And remember, she's got a pink backpack on, though I'd assume she takes if off for the swing. Rewatching this episode I learned something about DMing that never occurred to me before. Matt intersperses tense combat and role playing moments with frequent festivals and parties - the break of the tension is not dissimilar to an actual feeling of relief (like a weekend or summer break) and I imagine keeps the characters (and players) from getting combat fatigue. Seems a useful and important facet of DMing long arcs. :) Matt shows this old man the ropes yet again.
How did you use to DM before? Did you send the group from one dungeon to another fighting lich after lich? ^^ To me at least, granting the characters (and players) a break to do stuff that regular people do seems like quite the ordinary thing to do as a DM. After all the characters are part of a living world where plenty of regular things happen on a daily basis :)
@@janelantestaverde2018 Way to not come off as condescending, in any way, shape, or form. You totally don't sound like you're just trying to speak about you as a DM :)

Bump, guess that pinning was a fluke, later on, they probably pin consistently. 19:43 "I feel like I slept outside?" Heh, characters, am I right? Dang, that connection to the baby line, wasn't terribly far-out but that was good reasoning. I just got heavy deja vu but I feel it was the exact same so, probably not of Nott's experience with festivals. Wait, why does Beau want to buy the tavern? I can't think of any reason at all. The mythical three natural one's. Perfect. Ahh, that arm-wrestling match!! Had the same intensity as Kern with just that one cryptic comment and the continual rolls. These guys from the... something seem pretty cool. I can smell the Ashley-leaving-in-game-reason scent from here though. When Beau says, "Maybe, we talk about our feelings." Ashley and Liam's expression is funny. These types of uses of magic like the Victory Pit are cool. Fun ways of using the fantasy elements like in Vasselheim, that one gravity bridge, the farms and other occupations that use the blessings of the gods directly. The tension to see Frumpkin punted every time he's spotted is palpable. Heh, the dice underneath Yasha says 2 when she's twice her size. Glad Yasha got a HDYWTDT. Aw hey, toothy maw, long time no see! 3:41:00 And Laura swatting it down. 2nd HDYWTDT. Yasha's doing well in combat which is nice to see. Do they(or did they) give 100$ for the nat 1's in advantage? Oh gosh, they don't do well in trying to make an actual plan of attack, they just argued for 5 minutes straight. Combat used to be pretty meh for me, skipping through once I got the basic gist of sneak attacks, hunter's mark, spend-a-grit-point, Bigby's hand, the couple odd dozen druid attack spells, etc; I used to just skim for the big numbers and for boring encounters I often just skipped most of it. After a bit of experience, forcing myself to analyze the battle map after watching Travis' infectious excitement, you can find a lot of fun in it. You can share in the mind of the players: of Laura trying to conserve spells, using cantrips at low levels, being spoilt with casting at a higher level, trying to position for flying creatures, sneak attack! and just watching terrible plans(granted, you can see that without any experience, too). Art mention 4:12:10 So handsome **Definitely spoilers** Nott with the festivals being a goblin and spoilers I've heard make me definitely think of what is truly happening. @@justintimeleave1360 Sometimes, as players we decided to go to events even though it wasn't necessary because it was kinda obvious that our DM planned for it, and well, we didn't want to leave him hanging there. Sometimes that's a bit of meta-gaming that needs to be done, so your DM won't have prepared stuff for hours only for it to never show.
Yeah, you learn fairly quickly that going in direction X is more likely to lead to an interesting well thought out prepared adventure, whereas going in other directions will lead to some random encounters while your DM tries desperately to wing it. You get pretty good at finding and following direction X without even thinking about it, through Pavlovian conditioning if nothing else. That said, recycling unused encounters is a thing.

It's been slow building, partly from Ashley's necessary absence from the table, but ever since she accepted flowers from Nott and pressed them in her book, there's been elements of her softer side peeking through here and there.
Isn't it like that most of the time? That people who look really intimidating, who you think "Don't make them mad, or a stain on the floor will be all that is left of me! They look like they eat a bowl full of nails for breakfast, without milk!", are really gentle giants and big softies?

Still catching up in august 2019..
I love the image of a Tiefling girl with a pretty dress and decorated horns skips up to a strength test SMASHES it then skips away
This so much. One minute you're watching the fecking cutest fanart of her, the next she goes smashing things with a hammer, throwing a half-orc and rowing upstream in a packed boat
And remember, she's got a pink backpack on, though I'd assume she takes if off for the swing. So this waif comes skipping up, takes off her backpack like a school girl, then rolls the boulder with one swing. Then she throws her bag over her shoulder and skips away.

ACAB, but Some Guards Are Nice
Rewatching this episode I learned something about DMing that never occurred to me before. Matt intersperses tense combat and role playing moments with frequent festivals and parties - the break of the tension is not dissimilar to an actual feeling of relief (like a weekend or summer break) and I imagine keeps the characters (and players) from getting combat fatigue. Seems a useful and important facet of DMing long arcs. :) Matt shows this old man the ropes yet again.
He DM's like it's a video game RPG. After a tense dungeon you get to the next town and chill and enjoy your new treasure.
How did you use to DM before? Did you send the group from one dungeon to another fighting lich after lich? ^^
To me at least, granting the characters (and players) a break to do stuff that regular people do seems like quite the ordinary thing to do as a DM. After all the characters are part of a living world where plenty of regular things happen on a daily basis :)
@@janelantestaverde2018 Way to not come off as condescending, in any way, shape, or form. You totally don't sound like you're just trying to speak about you as a DM :)
@@Olorile Perfect, then everything worked out well as I was trying to share my personal experience with somebody else while pointing out the necessity of certain aspects of DMing without insulting their personal way of DMing.

