This was originally a Graphic Novel, by J O'Barr, Who lost his fiance' in a car accident, and his doing this graphic novel was his way of coming to terms with it. He was against there being a movie, but Brandon helped convince him, which makes his death on the set even more tragic.
Unfortunately Brandon's death made him wish he had never written the comic book, as he partly blamed himself for starting the chain of events that led to such a tragic outcome.

This movie received positive reviews by Critics, including Roger Ebert, he called it "a fever dream of a movie, a well made feature length music video, and the Cinematography makes the film so dark and gritty, it makes Gotham City look like Emerald City."

The Crow is a story in Bethany's memory. The former partner of creator James o Barr, who died when she was run over by a drunken man. He wanted revenge on his way home from military service, but learned that the driver had died of natural causes. Consumed by impossible revenge and the terrible sadness of having lost the woman he loved so much. So he dedicated himself to making a comic book, pouring all his pain into it. The Crow was born. That's why this work is so touching.
It’s based on a comic, that has since become a graphic novel. I can’t recommend it enough. The connection between him and the crow is amazing, in the book.
Peak 90’s Gothic nihilism!! One of the best soundtracks of the 90’s without a doubt! Alex Proyas (the Direcor) also made another great stylized movie called “Dark City” which I highly recommend!

The stuntman for Brandon Lee on this film was Chad Stahelski. Chad would later direct all the John Wick films and he also was the stuntman for Keanu in the Matrix. They also had to CGI Brandons Lee's face onto Chad Stahelski body to finish the film.
A tragic double edged sword. Set a high bar for mature comic book movies and we lost a great super star who was on an upward trajectory. The Crow is such a great work of art.

As a result, it gave fans Johnny Cage van Damme was the choice till he turned it down also since had just done "streetfighter" your original claim that "he was going to play Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat movie" is false. since you won't believe me, here is what director of Mortal Kombat, Paul W. S. Anderson said regarding the Lee as Cage rumors. "It was briefly discussed, but I don't think he was ever made an official offer. Lee was not going to be Cage. MK still sucked & it was not a "hit". a moderate box office success at best. It wasnt just the pain Shelley had that he had to endure, it was also what the guys did to her to cause the pain. The humiliation, the beating, and the rape. He felt it all.
The "thirty hours of pain..." was just the hospital stuff. They address that earlyish when Eric mentions to Albrecht about staying with Shelley the whole time she was in the hospital and Albrecht saying she held on for 30 hours, then they go back to it with Eric telling Albrecht "What you kept in here saved me"
This movie is a classic and I enjoy seeing people discovering it for the first time. One of my favorite parts is when Eric has flashbacks of him and Shelly. Especially when they are together outside of the city among the flowers. That scene alone is shot so beautifully.
Definitely not a horror movie in the true sense. It was sad that Brandon was killed filming this movie. The other sad thing was the other actor who actually pulled the trigger. Michael Masse was quoted as saying he was never the same and never got over it (not verbatim). He was also the manager of the underground shop in Se7en. Thanks guys
The sequel being "The Crow - City of Angels"? Yeah, that film is an example of how studio meddling can butcher a film, because the film that hit theaters is not the film that director Tim Pope made. The studio, Miramax (yeah, that asshole Harvey Weinstein) wanted to cash in on the popularity of the original. However, Tim Pope and writer David S. Goyer set out to make the best film he could, even with studio interference. He delivered a final cut of the film that he was pleased with, and that had tested well with audiences. However, what he had made was a film that had a very, very different tone than the original, and a very heartbreaking ending. However, Weinstein wanted something more like the first film, and decided to completely re-edit it, removing scenes, changing scenes around, and removing at least 30 minutes of footage, knocking the film down to a mere 86 minutes in length. It was so bad, that Pope and Goyer essentially disowned the theatrical release of the film. To make matters worse, when the film went to PPV, some of that cut footage was restored (most notably Kali's original death scene), but that version was still incomplete and has never been made available in any other format. If anyone has any interest in the film we were supposed to get, Chet Williamson's novelization is based directly off of the original script and screenplay.
My number 1 favorite movie of all time, one of my earliest memories watching a movie at a young age. Even watched the edited for TV version back then. Everything about the movie is perfect. From the directing, script, story, characters, actors, music, cinematography, and especially Brandon Lee who looked like he was having fun making this.
Alex Proyas directed two of my favorite movies of all time, this and Dark City. Roger Ebert was such a fan of Dark City he did the dvd commentary. It's a great watch /listen.
I'd have like to have seen the final battle in Dark City with a better budget bc it looks a little weird, but overall a great, very unique movie with a nice twist
yeah it's KIND OF a horror in that it has a handful of elements that are usually in horror movies (especially the supernatural/reanimation stuff and the actual kills) but it's more of a drama/romance/revenge story
There aren't many Brandon Lee films but if you wanted to watch more I recommend Rapid Fire and Showdown in Little Tokyo fits in the 90s action genre you've already explored.
There was one gem he filmed in Hong Kong, in fact his first movie. ‘Legacy of Rage (1986)’. Nice action and martial arts while also having appearances from a recognizable actor that’s been on this channel a number of times ….

