    There were some crazy differences between jury vote and televote.

      Yes, the jury was given 11 points (and this is the last 26 places) and viewers 7 place difference 19 positions

      Paul Roberts I slightly doubt the academic approach of juries considering what kind of random people are in them. At least the public could stop Austria from a undeserved victory

      same as last year and I bet same as next year... somehow it seams to be normal that way. but the preferences of the jury are rather surprising considering how they did vote the last two years.... what ever, the discussions are the same every year. that should tell us something

      I think that was the saddest part of this year, i mean im really starting to doubt the professionality of the juries , this song was original , great voice , great performance, and not mainstream for gods sake. I understand if people dont vote for something , cause they vote often too political , but juries , why the hell did we put you there ?

    Who was robbed by jury is Ukraine. I was just shoked, as it seemed that the juries just did not watch or listen to Ukraines performance. I am not a melovinator, however he was good and his vocals were on point. Top 10 from televoters and last for jury. It looks like they need to be replaced.
    Also the thing about countries finishing on high spots with jury and vad results from public vote. It is just unbeliavable and sad same time.
    Best wishes from very sad ukrainian. And Melovin, you need to know that you are awesome!

    Sweden's jury result is outrageous.
    Austria's jury result is unexpectedly high. Like... I liked his song and wanted him to do well, but 1st place??? Seriously?
    Australia being last place in the televote is hilarious :D And I can't even say that it was undeserved. She just couldn't control her vocals.
    Ukraine and Denmark being so low with the juries is outrageous.
    That one jury that gave Norway 12p should be ashamed of themselves.
    Czechia did so well in the televote, super happy for him!
    Albania was 7th with the juries!!! I'm so pleased with that! :)
    Germany on 4th place overall! Thanks to everybody who voted! We really needed that

    The fact that all of you didn’t see Italy coming so high is a perfect example of the detachment between the press/jury and the public sentiment
    Italy has always been a fan favourite, from the very beginning. And never gave in. If you saw in detail comments on TH-cam, Facebook, Reddit and other social media you would realize how big and compact Italy’s fanbase was. Plus the performance was very high impact, especially if you’re not an Anglophone and you read the lyrics in your language. If that isn’t a message of unity amongst all cultures I don’t know what else could be so. Truely one of the best performances.
    Sorry for ranting but I just needed to pull all of it out of my chest.

      I gotta say I didn't like this year's song from Italy, BUT I really, really, respected them and their song, as well as I respect Italy as a country for performances and art overall so... I would NEVER understand the "hate" that exists from the juries to Italy...

    • @filomenamercurio5298
      @filomenamercurio5298 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with your assessment - I like you have been reviewing the social media platforms and seeing a different story. Fans liked the Italian song very much. The official Italian video, (not the Eurovision one had 20 million hits...way more than Netta's 18 million. The performance is strong. The media did not get behind this song but choose the message from France to promote that. Williams interview with Ermal and Fabrizio was an intelligent one. The discrepancy between the jury and the telemeters for Italy was a stand out and I cheered the fact they came third. Europe got the message. Somehow others who have greater platforms did not project an accurate picture.

    • @filomenamercurio5298
      @filomenamercurio5298 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @tubinho79
      @tubinho79 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Italy has a "problem". It's called RAI. The Italian TV broadcaster is not interested in hosting Eurovision. If it was not for the jury, they would have to host the show every 2 or 3 years...that would be insane, so something has to be done to stop that.
      There's a reason why Italy stayed so many years out of Eurovision, they came back in 2011 but the "problem" continues. You only have to see how popular their songs are among the public, if the jury voted the same way, then RAI the Italian TV broadcaster would be f"#$%&d.

      I agree with what you're saying. I was passionately rooting for Cyprus, but I'm also kinda glad that Netta won, it proves that the voting is not quite so predictable and generic. It's nice having something that's simultaneously cheerful, adorably chaotic and technically superb.
      Having said that, I was sorry that Belgium and Greece didn't get into the finals. They and Cyprus were my favorites from the start and while they all significantly differ from each other, each was masterful in its own genre/theme. Estonia, too, the idea was clear and it was executed flawlessly.

      I think that the reason that the juries got behind Austria and Sweden was because of their songs' having the strongest potential to be successful outside of Eurovision. But even with that logic, I still don't understand why they were so icy towards Cyprus, since that struck me as the most radio-friendly track of the bunch. Was there a certain sexist double standard?

    As for Italy guys, I was watching ESC with 10 of my friends, none of us had Italy even in the top 10 leading up to the final, but after the performance we all scored them 12. I got chills all the way through, it touched me and especially the moment I saw their lyrics in Croatian on screen. They absoultely for me deserved even higher than 5th place. So sad for Almaia, they were in my top 10 for sure, as well as France. Jury needs to go. Sweden should've been in the last 5.

