I've played the game since s2, and don't get me wrong I love the game but when people ask me how I've played it for so long, it's because I never play ranked, I spam drafts and try new builds or just any champ or role I'm feeling. Exploring the Champs and all their interactions is where the beauty is for me. However the thing that constantly annoys me about the current state of the game is just the insane amount of cc. What happened to long tactical fights, now every team fight feels like getting chain cc'd for 10 seconds and waiting to die or you're the one chaining cc.
Underrated comment, everyone complains about oneshot damage or constant healing, but League has mostly a CC issue, either tenacity needs to be buffed or more cleanse options.
I'm pretty much the same as you. I mostly play ARAM because I enjoy a playstyle of doing the best with what you've got instead of being a metaslave, and only play SR to try out weird and interesting builds and interactions that don't usually last more than a patch. This is why I'm skeptical of the game's future, because I can see that what their take on 'fun > fair' amounts to insulting the average player's intelligence and pushing for a fast, simplified gameplay loop where 'popular' champs (the ones able to amass a solid playerbase via being playable if not OP for years coughassassins/skirmisherscough) reign free and instead of buffing other playstyles they'll aim to slowly make all other champs play in a similar way. You can see this in how they're pushing mages and even now ADCs to build full burst, refusing to nerf lethality while also refusing to buff crit in any way that matters. Riot's idea of the 'average player's definition of fun' is skewed by the playerbase that they themselves built through years of pandering exclusively to pro play and will only reinforce toxic balancing while they keep on removing tactical and teamplay elements from the game.

I have climbed with many C Tier champs over the years, and reached High Plat and low diamong consistently, even while having fun and playing absurd shit like Akali sup and Rakan top when they were far from being useful there, still I held around %50 WR with these shot over 15-20 games. So, no. Just cause 'meta' exists, doesn't mean it matters much for average players. If a silver 4 abuses meta, at most he will be inflated to silver 2. That's it. Low elo is still low elo Edit: and you can absolutely have fun playing Ranked. So many people focus on LP and their rank too much rather than enjoying the game for what it is. Who cares if your plat,dia or masters? It is just a freaking game. But I like playing a game where everyone troes their best and showcases theor skills. Winning such games is more fun. Losing such games is also more fun. Grinding normals, doesn't give me any fun, even if I play random shit. Having yourself,your enemy and your entire teammates to play around and makes things work woth limited power(as you can't win alone) yet still trying to make things work is way more fun amd enjoyable.
@@fy4072 what does rank have to do with anything? Every player has a peak and there's one tricks of every single champ in high elo pretty much in all servers. Meta exists, it shapes the game just the same in every elo. Just cause it doesn't necessarily affect your winrate doesn't mean it doesn't affect the average experience. I play exclusively for fun that's why I hate oneshot meta, cause I'd rather two or more people have fun fighting and outplaying each other rather than one instadeleting the other before they can react. Honestly, feels like Riot wants to turn the game more and more into a fighting game by removing strategic elements and role specialization, except they forgot the part where there's actual fights lasting longer than .5 secs. They got close to fixing it I think for one or two patches after durability, but they've clearly gone in the opposite direction since.
We cannot possibly compare Riot to Blizzard when it comes to effort put into their games. Wild Rift does things that are only possible on mobile, DI was a disgrace

You'll always have broken champs in patches but it's not as severe as before. As someone who left last season cuz of how shit it was, this season is looking much better.
What made me like the direction League is taking is by giving attention to other champions and let people be inventive, buffing champions to other roles instead of punishing players for creating new metas. But its a low crawl towards that direction because they still punish for those things, just not as hard as last year.