I really love the juxtaposition between the dark and gritty film noir style of this movie with the ultimately hopeful messaging/ending as experienced particularly through the character of Sarah and epitomised by the line, "It can't rain all the time." Great film.
It's funny because I did a whole paper/presentation on this film in college. It kind of works as an inverse monster movie. Also, I'm sure everyone has posted this in the comments. But here's what happened. It was a horrible mistake that ended in tragedy. This film used a gun (a revolver) in several different scenes. In ONE scene there was a prop bullet put into the chamber to make it look like the gun was loaded with real ammunition. The prop bullet had no powder. It was a "dummy bullet." But, part of that dummy bullet broke off and lodged in the barrel of the gun. Later, during a scene where the gun was going to be fired with blanks in it, the gun barrel wasn't properly checked. So the blank fired when it was pointed at Brandon and that fragment of a prop bullet functioned as a real bullet and struck Brandon in the chest. It was fatal.
Still one of my all time favorite movies. The comic was written by James O'Barr as a way for him to deal with the loss of his fiance who was killed by a drunk driver. The person who killed Brandon was Funboy, it really messed him up for a long time.
This movie is based on the comic of the same name from James O'Barr. After his girlfriend was killed by a drunk driver, he began writing his thoughts down into as a way to deal with the anger and depression. One day he came across a newspaper article about a couple that were murdered over a $20 engagement ring and figured that could be the focal point of a story, so he merged the two events and developed them into the Crow. After trying to sell the story to several publishers and being routinely rejected, it sat dormant for 7 years until it was finally picked up and published in 1989. On the movie, the production crew rigged their own "dummy" cartridges to be used in a close-up shot for an earlier scene which were not completely removed from the gun when blank rounds were later added for the scene with Brandon Lee. The obstruction caused the blank to be discharged at a similar velocity as a regular bullet, which lead to his accidental death. Originally, the movie was intended to be a direct-to-video release and the studio producing the film almost cancelled production outright, but decided to continue as only three more days worth of scenes for Brandon Lee were planned to be shot. The movie went on hiatus as some of the story was re-written (mostly by 3 writers from the TV series Law & Order, interestingly enough) and then returned to production with other actors doubling for Lee. Paramount dropped out of distributing the film, but Miramax stepped in and gave them an additional $8 million dollars to finish the movie. O'Barr thought working on the comic would be an exercise to help finally put him at ease, but found that each page only made him angrier. After Brandon Lee was killed, he initially regretted ever having written the comic since his death felt like reliving his fiancée death all over again. Sorry to be a downer. On the positive side, O'Barr did ultimately get married and have a son.
I was a big Brandon Lee fan for a few years before this movie came out. He was very charismatic as well as being a very good martial artist (not surprising considering his dad was Bruce Lee). Such a tragedy that his first "big" Hollywood movie would result in his death. If you'd like to watch another couple of his films I'd recommend "Showdown in Little Tokyo" and "Rapid Fire"
The Crow was John Wick and The Matrix before John Wick and the Matrix. Not only was Brandon Lee the original first choice for Neo, but Chad, the director/ creator of John Wick was also in this film as Lee's stunt double. The two had been friends for years, as Chad is a student of one of Bruce Lee's senior students, Sifu/ Guro Dan Inosanto. After Brandon was shot on set, Chad actually finished the film for Brandon.
I remember being a teen flipping through channels looking for something to watch and finding this movie. This is where I found my love for this style, the colors, Music and the whole feel. I remember Sara's haircut being popular. The back of the head being shaved. Lol

Around 90% of the filming was completed when the accident happened that cost Brandon Lee his life. The accident happened filming his death scene at the apartment. After the investigations completed and the production resumed they reshot the death scene/Eric going back to his apartment transforming into The Crow. A brief CGI face was placed and a body double was used (That body double was Brandon’s friend Chad Stahelski, a stuntman at the time who would later on be a film director, notably the ‘John Wick’ movies)

While he did live on the rest of his life (passed away 2016) getting married, having children and continued acting….he lived on a disturbed and traumatized man. I feel horrible for the guy.
Brandon was killed during the Fun Boy shot. The prop department ran out of blanks and went to a real pawn shop to buy live ammo. They were supposed to remove the heads of the bullets. But one was not removed and got lodged in the barrel during the pawn shop reshoots. For the shot with Fun Boy shooting Eric, Proyas wanted a large explosion to come out of the gun. So, a blank was loaded into the gun with the lodged round. The blank was packed with extra gun powder for a more cinematic shot. This, however, dislodged the jammed round and forced it into Brandon Lee. At first, the crew thought Brandon was acting shot until they saw the pooling blood. It was because of the delay that he died. He was rushed by ambulance, but he had lost too much blood before paramedics got to him. Proyas, the director, went to a dark place and thought about quitting the movie business afterwards. He blamed himself, though it was the production company that urged the prop department to use the live ammunition without the knowledge of the director. His next movie was Dark City. If you watch this there are two versions. I would suggest watching the theatrical first, then the director's cut (of Dark City). The movie (The Crow) is based on the graphic novel of the same name by James O. Barr. There are call backs to certain parts of the comic, but some parts that were more violent in the source material. For example, Eric originally got his boots back after cutting off Tin Tin's legs with a sword. There were sequel movies that didn't live up to the success of the first movie, no pun intended. There are also sequel comics, which were far better than the sequel movies. A reboot is planned with the actor who played Pennywise as Eric. I am hoping for a more faithful adaptation, though I enjoyed the Brandon Lee movie.

