- Epicyclic gearing or planetary gearing is a gear system consisting of one or more outer gears, or planet gears, revolving about a central, or sun gear. Typically, the planet gears are mounted on a movable arm or carrier, which itself may rotate relative to the sun gear.

They didn't have CGI so they had to go with practical effects and physical models. These 40s/50s/60s instructional videos are the best.
These ancient videos are still as relevant now as when they were made. The basic fundamentals haven’t changed, and usually they are very clear and easy to understand.

I think a reason why some poeple find this better than CGI is the Narration style added to the visual demo. The demo is laid out in a way to make everything easily visible. Where as in most CGI they make the mistake of taking apart the example, explaining the part, the cramming it back together in it's most compact form, with out show what each of the individual parts do.
Documentary tube has taught me more than CDX MLR (Maintenance and Light vehicle Repair) did. Thanks Doc.!

I tried watching three modern videos on planetary gears before this one but still didn’t understand. This was very clearly explained and practical.
This old video is much easier to understand than most modern vehicle driving descriptions.
I see a lot of comments that indicate a desire to understand. Let me try to boil it down. A planetary gear set has 3 parts: The central "sun" gear, the three small pinions (planets) mounted on a frame (a planet carrier), and a ring gear around the outside. That is a simplified set. The Sun, the planet carrier, and the ring gear, they all spin, at different speeds when the drive is turned on. The drive is the sun gear attached to an engine. Hydraulically controlled clutches and bands are used to control the three rotating groups. By "control" I mean a group can be "held" from the outside which makes it become stationary and act as a reaction surface (reactionary). Or it can be locked to the shaft by a clutch which makes it a driver, or it can be neither held nor locked which allows it to freewheel. If all clutches and bands are locked, the gear unit binds, and turns over as one bound up clump giving you direct drive, or as if you had no transmission at all. So the question is do I want to attach my wheels to the planet carrier and use its rotational speed, or to the ring gear, and use its rotational speed or do I want to bind all the gears and use that rotational speed.

Normad Straight to the point on the fundamental principles of planetary gear systems. There's no "fluff" here.
It is probably because they are stripping it down (the transmission) and adding the more complicated layers later on. It could also be that the videos gave more informations thanks to better attention spans back then.

People making digital animations of mechanisms really have to watch a lot of these old model demonstrations. I always find them much clearer to understand because they show just the simplest elements without all the bells and whistles, but they also usually show the whole thing without leaving out critical components (because an actual model can't work without them).
In all the animations I've seen, they never showed what the ring gear actually connects to. (Or mention that it connects to anything.)

Did you actually watch the video and try to understand it? Or are you one of those "They don't make them like they used to" types.
This video is unclear and the cuts to the young soldier show no detail and barely correspond to what is being said. Cuts to the tank are useless. And the ratios are intuitive with prehistoric math.
This video helps to confirm bias. It's only value is the 5 rules and they only make sense after one understands why. As presented they cannot be used to predict motion.
Old quality videos exist, just like new quality videos. This is neither.

very consise and instructional :) I can see how a possible CVT can be made for a hobby vehicle as I gained understanding how planetaries work. Some of these govt motor pool movies are still of great use!
before I saw this, I was puzzling over a small project vehicle. now I can visualize the principles making it possible for me put it "the hell" to use :-)
I love how they cut to some B-roll of a truck backing up when the narrator is describing vehicles moving in reverse. I might never have understood without that illustration!

In the case of two inputs, the last one shown, what happens if the sun and ring gear are rotating in the same direction but the sun gear exceeds the constant speed of the ring gear? I am of the opinion that the planet carrier still remains in between the ring and sun gear and still rotates in the same direction. Am I wrong in my assumption?
Also, in the compound planetary gear setup he said that the planet carriers of the intermediary and reverse sets were connected via the output shaft, I am trying to understand why that is necessary since the planet carrier of the reverse is reacting to its own sun (rotating cw from the intermediary ring) and its own stationary ring gear. Can someone please elaborate?

Need ur help urgently..
I have material Lifting Machine of load capacity 300 kg , which is placed at 15th floor. And connected via single phase 3hp motor and rubber with wire rope drum. It only works for uplifting the material. But I want it as work for both uplifting as well as downlifting the material. Which gearbox I would buy and in which ratio so that I could get speed of the machine maximum 35 - 50 mtr/min for uplifting and downlifting the material.
Or any alternate available.

Is it common for the ring gear to be on a bearing ? Seems like a very expensive bearing and lots of wasted energy by friction when it's in that mode

I never could understand gearing from watching youtube videos. I try so hard, too.
Only for planetary gears, this is normal. It's not that intuitive to have an inward gear...

Yes, both the Toyota HSD and Chevrolet Volt utilize planetary gearsets.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think all automatic transmitions use planetary gear sets
Brendan Kelly not quite. Honda and Saturn has some that are quite similar to a manual transaxle but utilize clutch discs instead of synchros to change ratios. Also there are newer style cvt and such that do not use planetaries. But most still do lol

yep, if u do reduction u convert the speed to torque and if u do the reverse u get more speed but less torque ;d

you are 100% correct. If you crunch the numbers, the output power will always be slightly less because there is friction between the moving parts, but the rule is true.
what if the input is given to planet carrier and there is no reactionary???

It worked for tanks in those day's, and can't break down, so that's the reason Toyota uses it on every Hybrid car today.

Labels are always good.
Still a bit hard to grasp, but this one is the clearest on explaining how this works. Just wish they had changed the mono audio, because my right ear hurts like hell.

Second time i watched it.. still don't get it :-) Need some CGI and better (newer terminology I guess...) It does not explain the clutch system... and the gears are too complex to easily understand... or it might be that I'm just too stupid to understand... and the later might be the one to bet on...

A perfect example of how language itself makes understanding convoluted ideas extremely difficult. A simple cartoon with arrows would be easier to follow.

Naah i still don't get it...
The outer ring is fixed in place, and has a lot of teeth. The sun gear is in the center of the ring gear, and has only a few teeth, since it's a lot smaller and the teeth must be the same size. The planet gears (usually 3 to balance the loading around the sun gear) have the same sized teeth around a gear circle exactly the distance from the sun circle to the ring circle. As the sun gear rotates once, it's teeth make the planetary gear turn the same number of teeth, and since the planetary is connected to the ring gear as well, it travels around the ring the same number of teeth. For example, If there are 20 teeth on the sun, and 100 on the ring, that means the planetary only goes around 1/5 (20/100) of the ring as the sun gear goes around once. That's your gear ratio: for every one turn of the sun, you get 1/5 turn of the planetary around the ring or it takes 5 turn of the sun to go once around the ring, or 5:1 reduction ratio. The planet gears are held in a carrier frame, and there is a shaft connected to that frame that can drive a pulley, gear, wheel, or another set of planetaries, to reduce the speed (and increase to torque output) again.
The sun gear is usually the input (like the drive axle in a car), the ring gear is the anchor surface (like the road) and the planetaries are like the wheels that carry the car along.

Good thing there are a few types out there, the NuVinci from Fallbrook Technology (ball type, 2 models), Sturmey Archer, Shimano Alfine (3 versions), and Rohloff Speedhub (two widths and a number of different set-ups of operation) for hubs or mid drives (special applications per type of bike frame). Then there is Schlumpf with two mountain and one road or speed gearing and also Pinion which makes 4 models (18, 12 andd two variations of the 9 speed) of pinion type planetary gearbox (crank) set.
Not counting the others still in prototype or testing.
