  • Join us on a journey beneath the surface as we uncover the remarkable technology behind tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and their pivotal role in how transit is being transformed in the GTHA so people can get to their destinations faster and easier.
From their size to their precision-driven operation, TBMs are true marvels of modern engineering. Discover how these mammoth machines chew through rock and soil with ease, leaving behind smooth, reinforced tunnels.
The tunnels in this video are for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension. There is also a TBM working on the Scarborough Subway Extension, and as construction progresses, they will also be seen on the Ontario Line and Yonge North Subway Extension.

TBM's are truly the most amazing transit building machines ever devised. Slowly but surely they can build transit lines effortlessly underneath our feet. Well done!

Very cool. Would love more behind the scenes content of tunnel and station construction. Exciting stuff!

Mississauga’s Hurontario LRT could have used a TBM. I realize that it would have made the project much more expensive but certain sections around Cooksville and Square One (including the proposed loop) should have been underground. What we’re getting instead is a glorified streetcar.

That explains how Line 1 extension tunnel is better looking than the rest

    Great video!
There's a rumour that one if these got stuck on the new line on Eglinton East. What really happened? And why is it taking so long to open up?

How do tunnels curve from down underground to up on grade? The TBM looks very heavy and large or is it just extra equipment behind it at 1:48 in the video animation. Also, I think Metrolinx and any other tunnel building machine in the GTA/Greater Golden Horseshoe should make the tunnel walls automatic with 0 help needed by people on foot because it looks like it needs help for the cement at 2:07 in the video, and having a second machine or a second part of the machine behind the parts with teeth and parts that put walls, that installs railway ballasts, railway sleepers, and rails.

Good video. Can you explain in the next video how these machines make the tunnel curves and elevation changes and how they are able to hit their target positions?

This video is a clear explanation of why a tunnel simply ought be avoided at all costs. The clear problem is that Metrolinx has a penchant for subways, subways, subways.

If you knew what you were doing the Eglinton West Subway would have been open years ago.
You all should be fired and sued!
