This drama taught me that a man's love can be fleeting. He may have been head over heels as a teenager and fought for his love for Ruyi with all his might, but ambition and lust for other women led him to abandon her. Hence, just because someone loves you now doesn't mean that love will last forever.
I think the real problem relies on the fact that 1. Hongli quite literally had the power of life and death over her which makes their relationship have a wild power imbalance in and of itself and 2. Ruyi physically could never leave him (as it was quite literally illegal), which make the possibility of losing her nonexistent in his eyes. I don´t think relationships nowadays can be compared as they don't fall under the same conditions.
This was a heartbreaking drama Ruryi was the only one who did genuinely love him without motive, yet he used her and treated her so badly , she should’ve known from the time he didn’t pick her as his main wife when he was a prince ( although he allegedly loved her so much) that this was an indication of how he was going to treat her for the rest of her life!!!, he surrounded himself with so many women , he was disgusting, even his mother knew how loyal Ruryi was. In the end she didn’t want anything from him, she didn’t want to be empress, she didn’t want anything, she just wanted to die in piece. He realised her loyalty and love far too late after she died and he lived many many more years pining for her alone and miserable. Ruryi was a true Queen dignified until her last breath ❤

This is still one of my favorites, I could watch this so many times. He treated her soooo terribly. And treated the ones who use and plot against his children glamorously. These two just weren’t aligned. There was love but he wasn’t on her level in any regard. I loved Ruyi, her character is admirable. But Lings palace is so much darker than other women. I feel that was symbolic in a way. That Ling and the Emperor share the same darkness within. Choosing Ruyi would require him to move into the light. But his ego would never let him.
I despise this drama, the emperor treated her like trash through the entire drama. Heartbreaking to know women suffer because of men’s lack of confidence.
She should not cherish the emperor health, but she is too kind. She can choose to not care the emperor health till emperor death, force herself to be empress dowager with 5th prince as the king (because she is the 5th prince foster mother), but she is too kind.
Regardless of being the 5th Prince’s foster mother, she is the empress so automatically becomes empress dowager after the death of the emperor. There can be two empress dowagers at the same time. The former empress and the mother of the new emperor. The former has a higher position than the latter. Which was what Ruyi’s aunt wanted for herself but Zhen Huan wouldn’t allow that and had her poisoned to death.
And her very real worries and shitty feelings because of husband's mistreatment are depicted as " pregnancy mood swings" . 🙄 These are Gaslighting tactics .
Kneeling for a man that almost had u falling & bumping your head possibly getting a concussion or dying is CRAZY ! Worse in front a side chick house with your HUSBAND inside 😭
The comments on this drama is always about it being a very good drama but I can’t bring myself to watch it when the emperor just keeps treating her like trash. It hurts me. Although in the Yanxzi palace, the emperor didn’t like the step empress, he respected her and never treated her like crap. This drama just sets on my nerves because the step empress just went through a lot of hellholes and she died at the end
I agree, he had little to no respect for her, which leads other vicious forces to question her authority in the palace. Most empresses wouldn’t allow such behavior and even their family would throw a fit for them. Ruyi was alone tho. He knew that and took complete advantage, which is why he decided to take her as an empress anyway, not for love, but out of convenience of knowing that she would always be complicit. Having such a close relationship with the emperor is disrespectful to your person in itself, there’s a reason why you’re supposed to feel far from the emperors status, since they were childhood lovers, the dynamic between them was dysfunctional politically and socially, he doesn’t see her as the respectable empress that he should cherish and adore, which is why he also praised the previous emperor blatantly, even tho she schemed heavily against him and his harem.

This gave him a chance to be shitty towards her without repercussions
The emperor is an ass. He wants ruyi to always feel his so call pain. But he is cruel every which way. He really could care less bout his children. I feel he loves those idiot women fighting for his attention. Only ruyi won't go down that path.

She was always so weak. Would you keep a lame horse around? He didn't love her. When she passed, he missed her being around, trying to please him, like a dog you kick. But never loved her and I am sure the writers of the show would agree with me.
It’s one of the best historical dramas. Not going to be historically accurate because they take a lot of creative license but tell me if there was any historical novels that has been 100% accurate. There is none. Why? Because true history isn’t spicy enough for our jaded palate.
