to sand large flat areas as well as small parts It moves in a number 8 pattern not just around I would suggest buying this type, an angle grinder is aggressive and difficult to control but can remove a lot of material fast , I hope this helps Best Wishes David
Hi Nuan as with all sanding techniques if you leave deep scratches from low grits and continue with fine paper the scratches will pop out when you apply stain.be sure to sand out previous scratches before moving up to a finer paper,a random orbital sanding machine is made for this purpose but if you onlt have a grinder keep it flat work up the grits for example 60,80,120,220 Happy Woodworking David
This is just an example i buy no name brands in my local hardware store 5 Inch Hook and Loop Backing Pad 5'' Backing Plate with 5/8-11 Threads Sanding Pad Angle Grinder Accessories Sanding Buffing Polishing (1 Pack) a.co/d/hN6Z3VZ
Hi Fekado ,some discs like the velcro disc do not fit with the guard, but always use the guard when you can for example metal cutting discs they are brittle and can shatter with dangerous results, work carefully, best wishes David
Hi Shawn its a 5” velcro backed sanding disc for an angle grinder, i find them in my local hardware store no name made in china I hope that you can find one locally too Best Wishes Happy Woodworking David

Hi Hobomnky , flap discs work best on wood at slow speed on sappy wood like pine they clog up fast and burn the wood you can keep them clean by sanding a piece of dry rtv silicon like what you seal around bath. Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid I got a variac ready so I could slow down my grinder to avoid burning but i ended up not needing it. To my surprise, against all the conventional knowledge I found on TH-cam, I was able to use a ceramic oxide 40 grit disc from 3M with a small 1200RPM dewalt grinder without any burning on a knotty log. I believe it was a spruce log. I now suspect that maybe using a high quality sanding disc might prevent the burning issue. Perhaps it is the cermaic oxide, or maybe 3M's discs just don't clog very easily for whatever reason.

Interesting. I had a quick go at sanding with my angle grinder and 80 grit. It was working but my eye guard quickly misted over since I wore a paper mask that directs my breath to the eye protector, so I had to call it quits. It's incredibly annoying to need glasses to focus, and eye/lung/hearing protection to use an angle grinder.
Hi how’s it going? Yes it’s challenging when you keep steaming up i find fans help by blowing away dust and creating airflow prevents steaming up ,there’s such a thing as a positive pressure face guard by 3m google it Glad you enjoyed Happy Woodworking David
HI Theophilus in the video i just wanted to show what you can achieve with an angle grinder in real life you would have to move the clamps an flatten those areas too or hold the wood with bench dogs eliminating the problem Happy woodworking David
@RusticDavid Sanding with angle grinder makes my wood, blacken like it is burnt. and these back patches are more obvious when i varnish the wood. i still don't understand what causes this back stains. can you please guide me ??
Hi yes it’s burnt, try using a slow speed if you have speed control, change the sand paper Before it clogs, you can unclog the sand paper with a piece of old dry silicone ( you probably have an old dry tube of silicone cut it open and take out dry silicone)then turn on the disc and use the silicone on the sand paper to unclog, good luck Best wishes David
@@RusticDavid is there any way I can remove these black patches? Should i use oxalic acid? Even if i sand it with new paper these black patches won't go away. And yes i am using grinder at lower speed.

Hi Joana, no matter whether you are sanding by hand or with a machine start with rough paper and work up through the grits , in the video I am using 80 grit this is rough then I should go to a higher grit 120 for example then to 220 each one removes the scratches of the one before please check out my other videos on sanding th-cam.com/play/PL2ARkvkCgY7K3QO2CPcKWC_ayZKes4GhO.html. Nice videos but where is your mask? Angle grinders have no dust collection system and as they were intended to be used on metal with the wood side an afterthought they are not easy to sand with unless you have lots of practice. Most beginners would end up with a nice bowl instead of a flat piece of wood. They are great for hacking out loads of material but not exactly a delicate tool!
Hi there ,Thank you for your feedback much appreciated, i mention in the video that im not wearing a mask so i can talk, maybe i should stress the point,,i believe that i give clear instruction on how to use the angle grinder for flattening a board which i also say is not so easily done as said , i believe that if a beginner follows my instructions with a little practice on some scrap they can get a good result , i have taught this to my students at my workshop and i would say the majority can get a good result in hind sight i should recommend practicing on scrap first best wishes David

You're only there to guide it. Using too much pressure compounds with the motor's need to maintain it's velocity... which is where the kickback comes from, causing you to lose control that was not meant to be yours to begin with.
Don't steal control that's not yours 😉 Respect your tools, and let them do their jobs.
Hi Graham Thank you for your great input!!!! Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid I realize, I may have sounded a little pompous in hindsight haha.
Not intended by any means, even if it did come across as so. Thanks for the great content 🤩 After being away from woodworking myself for some time, and having recently rediscovered an old hobby, I'm also actually learning a ton from videos such as this.

hi there sir David, what's the right term for that disc @3:00? i love your work and passion of sharing your knowledge..im new in this grinder tool. thankyou and keep informing
Hi I don’t really have a name for it but its a 5inch velcro backed disc for an angle grinder try google Best Wishes David
What is the first disk you showed called, I use mine to build speaker boxes, and I use an angle grinder all the time.
Hi Holeshot I would call it a Velcro backed5” disc for an angle grinder
Hope that helps Happy Woodworking David

