- Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands.
People say that Ma exagerates too much, but he's a musician who's feeling his music. This is a very emotional piece and I think it would be a crime not to put the emotion into this peice that it was meant for, and Ma does a great job of displaying the emotion meant for this piece and gives an absolutely breath-taking performance of this whole concerto. Great job, he doesn't deserve to have people hating on him that can't get on stage and play a fraction of that well. Yo- Yo Ma is the BEST EVER!
The way Elgar chose to end this concerto is one of the best examples of "pulling out all the stops". When you listen to the whole concerto, by the time you get to the ending and hear how he brilliantly ties it all together, it truly creates a heart stopping moment in time!
agreed. The last two line are my favorite to pay
this movement makes me cry, is so big i feel with Elgar Cello Concerto, when i was younger the first movement was the best for me because when i closed my eyes i imagined Jacqueline du pre playing and she inspired me when i was a teenager, but now i prefer the last movement and Yo-Yo Ma is so talented and inspirating too, i´m not a musician...i'm a ballet dancer who loves Cello and Cellist, after my ballet life i want to learn playing Cello, Thanks Yo-Yo Ma
He plays with so much passion... he is truly speaking through his cello. I will never see a better cello maestro than Yo-Yo Ma.
This is my favourite movement in the entire concerto, and Yo Yo Ma plays it with such passion, emotion and vision... It moves me... thank you for this recording.
Finished watching all four movements. Multiple times; they were the only things that helped me get through the night, and finish my project.
His musical personality is so effervescent!! There’s so much ease and charm.
I don't know any word to describe this spectacular performance!
Incredibly amazing
a person comes alive when playing cello. when playing the cello your heart , your body , your soul they all become part of the piece you play on the cello thats what makes this beautiful
Vigor when needed, sensitivity when called for. So much pressure with the bow at the end, but still such an incredible sound! Unbelievable.
Fantastic artistry by YYM. I think the whole orchestra played their butts off. Beautiful work by Elgar. A night to remember. I wish I was there to see it live...
Amazing, Breathtaking, Impressive, Astonishing, Awesome, Magical, Unthinkable, Wonderful, Skillful, Smooth, and Impossible are some of the things I can describe Yo-Yo Mama's playing skills. He is just a genius at cello!
its time that we all stop comparing these super amazing cellists. I heard both du pre and yo yo's renditions of this piece many many times and their very different, but neither is better than the other. And before we critize anyone on youtube, lets look at ourselves and see what we have accomplished first
Incredible performance!
To me, I look at Yo Yo Ma as a man completely head over heals in love with music.. You speak of all the details and the perfect recollection he has for the notes, but if you think of the music like you would a loved one, it suddenly makes it easier.. Sitting back and closing your eyes, you can remember everything.. the smell of their hair, the sound of their voice.. Even every out of place freckle... Every little detail. That is just how much Yo Yo Ma loves music and loves this piece.. ^////^
What a moving performance, Ma is obviously emotionally moved at the end and so is Barenboim who has a special attachment to this piece as well. Just beautiful, at times it seemed as though a heavenly angel had descended upon Ma connecting him with Barenboim and the orchestra
Yo Yo Ma...world-class musician - he can play any composer (including jazz & folk) in some sublimely divine level...also a wonderful and charming human being. I played in an orchestra accompanying him on a short Dvorak piece Silent Woods..women orchestra members were in line to talk to him and get his autograph afterwards..he is truly gracious. What a gift. He works for music education in schools as well. Peace & love through the best music possible ...breaks all barriers.
Another item for the bucket list: This live concerto by Yo-Yo Ma.
outstanding composition - and an exquisite performance ... BRAVO!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this movement :) the intensity and musicality and beautiful notes are just enthralling!
this made me cry. Thank you for posting this.
So true, the orchestra works so well with him. They never play too loud and their dynamics match his. So good!
I love it at 2:19 when he starts to 'battle' against the violas!! yesh!
also at 2:59
This performance is spectacular very good playing by Yo Yo Ma OMG OMG this is so good this one of th best pieces of music i've ever heard in my life!
you have more respect for the musician when you know how dedicated they are. Yo yo Ma deserves mad respect because it would take days or weeks even for a master like his self to memorize a song of this caliber and play it so perfectly. definitely a true master among masters . =)
3:34 Somebody forgot their rockstop :)
F
Yeah, I mean, poor guy, I had my endpin slip in my student orchestra performance, but in a somewhat famous performance like this one, that's just an absolute L.