I was laying in bed listening to the radio when they announced his death. I am a HUGE Bruce lee fan so this really hit me. My first thought was how I feel so bad for his mother Linda.
Michael Wincott who played main villain Top Dollar plays numerous villains onscreen including the evil Guy Of Gisbourne in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves and is cousin of Sheriff Of Nottingham played by the late Alan Rickman the adversary of Robin Hood. Michael Wincott was a bad guy in Along Came A Spider as well going against Morgan Freeman
He was also Count Rochefort in "The Three Musketeers" with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt. And actually played a kind of good guy in Alien Resurrection as the Mercenary captain.
Don’t forget the Warden in The Count of Monte Cristo. Yeah, basically we’re all in agreement on this: Michael Wincott is an awesome and seriously under appreciated actor.

It's based on a comic. The comic is inspired by the poem The Raven of Edgar Allan Poe which tells the story of a raven (a close relative of the crow) as the animal that brings souls to the next world and can bring them back from it. The comic (and the movie) talk about a musician that gets killed along with his gf by a gang of thugs on halloween and his soul comes back in his body a year later with almost godlike powers to exert revenge on the perpetrators. First, it isn't exactly a 'horror' movie though it does have elements of that. Samantha is right it does mix genres, horror, gothic, thriller, action. Let's talk about Brandon Lee's performance. Superb and I'm pretty sure both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger saw the movie and were in some way influenced by it for The Dark Knight and the Joker portrayal. About the accident, it was during filming, in the scene of the home invasion (that specific scene was of course, cut from the film out of respect). In the scene, funboy shoots Lee with the .44 as he comes back home with the groceries. For the few scenes left that needed Brandon Lee, a double was used. What happened is that prior to this, the gun was used for shooting practice (with real ammo) and one of the bullet was defective and a piece of it got stuck in the barrel. Later the same gun was used for the scene and loaded with blanks. Blank cartridges do have a bit of powder, to produce the explosion that gives the sound of shooting, but no bullets. The problem is that whoever loaded the gun did not check it correctly, they just checked if the chambers were empty and a correct check is to also look through the barrel to make sure nothing is in it. If someone had done this simple check that takes two seconds, Brandon Lee would still be alive. So when the actor playing funboy (Michael Massee) shot the blank, the explosion dislodged the piece of bullet that was stuck in the barrel and that piece of bullet went through Lee's abdomen and caused internal bleeding. It took some time for the crew to understand what had happened and he died in the hospital from blood loss. RIP.
Brandon Lee was killed in the scene where he was shot out the window (I believe). There was a bullet lodged in the chamber and the blank shot it out and killed him. So sad. They finished the movie with some scenes digitally spliced from existing footage. There's a short scene when he's first going into his building and before he opens his door, that scene is spliced from another one earlier. With his dad being Bruce Lee, there was a lot of talk of a curse or something with his family as his dad had died mysteriously. Just so sad. Thanks for reacting! When you said the movie is like a comic book I got the biggest, stupidest grin on my face - it's based off the famous graphic novel by James O'Barr! When it comes to The Crow I've seen all the movies (sadly, they only get worse from here tho the music is still good) and read all the books, even watched the spin off t.v. show with Marc Decascos. Since everyone is quoting their fav lines I'll put mine: Albrecht: Don't move, you move you're dead... Eric: I say I'm dead, and I move.
There is no doubt that this movie was been requested. It is the epitomy of superhero movies before they were the craze. Brandon Lee died during its production and the atmosphere surrounding its development was always gritty and sleazy. I remember one person on set sneezed and Brandon replied " Well, there goes $50". Since drug use and stupidity was rampant on set, it ultimately changed the way movie sets monitored their casts and crew. Too bad they never did it sooner. This is the best comic book adaptation ever put on screen and it deserves more recognition than it gets from just a cult following. Some folks classify this as horror but it's more film noir/fantasy than anything but I'm glad you finally checked this out and I love your reactions. Cherish this movie always as I have, because it will go down in history as one of the greatest movies ever. Cheers!!!
The Crow is a comic book, based in Detroit, and written by James O'Barr. Devil's Night is a Detroit tradition of starting fires the night before Halloween. Eric Draven is a revenant, not a demon or zombie. Brandon was killed on the set, after being shot by the actor who plays Funboy. There was a dummy round in the barrel of the gun, and the armorer was sent home early, and the prop assistant neglected to check the weapon, before handing it to the actor. The combination of the metal obstructing the barrel and the round in the chamber, caused the bullet to be fired into Brandon's abdomen as if from a live round from a .44. He died from the wound, later that day. Brandon's stunt double, Chad Stahelski, who also doubled for Keanu in the Matrix films, and then went on to direct the John Wick films, completed Brandon's scenes. The film was a hit, and made Brandon Lee a legend. Detroit has plans to put a statue of Eric Draven, in Brandon's likeness, in the downtown area.
The movie is an Adaptation of a Comics. The Comics artist was iirc a Marine who lost his wife/fiancée in a car accident. Not knowing how to deal with the grief and his suicidal thoughts, he started drawing and writting. The process became his catharsis and it birthed The Crow. This is why behind the revenge and dark plot, it is at its core, about Love for the departed and the Pain we feel at their departure.
I was in high school when this came out and was obsessed. I saw it twice in the theater, bought the graphic novel, the soundtrack, a hat, some art on a metal plate, a hat. I met the author and had him sign my hat and book. Funny thing is, it was in a mall book signing and this guy smoked like a chimney, he had an overflowing ashtray on his table. That was clearly back when you could still smoke in the mall.
I really like the stylized adaptation that they managed to pull off with this film. I was very impressed when I first saw it, and I'd watch it every time it aired on television. Since you both enjoyed it you might also like Sin City (2005), which is even more heavily stylized to match its source material.
a few months after the tragedy of Brandon Lee, Luc Besson's "Leon: The Professional" (1994) was already in production and since 12-year-old Nathalie Portman handled so many guns in the plot, her parents hired a weapons expert to teach her how to be safe with extreme prejudice, assembling and disassembling parts, telling the difference between bullets and blanks and even checking the weight of loaded and unloaded guns! it can't rain all the time... Brandon Lee is now an angel in peace and the crow brought back his name to immortality!
Myca (Bai Ling's character) and Top Dollar (Michael Wincott's character) are half-siblings. Their father was a Vietnam veteran, hence Myca's Asian appearance and the twisted 5th birthday present given to Top Dollar. He was meant to have been a sociopath prior to the war and a complete psychopath afterward, which led to the half-siblings growing up with no morals.

Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved. The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film. On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets. In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him. O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place. In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that”. Massee died on 20th October 2016 & right up until he passes away, had never watched the film. Another cast member impacted by Lee’s death was Rochelle Davis who played Sarah. Davis struggled with mental health & substance abuse in the years following the films release; on top of which she spent a period of time homeless. From following her social media, she’s turned her life around & is now making occasional appearances at various conventions. Also, The Cure, who composed the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film, up until only a few years back refused to play it out of respect. After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge. Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well. It’s also worth noting Chad Stahelski went on to direct John Wick; & has Lee not died, I’m very much under the impression that Stahelski would’ve cast his good friend into the role.
This is one of those movies i've seen millions of times on tape, but decades later hd tvs come out and then its available to watch in hd and its almost like a new movie. being able to see everything so clear and rich in colors felt like the first time again, made it even more amazing : D
The actor who plays Funboy is the one who actually shot Brandon Lee. His death was a result of a series of unfortunate events. On a movie set there is prop ammunition ( this is ammunition that looks like live ammo but has no powder charge or primer) and blanks ( These are self explanatory). Anyway, they needed more prop ammo for Funboy's .44 magnum handgun so someone bought live ammo, separated the bullets out, emptied the powder and reseated the bullets. This person failed to remove the primers. Primers are like caps for a toy gun the are seated in the rear of the cartridge and what the hammer strikes to ignite the powder charge. At one point during filming someone pull the trigger on Funboy's gun on one of these prop rounds and the primer went off. Nothing was suppose to happen so the gun was inspected and they all thought it was a blank round. What they didn't notice was that the primer had enough pressure to shoot the bullet out of the cartridge and it stopped in the barrel. Blank rounds were loaded into the gun for a scene where Funboy was suppose to shoot Eric in the chest. Michael Massee, the actor playing Funboy, pulled the trigger, the blank round went off and the pressure from the round had enough force to send the bullet out of the barrel and it hit Brandon in the chest. It was a very unfortunate accident but also very preventable if they had followed safety procedures.
I saw this in the theater back in 1994 and didn't think much of it, but over the years it grew on me, and now is one of my top 10 movies of all time. I love the music, the atmosphere, and the style.
A little trivia about devils night is, that it's an actual night that existed in Detroit for many years. The people would set fire to abandoned buildings around the city.
This is my favorite movie. I dress up as the Crow every Halloween and it is for a very specific reason. I am a hopeful romantic and I love the idea that if my true love was wronged so much that even if I was dead I could come back and get justice. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Such a great, entertaining movie. It was the perfect movie to see as a moody teenager, and it never gets old. If I remember correctly, Chad Stahlski (I think I spelled that right) of The Matrix and John Wick films, finished some of the rooftop scenes after Brandon Lee died, and may have been his stunt double, too. And I highly recommend "Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil". It's entertaining as hell!
The comic book "The Crow" was author James O' Barr's way of working through the death of his fiancee killed by a drunk driver. It was made into a graphic novel and finally the movie with Brandon Lee. Powerful stuff and very creative way of working through your grief.

This was originally a Graphic Novel, by J O'Barr, Who lost his fiance' in a car accident, and his doing this graphic novel was his way of coming to terms with it. He was against there being a movie, but Brandon helped convince him, which makes his death on the set even more tragic.
Unfortunately Brandon's death made him wish he had never written the comic book, as he partly blamed himself for starting the chain of events that led to such a tragic outcome.

