Kathy Bates was a little *TOO* good in this movie. This was the first movie I'd ever seen her in, and she was *SO* good that every time I saw her afterward, I became noticeably uncomfortable. She earned her Academy Award 100%!

When this movie came out I was in college. I was taking a sociology class from a guy who claimed that he knew Kathy Bates quite well. It was disturbingly easy to get him to waste class time talking about her. No idea if it was true, but obviously he was all about how lovely and sweet and kind she is as a human being. I can't get over how much fun she seems to be having whatever she's playing - especially all the fucked up human beings she played in "American Horror Story" with her BFF Jessica Lange. LMAO!!

@@alwayswrite2011 Sounds just like my guy. He would invariably begin every other day’s lecture with an account of the wedding he attended over the weekend that “my friend Kathy Bates” was also a guest at. Obviously it had to have been a kick to see her succeed so brilliantly, but it didn’t seem to be about her. Know what I mean?

@@karlmortoniv2951 Vicarious fame. They make for fun stories so long as you don't run them into the ground.
For example, my girl and I were walking down Amsterdam Ave. in NY, NY, on our way to see JQ & the Bandits perform live, acapella. We were so wrapped up in conversation that we accidentally collided with a small group as they exited a restaurant. We all made quick checks to be sure no one was hurt and apologies were made all around, and our two groups went our separate ways. My girl and I took five steps before we froze in our tracks and looked back in shock. We'd literally bumped into Paul Simon, Steve Martin, and Martin's wife at the time, Victoria Tennant.
It's a fun story. I like telling it when conversations about brushes with fame come up. (Or vicarious fame, in this case.) But imagine how boorish it'd be if I told the story every time Steve Martin appeared on screen or I heard a Paul Simon song. Even *I* would roll my eyes at me! ;-)

This is to date the only Stephen King adaptation to win an Oscar, for Kathy Bates as Best Actress. King himself was so impressed by her that he wrote an entire other book, Dolores Claiborne, for the sole purpose of her playing the title character. Which is also well worth checking out, by the way.
It's actually kind of a shame how much her performance overshadows James Caan, who also does some career-best work here. The whole movie would fall apart if he ever once let up in making us feel the pain and vulnerability that Paul is in, and he never does. The role was actually quite hard to cast, as Rob Reiner really wanted a typically "manly" actor to make his position more shocking, and most of them didn't want to do it as they thought it would hurt their image to spend a whole movie at the mercy of a woman. But Caan said screw that noise, and we're all the richer for it.

Kathy Bates was not known at all before this movie. She was mostly a stage actor but the Director Reiner, had seen one of her plays and knew she was brilliant. How many actress can say they won an Academy on their first feature film? If you want a heartwarming movie, she is amazing in Fried Green Tomatoes. Such a good movie! That was my first movie of hers. She is in my top 3 for actresses along with Angela Bassett and Bette Midler. Which is funny because Bette Midler turned down this role! She eventually said it was really stupid of her, lol. It worked out for us though because we got the amazing Kathy Bates.
“She read one line,” Reiner shared. “She had a whole scene prepared, and after the first line, I said, ‘You don’t have to read, I know you’re great. You have the part.'”
    “She said, ‘Really?'”

Then he writes this story and I get the feeling the character of Annie is not that far from some people who've told him they were his number one fan. One of the main reasons supposedly being they didn't like how passive a character Paul was, not that tough. James Caan absolutely crushed it in the role.

If y’all like Stephen King stuff can y’all watch maximum overdrive? It’s one of his movies from the 80s and it’s about an alien controlled comet that surrounds the earth and makes machines and 18 wheelers and planes and stuff like that become autonomous killers in this group of people gather in a truckstop and have to survive for seven days until the comet leaves. Also the entire soundtrack of the movie is AC/DC so already it’s pretty awesome lol

So Paul is chained to Misery like Stephen was chained to horror. Also Stephen was addicted to drugs and alcohol at the time of him writing the novel and you can tell since Paul in book was addicted to novril and describes withdrawal.
