I had the same thing happen to me. The lower connecting rod bearing went out on my 2008 crf250r. Metal shavings were all up in my oil filter..... I ended up buying the whole video from him. I highly recommend it. I know it sucks paying for a video, but think about it in comparison to the cost of a full rebuild. The money you spend by buying his video to do the rebuild yourself saves you 10x+ over in the money you would have spent by paying a mechanic to do it for you. His video goes over everything in depth. I am forever thankful for content like this on the internet. Thank you, Matthew!!!
Can I buy a video to this on my 2015 CRF250r, I’m very handy have all torque wrench, special tools to get the job done I just get nervous taking engines apart.

Matt, you are doing a great job with these videos. The tutorial and camera work are among the best on youtube. I use an impact on low settings for 8-10mm bolts, and have never had a problem.

If your crank end is damaged, see if you can repair or worse case replace the crank. If the damaged end ruins that seal in cover, the motor will starve of oil.

No, I can't say that I have yet. Are you sure the brake lever/pedal is not in the way? Start soaking it in penetrating oil. Does the swingarm rotate freely?
Current owner bought the bike this past summer with 15hr. I don't think you can claim warranty 5yrs after purchasing a bike. Search the web for "CRF metal shavings in oil filter". Seems like a common problem. These bikes should be ridden hard, that is what they are for.
Awesome video about to rebuild my 2006 crf250r with the exact same problem this bike ran in to. Well worth the money to save a thousand in labor at my local shop that charges $95/hour.
MatthewMCRepair pulled the engine today, and i dont have any movement in the chain at all. What could this indicate? Also, im not able to get that first rod out that you pulled out the side. Any tricks? Thanks a lot
Matt I have question I'm hoping you can answer. I'm rebuilding a 05 crf250x and I'm not sure about something. When I stab the Tranny shafts through I'm left with a small amount of play
Put bike on stand with rear wheel in air. You'll have to lift rear wheel a bit to release pressure off bolt. You can use a drift punch to knock it out, it may be rusted in.
Hi Matthew, firstly I just want to say thanks for uploading such a well explained, clear and informative video. I i didn't have this video i probably would have made costly mistakes when rebuilding my 2007 crf250r, or never had attempted to do it, or pay someone else to do it. This video has no doubt saved me $1000's. My question is about the installation of the 'idler gear' at 1.48.15 Is there any way round it should go? one side is slightly deeper than the other and the teeth dont end up perfectly flush. How is it fixed? it kind of seems loose even when clutch basket is torqued down. Thanks Matt Dave
+David Cannan David, thanks for the compliments. Glad it is saving you some cash. That gear should be able to go on one way only. Check out 1:57:09. I was able to wiggle it a bit.
Great video! I'm hoping much of this will relate to the CRF150R ... it looks similar. Did you make a video on the rebuilding and reassembly? If not I can probably figure it out, but my bike failed much like yours where it just locked up and the kick starter wouldn't kick it anymore. I'm hoping I can get the timing set right, that's the only thing that tweeks my mind. Thanks.
Holy cow the same thing happened to my CRF 250, I was going rebuild the top end but seeing the metal shavings indicates I will have to split my case too.
yah that's what I thought... I have three friends that like their Hondas but all three of my friends Hondas motors seized and blew their cranks... now the lucky guy got 120 hours out of his... the other guy 50 and the other 25 so I think id be best with going with Yamaha.. thanks for the help oh and are the kawis good?
im sorry but this is the last question?on the roller part on the rocker it feels like the bearing went out, because it feels bumpy and loose when you spin it and i want to know if that would cause the motor to lock up. i also noticed that the camshaft had damaged on one lobe. nothing else looks damaged no bearings look like its been siezed do you think it would be the crank HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU
Wayne, I have a case splitter. I've demonstrated that you do not need to buy that tool for this motor. I would never hit a good crank with a hammer. The old crank is junk.
@@HTMR Will the full rebuilt for the valves be included in this purchase video? Am getting ready to do my 04 crf250r valves but everything is taking off that's how I got it.
Happened to me on a Beta 450 RR. I had to get the frame on a workshop 20 ton press and press it out. It was rusted and seized. Don't get me wrong i didn't use all 20tons of force but it needed a few.