He wanted revenge on his way home from military service, but learned that the driver had died of natural causes.
Consumed by impossible revenge and the terrible sadness of having lost the woman he loved so much. So he dedicated himself to making a comic book, pouring all his pain into it.
The Crow was born. That's why this work is so touching.
It’s based on a comic, that has since become a graphic novel. I can’t recommend it enough. The connection between him and the crow is amazing, in the book.

Peak 90’s Gothic nihilism!! One of the best soundtracks of the 90’s without a doubt! Alex Proyas (the Direcor) also made another great stylized movie called “Dark City” which I highly recommend!

The stuntman for Brandon Lee on this film was Chad Stahelski. Chad would later direct all the John Wick films and he also was the stuntman for Keanu in the Matrix. They also had to CGI Brandons Lee's face onto Chad Stahelski body to finish the film.

It wasnt just the pain Shelley had that he had to endure, it was also what the guys did to her to cause the pain. The humiliation, the beating, and the rape. He felt it all.
The "thirty hours of pain..." was just the hospital stuff. They address that earlyish when Eric mentions to Albrecht about staying with Shelley the whole time she was in the hospital and Albrecht saying she held on for 30 hours, then they go back to it with Eric telling Albrecht "What you kept in here saved me"
This movie is a classic and I enjoy seeing people discovering it for the first time. One of my favorite parts is when Eric has flashbacks of him and Shelly. Especially when they are together outside of the city among the flowers. That scene alone is shot so beautifully.
Brandon Lee would've been a superstar.

T Bird was played by David Patrick Kelly who also played the infamous Luther in the ultra classic film, “The Warriors”. Super worth a watch too.

It was sad that Brandon was killed filming this movie. The other sad thing was the other actor who actually pulled the trigger. Michael Masse was quoted as saying he was never the same and never got over it (not verbatim). He was also the manager of the underground shop in Se7en.

There weren't 4 movies, and there wasn't a TV series called Stairway to Heaven. They didn't exist.
City of Angels is actually pretty good and I like the connection to the first. The 4th is entertaining if you watch it as a comedy.
The sequel being "The Crow - City of Angels"? Yeah, that film is an example of how studio meddling can butcher a film, because the film that hit theaters is not the film that director Tim Pope made.
The studio, Miramax (yeah, that asshole Harvey Weinstein) wanted to cash in on the popularity of the original. However, Tim Pope and writer David S. Goyer set out to make the best film he could, even with studio interference. He delivered a final cut of the film that he was pleased with, and that had tested well with audiences. However, what he had made was a film that had a very, very different tone than the original, and a very heartbreaking ending.
However, Weinstein wanted something more like the first film, and decided to completely re-edit it, removing scenes, changing scenes around, and removing at least 30 minutes of footage, knocking the film down to a mere 86 minutes in length. It was so bad, that Pope and Goyer essentially disowned the theatrical release of the film.
To make matters worse, when the film went to PPV, some of that cut footage was restored (most notably Kali's original death scene), but that version was still incomplete and has never been made available in any other format.
If anyone has any interest in the film we were supposed to get, Chet Williamson's novelization is based directly off of the original script and screenplay.

My number 1 favorite movie of all time, one of my earliest memories watching a movie at a young age. Even watched the edited for TV version back then. Everything about the movie is perfect. From the directing, script, story, characters, actors, music, cinematography, and especially Brandon Lee who looked like he was having fun making this.
It's a fun film, but it is most certainly not "perfect".

yeah it's KIND OF a horror in that it has a handful of elements that are usually in horror movies (especially the supernatural/reanimation stuff and the actual kills) but it's more of a drama/romance/revenge story
There aren't many Brandon Lee films but if you wanted to watch more I recommend Rapid Fire and Showdown in Little Tokyo fits in the 90s action genre you've already explored.
There was one gem he filmed in Hong Kong, in fact his first movie. ‘Legacy of Rage (1986)’. Nice action and martial arts while also having appearances from a recognizable actor that’s been on this channel a number of times ….

I really love the juxtaposition between the dark and gritty film noir style of this movie with the ultimately hopeful messaging/ending as experienced particularly through the character of Sarah and epitomised by the line, "It can't rain all the time." Great film.
It's funny because I did a whole paper/presentation on this film in college. It kind of works as an inverse monster movie.
Also, I'm sure everyone has posted this in the comments. But here's what happened. It was a horrible mistake that ended in tragedy.
This film used a gun (a revolver) in several different scenes. In ONE scene there was a prop bullet put into the chamber to make it look like the gun was loaded with real ammunition. The prop bullet had no powder. It was a "dummy bullet." But, part of that dummy bullet broke off and lodged in the barrel of the gun. Later, during a scene where the gun was going to be fired with blanks in it, the gun barrel wasn't properly checked. So the blank fired when it was pointed at Brandon and that fragment of a prop bullet functioned as a real bullet and struck Brandon in the chest. It was fatal.
I saw this as a kid and we named our first puppy a rottweiler Brandon Lee. I love this movie. And Samantha you are just the sweetest woman.
My favorite film. Brandon became the embodiment of The Crow. One of the best performances in film. So very sad that he passed away.
The comic book this was based on was hauntingly beautiful. It's in graphic novel form now. Worth checking out. It's poetic