Art mention 4:12:10 So handsome

Brings new meaning to "epic fail"... Marisha was laughing so hard she was doubled over with her forehead was on the table 😂
sandbags are the new doors :D
I like how these “nerdyass voice actors” are having casual nerdyass conversations in character, like discussing whether if a skeleton is considered a dead body.
Yes! FIght scenes I don't care for, but tiny stupid conversations about syntax? YES, please!
@@nikkikindinger2718 Legit, the fight scenes are actually my least favorite parts of these campaigns, not that I dislike em, I just like everything else more.
Matt's face getting more and more concerned as Ashley counts up all the damage Yasha is doing is hilarious
I appreciate the meta gaming pigeon on Sam's flask.
"Coo!
Use Mage Hand!
Coo!"
OMG, I hadn't noticed that!
In my head cannon its a raven and that raven is Vax telling them from beyond the grave
I couldn't see what that said, Thanks!

I find it funny and cool that I can hardly binge watch TV shows or movies anymore, but I can sit through 2 or 3 of these episodes a day with absolutely no problem. It's great. My ADHD is like "You know what? We like this. Let's focus."
Was just thinking that today! I think because it is so refreshing unpredictable, random and real, the characters are well developed and Matt's pacing with tension and fun is perfect. Plus we get to see the in between plot points unlike a movie or a tvshow
oh my goodness yes! the hyper fixation is real
I've never felt a comment as much as this one!
yes!!! 😜 from my head to my toes!
Same! The sheer randomness probably helps a lot. With a show you can usually predict some of what will happen. In DnD you can guess a little of the major plot that within the next few episodes, but everything is so wildly chaotic it might take a total left turn. Not to mention the action/checks that are almost fully based on luck. All of that in a nice little magicy-story bow.
I don't know if I'm in the minority or not but I have to say that Caleb's Quest for Knowledge is one of my favorite sub-plots/character interests in the series.
You spelt smut wrong
Caleb's book boner is my favorite part of his character.
Shini HA! 😂
Caleb's quest feels like the one Tiberious Stormwind (from Drakonia) Should have been doing in campaign 1
I have to skip all of liams moments, he's always been a whiny drama queen but now he's a douchbag on top of all that.
The look of just sheer glee on Travis' face every time Ashley gets to do cool barbarian stuff is so friggin' fantastic.
Molly throwing the sack and hitting it on the first try right after Fjord failed 3 times in a row is the most Molly thing that could've happenned
I love how when Nott get's angry at the Eagle Shot, even the dice are like 'yeah, we need to roll high here so she can have an epic moment', and Nott just proceeds to Robin Hood it. It just was so perfect, like the shooting range scene from Back to the Future 3.
Crownsguard: Hey uhhh...where did you learn to shoot like that?
Nott: Local Tavern. *takes a swig from her flask*
I feel like a lot of the game scenes just rolled epic little moments for all the characters, worked wonderfully for everyone, all the losses made the sims feel way more fun
I love how happy they are for each other, when Ashley roles a nat 20, then just murders the beast. It's pretty great. Besides that Matt is always so great as a DM working with the players and as a story teller, I am always impressed.
Winning is having fun. Everyone wins here. :-P
"Macaroni salad is the wild west of culinary delights."-Matt Mercer
the look on marisha’s face when matt said “oh no” after ashley’s roll was priceless she immediately knew the HDYWDT was coming
You could see the excitement building up in her body language. I almost thought she was gonna shoot up like a rocket and break a hole in the ceiling or smth
Molly: *Misses two vicious mockery back to back*
Molly: *Finally hits a vicious mockery and rolls a 1 for damage*
FeelsBadMan
I played a ranger once, except she was the exact opposite from Molly in that part, she had a plus fourteen to hit and always hit even if she got a natural one but I always got terrible damage
That explains why he switched to a cleric
- Has two badass glowing swords and most health in the party.
- Always stays 30ft away and only uses a spell that does 1d4 damage.
manu mainio the irony being that when he goes Melee, he dies

I like how everyone got excited about dressing up for the harvest last episode, and Matt was the only one who participated.
Love no one questioning the Goblin's history of attending weddings and seasonal festivals.
I assumed she was lying through her teeth
Also how no one question why her default disguise is a halfling, from what I know, she never disguised as a gnome or a dwarf or even a kobold, always a halfling
@@calescentlight5486 stay tuned =]
Like Goblins don’t party. And in this world of Orcs building libraries and marrying elves, I can see goblins having weddings..
@@AceBradMan halflings are the right size and well liked. Dwarves are too tall, and kobolds aren't seen fondly by a lot of people. Gnomes might be an option but still people aren't as fond of them as halflings.
Molly: 'I'll distract people for you!' Immediately gets distracted by something pretty. Molly, I love you but omfg.
(but im glad caleb saved the spell slot!)
Pan its a ritual so the danger wasnt there to lose one
@@squattingheads Masking a ritual spell - ie: 10 minutes of incantations, gestures, etc - is kinda...tough.
What kind of weird "reproductive ritual" do the dark elves have, that they need advantage on an attack roll to accomplish it!?! Scary.
Rick Neal Jr. maybe it’s for kidnapping children and turning them????They did mention that the attacks that were happening near the border involved kids. Idk it’s just a theory.