2007. Your question is really hard to answer. There are so many factors that determine engine life. Feel free to email me here with any potential ads you are looking at and I can throw my 2 cents in: www.howtomotorcyclerepair.com/contact/
This bike still has the factory rev limiter. Not sure how it was maintained the first 15hr of it's life before it was purchased by the current owner. Seems like it's a common problem with this model.
hey thanks for posting this. my son and i have a 2005 CRF250R that needs a top end and bottom end and now looks like a new clutch as well and i'm wondering if you think it might be better to sell off for parts or if you think its still worth rebuilding. We traded a busted quad to get this bike so we've put approx $1800 Canadian dollars into it and the price tag for all the new parts is getting close to $3600. I know the bike isn't worth that much money if we were to buy it in working condition but i think it would be something we could work on together and ride it for years to come as long as we maintained it. What do you think?
I think everyone should rebuild a bike at least once in their lifetime. The learning experience, especially if your son watches you, will be priceless.
you should loosen the cam cap bolts a little at a time in diagonal pattern to avoid warping them, if you ruin those you replace the whole head. and you should always put a finger under the cam caps to avoid dropping the bearing retainer clips especially if you're not stuffing a rag in cam tower or anything. i understand it's a full tear down and motor is junk but it's good practice
Good question. The only real way to find out is to call them. Price will vary by region due to labor rate. A rough estimate would be 8-12hrs @$50-75 an hour. Don't hold me accountable for those numbers...LOL.
Crank, piston, bearings & seals. It did not take anything else out. Don't run the engine anymore and fix it. Look into rebuilding your OEM crank with a rod kit to save $$.
MatthewMCRepair oh yeah the kick starter was rock solid I didn't run it it's all tore apart atm just waiting for the puller to come in and good idea thank yoy
I have a 2005 crf250r and the same thing that happened to the bike that your fixing, happened to me. I'm thinking since the bottom end is "done" im gonna put a Hot Rods bottom end kit into it, a Athena big bore kit, that will bump the cc's to 280, and also put hot cams in it. I was wondering what you think? and also how much in labor costs it should cost. any help would be much appreciated!! by the way these videos are great, even though I am not mechanically inclind
Have you ever had a crf blow a head gasket? I have a 2007 with very high hours and i just recently had the problem you fixed on this video. I replaced the crank, bearings, rod, piston, valves and all the gaskets. Then about ten hours of riding after the rebuild my bike is consuming coolant and blowing white smoke. What do you think it is?
Matt - have you ever scene the oil journal in the center case above the crank - break the mounting bracket? I found the steel journal still inside the cast nipple with the broken half of the bracket, laying in the bottom of the crank.
Iam sorry i ment the 2014 because now the 2014 CRF250r has duel exhaust and i wasn't sure if having duel exhaust would have any change in the engine. Thanks for your help though!
I haven't had any issues with my bottom end and no signs of wear, but I want to replace my crankshaft (and the associated bearings) as preventative maintenance. Is it possible to split the case without removing all these components? I am assuming I will have to pull the engine out.
I have an 09 crf 250r, the bike would not go into first and fifth gear so we had to split the cases and repair that. We fixed that issue and when we went to put the 2 cases back together we noticed the crank case bolts that hold the 2 cases together were not getting tight enough and were stretching. These are 8mm bolts that hold the cases together. The torque spec is 12 ft-lbs.
We also did notice once we torqued the bolts the oil pump wouldn’t spin freely (could not hardly turn it). But when the bolts were loose it would spin freely with no resistance. Any suggestions?
No this wasn’t an oem gasket. It was an off brand gasket that we got off of eBay really cheap. Should the gasket be a certain thickness to allow the clearance for the oil pump?
So I have 0 mechanic experience but I want to do a winter project and I'm looking to fix and rebuild a dirt bike engine. How hard would it be for a beginner to rebuild an engine? Would I be getting myself into something I can't finish?
Ok thanks a lot for the info... so if I buy a 06 or newer Honda the crank will have a longer life? And thanks for the info on the yzf. And one more thing... is the Honda known for good reliability?
I just got one question would you recomend doing rebuild by myself (I've never had any expirience with that stuff) or give it to the specialist? cheers!

