I'm always happy to see Vincent Schiavelli (The Peddler in "Arsenal of Freedom") working. Same with Julia Nickson (Ensign T'su in "Arsenal of Freedom" and also Rambo's love interest in the second movie). It was good to see LaForge take command. But they have to do something about the Engineer of the Week. I thought it was strange to send the chief engineer away on the flying saucer rather than to keep him on task in battle. We saw Judson Scott as Joachim in "The Wrath of Khan", and he also had a very short-lived TV series called "The Phoenix". Always glad to see his work, too, but he's no longer doing TV or film, and he doesn't have a large body of work. Merritt Butrick played David Marcos, son of Kirk, in "The Wrath of Khan". Regretfully, he died from AIDS and taxoplasmosis 11 months after "Symbiosis" aired.
Not sure if you noticed that the actor who played Kirk's son David in The Wrath of Khan and the actor that played Khan's right-hand man Joachim were both in Symbiosis.
Arsenal of Freedom: Despite some poor writing, I like this one a lot. It has some nice battles in space and on planets. Patrick Stewart was unhappy about not getting a “piece of the action” and wanted more to do. I think this was the writers' way of satisfying that demand. Plus, it gives Geordi some major character development. I loved the speech Troi gave him in the ready room. Troi is getting better. Good writing. This is the beginning of a story arc of sorts for Geordi. The story of Crusher being strong under the pain is a nice touch and shows her professionalism. Gates and Stewart have great chemistry together, and I think the writers were finally noticing that. Crusher is the one that comes up with the simple solution. The grandmother thing will return. I think Gates also demanded better writing for her character as well, we’ll come back to that. I am torn on who is my favorite ST doctor. Is it the seasoned Dr. Crusher or the bright-eyed young doctor we haven’t met yet? Data jumping will return. Riker refusing a command will be a long-running arc and very important. A computer program that learns from its enemies and encases subjects to study, this WILL be important in the future. It would have been nice if Star Fleet learned more about this technology, just in case some larger enemies started messing with the Federation. What was Wil Wheaton doing? He isn’t in this episode.
Picard was a genius in this episode. And he was right. Yes, he’s violated the PD on some occasions, out of desperation (or if it was plausible for the plot and story). But he can’t violate it EVERY time. If the Enterprise hadn’t shown up, this would have happened anyway because they couldn’t fix the ship. They were only rendering assistance to a ship in need, to send it on its way. But not to get entangled in this. It was so ugly, Picard not only didn’t want to violate the PD, but he wanted nothing to do with those people. From a doctor’s POV, Beverly was right to “do no harm”, to help in need. But Picard made the right decision. And like I said before, it was genius.
Earlier Starships _Enterprise_ also were separable between the primary and secondary hulls; they just never got around to using the separation in a plot.
If you weren't one of my favourite reactors before, you are now! Everyone on the internet disparages Yar's dialogue to Wesley as a "80s just say no afterschool special" slock. But it was a very touching moment, and it teaches the audience, many of whom were impressionable tweens/teens in the 80s. It really is beneficial television unlike the immoral, foul languaged, violent fare that one usually sees. I'm glad you appreciated it too!
In the final scenes in the cargo bay, check the barrels - you will see Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) waving at the camera. You'll find out why next episode.
In Season one you are right there isn't a regular doing the job of Scotty. Don't worry, that gets sorted out eventually, and i'm pretty sure you will love the Chief Engineer when they get a regular one.
The Arsenal Of Freedom, episode 21, my #3 favorite of season 1. This show is what I call TNG homage to the old show. It did become my favorite until episode 25 in which cremated all past episodes and even all shows of season 2. When you get to season 3 and definitely 4, you will see the real TNG at its best!! This episode could compete with seasons 3 for sure. But episode 25, boom, melt, and a good snack is provided!!!
20:45 Well, Courtney, it gets set in stone in season 2, and I'm sure that you'll be pleased with ultimately lands that title (all I can say without revealing spoilers). Basically, during season 1,they'd had a revolving door of chief engineers, as the show was still getting it's footing
In Arsenal of Freedom, the space faring device that attacked the Enterprise WAS bigger. Think about it, the ones on the ground were 2 ft long at most-this was probably 1/4 the size of the Enterprise! (They just used the same prop which doesn't really take me out of the show because it is logical for the same design to be used on the infantry weapons and capital ship weapons)
Love your star trek videos. Its a funny irony you're wearing a shirt with the word Dominion on it, if you continue to watch the later star trek series you will eventually meet a species called The Dominion. Trekkies know what im talking about 😉
Every time I see you in an Old Dominion University shirt, I wonder whether you are a Virginian / live in Virginia. The years I spent living in Northern Virginia remain one of the happiest times of my life-during which we also made several visits to the Historic Triangle.
Rookies? no, Junior officers. You are right, they are not *as seasoned* but they were trained and need the experience and confidence. This is a good episode, I just wish they could have dismantled that device.
Excellent reaction. I’m glad you had fun with. This is these two episodes are classic. All surprised. The Picard didn’t think of buying it earlier than he did. Cause he knew as a salesman computer image so cause you want to sell. You wanna buy it that would stop the whole thing. I realize that early, but just a little bit earlier. It would’ve been nice. Thank goodness. Nobody died for the second episode with the drugs. Yes it’s all good now. People who watch this now and even then so that Wesley was too after school special which drug thing was too cliché for Star Trek, but I disagree. People learn a different levels somebody’s gonna get it and somebody’s gonna get the messages and somebody’s gonna understand it so I can learn from You get it. I’m sure others will too. They shouldn’t be so against the message. Tasha talked about it because in her planet, she might doubled into drugs to escape the rape gangs, and when there’s a little food, replace food drugs with food sometimes about my fun fact to John because electric hands, blonde guy that’s David Marcus Kirk‘s son from wrath of con he died shortly after this episode, though from cancer, unfortunately Thanks for the fun until next time.
I'm certainly not in favor of drug-abuse; but it annoys me every time to see how poorly written, preachy, and patronizing the dialogue is when Yar explains addiction to Wesley.
Hi, Courtney! You’re getting a to be a better Trekkie all the time, beautiful! I love, love, love you, Courtney! Sending you a sweet kiss, my love! 😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Brekian guy was Khan's main henchman in Wrath of Khan. The dude sick with plaque was the actor who played David, Kirk's son!
Saw notification, INSTANTLY stopped what I was watching because this will be better.
Same lol
Love it!
Me too!

