I live just west of Arbutus and see this every week while walking the area. From 1982-92 my office was right on the corner of Broadway & Cypress and I would have had a near bird's eye view of the work. The noise and vibration would make life pretty miserable though. I later had offices on the corner of Broadway & Arbutus - the western terminus and then Broadway & Burrard. All of these would have given me great vantage points. I still remember the regular trains that ran along Arbutus and crossed Broadway a couple of times each day. Oh, how times have changed. It seems that the organizers of the project have learned a thing or two about managing vehicle traffic after the mess that they created along Cambie Street and the businesses that suffered from lack of customer access. It's not great towards the Arbutus terminus but it's mostly accessible and the businesses are surviving.
Welcome! I've got a background in media and video production. Almost all of the information in these videos comes from the publicly released information that the project and government puts out. Plus I bother people on site and ask questions. In another life id be an engineer if I paid more attention in highschool haha
Great progress and good news with new development. I lived on broadway from 2017-2021. So much potential. Not having a fully protected one way bike lanes on both side of the broadway street is a big miss imo. It will be years before this street is redesigned
I'm not a biker, but I fully support additional bike lanes. Out of curiosity, how is 10th for biking? I walk out between Main and Oak, and it feels really ideal. But maybe a little too far off the main thoroughfare?
@@arden6725 That's just not true. The buses are 70% empty at the last few miles before the University during many times of the day. Either Rapid Bus or Bus Rapid Transit will do just fine for the bang for the buck. The last mile will always generate less revenue and bring less value per dollar, so choosing a cheaper service makes sense. It's basically a suburb, or a poorly designed downtown. The saved money should be invested in the north shore or maybe the highway bus routes. Service there will alleviate traffic jams that the university will never experience.
10:37 that worker eyeballing your drone. Do you have to get permission to film/fly to capture this footage? Or how does that work for you? Do you have any footage of ‘hostility’? 😅
10:37 is just a camera peaking over a fence :) I shoot everything from public property and follow all the regulations when flying my drone. I've been approached a couple times by crews when flying, never hostile, mostly just curious as to what I'm doing. You can get pretty far with a positive attitude and a smile!
Great drone work! Did you get approval from the airport authority? If not, it's illegal to fly a drone in most of Vancouver. In those locations that you were recording, you are under the Vancouver Harbour airspace. Check the NRC Canada Drone Tool Map when in doubt
Thanks! Yes, I'm working on the next update right now and should have it done shortly. Got a little busy with work and then a cough slowed me down, but it's coming!
Very Cool to see the same things from up top which I see under ground everyday . So proud to be a part of this project as a formwork consultant (Element Consulting Engineers) to this project.
Your videos are just amazing. It's well presented, informative, well shot and directed. Videos like this tend to be slow and honestly, a bit boring but yours, even without any soundtrack, is still very entertaining. It goes to show that you really took the time, effort and love to make these. I would love to see some more videos like this, even on different cities or countries.
@@StainerTheFirst they would probably need less lanes, especially if they're allowed to communicate electronically and if the Tesla app allowed carpooling.
This is good reporting. Besides, I wonder if precast segment would be less expensive to build rather than building formwork for every construction project. It seems like we are paying somewhere between 1.5 to 2.5x in construction costs compared to Europe and Asia.
It really does depend on the project. All the beams for the guideway are precast, same with the tunnel ring segments. But since the station boxes are all unique to match their sites, and having strict buildings code to follow, precasting doesn't really fit. Also have to remember that land costs, years of planning, business cases, and designing are all included in the 2.8B price tag. Could it be done cheaper? Probably. But would we've made the mistake once already by going cheap (Canada line).
Love the coverage! Keep it up. Can’t wait to see your coverage of Surrey/Langley when it kicks into gear. Any idea when your next video for that might come out? I know preliminary construction is still ongoing so I don’t imagine there is much to cover right now.
As someone who lives south of the Fraser the expansion of Sky Train on Broadway is an ongoing disappointment. Trans Link is still part of the underdevelopment of this part of Metro Vancouver. South of the Fraser has much less transit than the rest of Metro, We also have only one major hospital which still can't do angioplasty. This results in many hundred of unnecessary ambulance trips to New West and municipal Vancouver. Yes the line to Langley is in its infancy but long, long overdue. Trans Link resolutely ignores the rail line to Chiliwack. A community group saved the passenger rights on the line. Trans Link didn't. South of the Fraser is an automotive society and still be that long into the future. Municipal Vancouver is a weight around the neck of Metro Vancouver. Tear up its special charter and put it back under the Municipal Act. like all of the rest of the province. Stop the special treatment. Vancouver is a small minority of Metro.
Fun fact, Elsie completed her bore on Friday April 26th 2024!
Sounds like a very fun fact
Your content is exceptional. Will you be doing an update on the UBC Extension?
I think so😊
Someone with Translink needs to give this guy full access with a hard hat. Like wow, impressive details
That's the goal! Would love to be able to take everyone inside and see the progress as things get closer to completion.
Amazing work on documenting this entire project. Would be nice to see this kinda videos for other Vancouver constructions and projects.
Awesome work, can't wait for ground to break on the Surrey Langley skytrain and your coverage of that!
Nice, despite the delays I'm hoping they finish it in time for the World Cup in 2026.
Thanks for the high quality reporting!
Excellent work on keeping the public abreast of the lovely project! Keep them coming !
Incredible Camera drone work and reporting. Can’t wait to see this go on ! Thanks 🙏