This is exactly what i am trying to do! I may be doing something wrong, but i cant find the foam backed disc. could you please tell me more details (brand or whatever you have) for the disc? Thanks!
Hi the disc is a velcro “hook and eye “ backed disc 5” diameter for an angle grinder i buy them in my local hardware store no name made in China sorry I don’t have any more information Happy Woodworking David
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure Thanks for your comment have a great week
Hello David, thanks for your videos. Please, would you recommend an angle grinder or a sander for a beginner? It's a little difficult differentiating between the two, can you please explain. Thank you for your reply.
Hi Moyosore, thanks for your question , a random orbital sanding machine I think is more versatile, it is able to sand large flat areas as well as small parts It moves in a number 8 pattern not just around I would suggest buying this type, an angle grinder is aggressive and difficult to control but can remove a lot of material fast , I hope this helps Best Wishes David
@@RusticDavid Thank you for your wisdom.
hi Rustic David, are there any problems when we stain wood that sanding with angle grinder?
Hi Nuan as with all sanding techniques if you leave deep scratches from low grits and continue with fine paper the scratches will pop out when you apply stain.be sure to sand out previous scratches before moving up to a finer paper,a random orbital sanding machine is made for this purpose but if you onlt have a grinder keep it flat work up the grits for example 60,80,120,220

Looks like it takes off a lot of stock quick but makes a giant dust cloud too
good video , you got a sub
where to buy this disc. it is much thicker ? what is the name or model. i live in denmark and i cant find it anywhere.
This is just an example i buy no name brands in my local hardware store

i have angle grinder , did you remove the guard
Hi Fekado ,some discs like the velcro disc do not fit with the guard, but always use the guard when you can for example metal cutting discs they are brittle and can shatter with dangerous results, work carefully, best wishes David
Hello David can you tell me the name and where to get the sanding disc you use at the last half of the video?
Hi Shawn its a 5” velcro backed sanding disc for an angle grinder, i find them in my local hardware store no name made in china I hope that you can find one locally too Best Wishes Happy Woodworking David
Are the flap discs you're using labeled for wood? I see them for sale but they are all labeled for metal. Thoughts?
Hi Camper I believe they are intended for metal ,they tend to “clog up” but if cleaned regularly during use with a piece of dry rtv silicone they will last longer,Best Wishes David
dang you made controlling it look so easy!!
Hi Vilcan, How are you?Thank you for your comment, with some practice you will be able to do it too,Happy Woodworking David

Thank you!!!
Hi Max Good luck with your project Happy Woodworking David
I can use one for metal that I have, for the wood?
Yes Fernando it’s the same machine, easier to use with a speed control but youcan do ok without, work safely Best Wishes David
I would be interested in where you bought your sanding attachment.
Toolstation do them for a couple of quid

does the 40 grit flap disc burn wood? or is it manageable
Perhaps it is the cermaic oxide, or maybe 3M's discs just don't clog very easily for whatever reason.
very good but it would speed things up if you precut your sandpaper
Sir, i wanna work with you, i really love carpentry..
Hi Muantea I don’t know where you are in the world, check out my website rusticdavid.com you’re welcome to visit I mainly teach these days. Thanks for your interest, practice practice practice and you will master the craft, good luck and best wishes David
Yes it’s challenging when you keep steaming up i find fans help by blowing away dust and creating airflow prevents steaming up ,there’s such a thing as a positive pressure face guard by 3m google it
Glad you enjoyed Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid I have a fan for the purpose of cooling myself in the hot space, have to switch it on more :)
Alternatively hand planes and edge tools make shavings not dust !

@Andy Maker: Try the fastcap mxv masks. I had the same problem, but these really improve the situation. www.fastcap.com/product/mxv-dust-mask
I like the outcome but what about the part of the wood held by the clamp?
HI Theophilus in the video i just wanted to show what you can achieve with an angle grinder in real life you would have to move the clamps an flatten those areas too or hold the wood with bench dogs eliminating the problem Happy woodworking David

I do this always outside.
@@AsBi1 what type of wood?
@@AsBi1 regarding the acid it won’t help with burns it’s possible the wood has blue stain its a grey blavk stain found often in pine and pale softwood if so the acid may help

Hey ! Thank you Techno!!Happy Woodworking David
Did anyone get the # on the sanding paper used? thank you for this video.
Hi Joana, no matter whether you are sanding by hand or with a machine start with rough paper and work up through the grits , in the video I am using 80 grit this is rough then I should go to a higher grit 120 for example then to 220 each one removes the scratches of the one before please check out my other videos on sanding th-cam.com/play/PL2ARkvkCgY7K3QO2CPcKWC_ayZKes4GhO.html. i like to know how can i use my angel grainder as a wood cuter
Hi Monir , if its sawing wood that you want to do with your angle grinder i have personally only tried a saw attachment once and decided it was not a very safe operation . A hand saw will give you far superior results or a jig saw or circular saw good luck Happy Woodworking Be Safe !! David

I want to use the grinder for a number of things including sitting steel rods, sanding compound from drywall and sanding wood
hi J i dont have any particular grinder that i would reccomend but if its within your budjet get one with electronic speed control best wishes David
@@RusticDavid True you can get good results. Only mentioned mask as very important for beginners to know about dust danger. Telling stuff you know way better than me. Love your simple approach to explaining things. (ex tutor)
