I would be interested to hear about the types of questions any SIMGs who have undertaken this process have received at the interview. The feedback that I have collected is that it can be similar to a PESCI (Pre-Employment Screening Clinical Interview) i.e. there are some questions around your CV and then they ask you about common scenarios. For e.g. in the radiology interviews, they apparently have scans for you to look at.

Wondering if you would share the resources for your statistical data, RE prospect Analysis. I'm be looking for how likely a GP from the Netherlands is to achieve Substantial Comparability, if they have only finished their specialisation within the last year. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to getting to the rest of your videos!
Thanks for the invaluable information. I just had a small enquiry. Hello Anthony. The videos have been great so far and very informative (i still have to see the next three). Im a Specialist Dentist (Prosthodontist) working since three years in India. I read your blog also but ive been having difficulty finding the college which accepts my specialisation for the application process. can you help ?
Hello Anthony, Thanks so much for your insightful videos. What are the chances for Specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine. I will be wrapping up my training as a Reha Specialist in Germany in a couple of weeks. Does the specialty have a good prospect in Australia. Thanks
Hii Antony, which is best time to apply for specialist pathway.. I am about to complete my speciality training (3yrs)in hepatology from India in 2 months..applying just after completion is fine, or to get experience as consultant for few years n than apply..
Hi Anthony, great content as always :) got one question: do you think it´s actually better to do the medical specialist training outside of australia (in my case: germany) and try afterwards to get into australia via the specialist pathway or to try the common pathway right now (2nd year of training in ophtalmology) and trying to get a job as a rmo or hmo, and do the specialist training australia? kind regards, david
Hi David thanks for the question. It depends on what your actual goal is. If you want to specialise in an area and you are already training in that area. Then I’d recommend finishing your training. Then at the least you are recognised as a specialist in your own country. If on the other hand your goal is to live in Australia as soon as possible. I would consider going the other route. Ultimately there is actually no easy route to working as a doctor in Australia these days.
.Thank you so much Anthony! I just have a question. could you please explain what does the "primary qualification(final medical diploma)" and "postgraduate qualification "mean? Just for your information, I have Bachelor of Medicine,Master of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine and consultant physician certificate. Is "Doctor of Medicine" my primary qualification? "consultant physician" my postgraduate qualification? Thank you in advance for your kind help!
In your case the primary qualification is your B Med e.g. your basic medical degree. The postgrad qualifications are the other things you have mentioned.
Thanks for such valuable vedios Dr Anthony. I have watched many of your vedios and theese are really helpful when you are an IMG. I have recently done my MD Psychiatry from India. Are there are any fair chances of getting partial comparability status in Australia? What about the job perspectives too?? Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.
Glad you like them! The job prospects for psychiatry in Australia are very good. Many Indian Psychiatrists have made the transition to Aus over the years.
Hi, you are doing good job here. Thanks a lot for your information. I am a radiologist in China with over 10 years experience, and I am PR in Australian. So I have two questions, first, where and how can I find a position? Second, I plan to do specialist assessment, so could you give me some data about that? Emily
Hi Emily your PR will be an advantage to obtaining a position. You may want to consider applying for an Area of Need role. For example you will see there are many listed here for Radiologists. www.health.nsw.gov.au/AoN/Pages/specialists.aspx In relation to specialist assessment there is some general information in the video series already. I plan to do some more so keep watching the channel.
@@CareerDoctor Thank you for your quick answer. I have already tried to apply some positions, but it seems that IELTS score must meet the requirement for register. So I plan to get 7 in four parts of IELTS, then apply to specialist assessment. Do you know some radiologists from China who get positive results in the assessment?
It is generally best to try to score better than the minimum on the IELTS. A score of 8 overall for example is a much stronger indication to employers that you have the level of English communication to perform the job well. Each year there are only generally a handful of Chinese specialists seeking recognition in Australia. For example in 2017 2 sought initial assessment and both were found partially comparable. Sorry, I don't know which specialties they applied for.
@@CareerDoctor You are so kind to tell me the significant information. I also need to understand specialist interview process, which makes me very anxious.
@@CareerDoctor Hi Anthony I am a doctor with specialty of Internal Medicine from Indonesia, regarding Area of Need (AoN) you just mentioned, is it better to have a secured AoN position first then doing the Specialist Assessment rather than directly get ourselves to Specialist Assessment?