I call Plat-Emerald-Diamond intermediate/mid elo because there are big differences between those ranks and low/high elo and I feel like it's worth noting the distinction. also because that's where I am rn and I don't want to be called low (it hurts my feelings) but I also know I'm not high elo :)

After 7 years of playing League, I finally quitted two months ago, just when the game finally allows us to have fun. Even if the tentation is high, I wont return before a long time because 1. I've never been happier than now in my life without League (I'm not even the type to be toxic or play ranked) and 2. Vanguard
Well the current patch is the last in theory without Vanguard. This is the enjoy while it lasts part. After that we will never see each other again. Tbh it is probably for the best.
This season has been relatively good, but let’s not kid ourselves, *the game has always been on an overall decline.* Those tweets are not a good sign. It sounds like they have struggled and now are slowly giving up on skill balance. The appeal of the game has always been that it’s easy to pick-up, but rewards an awareness and understanding of the deeper gameplay elements. Spicing things up is fine, but steering the game into a more casual environment will actually ruin the game’s identity and kill it.
Just had a massive layoff, just killed all of the lore (again), trying to push vanguard, killed forge, no more prime rp, runeterra is dead. Getting into league now is just going to be watching your new favorite game hang itself over the next 5 years.
I agree, i havent played seriously or consistently since s10, but completely dropped the game only in s13 have been clean of league for 5~ month now, but recently my friend asked me to fill in Aram clash, and i played it, and it was very fun. I believe as a party of 5 experience, league currently is a good game, fun and exciting, looking forward to playing it with my friends more, NOT SOLO

In regards to the layoffs I would like to comment that it was a delayed response from the mass over hiring that every tech company did back during covid when everyone was working from home. Riot just managed to hold onto their extra employees much longer then most other tech companies. These layoffs were gonna happen at some point, it was just a question of when. Also Legends of Runeterra wasn't discontinued. It was just downsized because frankly the game loses Riot a ton of money just by existing. They really shot themselves in the foot with how f2p friendly that game really is lol.

They really nailed the f2p friendly model but that lead to the game being in the red almost always and they're only going to be able to keep investors and tencent happy for so long with it being in the red. They want to keep it alive for Lore purposes though which is why I think they're focusing on the singleplayer pve aspects of it.

I think it has about the same strength as the old Riftmaker bruiser build, it's for games where being alive and dealing some damage is more important than dealing a ton of damage and getting one-shot at the start of the fight It should be good for dealing with diver-heavy teams when you don't have much peel to play around, but I haven't played it myself
League being more casual is a good thing for me, I hate playing ranked in any game, mostly since the negativity of others or the frustration of being paired with people better than you or people with a mindset of taking the match so serious to the point they insult you for trying to be casual just ruins my day. That´s why I´ve been transitioning to Helldivers 2, it genuinely gave me back that sense of having mindless caotic fun while also giving me the feeling of supporting my team and doing my part with the supportive builds the game offers.

Nothing wrong with that, but these supposed changes League of Legends are not even out yet which makes it is hard for me to believe a video that claims this is the best time to play, and doubles down by saying "(unironically)". I also dont think the 2 minutes spent explaining different games added any insight on the future of league, especially since neither of those games are league 💀. I think the conversation about runaans on melees and the PBE is exciting though, just not necessarily "the best time to play league", you know.
I don't know when you started playing, but this title feels very dishonest. When I started playing, around 10 years ago, the game was full of personality and character. New champ releases/reworks were highly anticipated and very well-teased, (JHIN, EKKO, AZIR, GP REWORK). Some of these champs even had GAME MODES made specifically for their releases. Game modes were fun and much more common, we were getting winter maps without question, and skins were just better, had more personality, and people would complain about league as being a toxic game, but you would RARELY hear people exaggerate the way they do now, and complain about league "not being fun to them". Because what would they say wasn't fun about the Dark Star Thresh game mode where you're q'ing people across the map, or Doom Bots which can ramp in difficulty? Most of the points you're making are relating to gameplay, and the average league ranked/draft game, which I understand, because that's the core of the game. But there's so much outside of that that players just don't know about, and it looks like people are forgetting. This might be one of the best times to play League of Legends in recent years, but definitely nowhere close to what it was at its previous peaks. Thanks for putting out original, unique thinkpieces like this though! It's rarer to hear dissenting opinions on this game day to day, and to come out and say you like the direction the game is going might have even been stressful for you. Every 3 game in E1/D4 a person ruins the game for the team (enemy/own team). It is really frustrating and Riot seem to do nothing about inting behavior.

