I have never before heard this topic discussed. Thank you Matt and Fr. Pine. Let me tell you, this is a huge relief. I don't actually participate in most of the devotions people try to press on me, but I end up feeling pointlessly guilty and looked down upon. I think your discussion here will free me from that. There are three devotions which I know can settle me and make me attentive to the Lord's presence. From now on, I intend to do those more consistently. Again, thank you.

This helped me as a convert. When I initially came in, I wanted every single novena for every saint, I wanted as many different devotions as I could get. It was wearing me out though and I wasn’t feeling connected with any. We pretty much stick to the Rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet. The saints I include in all my prayers to try to cultivate a sense of friendship with are BVM, St. Joseph, St. Paul, St. Padre Pio, and St. Michael. Anyway, once I realized simplifying things and that sometimes “less is more,” it made things better.

Personally, I make sure to pray the Breviary (Liturgy of the Hours) daily. Although very common it is very unheard of for some reason however, I highly recommend it aside from the Holy Rosary. God bless!🙏💖

There have been times when I am in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and I have been so distraught that I could not pray the rosary or could not read the Bible. My priest told me that when that happens, my tears ARE my prayer. Sometimes I want to meet with God on my terms, but that's not how it works!

That part about not being able to do everything, but only the one thing you are supposed to do reminded me of something C.S. Lewis said about people growing more different from each other the closer to God they are. God's plans for every individual are so different from each other, it doesn't matter what others are called to, what matters is how you pick up your cross.

I found out quickly after converting that I had to pick, but I think God shows us some that are suitable. Mine are divine mercy because I need it, and I wear a brown scapular and a miraculous medal. I also did the first Fridays once but I feel the sacred heart and divine mercy are basically two sides of the same coin, so I went with divine mercy.

My favorite devotions are to the Sacred Heart and the Divine Mercy (did you know there's a pretty fierce rivalry between some proponents of these devotions?!?). I'm very glad you addressed this topic. I have family members who insist that to be a proper Catholic, I must attempt to practice every devotion out there, and I have felt very overwhelmed. The same people insist I practice various devotions that are directly linked to indulgences... and my thinking is, good prayer is good prayer full stop- and I'd rather accidentally gather these indulgences, rather than tick them off a list.

The only requirements (from a Latin perspective):
    1. Go to Sunday/Holy Day of Obligation Mass
    2. Engage in the sacraments
    3. Read the bible with some regularity
Everything else should be done to taste. I'm personally a Divine Office and Rosary everyday person in addition to the requirements.

I would love a more detailed discussion with examples of how the goal of the text is mediation, goal of meditation is prayer, goal of prayer contemplation etc. I have re listened to this many times and would appreciate having it explained again. I found this so helpful! The explanation on the different devotions according to ones disposition so reassuring.. truely one of the best videos I’ve watched abs I watch daily! I learnt so much about sacraments, graces, saints, indulgence, devotions. All the things you think about when you are intentionally trying to grow in faith. Thank you . I also love the comment’ about allowing diversity not expecting conformity. Such an encouraging show. Fr has a great gift of making the faith known and loved. Thank you both!!

My depressive days ceased when me and my grandmother began the rosary 3 months after quarantine began.
My secular readings became more consistent, I got more empowerment for working out, my conscience found its voice so much so that sometimes I'm mysteriously compelled to open a certain place in the Bible, and I do exercise Á Kempis' words now in isolation.
Behin with one and it will make all the difference.

I recently used to be this way with devotions / saints, but now I'm working on weaning it down with overly listening to catholic talks or lectures. They are all great but I stick to a few I listen to regularly (like Matt Fradd) for example. I also have like 2 priests whose homilies I'll listen to weekly. The "other" talks and homilies or lectures outside of the core group I listen to are still good and I will still listen to at some point, but I do feel the need to obsess over making sure I cram all them in and watch them ASAP because I feel that there is something I need to know write now lurking in one of those videos that will be this breakthrough thing for me.

I'm a new convert. Ar first, i was really averse to the Rosary for two reasons: 1) Everyone does it. 2) I wasn't quite comfortable with prayers to Mary out numbering all the other prayers.
Now, I love the Rosary! I've decised that I'll stick with the Rosary and go to adoration and let that be enough for now.

Great video! I have a question though. When it comes to praying the Rosary, our Lady told us to do it in all/many of her apparitions. Isn't it the case that all faithful Catholics should be praying the Rosary everyday and not just an option?

    • @IpCrackle
      @IpCrackle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's why I'm a bit curious and concern. Also because this is a recommendation to all faithful (generic) and a means to fight today's evil.

    • @johncolumba7945
      @johncolumba7945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Eucharistic Adoration is really a public devotion, so aside from that, among (private) devotions the Rosary has objective pride of place. There has not been a canonised Catholic Saint that I'm aware of, since the Rosary has become universalised, that has not prayed it. The enduring "hype" from the faithful concerning it is unparalleled, plus the the approved apparitions etc. Still, the Church does not bind one in the domain of private prayer. It remains a freedom proper to all the Christian faithful. The Church only legislates for Public Worship. Still, the word "should" can be said regarding the praying of the Rosary, however, one ought to understand clearly what the nature of this "should" is - i.e. a "should" of serious recommendation based on x, y, z, within the Church's life and experience, and the testimony of Her Saints; not based on what is mandated by the Church and is morally binding. Hence fervour in encouraging others to pray the Rosary should be tempered by discretion and Wisdom.
Objectively the Rosary is up there. It is universally encouraged and not praying it will objectively be less beneficial than not. But subjectively someone COULD be doing just as well in the spiritual life without it. (Note: "COULD," it is possible). But if despite knowing its value one resists praying the Rosary for unreasonable reasons, in such a case it could serve as an act of resistance to the prompting of the Spirit, and thus grace itself. Hence in such a context not praying the Rosary could hinder one's spiritual life. In brief: I recommend all to pray the Rosary. But I do not judge Catholics who don't, and don't pressure them. I encourage, elicit, explain, and pray that they might.

