@@MV-ri7zu I get it, 3.5 is probably overall better from a mechanics standpoint. The beauty of 5e is that it's easily taught which makes it accessible to the masses. The mechanics are so simple. I used to run a game store and 5e made the game accessible not only to the majority of people that entered the store but to kids as well. We ran Sunday Kids DnD and Wednesday DnD which hit really good numbers and I doubt 3.5 would of been able to do that.
@@Linogewillkillallofy Well considering when she's downed by a gelatinous cube, the _entire party_ panics and spends the rest of the episode looking after her, it might well break them.
Or possibly makes you wonder, what the caravan would have done back to them. 6 carts filled with people... That's a lot. And like Beau had said, who knows what weapons or training they have. I feel like he could've been thinking "This won't go well for you guys." as in the fear was for them, lol
I think it's so cute how everyone looks to Fjord as like the leader of their little group. "We have to do this, right, Fjord?!" "Fjord, where should we put this?" It's so fucking adorable and I love how naturally it happened in the groups dynamic.
Kinda weird too tho, considering how leaderless the last campaign was, I mean maybe the twins could be considered the leaders but a case could be made for Percy as leader as well 🤔
Oh she knows. And I think she does it because she is a very good troll. I mean alone the rearanging of prices in a shop. I laught my ass off so hard. She is an agent of chaos. XD
Words can't describe how much I love that Sam took the Arcane Trickster subclass. It's mechanically a great subclass for a kleptomaniac; character-wise it's the ideal subclass for a con artist who's becoming fast friends with an inveterate prankster; and they can only learn wizard spells, so it's also the perfect subclass for someone whose best friend is a wizard! It's beautiful, I love it so freaking much.
Matt-The entire town is, decimated. Buildings have been burned, the inn is literally a candle, lives have been lost and dreams destroyed. Caleb-Ooh, charcoal.
as a DM planning to have my PCs meet a few gnolls soon, i found myself enjoying this a lot and trying to mimmick these sounds while watching. i've arrived at 2 conclusions: 1) i'll never be as good as Mercer so my gnolls will just do basic barks lol 2) i shouldn't watch CR at 2am when other people are sleeping
Not gonna lie, the super cuts of their relationship dynamic are like 80% of the reason I finally started watching the show, instead of talking about how I should watch the show
everyone had me believing Caleb was this broody quiet wizard but I swear he's just a dork (with a sad backstory if i heard correctly) with a love for reading and knowledge and i had to pause the video cause my heart swelled when Caleb picked Nott up on his shoulder after she cast that spell and was just bursting with joy and proud of her.
same i got spoiled many things of C2 before this first watch i'm doing now, but i knew NOTHING of Caleb & Nott's relationship and the wholesomeness of it is one of my favorite thing at this point ! they're so precious i love them so much!
@@mayapplesauce1396 same! I'd had which couples end up together and a few other details spoiled for me but I was not prepared for the adorableness of Big Bro Caleb and Lil Sis Nott. 🥺
Did you see his face, when he learned during the game that Darin da Paul had played D&D with Matt's mother before Matt was born? If not, go back and watch it. Travis is a jock, but an emphatic and kind jock.
When he opened the book while looking for the monk ability to deflect arrows, and he literally opened it on the correct page right away I was very impressed haha
After watching the whole first 5 episodes I can conclude what I think are roles for the m9! Fjord : The one braincell that wants to live in this group Jester : that one girl from despiclable me, the It's So Fluffy I'm Gonna Die! one Beau : Lesbian disaster Caleb : Tired with everyone german TM Nott : I will kill everyone in this room if something happens to caleb Molly : *begins to bleedout* I'm fine! Yasha : ...How did I end up in a best buy?
You know, in german, unicorns are called "Einhorn" and squirrels are called "Eichhörnchen"; when my sister was a little child, she was afraid of the prospects of squirrels, as she apparently misunderstood what they were. She thought of "Einhörnchen"; in her mind, there were little unicorns running around in forests. This episode reminded me of that. :D