My only issue with the game right now is matchmaking. It's ridiculous. The skill disparity is crazy. I end up queueing against people 2-3, sometimes 4 ranks higher than me.
Matchmaking for any game like this won't be great, but at least they're taking steps to fix it in ranked with MMR tweaks and stuff. In my experience it's at least passable when you're either below or above the elo hell that is Emerald
i think leagues biggest problem is match making and its snowbally nature. 90% of games are stomp or get stomped. u barely get comebacks and committing a single mistake in the early just fucks u over so hard that the next 10-15 mins are extremely unfun to play. a lot of interactions are also unfun af to play. e.g. u play as a melee against ranged top. take second wind + d shield. ur opponent attacks u, takes minion aggro, u run away and get an equal trade. but its boring as hell to get shoved in without any interaction until u hit lvl 6 or 3 depending on champ then all in them, kill them and wait for ur key abilities/summoner spells to come back off cooldown. like its not good or fun gameplay. way too many resident sleeper match ups. game duration is way too short. too much dmg creep. team fights last seconds, while they should last 1-2 minutes like they used to. also when i play as a d3 normal games with 4 bronze/silver/gold friends enemy team gets 3 masters and 2 dia players and im like wtf. my low elo friends dont want to play with me anymore because of that. i create a smurf. instant smurf queue. even in god dayum normals. like cant they just gimme 1 dia player in the enemy team so its balanced and my silver mates dont get obliterated by a 2million mastery points kata otp whos master/gm elo and sweating in a normal. adding stuff like runaans wont change any of these facts. if they want to make it more casual friendly remove snowball mechanics and increase game durations. give people a free tp back to lane when they die. they need to implement stuff like that. so even if u get steam rolled by a better play u still can have some fun and are not behind 2k+ gold and 2lvls after 8minutes into the game.
I play a handful of ranked games and get actual bots in my game. I am mid to high gold, and these bots have a hundred wins in intro AI bot games, and their first few ranked games are in plat and gold MMR. I look at these "bot" players accounts a few days later, and they are in iron 4. I have a list of like 6 and i have no idea how to report them because riot requires you have been in a game with them.

League is good right now if you don't give too shits about your identity money or privacy. before you install the game. know that Riot games will monitor everything you do 24/7 as long as you have the game installed on your PC it is the ultimate spyware now. and all your info can be used at any point if they feel like it. also! if they get hacked the hackers can use Riot to hack and get all your information not only limited to your credit card but also your passport etc. so if you are prepared to risk all of that to play a stupid video game by all means go ahead. but don't tell me I didn't warn ya. PS: Riot got hacked last year and the hackers said it was embarrassing how little protection they had.
My current experience: game is alright if I play after dinner, but any other time the matchmaking is f'ed. If I play in the afternoon I'll get 3 matches in a row where I was winning or tying lane, but an AP assasin in a different role is on 15 kills somehow and we FF. Like one match yesterday I had a TF jungle that ALWAYS went for all-ins against 1 or multiple people in the early game. Entire team was wondering what blud was doing.

Agreed on that completely, pinging allies' ultimates and summoner spells is part of playing correctly. Riot should either restore those pings or just add voice chat already

Personally I never complained about the game and only about allies. Also you can play whatever you want. This is proven by people reaching a higher rank than most complainers with random off meta builds.
League is fun when you win, the only thing is dislike about playing nowadays is the toxic community, but I think the dev did a great job listening to community this year.
I feel i have a completely different opinion on this, i agree with a lot of what you said but over all this season has quite literally been the worst state the games been in ( maybe the second worst ) but truly frustrating the balancing issues are a complete nightmare 10x more than any other season and draft feels like a complete waste of time ( you instantly win/lose in champ select ) no matter how good you play as adc ( any other role will always stomp you even when behind ) then support being the easiest role in the game yet not the most impactful role in the game it's terrible having a support maokai in your lane 24/7 or a ridiculous range senna, etc , etc yet the balance changes every patch are so minimal and tend to consistently miss ( talking about 5 maokai nerfs for 5 different patches ) only lowering his win rate by 1% ( thats fuckin crazy and the balance team should be fired for that legit definition of incompetent ) i'd personally advise people to try your best to play other mobas and try helping those communities over leagues as they haven't cared for awhile
The new player experience is still horrendous. They should take an example from Wild Rift where new players are guided through an extensive series of tutorials and matches against bots before they can play against people, this mandatory process also discourages people from making smurf accounts.
The game was trash for the longest time and we all still played it to get that old league fix.. eventually some like me quit for awhile. U check here and then. After mythics removes, ur excited. I would take fair over fun anyday been playing tekken 8 recently and that game has fun characters but when u start to play ranked u start to see the fun stuff is annoying or basically has no counterplay