Still one of my all time favorite movies. The comic was written by James O'Barr as a way for him to deal with the loss of his fiance who was killed by a drunk driver. The person who killed Brandon was Funboy, it really messed him up for a long time.
This movie is based on the comic of the same name from James O'Barr. After his girlfriend was killed by a drunk driver, he began writing his thoughts down into as a way to deal with the anger and depression. One day he came across a newspaper article about a couple that were murdered over a $20 engagement ring and figured that could be the focal point of a story, so he merged the two events and developed them into the Crow. After trying to sell the story to several publishers and being routinely rejected, it sat dormant for 7 years until it was finally picked up and published in 1989.
On the movie, the production crew rigged their own "dummy" cartridges to be used in a close-up shot for an earlier scene which were not completely removed from the gun when blank rounds were later added for the scene with Brandon Lee. The obstruction caused the blank to be discharged at a similar velocity as a regular bullet, which lead to his accidental death.
Originally, the movie was intended to be a direct-to-video release and the studio producing the film almost cancelled production outright, but decided to continue as only three more days worth of scenes for Brandon Lee were planned to be shot. The movie went on hiatus as some of the story was re-written (mostly by 3 writers from the TV series Law & Order, interestingly enough) and then returned to production with other actors doubling for Lee. Paramount dropped out of distributing the film, but Miramax stepped in and gave them an additional $8 million dollars to finish the movie.
O'Barr thought working on the comic would be an exercise to help finally put him at ease, but found that each page only made him angrier. After Brandon Lee was killed, he initially regretted ever having written the comic since his death felt like reliving his fiancée death all over again.
Sorry to be a downer. On the positive side, O'Barr did ultimately get married and have a son.

I was a big Brandon Lee fan for a few years before this movie came out. He was very charismatic as well as being a very good martial artist (not surprising considering his dad was Bruce Lee). Such a tragedy that his first "big" Hollywood movie would result in his death. If you'd like to watch another couple of his films I'd recommend "Showdown in Little Tokyo" and "Rapid Fire"
The Crow was John Wick and The Matrix before John Wick and the Matrix. Not only was Brandon Lee the original first choice for Neo, but Chad, the director/ creator of John Wick was also in this film as Lee's stunt double. The two had been friends for years, as Chad is a student of one of Bruce Lee's senior students, Sifu/ Guro Dan Inosanto. After Brandon was shot on set, Chad actually finished the film for Brandon.

Around 90% of the filming was completed when the accident happened that cost Brandon Lee his life. The accident happened filming his death scene at the apartment. After the investigations completed and the production resumed they reshot the death scene/Eric going back to his apartment transforming into The Crow. A brief CGI face was placed and a body double was used (That body double was Brandon’s friend Chad Stahelski, a stuntman at the time who would later on be a film director, notably the ‘John Wick’ movies)

From what I remember the prop gun had a bullet stuck in the barrel, when a blank was fired in it, it pushed the stuck round out, striking Brandon.
Brandon was killed during the Fun Boy shot. The prop department ran out of blanks and went to a real pawn shop to buy live ammo. They were supposed to remove the heads of the bullets. But one was not removed and got lodged in the barrel during the pawn shop reshoots.
For the shot with Fun Boy shooting Eric, Proyas wanted a large explosion to come out of the gun. So, a blank was loaded into the gun with the lodged round. The blank was packed with extra gun powder for a more cinematic shot. This, however, dislodged the jammed round and forced it into Brandon Lee. At first, the crew thought Brandon was acting shot until they saw the pooling blood. It was because of the delay that he died. Proyas, the director, went to a dark place and thought about quitting the movie business afterwards. He blamed himself, though it was the production company that urged the prop department to use the live ammunition without the knowledge of the director. His next movie was Dark City. If you watch this there are two versions. I would suggest watching the theatrical first, then the director's cut (of Dark City).
The movie (The Crow) is based on the graphic novel of the same name by James O. Barr. There are call backs to certain parts of the comic, but some parts that were more violent in the source material. For example, Eric originally got his boots back after cutting off Tin Tin's legs with a sword. There were sequel movies that didn't live up to the success of the first movie, no pun intended. There are also sequel comics, which were far better than the sequel movies.
A reboot is planned with the actor who played Pennywise as Eric. I am hoping for a more faithful adaptation, though I enjoyed the Brandon Lee movie.

I love they mention it feels like a Dark Comic book, since that is how The Crow started out. A man making a comic to work through his own pain.
Well remember the Dark Knight when the Joker walks into the room with the mob bosses, they say it was an homage to the scene when Eric walks into the room with the crime bosses.
I was laying in bed listening to the radio when they announced his death. I am a HUGE Bruce lee fan so this really hit me. My first thought was how I feel so bad for his mother Linda.
Brandon had such a bright future, this movie is tragic for that reason alone.
Michael Wincott who played main villain Top Dollar plays numerous villains onscreen including the evil Guy Of Gisbourne in Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves and is cousin of Sheriff Of Nottingham played by the late Alan Rickman the adversary of Robin Hood. Michael Wincott was a bad guy in Along Came A Spider as well going against Morgan Freeman
He was also Count Rochefort in "The Three Musketeers" with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt. And actually played a kind of good guy in Alien Resurrection as the Mercenary captain.
Don’t forget the Warden in The Count of Monte Cristo. Yeah, basically we’re all in agreement on this: Michael Wincott is an awesome and seriously under appreciated actor.