At first you could tell he was struggling transitioning from British to German cause he spent so much time as Vax but now he is getting comfortable speaking with a German accent for Caleb
they all tend to do that when they want to make it quick and clear that they're asking for some kind of ruling or decision from the DM and not just chatting or making a joke to matt or interacting with one of his npc's. matt also does the same by making sure to call each pc by their character name to give the indication that they need to make a in game decision
Still one of my favorite moments was in first episode when Jester scammed Knot in gambling and Fjord said she should give the money back, her response of "But why though....."
It's pretty scary to be honest. Like dangling the frog-demon's head in front of the little girl that tried to save his life just moments before. I'd say it's closer to "oblivious evil" energy.
It's kinda funny, the varying relationships that Nott and Caleb simultaneously have. Nott considering herself to be a sort of mother to Caleb, Caleb teaching Nott like a student, taking care of her like a daughter, and them both getting into shenanigans like siblings. Honestly, it's just really entertaining to watch the interplay.
as not a german, i can't fucking stand it. idk, they are incredible VAs, and i love every single voice they do, but Liam's accent this season is just driving me up the wall. i don't know why. it's honestly to the point where i'm considering dropping the show.
Im german and nobeing bothered by it, i think it sounds fine, heard better, heard worse What irritates me is that alot of places have german names thatarent pronounced how i would do it but its a fantasy world, so its fine, i mean how many games screw with english if theyre placed in 'ye olde timeth'.... Edit: disclaimer i wrote this before watching this episode, was talking about the ones before
Beauregard dodges two arrows, catches the third and chucks it into the chest of the gnoll in front of her, then proceeds to kick away its spear attack and dodge another attack after that. Monks are underrated.
That's all thematic from Matt. She only did one monk thing in all of that. Even what they were calling Patient Defense was just her taking her action to Dodge (Patient Defense let's you do this for 1 ki as a bonus action, but she did it as hee action). Only the Deflect Missles was monk.
@@Rowlurorowf I agree that it wouldn't be nearly as cool without Matt's DM mastery, but there's also the monk ability to catch an arrow and throw it back, and use ki points to do so much in one round.
@@spillitnow yeah, that's all I'm saying is that the Deflect Missiles was the only thing she spent the ki points on. Dont get me wrong, I agree monks can do some cool shit. Though I do hate that they have to also spend a bonus action on everything that also takes then ki to do... feels a little underpowered in comparison to other classes who just get their abilities without having to pay for them in any way
@@Rowlurorowf But that is what makes dnd awesome. If everyone just calls out their attack and no narrative is added to it, it gets boring really fast. I try to get my players to add som flavour to their attack descriptions, it really brightens up a gaming session.
"Do you think you're slowly turning into water?" *long pause and a sigh* "Nope... I hadn't considered that terrifying thought... but thanks, um I'll just add that to the fuckin' list." "If you feel like it's happening, let us know and we'll try to catch you in a jar." "In a jar?"
I love that Taliesin wore a D.A.R.E. shirt after the previous episode where they went to Natural Remedies and purchased several “experiences” worth of “substances”.
@@mitchellwilliam95 And? It’s still the fact that he’s wearing a drug education shirt the episode after they pretty much had a drug deal. Doesn’t matter if the system doesn’t work.
What a wholesome episode. Traveling, climbing trees, chatting about unicorns, eating donuts, contemplating committing highway robbery. You know. Normal things.
I want to give a shout out to the person/s who do the german subtitles. Translating Matt's "Alrighty" with "Alles klärchen" or "nope" with "nö" instead of just "nein" is absulutely perfect.
The minute Sam said "This is fine" while Nott was in the burning house I knew his character was gonna be an early favorite of mine, just like Scanlan was.
Just because someone is large or likes to work out, doesn't mean they lack personality or enthusiasm. A silly stereotype forced on those of us considered "Manly" by others.