No one will agree with this take cuz its fun to simply hate on league, no reason needed, but I say I had never ever had so much fun playing league tbh, its all mad scientist bs right now, the game is so open to fun now, that yea some champs are bs and will be bs until some change in their kit but most can be played in 2-3 different playstyles which is mad, I had 3 games against briar lately where I got to play against ap, ad and bruiser briar. Right now I think league is just all about: go on try that build and runes on that random champ, and if it works it will be good for ranked'' its like pleasing both worlds in league, the competitive and casuals have something to play with. What made me like the direction League is taking is by giving attention to other champions and let people be inventive, buffing champions to other roles instead of punishing players for creating new metas. But its a low crawl towards that direction because they still punish for those things, just not as hard as last year.

It's going pretty well ngl it was a bit easier than I expected, I still get the urge to play especially when I watch gameplay but I always remember how frustrating and not worth it the game is most of the time. If I'm really craving it I play Drututts illaoi video. That kills my desire every time.

It's a bit of sarcasm lol, diamond 3 is around top 2% of the playerbase, it's not "low" by any means, it's just anything below GM is considered "low elo" in a lot of online discussion

After 7 years of playing League, I finally quitted two months ago, just when the game finally allows us to have fun. Even if the tentation is high, I wont return before a long time because 1. I've never been happier than now in my life without League (I'm not even the type to be toxic or play ranked) and 2. Vanguard

This season has been relatively good, but let’s not kid ourselves, *the game has always been on an overall decline.* Those tweets are not a good sign. It sounds like they have struggled and now are slowly giving up on skill balance. The appeal of the game has always been that it’s easy to pick-up, but rewards an awareness and understanding of the deeper gameplay elements. Spicing things up is fine, but steering the game into a more casual environment will actually ruin the game’s identity and kill it.

Just had a massive layoff, just killed all of the lore (again), trying to push vanguard, killed forge, no more prime rp, runeterra is dead. Getting into league now is just going to be watching your new favorite game hang itself over the next 5 years.

I agree, i havent played seriously or consistently since s10, but completely dropped the game only in s13 have been clean of league for 5~ month now, but recently my friend asked me to fill in Aram clash, and i played it, and it was very fun. I believe as a party of 5 experience, league currently is a good game, fun and exciting, looking forward to playing it with my friends more, NOT SOLO
my reaction after watching 6 and a half minutes is this sounds like an ad, but i agree, League is a bad ass game, and I think that explains the popularity you describe in Brazil, because Dota and Hots are so much more cartoonish and also low-key with the action. I think League is pretty goddamn action packed, and as long as they dont flood it with more cringey champs like smolder, the bad ass vibe will only grow stronger. Hell, the new black grandma samurai sounded pretty sick even. Also this video was pretty random but I guess I appreciate the support

In regards to the layoffs I would like to comment that it was a delayed response from the mass over hiring that every tech company did back during covid when everyone was working from home. Riot just managed to hold onto their extra employees much longer then most other tech companies. These layoffs were gonna happen at some point, it was just a question of when.
Also Legends of Runeterra wasn't discontinued. It was just downsized because frankly the game loses Riot a ton of money just by existing. They really shot themselves in the foot with how f2p friendly that game really is lol.
Good to know about the LoR downsizing, I was surprised mostly because I didn't think it was doing that poorly, glad to see that they aren't abandoning it at least

They really nailed the f2p friendly model but that lead to the game being in the red almost always and they're only going to be able to keep investors and tencent happy for so long with it being in the red. They want to keep it alive for Lore purposes though which is why I think they're focusing on the singleplayer pve aspects of it.

