How the Broadway Subway Tunnels are Built
A multi-service vehicle delivers concrete pieces called "tunnel liner segments" to the tunnel boring machine. Using suction, the segment crane picks up each segment and moves it to the segment feeder. The segment erector installs each segment into place, forming a ring. Once final adjustments are made, the TBM uses the completed ring to propel forward and continue excavating.