Matt definitely loves doing an elaborate description for every action, but he really loves it when his players go for one. He tries to stay cool while DM'ing, but underneath he is basically a super invested fan boy of their characters. I noticed it in season 1 when Ashley's character got saved, literally one turn from an instakill death by brain-suck. His threatening DM vibe slipped off to reveal a pure "OH MY GOD GUYS I WAS SO SCARED!" vibe.

Man I love Laura's character in this campaign! And how she plays the character's mannerisms (and her accent lol), like when everyone was telling her Caleb can't hear in his familiar trance yet she keeps asking him things. Everybody really does well with their characters, but her joyful and inquisitive and naive child-like portrayal is making me wonder if I like her or Nott more. XD
Laura, Travis, and Sam are really great actors and I think DnD really let's this shine. So far their characters are the ones that truly feel fresh and new, whereas with the others there's definitely strong, strong echoes of Keyleth, Vax, and Percy. It's going to be fun watching these new characters develop over time.
Everyone’s talking about how amazing Caleb and Jester’s relationship is, but everyone ever notices Nott and Jester! Jester: gives Nott flower Nott: Why did you give me this flower Jester: because we’re friends! ITS SO CUTE!
Especially after the end of last episode where Nott gives flowers to Yasha and Jester asks where her flowers are. Nott says she didn't get Jester any flowers because she's not a threat. It shows how differently they see the world. Nott sees people as threats or not, Jester sees them as friends or not.
last campaign: Are glorious heroes that exemplify some of the noblest traits in humanity. this campaign: Thieving murder babies that can't seem to make a morally correct decision if it whacked them in the face.
They are still working out their whole schtick. They'll become noble heroes in time (I hope). Besides the group consists of a disguised goblin theif, a rogue monk, a pampered teifling cleric, a shady wizard, a waterlogged warlock, a loner Aasimar and a eccentric tiefling swordsman.
Dude did you watch Campaign 1? VM, tho I love them dearly, did all sort of morally ambiguous sometimes veering towards completely fucked decisions lol imo best way to describe both groups is a rag tag band of misfits/assholes who do good when they can and stir up trouble for typically personal motivations
@@barrettready1713 It's 20 years in the future, what makes you think they'd be dead? Percy and Vex are in their 40s, Pike is probably in her early 60s which isn't old for a Gnome and Scanlan is only about 90 and Keyleth will live for hundreds of years.
I’m sure it’s resolved by now and I’ll be disappointed in a few episodes, but I really hope that was on purpose and we discover the Fjord we know is a front he puts on while he comes to terms with his new Warlock identity.
@@KCBCollier I'm "up to date" in that I started watching with the Gen Con episode this year, but now am watching back from beginning of campaign 2. After I finish I'll watch campaign 1. I won't spoil for you, but you won't be disappointed.
Brian Collier Travis has confirmed that his change of accents in his dream was intentional. We still don’t know why yet but. Fjord’s Texan accent is not his real one.
Molly over here struggling against a single guy who he found lying on the ground after falling from a roof. Meanwhile Marishas character is holding off half the forces on her own.
Giving everyone disadvantage against you without giving up your attack action is very major, specially when they are gonna start wailing on you. I would even waste my normal action to do so! Sometime defensive is the best option.
The best part of campaign 2 is that Travis has been UNLEASHED. Too many times as Grog has Travis had a plan or solution but was unable to say anything. I’m so excited for him now!
That and he is squishy again. I like Marisha not having to do three things at once like before. Marisha doesn't have to be their moral compass, utility magic user, and DPS.
Was marisha really the moral compass though? I mean she's very erratic and she goes from one extreme to the other. And in terms of DPS I think Grog was the more consistent one, but she was definitely the utility magic user for sure.
Hit Kid She did have her moments of dealing butt tons of damage over wide areas with her Fire storm and Call Lightning’s, but yeah Grog was definitely Tank/DPS.
john cornwell you mean "try" to be the moral compass. I think playing the goody two shoes is not her strongest suit, and why bo(don't know how to spell it) fits her better.
I'd like to point out that Beauregard just whistled, crashed through a window, moved 40ft, dodged like 4 attacks and threw back an arrow, all within 6 seconds. Just another monday for monks.
I just realized how different this fights gonna be if Ashley wasn't so busy, like seriously a raging barbarian would've helped taking down some of the gnolls so much.
@@OutlawWalker Because they're friends and they don't want to push her out just because she took an undeniably better job opportunity in Blindspot. She's like an honorary member, in that sense.
I'm surprised and astounded every episode at the noises that come out of that man's mouth. Some of those don't seem like they should be possible for a human to make, but here we are.
Everyone else on the first round of combat against the gnolls: *Not being attacked at all* Beau on the first round: *Playing Expert difficulty on a broken Dance Dance Revolution game from the 90's while in the middle of a gang shootout*
charisma is more like... how socially adept you are. Things like how well you speak, how you hold peoples attention, are you believable. Nott is a great example of a character who is socially inept and also a goblin but is still heckin adorable.
@@9474sammus I was gonna say the same thing, lol! this campaign has a LOT of moments that transition from one room/building/town to another via absolute chaos, and I love it!
OK this is something that someone might've pointed out but anyone else notice Caleb's reaction to fire in general? Like Liam does such an incredible job at portraying Caleb's possible fear or trauma with fire. This is my first time watching so I have no clue if something did happen to Caleb in the past but I'm almost certain that it did! The first time he used Fire Bolt as well he mentioned a "sinking feeling" and Liam literally looked away from his palm as he shot the Fire Bolt. Then in this episode when Matt began to describe the flames as they approached the town you could instantly see Liam putting on a terrified expression without saying a single word. Just something amazing I noticed about Liam telling a bit of Caleb's story just through body language.
I love that I’ve tried to logic my way into having the party name make sense, and really it’s just a joke because they kept rolling nines during a fight with gnolls… 10/10 best name origin
When Marisha almost got hit by the arrow, and then used Deflect Missiles, the genuine excitement in Matt. As a DM, you should strive to give a nice challenge and of course have risk of death, so your party feels heroic, but you should be glad when they do awesome and survive, that adds to the stories you can tell of later. You don't want it to be easy, but you want the players to have just as much fun and you wanna be excited when they beat you, not sad or mad that you, as the DM is losing.
This is my first time watching C2, and I'm already in love with Widojest! Well, in truth, I've already seen some clips from the campaign and I'm aware of Widojest shippers, and although I know that Jester and Fjord will get together, I'm afraid I love Caleb and Jester more. But who knows, maybe that will change down the line.