I think it has about the same strength as the old Riftmaker bruiser build, it's for games where being alive and dealing some damage is more important than dealing a ton of damage and getting one-shot at the start of the fight
It should be good for dealing with diver-heavy teams when you don't have much peel to play around, but I haven't played it myself
League being more casual is a good thing for me, I hate playing ranked in any game, mostly since the negativity of others or the frustration of being paired with people better than you or people with a mindset of taking the match so serious to the point they insult you for trying to be casual just ruins my day.
That´s why I´ve been transitioning to Helldivers 2, it genuinely gave me back that sense of having mindless caotic fun while also giving me the feeling of supporting my team and doing my part with the supportive builds the game offers.

I'm really disappointed in League... Decided to have some fun with friends on URF and guess what. As all of us were Silver we were getting matched against Emerald. Such a good matchmaking system.

Nothing wrong with that, but these supposed changes League of Legends are not even out yet which makes it is hard for me to believe a video that claims this is the best time to play, and doubles down by saying "(unironically)". I also dont think the 2 minutes spent explaining different games added any insight on the future of league, especially since neither of those games are league 💀. I think the conversation about runaans on melees and the PBE is exciting though, just not necessarily "the best time to play league", you know.

I don't know when you started playing, but this title feels very dishonest. When I started playing, around 10 years ago, the game was full of personality and character. New champ releases/reworks were highly anticipated and very well-teased, (JHIN, EKKO, AZIR, GP REWORK). Some of these champs even had GAME MODES made specifically for their releases. Game modes were fun and much more common, we were getting winter maps without question, and skins were just better, had more personality, and people would complain about league as being a toxic game, but you would RARELY hear people exaggerate the way they do now, and complain about league "not being fun to them". Because what would they say wasn't fun about the Dark Star Thresh game mode where you're q'ing people across the map, or Doom Bots which can ramp in difficulty?
Most of the points you're making are relating to gameplay, and the average league ranked/draft game, which I understand, because that's the core of the game. But there's so much outside of that that players just don't know about, and it looks like people are forgetting. This might be one of the best times to play League of Legends in recent years, but definitely nowhere close to what it was at its previous peaks.
Thanks for putting out original, unique thinkpieces like this though! It's rarer to hear dissenting opinions on this game day to day, and to come out and say you like the direction the game is going might have even been stressful for you. Keep up the good work :)

Every 3 game in E1/D4 a person ruins the game for the team (enemy/own team). It is really frustrating and Riot seem to do nothing about inting behavior.

My only issue with the game right now is matchmaking. It's ridiculous. The skill disparity is crazy. I end up queueing against people 2-3, sometimes 4 ranks higher than me.
Matchmaking for any game like this won't be great, but at least they're taking steps to fix it in ranked with MMR tweaks and stuff. In my experience it's at least passable when you're either below or above the elo hell that is Emerald
i think leagues biggest problem is match making and its snowbally nature. 90% of games are stomp or get stomped. u barely get comebacks and committing a single mistake in the early just fucks u over so hard that the next 10-15 mins are extremely unfun to play. a lot of interactions are also unfun af to play. e.g. u play as a melee against ranged top. take second wind + d shield. ur opponent attacks u, takes minion aggro, u run away and get an equal trade. but its boring as hell to get shoved in without any interaction until u hit lvl 6 or 3 depending on champ then all in them, kill them and wait for ur key abilities/summoner spells to come back off cooldown. like its not good or fun gameplay. way too many resident sleeper match ups. game duration is way too short. too much dmg creep. team fights last seconds, while they should last 1-2 minutes like they used to. also when i play as a d3 normal games with 4 bronze/silver/gold friends enemy team gets 3 masters and 2 dia players and im like wtf. my low elo friends dont want to play with me anymore because of that. i create a smurf. instant smurf queue. even in god dayum normals. like cant they just gimme 1 dia player in the enemy team so its balanced and my silver mates dont get obliterated by a 2million mastery points kata otp whos master/gm elo and sweating in a normal. adding stuff like runaans wont change any of these facts. if they want to make it more casual friendly remove snowball mechanics and increase game durations. give people a free tp back to lane when they die. they need to implement stuff like that. so even if u get steam rolled by a better play u still can have some fun and are not behind 2k+ gold and 2lvls after 8minutes into the game.