So amazing! I just started learning cello a couple of months ago and Yo-Yo Ma is a constant source of inspiration. If I can become a quarter the player he is, I will consider it a great achievement.
Bravo! I love Mr. Ma's energy!
There is no other piece out there that pushes the Cello to its limits other than Elgar's Cello concerto.
Yo-yo Ma plays the cello as if it was part of him!! Absolutely amazing!! Such control and techinque!
In my most honest opinion, I do not believe that after watching and listening to the 35+ minutes of the Elgar Cello Concerto that the most amazing fact is how well Yo Yo Ma played the piece, how beautiful the piece is, or even how well the CSO played underneath him, but rather the fact that he memorized the music down to an exact art. Throughout the entire performance did he not appear to make a single mistake, miss a note, or play out of tune, but he also managed to play with so much emotion!
This video of this movement got me through the hardest time. Jacqueline du Pre certainly brought this concerto to life (and she is one of my favorite cellists), but in this performance, Yo Yo Ma makes it without a doubt IMMORTAL.
He had so much fun playing this.
Anything I say will not do this work justice! It is the work of the English master Elgar . Need I say more? Thank you YYM/ and the "band" for a great performance!
Okay, I think everybody loves the du Pre performance, which will probably always be remembered as the best. But you can't deny that this is an amazing performance. He really does this piece well.
Yo Yo Ma is the only cellist I've listened to capable of keeping my interest through all 4 movements of this concerto. I've never been a big fan of this concerto but Yo Yo Ma makes me love it.
The 4th movement is my favorite. I can listen to this all day.
A breathtaking performance.
Thx for upload.
I've watched all four movements, they've made my day.
I get chills every time! Such a dramatic ending!
What a grand tune! Amazing how majestic tunes came so naturally to the son of the piano tuner.
the fourth movement is my absolute favorite! and yes, they made my day too!
man this concert helps me make poems that really rock!
omg i love this concerto! and the part where the cellos play in unison is so cool
Magnificent recital yoyo!
this is certainly one of those moments that is just miraculous, Ms Dupree would be proud
nice play yoyoma, i am your favorite cellist, i am cellist, keep up the good work, best wishes
CELLO RULES
@ashcello93 Yes, Mr.Ma main cello is a Domenico Montagnana, Venice, 1733, indeed. But it seems to me here is the Stradivarius Davidov, the same used in the recording of the Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and a tribute to Jacqueline du Pré.
Thumbs uo for everyone who ever tried to performe this movement, too.
Amazing.
It's crazy how much control he has even joy he's moving all over the place.
Absolutely mind-boggling! Just wow, seriously passionate, almost as good as Du Pré herself at weilding that beast of a Davydov!
this is my favorite movement...especially because of the viola/cello melody at 3:19- 3:44 my favorite part of orchestral pieces is when violas and cellos have melody together. It sounds so beautiful and epic and rich with their deep, melodic sound!! Violas and Cellos 4ever!!
Wonderful!
bravo maestro!
Just love YYM!! Does anyone notice he is always wearing glasses, but never reads any music?
thats becouse he know the piece and he's playing it from his head
+Daina Jonušienė but what does he need glasses for then? I believe that is what the other person was trying to say. I believe he needs them on all the time whether he is reading or not though
YYM without glasses would not be YYM
He wears glasses, because he is shortsighted. That means, he does not wear glasses to read, but to see in the distance, not to stumble and fall, to recognize people! And, of course, all soloists play - at least concertos, if not sonatas - from memory, never from music.
Superb!!!
I can't believe the 28 dislikes.....it's impossible, who can hate this. This is amazing
Very good!!!!!!!
"Theres just some things you do not question" -- what an idiotic statement. DuPre or anyone else does not "own" a piece or an interpretation. By playing the Elgar, Ma is simply sharing it as he sees and feels it at that time, not challenging DuPre or anyone else.
I had a hard time breathing at the end. Stunning!
incredible...
GREAT!!!
Such musical perfection. Whoever said he had a mess-up should post a video of themselves playing. I'm sure they would sound like crap in comparison to this. One of the greatest of all time. Elgar would be proud. (Jacqueline as well)
Favorite part of this movement, 6:00 onward. Kills me at 7:18
No hay palabras para definir algo tan Bello
His expressions and smiles......