This is my hot take, bear with me: it's not so much that you choose a devotion or a number of them, much as THEY choose you for a reason. When in doubt, keep it as simple as you can. The LOTH is a no-brainer. After that, be attentive to what the Holy Spirit may hint at you.

Great chat. / Even though the clip didn't discuss it, I only want to mention about Our Lady and St. Joseph because of possible misunderstanding. Devotion to both is objectively universal. By virtue of the Order of the Hypostatic Union, consisting of Mary and Joseph in union with Jesus, devotion to Mary and Joseph is intrinsic to Christian devotion. There are many ways such devotion/s can take form (many!). The actual devotion to these Saints is unique among other Saints. Our Lady first, to whom hyperdulia is due; and St. Joseph, the Universal Patron of the Church, second, to whom proto-dulia (first-veneration) is due. Dulia is proper to the other Saints. That's why one can stress the universality of devotion to Mary and Joseph as central to Catholic spirituality - it's for everyone, and everyone objectively should have such devotion. However, one ought to respect subjectivity, "seasons" in people's lives, where each person is at - some aren't ready or disposed to Marian, nevermind Josephine devotion.
This is where wisdom is needed. Jesus doesn't force people to take-in His Mother, nor to befriend His Virginal Appointed Father, Joseph. He wants us to know them desperately. But Christ's meek and gentle approach is a guide to us too.

Yes there are too many devotions, not only too many, but too many needless ones. Christ Jesus is all we need, all that matters, the rest is nothing but noise. Matthew 27:51 [51] And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. This is why Jesus says; John 14:13-14 [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 15:7-9 [7] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. [8] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. [9] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 16:23-24 [23] In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. [24] Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Dear Fr. Gregory Pine, I love listening to your wisdom, but I think your analogy with praying the Rosary was poorly thought out because praying the Rosary is known to be rather helpful in avoiding the sort of mistake you have used in your analogy.
I have heard people say that praying the Rosary helps them get better organised.
I have personally noticed that since I began praying the Rosary daily and most often on the Train, that I have never missed my train stop.
It’s unbelievable. I miss my stop when reading an interesting story on Metro newspaper or a book, but I never miss my stop even when I’ve my eyes closed and completely lost in the Holy Rosary.

I doubt anyone will read this but, just gotta say. He didn't mention not even one scripture (from God's Word), in his talk about devotions. I am a Protestant and it is so strange to me to see a Christian not use scripture almost exclusively. And that just seems to be universal Catholic practice. As a follower of Jesus Christ I could never subscribe to a religion that so roundly ignores God's Word.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God...
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
    John 1:1‭-‬2‭, ‬4‭-‬5
It's the Word, the Word, the Word. And not human reason.

At 5:14, he says Scripture is a "good, holy, sanctifying, privileged" devotion.
God's Word/Revelation is not only found in the Bible - there is the unwritten or spoken Word, also known as Sacred Tradition. Sacred Tradition - which came from God - existed even BEFORE Sacred Scripture did.
That's the reason Catholics don't exclusively use Scripture. We acknowledge other sources of God's Revelation. We do not ignore God's Word - not in the slightest. If you're able, go to a Catholic Mass - during the week, or on Sunday - and you will hear lots of Scripture. Just make sure you don't receive the Eucharist, which is literally the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ - you must be Catholic, and in a state of grace in order to receive Him in the Eucharist.
EDIT: or if you can't make it to Mass, there are plenty of Masses you can view online. Here's one: th-cam.com/video/k7kXfAMlETI/w-d-xo.html

Give the Church a break. Are there more not worthless shows on Netflix and other places than devotions on the Church? Does the devil not have many more ways to tempt and to destroy souls than the Church has devotions?
And what harm are those brothers and sisters doing to you by recommending a particular devotion which they practice? Why do you become uncomfortable and upset? Does not Satan insists even harder in making you sin in order to drag you into the fires of Hell? Why are you so ungrateful to those who offer you something good?
Be grateful them to God that your brothers and sisters try to make you practice a devotion to help you come closer to God and save your souls, despite your ingratitude towards them and towards God.

Intercessory prayers are instructed by St. Paul in 1 TIMOTHY 2:1. What does EPHESIANS 6:18 says? MAKING SUPPLICATION FOR ALL THE SAINTS ! Mary is not just a saint, she is the Ark of the New Covenant, The NT Gebirah, Daughter of Zion and the woman of revelation that is why we pray for her protection and intercession.
SUPPLICATION (DEFINITION) - The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly.
EPHESIANS 6:18 Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
LUKE 1:28 HAIL FULL OF GRACE
ROMANS 16:6 Salute Mary, who hath laboured much among you.
Saints and angels in heaven interceding for us in REVELATION 4, 5, 6, 8.
"Mediator" is Christ alone in one sense. As intercessors all members are " mediators". according to Catholicism and Scripture:
1- The Church is the body of Christ
2- There is only one body of Christ, not one on earth and another one in heaven.
3- Death does not separate the members of the body.
4- Christians are bound by the Law of Christ to love and pray for one another.