The comic is inspired by the poem The Raven of Edgar Allan Poe which tells the story of a raven (a close relative of the crow) as the animal that brings souls to the next world and can bring them back from it.
The comic (and the movie) talk about a musician that gets killed along with his gf by a gang of thugs on halloween and his soul comes back in his body a year later with almost godlike powers to exert revenge on the perpetrators.
First, it isn't exactly a 'horror' movie though it does have elements of that. Samantha is right it does mix genres, horror, gothic, thriller, action.
Let's talk about Brandon Lee's performance. Superb and I'm pretty sure both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger saw the movie and were in some way influenced by it for The Dark Knight and the Joker portrayal.
About the accident, it was during filming, in the scene of the home invasion (that specific scene was of course, cut from the film out of respect). In the scene, funboy shoots Lee with the .44 as he comes back home with the groceries. For the few scenes left that needed Brandon Lee, a double was used.
What happened is that prior to this, the gun was used for shooting practice (with real ammo) and one of the bullet was defective and a piece of it got stuck in the barrel.
Later the same gun was used for the scene and loaded with blanks. Blank cartridges do have a bit of powder, to produce the explosion that gives the sound of shooting, but no bullets.
The problem is that whoever loaded the gun did not check it correctly, they just checked if the chambers were empty and a correct check is to also look through the barrel to make sure nothing is in it.
If someone had done this simple check that takes two seconds, Brandon Lee would still be alive.
So when the actor playing funboy (Michael Massee) shot the blank, the explosion dislodged the piece of bullet that was stuck in the barrel and that piece of bullet went through Lee's abdomen and caused internal bleeding.
It took some time for the crew to understand what had happened and he died in the hospital from blood loss.
RIP.
Brandon Lee was killed in the scene where he was shot out the window (I believe). There was a bullet lodged in the chamber and the blank shot it out and killed him. So sad. They finished the movie with some scenes digitally spliced from existing footage. There's a short scene when he's first going into his building and before he opens his door, that scene is spliced from another one earlier. With his dad being Bruce Lee, there was a lot of talk of a curse or something with his family as his dad had died mysteriously. Just so sad. Thanks for reacting! Really a great, stylized adaptation of the graphic novel.

When it comes to The Crow I've seen all the movies (sadly, they only get worse from here tho the music is still good) and read all the books, even watched the spin off t.v. show with Marc Decascos.

There is no doubt that this movie was been requested. It is the epitomy of superhero movies before they were the craze. Brandon Lee died during its production and the atmosphere surrounding its development was always gritty and sleazy. I remember one person on set sneezed and Brandon replied " Well, there goes $50". Since drug use and stupidity was rampant on set, it ultimately changed the way movie sets monitored their casts and crew. Too bad they never did it sooner. This is the best comic book adaptation ever put on screen and it deserves more recognition than it gets from just a cult following. Some folks classify this as horror but it's more film noir/fantasy than anything but I'm glad you finally checked this out and I love your reactions. Cherish this movie always as I have, because it will go down in history as one of the greatest movies ever. Cheers!!!

The Crow is a comic book, based in Detroit, and written by James O'Barr. Devil's Night is a Detroit tradition of starting fires the night before Halloween. Eric Draven is a revenant, not a demon or zombie. Brandon was killed on the set, after being shot by the actor who plays Funboy. There was a dummy round in the barrel of the gun, and the armorer was sent home early, and the prop assistant neglected to check the weapon, before handing it to the actor. The combination of the metal obstructing the barrel and the round in the chamber, caused the bullet to be fired into Brandon's abdomen as if from a live round from a .44. He died from the wound, later that day. Brandon's stunt double, Chad Stahelski, who also doubled for Keanu in the Matrix films, and then went on to direct the John Wick films, completed Brandon's scenes. The film was a hit, and made Brandon Lee a legend. Detroit has plans to put a statue of Eric Draven, in Brandon's likeness, in the downtown area.

Not knowing how to deal with the grief and his suicidal thoughts, he started drawing and writting.
The process became his catharsis and it birthed The Crow.
This is why behind the revenge and dark plot, it is at its core, about Love for the departed and the Pain we feel at their departure.
I was in high school when this came out and was obsessed. I saw it twice in the theater, bought the graphic novel, the soundtrack, a hat, some art on a metal plate, a hat. I met the author and had him sign my hat and book. Funny thing is, it was in a mall book signing and this guy smoked like a chimney, he had an overflowing ashtray on his table. That was clearly back when you could still smoke in the mall.
I really like the stylized adaptation that they managed to pull off with this film. I was very impressed when I first saw it, and I'd watch it every time it aired on television. Since you both enjoyed it you might also like Sin City (2005), which is even more heavily stylized to match its source material.
a few months after the tragedy of Brandon Lee, Luc Besson's "Leon: The Professional" (1994) was already in production and since 12-year-old Nathalie Portman handled so many guns in the plot, her parents hired a weapons expert to teach her how to be safe with extreme prejudice, assembling and disassembling parts, telling the difference between bullets and blanks and even checking the weight of loaded and unloaded guns! it can't rain all the time... Brandon Lee is now an angel in peace and the crow brought back his name to immortality!