Yeah It's perfect...
That's the most sense the last page of this concerto has ever made to me.
He turns the cello into some sort of magical beast.
couldn't agree more caverwood - spot on !! tonally not as rich but the orchestra give far more of themselves and support the soloist much more. The orchestra with Du Pre are all about 100 years old and don't half do it "by the book"
The orchestra here is more dynamic but then perhaps there is more freedom than in the 60's
Great!!
It's even better in person, if that's even possible to comprehend.
Because to cut after the run/"attaca" would be silly on YT, because that meant you'd have to click somewhere else to continue, making a 1 second pause a whole lot more. Cutting just before the run gave plenty of space and provided the continutity to go from mvmt 3->4 where there was already a natural pause. I'm thinking of you, people. ;)
I'm a Cellist learning to play the 1st Movement of this Concerto and I just think that I should say that this level of cello playing is just absolutely mind blowing!
Yo-yo Ma's interpretation of this work is far more faithful to the original score than Du pre's is, even though she was a wondeful cellist.
A very sweat concerto really cool. YO-YO-MA RLZ
I'm surprised that Barenboim chose to conduct this piece again. I read somewhere that Zubin Mehta tried to conduct it after JdP had died, and he was so emotional he could barely finish, and then never conducted it again. I guess I just figured Barenboim would've felt the same way. All that aside, this is a beautiful interpretation. I love that it's nothing like Jackie's. It shows how each musician is so unique in their own ways, even with the same piece.
omg, i just paused it. time to start it over again.
Sir Edward Elgar - Cello Concerto, Op. 85: Mr.Barenboim made an unforgettable recording of this masterpiece with his wife Jacqueline du Pré and the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, in November, 1970...maybe the best cellist of the 20th century...
The cello used by Yo-Yo Ma here, a Stradivarius Davidov is the same.
¡ Bravisimo !
Okay, so as Hume has suggested, tastes are purely subjective and arise from sentiment rather than reason, but to whomever is giving Yo-Yo Ma bad ratings, I suggest their motive is jealousy rather than critical demerit.
I am very lucky, I got to see him teach this movement in a master class
OK, thanks for clarifying. Anyone is free to have their preferences on artist, performance, etc. I personally took issue with the idea of "not questioning" as another way of saying "there is no other way." I think DuPre will *always* be a reference for this work as it's first champion, but I have to think she'd be thrilled at Ma's performance.
Yo-Yo Ma's facial expressions are ingenious.
that ending from Allegro Molto to the end gave chills.
the person who uploaded this got the movement timings wrong.
Naah! It isnt a stupid question at all. Glad I could be of service to you, my fellow cellist.
Okay I would like to submit yo yo's run at the very beginning as the cleanest shit EVER!!!! Havent heard anyone play that run so well before
u go buddy!
What is so ironic is that the cello YYM is playing is probably the Davidoff which was left to him by Jacqueline Du Pre; then having Barenboim conducting ... it's kinda cool. Like the music lives on to be played by that cello.
Yes he recorded it in the early nineties with the Walton concerto and two miniatures by Delius.
just look at Mr Barenboim when he thanks YYM. The expression on his face tells us how great this really is! You're a great fool if you say this is not good...
BREATHTAKING! OH MAN!!!!!
Great. He's really doing what Elgar wrote
Oh my goodness he's so very good. And his personality is such that you are preconceivedly warm to him anyway before hearing him play. the clarity on those fast passages is really somthing. woa it gets really slow at 3:30. bit better when he conducted it 30-40 years ago. i love barenboims touch on this piece though
And yet, he plays wonderfully. Has the technical skills that most cellist dream to have. And the musicality that most musicians never develop. So who cares what face he makes. I rather watch him make faces than to be a stiff board, and do nothing. The expressions on his face help the audience. Part of a performance is to connect with the audience. Perhaps he doesn't connect with you, but he's connected with a lot of people =]
Whatever the opnions and comparison, the music stays as good as it is.
He sweats more than I do after a five mile run :) Now that's passion!
nice!
Whoever suggests that Ed Elgar's public are just his fellow Britons should take notice of how popular this concerto is all around the world.
man... to watch this when i just started it again :/. i hope i can play near as fast and articulated in the 2nd movt as yo yo does in this performance
Impressive!