      Kessra well.... Europeans got the message behind our song.... judging from the few points televoters gave to Sweden it seems like the audience at home gave more importance to the lyrics than the staging.

    • @Kessra
      @Kessra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Place Italy first in the running order and see if it still gets 3rd by televotes. I highly doubt that. The average attention span of a typical ESC viewer is probably limited to 3-4 songs even with the summary recap at the end. And please stop with the message thing, every song somehow conveys a message to some degree. At the end this is a song contest and not a we put (political) messages in songs competition. Sure it's a fine line to where political messages start and where "historical" events end and ESC has had such problems already in the past. In the end EBU should be more rigid to which songs are allowed to compete and which not.

      Isn't that their job to assess songs professionally, ie also radio friendly?
      And my impression this is one of the least neighbour-friendly voting rounds ever due to so many blocs being ripped apart during semi-finals.
      Maybe we should split the contest. One award from professional jury, one from the general public.

    Just trying to understand the outcome of this evening...
    I guess there are 3 groups out there:
    - people listening to the songs many times before the TV shows, they easily forget about their first impressions, changing their opinions quite often, connecting with each of the songs.
    - in difference: most voting people probably just watch the performances once or twice, being less able to build up connections to more than 3-10 songs, looking for some outstanding features (26 songs are quite a load of impressions).
    - the juries: I've watched ESC with friends, some of them working in music business and they quite enjoyed Austria's entry, saying this was outstanding, more subtle than others and still radio-friendly (just like Sweden). On the other hand, especially Sweden, Bulgaria and Australia were quite cold and impersonal, making it hard to build up a relationship within 3 minutes. But people with a sense for sophisticated/modern/correct sounding music (and (often) no interest in settings, danceability, politics,...) will not notice. The jury keeps some kind of objectivity and makes it possible that high-quality songs (that are probably more boring for many people) still keep their place in ESC, that's the songs people are buying, that's what the artists are living from.
    So, imo all the 3 groups have their spots in ESC, making it what it is, one missing part would cause damage.

      Its a matter of opinion of course, but a lot of people think that eurovision should be about making an impression on the people. When half the points come from a small panel of "experts" it's much easier to target aspects of the song to impress them in ways that the general audience member wouldn't care about. This leads to songs that aren't actually very good to you and me getting large amounts of points.

    I hope your lack of understanding of how IT 🇮🇹 came in top five derives from the same lack of understanding mine does. WHY ERMAL AND FABRIZIO HAD THE SAME DESTINY IL VOLO HAD? Why the hell jury does this to Italy all the time? I am Incredibly proud nonetheless. This was the proof of the message being transmitted and that is what mattered the most. You said in one of your videos, "i do not like it because this should not be a lyrics video it should be like San Remo performance" ..to be honest for them it is a lyrics video, because to transmit the message meant to have a successful performance.. so the comment about 🇮🇹 's performance doing nothing for you actually might have done something, reminded you sth was happening in our world and that was Ermal' s and Fab's definition of "doing sth to you" ✌️💖

      Bella risposta - Ermal and Fabrizio perfetti. What is the difference between the language overlay with the LED graphics of Germany. I loved both songs but Michael's Staging William was the more cheesy. The Italian overlay worked on the level that languages are important and recognises that each country performing has a language other than English except for England and Ireland, Switzerland has 4 languages. Let's celebrate languages even if it is an overlay. Beautiful. Italian deserved 5th position and could have done better had the jury vote been better. What is the bias towards Italy on behalf of the jury, and this is something that has been noted for many years. Marco Mengoni,'s L'essenziale deserved better than 6th position...Il Volo was robbed, Gabbani last year... The jury needs to do better.

      At least televoters recognized this beautiful masterpiece. Italy was only 4 points behind Cyprus in the televote :) but I agree, I mean just look at the UK jury: 4 out of 5 people in the UK jury placed Italy LAST. They seriously thought it was the worst song in the competition. That's not a competent nor fair judging of actual quality. That's just nonsense. The useless jury have proved they do not belong in ESC anymore. It is time for change.

    The jury system is diabolical. Greece & Cyprus, Montenegro & Serbia, etc., as well as the fact that they are out of touch with the public. I work in assessment and I design scoring rubrics and I train raters to score using those rubrics. Each juror should have a rating sheet with individual criteria for each area of assessment, such as those to do with vocal performance, the song and the stage performance. They should then mark each of these individually and provide a justification. At the moment, there’s no means of asking jurors to justify their vote, so there’s no accountability and the system is wide open to corruption and bias.