Me: proceeds too roll 2 nat 20s and a 19 to save on drinking more wine
You can see her mention it to Sam as she gets up. Even the last episode you could tell she was hiding it with the top she had on. one of those that kinda flows out below the waist.
Out of everyone, I think Travis is the person I'd most want as a player. Everyone else is good, but I feel like Travis tries to get away with the least rule breaking and weird crap, and is the most involved/invested in the actual story.
**SLIGHT C1 SPOILERS** It's so refreshing, after all the "End-of-the-World Drama" of C1 with the Chroma Conclave and Vecna, to see a simple, classic "Oh no, these **insert enemies** have attacked and robbed our village! Please help us, brave adventurers!" :D
I wasn't paying a great deal of attention so I don't know if Matt described the Gnolls before making them "talk".. but as soon as he started yapping and snarling, I knew exactly what they were up against... He's damn good at making these creatures come to life.
A lot of comments talk about the characters but I'm here to admire the commitment of the DM to the beast sounds. When I heard him do the gnolls the first time I thought "man that must have felt cringy to do" and the 10th time was like, god damn those are some interesting and convincing creatures and I just got lost in the immersion. It's incredible that he made each sound have some kind of emotion or context communicated in it.
The image of Fjord floating in front of the giant yellow eye which is saying things like "Learn. Grow. Provoke. Consume." is what first grabbed my attention when I saw it (I think I was just looking up half-orc images and stumbled upon some fanarts of this scene). It just immediately got me hooked and I had to look up what it was from. So that's how I learned about Critical Role and now I'm on a 400 hour journey :)
I got pulled in by a cosplayer showing off their book holster based off of Caleb's. I thought the character would be from a book (it was a bookclub Facebook group) and searched him up... here I am and I'm hooked
I would love to see the scene with Beau coming out of the door, first 2 arrows missing, her catching the third, spin, and throw the arrow into the gnoll, but in animation.
Nott - "Oh well that's very nice of you." Normal - "Well, you said all girls like flowers. So I figured you did" Nott - "What did I do to deserve this?" Normal - "I don't know, you are my friend." coooome on. Normal is the best
Oh yeah. I forgot that part because I was too busy gouging my ears out because of her accent! I'm sorry, but it's really driving me nuts! You know it's Gru from Disposable Me?
Still very impressed that Sam was able to hide Laura’s pregnant belly as well as he did. Bonus; they didn’t even know if it worked until after the stream
The way Talesin smiles at anyone or anything that makes him laugh or smile or just generally amuses him makes me so happy. It’s genuine and wonderful with accents of sass, sarcasm and adoration. I love him very much