hi Anthony! really helpful videos, thank you so much. some questions i have, if you are kind to answer them. my husband has finished his MBBS followed by MS general surgery (3years post graduate course) followed by M.Ch urology (3 yrs degree course in urology in India) completed in 2017. Since then till present he is working as an consultant in urology (5 years experience ) .I just want to know if he applies for specialist assessment pathway, what are the chances for being partially comparable and how easy is to find a job in urology for supervised training . I have done diploma pediatrics (DCH) and 10 years experience in pediatrics, which pathway i would be eligible to apply?
Hi, I’m an OBGYN with 3 years work experience after my residency and fellowship training. Will it be tough to go to Australia using the specialist pathway for OBGYN’s (as I would usually read it is). Considering taking the exams and go through the process back to the basics. Thanks for your advise!
Hello Anthony. Thanks for the invaluable information. I've completed my DNB Orthopaedics in 2018 and Post-residency I have three years of experience. What are my chances to match as a substantially comparable?
@@CareerDoctor Thank you sir for the information. Even for partially comparable, the chances are low ? Also does English proficiency test matters , PTE over IELTS? Which should I prefer, if at all I start preparing.
Hello Anthony ! Very helpful and informative video ! I am a MD radiologist from India with 9 years of experience post my MD, currently working in Middle East at a specialist post. I wanted to know with my experience of 9 years, is it possible for me to get a substantially comparable post? Or if I get a partially comparable post, how many set of exams I have to go through after period of supervised training of 24 months Thank you and regards !
Great insight to the pathway sir. If one has a Drnb (Directorate of National Board) 6 year Neurosurgery training (surgical neurology) program from India will one be able to make it to a substantially comparable category of specialist registration pathway?
Hi Anthony, thank you so much for your helpful videos. Is it true that with regards to surgical specialties like Obstetrics and Gynecology, it is much more difficult to be considered as comparable even with good knowledge of English and good work experience? Is there less need for these types of specialties?
Hi Mansoureh. First off the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) would not take kindly to being referred to as a "surgical specialty". For the public data that we have from 2015-2017 the College with the lowest rate of deeming applicants comparable was the College of Dermatologists with 38.71% and the College with the highest rate was the Royal Australasian College of Physicians with 85.48%. RANZCOG was 4th hardest on the list but still with an overall rate of 67.21% deemed comparable on assessment.
@@CareerDoctor In India the gynecology postgraduate get the degree as M. S gynecology to imply that it is Master of Surgery. So why is RANZCOG not thinking of it as a surgical speciality?
@@CareerDoctor lol, they do surgeries And why most of the IMG s don't get through Ranzcog specialist pathway is because they are not trained for endoscopic surgeries
Hi, I came over to Australia via competent authority pathway and now have general registration since 2018, while here I applied for and got SCP in psychiatry, now I am in a bit of a problem as I cant get provisional registration for supervised practice as a specialist, because I have Gen reg, I cant get specialist reg as I need 12 months supervised practice before fellowshipI don’t know as yet what my prospective employer will think of this as credentialling for me might be an issue, also I cant work as a “ specialist” while on gen reg , I am not sure if there is an appropriate way around this issue. Any words of advice will be helpful
Hi Anthony! Your vids are really very helpful, thank you so much. I have some questions, your kind answers would be greatly appreciated, 1. I finished my 4-yr radiation oncology residency training in 2017 and wokring as sepcialist in my own country (Iraq), how much possible to go through specilatist pathway? Would it be possible to get job in that field if I would be successful? 2. How much possible to get a position in Area of Need while I am going through specialist pathway steps? 3. Language profiency qualification exam is necessary in specialist pathway? Thanks in advance Jalil
1.that would be enough training time to be worth applying. 2. Area of Need is done at the same time as specialist pathway assessment. 3. You need to do an English test.
Would it be true to say that partially comparables get specialist registration just 1 year late than substantially comparable ones ? .... as supervised work is 2 years(inclusive of fellowship & assessment exams) for former and 1 year for latter.
Yes this is true although it also simplifies matters a bit. SC doctors have fewer requirements to demonstrate than PC. Whilst the majority of candidates progress to specialist registration a small number don’t get recommended and it’s likely that relatively more PC doctors don’t get recommended in the end.
Hello Anthony. I'm an Orthopedist from Argentina. You didn't mention South American statistics in the specialist pathway. Do you think that we are in disadvantage against English speaking countries?