8:08 - "File a complaint later!"
Paraphrasing Spock's line when he relieved Commodore Decker. Niiiiiice!
Geordi rocked in command. Always fun to see the battle bridge/saucer separation used for the specific reason it was designed for. 🖖
Not sure if you noticed that the actor who played Kirk's son David in The Wrath of Khan and the actor that played Khan's right-hand man Joachim were both in Symbiosis.
I came to say that, you beat me by 2 minutes
Judson Scott (Sobi) was also in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan as "Joachim", Khan's right hand man!

Note: In Symbiosis, You see Denise Crosby (YAR) Waving...remember this for next time!

Was going to say the same thing!
did you recognize the actor who played Kirk's son re-appear in Symbiosis?

I love The Arsenal Of Freedom, it's y third favourite in the Season, after The Naked Now, and one you are yet to see.

Felicium . . . felicity . . . happiness.
Two good episodes, one with a moral attached.
The most unrealistic fact about the Star Trek series, is that the top command crew goes on the away missions.
Love your star trek videos. Its a funny irony you're wearing a shirt with the word Dominion on it, if you continue to watch the later star trek series you will eventually meet a species called The Dominion.
Trekkies know what im talking about 😉
Thank you also to our men and women who have to go to outer space for real.
So Merritt Butrick, who previously played David Marcus in Star Trek II & III was lost to AIDS shortly after filming this episode.
Every time I see you in an Old Dominion University shirt, I wonder whether you are a Virginian / live in Virginia. The years I spent living in Northern Virginia remain one of the happiest times of my life-during which we also made several visits to the Historic Triangle.
I was born and raised in Virginia 😊 Old Dominion is my alma mater. The Historic Triangle is one of my favorite places to visit when I can.
Rookies? no, Junior officers. You are right, they are not *as seasoned* but they were trained and need the experience and confidence. This is a good episode, I just wish they could have dismantled that device.
Second episode, the two male co-stars are from "Wrath of Khan" which was just filmed recently.
I forgot Merritt was in this too. Was this his last performance?
I believe so I could be wrong. When he looks sick, it looks very real. Going to look more into it.

Watched this as a 13yo kid (I already didn't really like Wes) and even I thought that scene was too preachy and forced.
I don't understand why so many feel this way-it is a highlight for me
I'm certainly not in favor of drug-abuse; but it annoys me every time to see how poorly written, preachy, and patronizing the dialogue is when Yar explains addiction to Wesley.
I made my comment before I saw yours. I 100% disagree with what you said, but I didn't make it just to snark at you
Hi, Courtney! You’re getting a to be a better Trekkie all the time, beautiful! I love, love, love you, Courtney! Sending you a sweet kiss, my love! 😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