I noticed it in season 1 when Ashley's character got saved, literally one turn from an instakill death by brain-suck. His threatening DM vibe slipped off to reveal a pure "OH MY GOD GUYS I WAS SO SCARED!" vibe.
@@martinbowyer7906 I wouldn't really say it's underrated, especially at higher levels because of how good it is. An enemy takes 25 damage just on one hit if you cast it at level 5

Jester reminds of Merril from DA2 in a couple of ways.
She is my favorite!😍😍 Jester is the eternal child that I am in real life 😘😎😁😊😊
Her accent heavily reminds me of The quarians from mass effect 3
she is an absolute delight!
Everyone’s talking about how amazing Caleb and Jester’s relationship is, but everyone ever notices Nott and Jester!
Jester: gives Nott flower
Nott: Why did you give me this flower
Jester: because we’re friends!
ITS SO CUTE!
I FRIGGING LOVE NOTT!!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖
I love Nott and Jester together. They are my favourite duo
Yesss!!!!
Especially after the end of last episode where Nott gives flowers to Yasha and Jester asks where her flowers are. Nott says she didn't get Jester any flowers because she's not a threat. It shows how differently they see the world. Nott sees people as threats or not, Jester sees them as friends or not.
When Nott finally lifted the ring off her while she slept. Legend. Love these two.
last campaign: Are glorious heroes that exemplify some of the noblest traits in humanity.
this campaign: Thieving murder babies that can't seem to make a morally correct decision if it whacked them in the face.
VM, tho I love them dearly, did all sort of morally ambiguous sometimes veering towards completely fucked decisions lol
imo best way to describe both groups is a rag tag band of misfits/assholes who do good when they can and stir up trouble for typically personal motivations
@@abaddonarts1129 no bc most of them I think are dead at this point
@@AmunrA1991 "Waterlogged Warlock" oh my god, I LOVE THIS.
@@barrettready1713 It's 20 years in the future, what makes you think they'd be dead? Percy and Vex are in their 40s, Pike is probably in her early 60s which isn't old for a Gnome and Scanlan is only about 90 and Keyleth will live for hundreds of years.
They should establish some form of Morse Code tapping on Caleb's shoulder to communicate, since he can still feel and speak.
Thieves' cant has a limited symbol system they could use to "write" on his hand, and he'd respond.
I love it when people meta harder
I love that Matt's having people leave when someone has a personal experience this season. Makes it alot more tense.
I love how he incorporates level 3 "path" choices into the narrative. So much more interesting and not something I've ever done before.
And interesting that Fjord goes into a different accent in his dream.
Sometime defensive is the best option.
certified monk moment
Monks at low levels can be very good
Enemy boss getting sneak attacks from Celeb and Jester 😂❤
Nott when they climbed into the second floor of the burning house: "THIS IS FINE!"
I imagined that K.C. Green dog comic XD
I am convinced sam did that just for the meme lol

Matt: No, you leveled up so
Sam: Oh you're right! 10 points of damage!
Lauras reaction made me laugh so hard
10 months late but, timestamp?

Math is hard!!! 😆

Abel Sampaio just a veeeeery casual monday morning
As a DM I try to constantly make sure the players realize the relation between their actions and time. Shit gets pretty insane. It's epic.
Just another Monkday
well, 12 seconds (her action then the knolls) but awesome in the scheme of things none the less.
6 seconds, just one combat round.
I just realized how different this fights gonna be if Ashley wasn't so busy, like seriously a raging barbarian would've helped taking down some of the gnolls so much.