Hi Anthony, I am from India just moved to Australia. I finished my 6 yrs of MBBS including the internship followed by completed my masters in ENT (3 yrs course). i was wondering if I could apply for specialist pathway in Australia.
Hi Sir..first of all thankyou so much for helping us IMGs..your videos are too good..you're doing a great job..keep up your good work.. I am a fresh MBBS graduate from India..should I apply via standard pathway or complete my specialisation in india and apply via specialist pathway?..which is better?..as far as I know..in standard pathway..I have to clear AMC,redo my internship(which I already did in India),do my residency..then apply for specialisation..all of which takes minimum 5 years But in specialist pathway..I should finish my Indian Pg exam..study MD..apply for Australian specialist college..undergo training..all of which takes minimum 4 years.. I need not attend AMC,I need not redo my internship..and I feel specialist recognition better than AMC..what's your opinion sir?
Hi Supriya. The best answer is it depends. If you are thinking you want to establish yourself as a specialist in India first then I would do that. If that is not your goal then maybe #standardpathway is better. Both approaches have their pros and cons. Your analysis of both pathways is generally correct. With #standardpathway you do not need to do internship again. There is a provisional registration year which is similar to an internship. But its not an internship.
@@CareerDoctor Thank you for your reply sir..but there's residency in standard pathway which I should do right?..sir,is there anyother ways to contact yu other than TH-cam sir ? (bcoz I have a lot of doubts to be clarified..)

Hi Sir. I have done my MBBS and MD in Dermatology from India with 1 year experience after MD. Should I apply for the specialist pathway or the standard pathway? Also would MRCP(SCE) help in any way?
I don’t know why you would want to apply for standard pathway if you are already qualified on dermatology on your own country. The MRCP won’t help very much. It would be best if you worked as a consultant for a couple more years.

Hello Sir, I have completed my MBBS and MS ophthalmology in India and I am currently doing my fellowship in cornea. I would like to know the possibility of getting through specialist pathway for ophthalmology and also if it is easier if I clear FRCS. Or Is it easier if I apply for fellowship in Australia? Can i apply for job after fellowship there?
Hello, it will mainly come down to the length of your training in India. In general, I would recommend going for the DNB in India rather than doing the FRCS, because the FRCS on its own does not mean much here in Australia and also it relates to surgical training rather than Ophthalmology (i.e. its the wrong College).
DNB Is seen as doing something additional and higher standard on top of the MS. Because Indian masters are only 3 years you need to demonstrate more training and assessment. The MRCS is less likely to be helpful.
Hello sir, I did mbbs, DNB in pediatrics in INDIA with two years of experience as a registrar in pediatric and neonatology department. Am I eligible to apply for specialist pathway.? If so, what is my likely comparibility and getting job Thank you
Hello Anthony, Just a small question, I'm planning to take up DNB OBGYN in india which is a 3 1/2 year course , To apply for specialist pathway later I will need atleast 5 years experience to be substantially comparable right? So in this case what would you suggest to do in the meantime after DNB to add up as experience 1.MRCOG and gain experience of 2-3 years in UK 2.fellowship or superspecialisation in india in a subspecialty in OBGYN which is again of 2-3 years ? As both will give me extra 2-3 years experience and in total 5-6 years experience in the field of OBGYN
Honestly that’s a very complex question. I think you will find that no matter what trying you do the chances of substantial comparability are small. I’d recommend a strategy call and we can go into more detail for you.