    Well, as a swede, I’m not surprised at all that Ingrosso fell deep with the public vote. It’s the kind of song that is visually okay, but it’s thin as ice in spring, when it comes to the song itself. A song that’s get played in the radio at 2am, to offend nobody. The juries is clearly out of touch with the audience, but I was pleasantly surprized that Austria got high scores from them. For me, Israel have been a great contender, and is truly a worthy winner. But Bulgaria, Hungary and Italy were the winners for me.

    • @Kessra
      @Kessra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because he was technically probably two to three steps ahead of the rest of the field (except for Estonia probably). The song is pretty much radio-friendly in all of the 43 countries as well. With half of the songs not even requiring singing (in a song contest ...) someone should question what "songs" the competition should include. Probably a couple of "artists" wont have their voice for very long if they continue what they're doing. But who cares in times where the quick fame is more important than the long-term goal ...
      But yeah, Austria winning the juries vote was a bit of a surprise actually. Would have placed it among my top 5 jury wise (just ranking it by radio friendlieness and actual siniging technique) without including any visuals.

  • @MrMike855
    @MrMike855 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I've defended the juries for years, but they did almost nothing right this year. Overhyping Sweden and Austria, giving nothing to Hungary, Denmark or Italy. Ranking Ukraine last. Every year, there's typically a jury favorite that I like a lot, but even the "jury bait" songs I liked like Germany and Estonia still did pretty well with the televote anyway. Not as well, obviously, but not enough for me to be upset. Even Lithuania, a song that I thought would get nothing from the televoters (relatively speaking, I didn't expect nul points) got basically the same with both. For years, people complained about the televoters voting for cheesy meaningless songs, but it seems like the juries have become addicted to overly polished songs without much meaning. Very interesting to think that, at their core, both juries and televoters like meaningless songs, but in a different way.

    • @KajsaBernhardina
      @KajsaBernhardina 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha excellent comment ;) seems both juries and televoters want 'fast food music' just different, some want KFC while others go for the McDondals. Real and raw emotion (from for example Italy and Hungary) is left behind. At least Italy got a high televote score, it saved the entire contest for me.

    • @MrMike855
      @MrMike855 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, now that I think about it, the juries did give a lot of points to Albania, while the televoters didn't give them much. Albania wouldn't have even qualified if not for the juries. So, I guess that's one good thing they did. I have no idea how they could hype up Australia and Sweden so much, yet ignore the passion and emotion from Hungary and Italy (Hungary wouldn't even have made it to the final if the jury had their say, so there's that). I'd say a better comparison would be that, continuing the fast food metaphor, the juries love Taco Bell, while the televoters love McDonald's.

    I don't know if I'm the only one, but the most of the comments I'm reading are like "omg, Cyprus deserved to win Eurovision", "Eleni was robbed", etc. Yes, I cannot deny that the song has good summer vibes, but the song itself is just okay. She was more dancing and good looking on stage than a good singer. Moreover, Eurovision give different artists the chance to show people how unique they are, and the only thing I can say is that Eleni was more a Beyoncé wannabe. At that last point, Netta has won the competition in my opinion (To be honest, she wasn't my favourite, that was Ukraine, but she just deserves it)

    50/50 is the best way for voting. People might not agree with the jury but they bring some kind of balance. Just look at Australia and Malta. I disagree , and apparently , most people in Europe. And if Eurovision continues like this, people will stop watching, because , you vote you want to see someone you actually voted for to win, or at least get a good rank, i am not saying it was bad, it just was extremely mediocre, as a song as a voice as a performance.

    • @proton6179

      so you tell me that until the jury votes were added , Eurovision winner would alway win because of that phenomenon ? If people like something they vote for it, look at history of Eurovision and you will understand. Otherwise , we can ban people voting totally , and let people decide who actually studied music, who actually had a career , people of different music styles . But like this , it won't survive long.

      Of which they where? Estonia with a well-tranined Soprano, OK fine with her. But who else could "really" sing? Plenty of acts where more screaming (or trying to show-off) than actually singing. Half of the songs (including Austria) where forgettable Radio-friendly Pop or RnB songs with meh messsages. A handful of ballads (Lithuania, Germany, Irland maybe Albania) and the remaining songs can't be grouped together easily. Out of these 43 songs that took part in ESC 2018 probably only one or two songs will survive the contest and get played on local radio anyways.
      In contrast to your fuss about jury votes, I don't understand televotes also - Italy should have placed 3rd by televotes. Really? I just listened to the song againg and no, if this deserves 3rd place then Austria deserves 1st place by jury votes as well. Maybe the attention span of the average European couldn't just rembember the start of the contest compared to the last entry of the competition.
      Anyways, same discussion after each ESC. Things will never change with the current rules. What might help is to increase jury sizes to like 10-15 people to flatten out outliers (like Austria and Sweeden obviously) and count every vote by the public not just the top ranked ones per country.
