  • Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands.

I actually went and saw yo yo ma not even a month ago and he played for us students. My jaw dropped and all I could think about was trying to hold back my tears so YO YO MA wouldn't see me crying. He played the Bach cello suite in G major for us as warm up then played this as rehearsal and it was just amazing. He's a great guy and an amazing player.

Guys, it's not JUST Jacqueline Du Pre's cello concerto. Just because someone else is playing the piece slightly differently (Their own interpretation, which is the intention from the start), does NOT mean they're playing it wrong. Saying so is disrespectful.

Words cannot describe the emotions this beautiful piece draws out, and the performance by Ma is almost too good to be true. It is pieces like this that are the reason I love Romantic Era music so much, but it makes me want to go out and spend a few thousand dollars to buy a cello, several years of lessons, and find enough other musicians so I can perform this myself... All of which I don't have the time or money to properly invest. I guess buying this off iTunes is good enough

I live in a small town in central Wisconsin and was thrilled to find out he was performing in the area. My family owns a German restaurant in the area, and my father is a huge fan of classical music. The night before the performance he came to eat dinner at my families restaurant. I can not put into words how genuine and nice of person he is. He and his guests even sang happy birthday for my father who turns 74 in a few days. His musical gift is only surpassed by how wonderful of a person he is.

He is the master of his cello, master companion one should say, and a technician second to none, drawing from his instrument the most fabulous range of sounds, paying due tribute in dynamic style to the beauty, religious- in terms of faith and inspiration- and primal earthiness- by way of his rootedness in rural England- of Elgar's divine work

As they're all saying; just type Jaqueline Du Pre. The rest is most definitely history. Yo Yo is not even close!
Elgar's Cello Concerto was not a popular live piece until JDP got hold of it. She chose it because she liked it. Modern players obviously choose it knowing why it became popular. Yo Yo interprets it differently, but with his characteristic rounding/smoothing of notes it doesn't compare at all for me. Far too saccharine and devoid of the drama and emotion Elgar had in mind. I think with this piece JDP takes the music a step beyond the composer. Not many musicians are capable of that at all.

Barenboim along Barbiroli and Jacqueline Du Pré as cellist took this concerto to the first place. Haydn famous one and also Dvorak and Saint-Saens, though wonderful lost for long time the audience preference. Sir Elgar's one has something spiritual that makes a great difference. Also the sad fact that Du Pré died so young after played it magistrally has given to it a special sense.
Yo Yo Ma performance is no doubt excellent.

If Ma is indeed playing the Davidov which he inherited from the legendary cellist, Jacqueline du Pre, then it is the spirit of du Pre that is moving his fingers here! There is no need to argue whose interpretation of this eternal work is better as they are all good with each having their own respective merit. It is a question of taste, "de gustibus non est disputandum!"

    • @orangetree222

the shape of the cello looks like his montagnana (his main instrument). i heard he modified the strad to play mainly baroque music as the strad was a bit "unpredictable" (by du pre)

I think Yo-Yo Ma is very good at playing Elgar's Cello Concerto. But wouldn't it be great if I would choose him to be a member of my string quartet that I'm planning some time? By the way, I'm going to New York and I'm seeing Yo-Yo Ma with the New York Philharmonic Next Year.

You can purchase a cello through Violin Outlet, Guitar Center or even online (Craigslist is a great option). You will need to start with tapes on the fingerboard and eventually you can play without the tapes. You do not need to be a "genius". It is very, very rare that someone can pick up an instrument and be automatically musical. Skill takes practice. Best of luck to you! Cello is absolutely beautiful. :)

Ma's given name is morphologically poetic and lovely. The first 'Yo' is a verb, meaning "to be true", "to be loyal", and "to be a real friend'; the second "Yo" means "friend". Both characters are written the same way in Mandarin Chinese. I love his tone and the color, as well as the way he brings out the beauty of the piece with a perfectly balanced technique and superb music sense. This performance has moved me in a way which is hard to describe.

I wonder what Barenboim is thinking when he's conducting this piece, his late wife's exemplar. This concerto only makes me sad about Du Pre and her relationship with Barenboim. Such a shame and such a jerk, Barenboim.
And honestly, I hear the quality of notes from Yo Yo Ma, but the sense of depression and how the music gets so emotional and deep can only be portrayed by Du Pre.