"consultant physician" my postgraduate qualification? Thank you in advance for your kind help!
In your case the primary qualification is your B Med e.g. your basic medical degree. The postgrad qualifications are the other things you have mentioned.
@@CareerDoctor Thank you very much Anthony!
You would both have reasonable prospects with the assessment. Finding an initial job for your husband will be the tricky bit.
Hi, I’m an OBGYN with 3 years work experience after my residency and fellowship training. Will it be tough to go to Australia using the specialist pathway for OBGYN’s (as I would usually read it is). Considering taking the exams and go through the process back to the basics. Thanks for your advise!
It very much depends on the years of training you have done
Hello Anthony. Thanks for the invaluable information. I've completed my DNB Orthopaedics in 2018 and Post-residency I have three years of experience. What are my chances to match as a substantially comparable?
Honestly very low as RACS is a tough assessment
@@CareerDoctor Thank you sir for the information. Even for partially comparable, the chances are low ? Also does English proficiency test matters , PTE over IELTS? Which should I prefer, if at all I start preparing.

Hello Anthony !
Very helpful and informative video !
I am a MD radiologist from India with 9 years of experience post my MD, currently working in Middle East at a specialist post.
I wanted to know with my experience of 9 years, is it possible for me to get a substantially comparable post?
Or if I get a partially comparable post, how many set of exams I have to go through after period of supervised training of 24 months
Thank you and regards !
Unlikely to get SC. The reason I say this is that RANZCR assess about 95% of all applications as Partially Comparable.
Great insight to the pathway sir. If one has a Drnb (Directorate of National Board) 6 year Neurosurgery training (surgical neurology) program from India will one be able to make it to a substantially comparable category of specialist registration pathway?
I wouldn’t want to speculate. It comes down to a range of factors.
Suggest you book a call with me.
Getting a post on neurosurgery here is quite hard.
Thanks a lot!
@@CareerDoctor In India the gynecology postgraduate get the degree as M. S gynecology to imply that it is Master of Surgery. So why is RANZCOG not thinking of it as a surgical speciality?
Because RANZCOG is not a group of surgeons.
@@CareerDoctor lol,they do surgeries
And why most of the IMG s don't get through Ranzcog specialist pathway is because they are not trained for endoscopic surgeries
Hi this is really a credentialling issue not a registration issue. What is the job you have accepted?
Hi Anthony! Your vids are really very helpful, thank you so much.
I have some questions, your kind answers would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance
Jalil
1.that would be enough training time to be worth applying. 2. Area of Need is done at the same time as specialist pathway assessment. 3. You need to do an English test.
Career Doctor
Thank you very much for your kind reply!
How much USMLE certificate would be helpful in my application?
Only useful if you complete all 3 components and 2 years of ACGME accredited residency training.
@@CareerDoctor if someone has done ACGME recognized surgery training from qatar, can he get acceptance from RACS.
You are getting ahead of yourself in terms of the steps required.
No but you are at a disadvantage against the 4 competent countries.

Hi Anthony, I am from India just moved to Australia. I finished my 6 yrs of MBBS including the internship followed by completed my masters in ENT (3 yrs course). i was wondering if I could apply for specialist pathway in Australia.
You can. But you have not mentioned any consultant work. So that gives me doubts.
Hi Sir..first of all thankyou so much for helping us IMGs..your videos are too good..you're doing a great job..keep up your good work..
I am a fresh MBBS graduate from India..should I apply via standard pathway or complete my specialisation in india and apply via specialist pathway?..which is better?..as far as I know..in standard pathway..I have to clear AMC,redo my internship(which I already did in India),do my residency..then apply for specialisation..all of which takes minimum 5 years
But in specialist pathway..I should finish my Indian Pg exam..study MD..apply for Australian specialist college..undergo training..all of which takes minimum 4 years..

Hi sir.what is the scope for an ent surgeon from India with MS degree...what is the advantage of taking dnb?? Does having Mrcs offer any advantage
DNB Is seen as doing something additional and higher standard on top of the MS. Because Indian masters are only 3 years you need to demonstrate more training and assessment. The MRCS is less likely to be helpful.
Diploma in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery
A diploma would not be considered enough on its own for specialist assessment

Hello Anthony,
Just a small question,
I'm planning to take up DNB OBGYN in india which is a 3 1/2 year course ,
To apply for specialist pathway later I will need atleast 5 years experience to be substantially comparable right?
So in this case what would you suggest to do in the meantime after DNB to add up as experience
1.MRCOG and gain experience of 2-3 years in UK
2.fellowship or superspecialisation in india in a subspecialty in OBGYN which is again of 2-3 years ?
As both will give me extra 2-3 years experience and in total 5-6 years experience in the field of OBGYN