I play a handful of ranked games and get actual bots in my game. I am mid to high gold, and these bots have a hundred wins in intro AI bot games, and their first few ranked games are in plat and gold MMR.
I look at these "bot" players accounts a few days later, and they are in iron 4. I have a list of like 6 and i have no idea how to report them because riot requires you have been in a game with them.

League is good right now if you don't give too shits about your identity money or privacy. before you install the game. know that Riot games will monitor everything you do 24/7 as long as you have the game installed on your PC it is the ultimate spyware now. and all your info can be used at any point if they feel like it. also! if they get hacked the hackers can use Riot to hack and get all your information not only limited to your credit card but also your passport etc. so if you are prepared to risk all of that to play a stupid video game by all means go ahead. but don't tell me I didn't warn ya.
PS: Riot got hacked last year and the hackers said it was embarrassing how little protection they had.

My current experience: game is alright if I play after dinner, but any other time the matchmaking is f'ed.
If I play in the afternoon I'll get 3 matches in a row where I was winning or tying lane, but an AP assasin in a different role is on 15 kills somehow and we FF.
Like one match yesterday I had a TF jungle that ALWAYS went for all-ins against 1 or multiple people in the early game. Entire team was wondering what blud was doing.
Watched 1 minute of the video, heard "It 'might' improve" and stopped. I would say my hope died, but I never had any in the first place lol

Agreed on that completely, pinging allies' ultimates and summoner spells is part of playing correctly. Riot should either restore those pings or just add voice chat already
one word to counter your argument as whole: Vanguard, HEEEEEEL NAW i can't justify a chinese base company having full access to my pc for "detecting cheaters" that should not be my concern, that's yours as a game company, why should i risk potential breaches and harsh performance cause you can't keep up with scripts and cheats?

Personally I never complained about the game and only about allies. Also you can play whatever you want. This is proven by people reaching a higher rank than most complainers with random off meta builds.

LoR is not discontinued, they just shifted the focus from pvp and ranked to the pve aspect if the game(path of champions)

I feel i have a completely different opinion on this, i agree with a lot of what you said but over all this season has quite literally been the worst state the games been in ( maybe the second worst ) but truly frustrating the balancing issues are a complete nightmare 10x more than any other season and draft feels like a complete waste of time ( you instantly win/lose in champ select ) no matter how good you play as adc ( any other role will always stomp you even when behind ) then support being the easiest role in the game yet not the most impactful role in the game it's terrible having a support maokai in your lane 24/7 or a ridiculous range senna, etc , etc yet the balance changes every patch are so minimal and tend to consistently miss ( talking about 5 maokai nerfs for 5 different patches ) only lowering his win rate by 1% ( thats fuckin crazy and the balance team should be fired for that legit definition of incompetent ) i'd personally advise people to try your best to play other mobas and try helping those communities over leagues as they haven't cared for awhile

The new player experience is still horrendous. They should take an example from Wild Rift where new players are guided through an extensive series of tutorials and matches against bots before they can play against people, this mandatory process also discourages people from making smurf accounts.

Took a bit to relearn all changes but.. game is far better than it was for like 3 years i cannot lie. Riot, u idiot company.
I would take fair over fun anyday been playing tekken 8 recently and that game has fun characters but when u start to play ranked u start to see the fun stuff is annoying or basically has no counterplay

Custom skins are a very big part of the casual playerbase, too. These changes are hard to predict, guess we have to see

No one will agree with this take cuz its fun to simply hate on league, no reason needed, but I say I had never ever had so much fun playing league tbh, its all mad scientist bs right now, the game is so open to fun now, that yea some champs are bs and will be bs until some change in their kit but most can be played in 2-3 different playstyles which is mad, I had 3 games against briar lately where I got to play against ap, ad and bruiser briar. Right now I think league is just all about: go on try that build and runes on that random champ, and if it works it will be good for ranked'' its like pleasing both worlds in league, the competitive and casuals have something to play with. And that is without the new game modes and stuff that might be coming. So ig league just good now.
Who would thought that removing the system that made builds having a mandatory path, for 3 years, would actually make the game feel better to play.