“It means you’re on a cart” *holds up the chariot* 🤣🤣🤣
It may have been two years ago but
*WHY IS MATT SO GOOD AT HYENA IMPRESSIONS?*
Not even that, he sells DEMONIC hyaena amazingly.
He's probably had to make similar monster noises in his voice acting career.
I am still figuring out how he made such a good Trinket impression.
Its Matt Mercer he might as well be a polymorphic demigod of voicing every creatrue and charcter in his campaigns and the monster manual
I'm surprised and astounded every episode at the noises that come out of that man's mouth. Some of those don't seem like they should be possible for a human to make, but here we are.
Everyone else on the first round of combat against the gnolls: *Not being attacked at all*
Beau on the first round: *Playing Expert difficulty on a broken Dance Dance Revolution game from the 90's while in the middle of a gang shootout*
Ong I totally didn’t place that they’re gnolls yet (halfway into the intro of them)
I love how excited Travis gets whenever Matt breaks out a new creature voice.
Nott reminding everyone that Caleb can't hear anyone when he's zoned out is like "At the tone, please record your message." XDD
Nott, on Caleb's shoulder: You've reached Caleb Widogast. Please leave a message after the beep. *feral goblin screeching*
It's honestly hard to believe that Nott has 5 charisma, she's so likable.
Or caleb 16 cha without taking baths.
I feel like it's such a low number because she is a goblin and how NPCs see her. I love Nott she's precious and we must protect!
Charisma determines confidence, not just likability.
charisma is more like... how socially adept you are. Things like how well you speak, how you hold peoples attention, are you believable.
Nott is a great example of a character who is socially inept and also a goblin but is still heckin adorable.
Yeah.
"I'm going to sit and sip this and grin and very silently have a mild nervous breakdown about what just went down." Relatable
I like the eddie Izzard quote right after that :)
2nd time through, just no realizing Travis changed his accent during his dream sequence...a very small but cool detail
Yeah, that had me going WTF.
Its hilarious to me that their journey out of town starts with them chasing down their own runaway cart lol
It's perfect for this party so far it's very funny
You were right
I noticed that too. Not just with the physical cues, I mainly listen and the audio cues are just on point!
He also said that nott got stuck on the top floor of a burning building and they had to use a octopus to break her fall
That’s the type of stuff Liam loves to do
Welp
“Thank you for that... TERRIFYING thought... I’ll just at that to the f****** list!”
“If you do we can try to catch you in a jar.”
I think you meant add
I love that I’ve tried to logic my way into having the party name make sense, and really it’s just a joke because they kept rolling nines during a fight with gnolls… 10/10 best name origin
Regular gnoll... Regular gnolls. ✊
"Tiny hamster unicorns." She has that character mastered.
I'm personally wondering how much of that is character how much is just Laura being Laura XD
What’s the time stamp on that plz?

Watching Sam cover Laura's pregnant belly when they have to get up from the table is so pure. Makes me smile, top tier friendship move.
I had to look back to even notice Laura's kinda hiding her tummy by turning her back to the camera when getting up.
Nice catch! You can see her ask him something and then he purposefully blocks her as she stands up!
You can see her mention it to Sam as she gets up. Even the last episode you could tell she was hiding it with the top she had on. one of those that kinda flows out below the waist.
And then you just point it out to the world

I love that Travis just looks like he throughly enjoys listening to Matt weave his story. It's great.
Out of everyone, I think Travis is the person I'd most want as a player. Everyone else is good, but I feel like Travis tries to get away with the least rule breaking and weird crap, and is the most involved/invested in the actual story.
He looked like how I feel when I'm listening to Matt spin the narrative
**SLIGHT C1 SPOILERS**
It's so refreshing, after all the "End-of-the-World Drama" of C1 with the Chroma Conclave and Vecna, to see a simple, classic "Oh no, these **insert enemies** have attacked and robbed our village! Please help us, brave adventurers!" :D
100% that’s why campaign 2 is great. I wish camping 3 started like this at low level as well.
I wasn't paying a great deal of attention so I don't know if Matt described the Gnolls before making them "talk".. but as soon as he started yapping and snarling, I knew exactly what they were up against... He's damn good at making these creatures come to life.
I knew exactly what they were even before Matt voiced them
A lot of comments talk about the characters but I'm here to admire the commitment of the DM to the beast sounds.

Grow. Provoke.