Myca (Bai Ling's character) and Top Dollar (Michael Wincott's character) are half-siblings. Their father was a Vietnam veteran, hence Myca's Asian appearance and the twisted 5th birthday present given to Top Dollar. He was meant to have been a sociopath prior to the war and a complete psychopath afterward, which led to the half-siblings growing up with no morals.

My friends and I watched it every Sunday for about 3 years. Religiously. As in part of a ritual of watching Dazed and Confused, The Big Lebowski, and The Crow after our softball game, or after football was over. That’s 150 right there. That leaves five times a year for 30 years on my own. Not hard to do. I used to have it on repeat at my house, just for the music. Same with The Matrix, or Pulp Fiction. My VCR had automatic rewind and autoplay.

Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved.
The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film.
On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets.
In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him.
O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place.
In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that”. Massee died on 20th October 2016 & right up until he passes away, had never watched the film.
Another cast member impacted by Lee’s death was Rochelle Davis who played Sarah. Davis struggled with mental health & substance abuse in the years following the films release; on top of which she spent a period of time homeless. From following her social media, she’s turned her life around & is now making occasional appearances at various conventions.
Also, The Cure, who composed the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film, up until only a few years back refused to play it out of respect.
After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge.
Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well.
It’s also worth noting Chad Stahelski went on to direct John Wick; & has Lee not died, I’m very much under the impression that Stahelski would’ve cast his good friend into the role.

This is one of those movies i've seen millions of times on tape, but decades later hd tvs come out and then its available to watch in hd and its almost like a new movie. being able to see everything so clear and rich in colors felt like the first time again, made it even more amazing : D

1st! At the height of grunge music and 1990s darkness this movie is a PERFECT moment in time.
The actor who plays Funboy is the one who actually shot Brandon Lee. His death was a result of a series of unfortunate events. On a movie set there is prop ammunition ( this is ammunition that looks like live ammo but has no powder charge or primer) and blanks ( These are self explanatory). Anyway, they needed more prop ammo for Funboy's .44 magnum handgun so someone bought live ammo, separated the bullets out, emptied the powder and reseated the bullets. This person failed to remove the primers. Primers are like caps for a toy gun the are seated in the rear of the cartridge and what the hammer strikes to ignite the powder charge. At one point during filming someone pull the trigger on Funboy's gun on one of these prop rounds and the primer went off. Nothing was suppose to happen so the gun was inspected and they all thought it was a blank round. What they didn't notice was that the primer had enough pressure to shoot the bullet out of the cartridge and it stopped in the barrel. Blank rounds were loaded into the gun for a scene where Funboy was suppose to shoot Eric in the chest. Michael Massee, the actor playing Funboy, pulled the trigger, the blank round went off and the pressure from the round had enough force to send the bullet out of the barrel and it hit Brandon in the chest. It was a very unfortunate accident but also very preventable if they had followed safety procedures.
I saw this in the theater back in 1994 and didn't think much of it, but over the years it grew on me, and now is one of my top 10 movies of all time. I love the music, the atmosphere, and the style.
I just love the Crow teaching Darla what it means to be a Mother scene; I could watch it 10,000 times.

A little trivia about devils night is, that it's an actual night that existed in Detroit for many years. The people would set fire to abandoned buildings around the city.
This is my favorite movie. I dress up as the Crow every Halloween and it is for a very specific reason. I am a hopeful romantic and I love the idea that if my true love was wronged so much that even if I was dead I could come back and get justice. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Such a great, entertaining movie. It was the perfect movie to see as a moody teenager, and it never gets old. If I remember correctly, Chad Stahlski (I think I spelled that right) of The Matrix and John Wick films, finished some of the rooftop scenes after Brandon Lee died, and may have been his stunt double, too.
And I highly recommend "Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil". It's entertaining as hell!

The comic book "The Crow" was author James O' Barr's way of working through the death of his fiancee killed by a drunk driver. It was made into a graphic novel and finally the movie with Brandon Lee. Powerful stuff and very creative way of working through your grief.
To answer your question as to what exactly Eric was,he was an Angel,i remember on the poster and the trailers the tagline was,"believe in angles"the way he threw the rings at gedeon while explaining all the lives he destroyed, the way he took out Darla's heroin and told her to take care of her daughter,he was a guardian angel for everyone he encountered that was good,and fun fact the scene in the apartment when he meets the officer was completely improvised,saw this in theaters when i was 10 so it's one of my favorites,also Heath ledger's joker was inspired by Brandon's performance

Brandon Lee starred in a more conventional action movie with Powers Boothe (Red Dawn [1984], Tombstone [1993]) called Rapid Fire (1992). It's been a while since I've watched it, but I remember it being pretty good. The tagline is "unarmed and extremely dangerous."