Thanks for the updates! By the way, how do you get access to these sites, you work on the project itself?

Stainer, or anybody: how does Stainer know so much of this technical information?
Amazing video. Well done. Thank you.
I live at Broadway and Alder and could hear/feel the TBMs a few months ago when they passed.
WOOOOOOOOOOO
oh there rail dampers no wonder I feel the noise drastically reduced on the Victoria drive, I would say it works pretty well
Such an awesome video with great shots and informative commentary - thank you!
Now THIS is the content I signed up for
Hi I'm new here. Great video! May I ask what your background is and how you're so knowledgable with regards to this construction?

Have you considered covering the progress of the massive Oakridge Park redevelopment?
I haven't yet, I've got a couple other big infrastructure projects lined up that I think are more interesting. Still, it's neat seeing it go up.
Wow this is some real quality coverage! I appreciate it a lot!
Impressive. I live right by the new Arbutus station. Hope my condo goes up in value. All the men working 💪 on this project deserve accolades.
The B1M channel also recently did a vid on this project, not a bad one but lacking in some details you have in your vid.
It was a great overview of the project, but I'm a fan of seeing the detailed progress :)

@@izikavazo it is so hidden and not properly advertised as a bike friendly street even one street off 10th
These videos are so good!
I wish California could learn from Skytrain to build projects at a decent cost.
They should have just kept the TBMs going further west.
No. They should spend that specific money on other transit projects. This subway extension is worth the money, but not all the way to UBC.
@@eugenetswongit’s embarrassing that one of the biggest universities in canada isn’t connected to rail

Really great videos. So good to see the progress. Thanks for all your efforts.
whoa! nice catch for the railfans at 1:04!
The work sites are so "quiet". The crews are getting on with their work and not bellowing at each other, unlike many another construction site.
I tried getting pictures but a construction worker yelled at me lol
Do you know what will happen to the TBM once the job is done? Thank you.
As far as I know they'll be disassembled and sent back to (Germany?) be refurbished or recycled.
@@StainerTheFirst Thank you and hope that is what happens.
First video I have seen and I'm hooked! Looking forward to my home station at Oak VGH announcing a development on the actual SkyTrain site

Great work as always though

Where did you request permission to fly your drone?
I fly a micro drone so I just follow the local and federal regulations.
Thank you STF. Great video footage, and meaningful commentary even down to the hardness of the steel tracks and noise dampening technology.

2.8 bil for 5 km?
imagine how many Teslas taxi you could buy for that price.

YOu can clearly see how badly we need more qualified tradespeople to finish these mega structures.
If I went into trades instead of media, I'd be a homeowner by now