I have a 2007 CRF250 that needs a crank and piston. Cylinder has some scoring and I'm trying to determine if it can be honed or not does this cylinder on a 2007 have the nikasil plating?
Yes it is plated. You can email me a pic. You would need a shop to hone it or send it out for replate. New cylinder is almost same cost as replating from what I remember.
@@HTMR I was told by a Honda mechanic that the nikasil cylinder couldn't be honed? Is this true? I'm guessing not since you just mentioned it could be honed 🤷🏼♂️
@@FREEDOMSYNDICATEOFFICIAL You can, but need a diamond hone. Most shops will not have this. If you can feel scoring with fingernail, time for a replate.
Think this will help me. I think I may need new motor. Bike shut off and wouldn't restart and now won't roll or go into neutral. I've worked on cars a bit but know little about bikes. Should I even attempt to change motor on this CRF 150f 2008 model?
I don't have much experience with big bore kits for this model. Your best bet is to get feedback on thumpertalk forum. Labor costs vary, so call around and ask for quotes. They should be able to give you a ballpark over phone.
Is it too much too ask how much you make a year? I want to have a job like this, because I love the sport and enjoy the bikes, but I'm not sure if I would make enough money for my standards. Thanks!
thanks for the video I just buy one crf for a guy for 700 very clean he buy all bottom and top end and he told me he pay a guy for do all the work but the guy dont put the timing good he give me all engine apart and I see all is new just I need to be. sure wats the position of every part I way for the video when you assemble the bike
So is 2009 model CRF250R engine somehow changed or is it same as this? just broke week ago at track: Piston, Head, crank, valves... and much more :(( i thought it is much cheaper to buy parts and build your engine by yourself than taking it to the shop... :/ They told in the shop that even the parts would cost over 2500€.......
Try cleaning the hot start plunger at the carb, sometimes they get really dirty. Also, try adjusting your pilot fuel screw. It sounds lean to me. If all that fails, check for vacuum leaks and clean the carb.

This video has no doubt saved me $1000's.
My question is about the installation of the 'idler gear' at 1.48.15
Is there any way round it should go? one side is slightly deeper than the other and the teeth dont end up perfectly flush. How is it fixed? it kind of seems loose even when clutch basket is torqued down.
Thanks Matt
Dave
+David Cannan David, thanks for the compliments. Glad it is saving you some cash. That gear should be able to go on one way only. Check out 1:57:09. I was able to wiggle it a bit.
Nice video, always fun doing some work in the garage with the noise of rain.
Thanks.
Your 150r is different.
@@HTMR Oh, bummer. I can't find anything on them :(
Holy cow the same thing happened to my CRF 250, I was going rebuild the top end but seeing the metal shavings indicates I will have to split my case too.
yah that's what I thought... I have three friends that like their Hondas but all three of my friends Hondas motors seized and blew their cranks... now the lucky guy got 120 hours out of his... the other guy 50 and the other 25 so I think id be best with going with Yamaha.. thanks for the help oh and are the kawis good?
im sorry but this is the last question?on the roller part on the rocker it feels like the bearing went out, because it feels bumpy and loose when you spin it and i want to know if that would cause the motor to lock up. i also noticed that the camshaft had damaged on one lobe. nothing else looks damaged no bearings look like its been siezed do you think it would be the crank HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU
I ended up buying a 01' KX250 for 1100. I ride once a month if that. I do like the power delivery on the 4 strokes though.
John, under vid in description section, click on the blog post link. It should answer all of your questions :)
Mitch, in vid description, there is a link to a a blog post with service manual dowload and parts cost breakdown. Good luck.
Wayne, I have a case splitter. I've demonstrated that you do not need to buy that tool for this motor. I would never hit a good crank with a hammer. The old crank is junk.
Where is 2, 3 and 4, really wanted to see them! Loved this video. Watched the whole thing.
+Kylar Shaner Kyle, the full 3hr video can be purchased here: gum.co/Gyjr

Will the full rebuilt for the valves be included in this purchase video?
Am getting ready to do my 04 crf250r valves but everything is taking off that's how I got it.
@@jayalo7882 Head dissasembly is not included. How are you doing the valves yourself? You need a machine shop to do the valve job for you.
@@HTMR ok thanks can you send me the link to buy the video thanks.

Happened to me on a Beta 450 RR. I had to get the frame on a workshop 20 ton press and press it out. It was rusted and seized. Don't get me wrong i didn't use all 20tons of force but it needed a few.
I'm sorry to hear that. Make sure you check out the blog post for more info.
what year is that bike. And also I'm looking to buy a new bike soon and how many hours can motorcross bikes have before they blow up?
2007. Your question is really hard to answer. There are so many factors that determine engine life.
Feel free to email me here with any potential ads you are looking at and I can throw my 2 cents in:

is this the same way on rebuilding a 2004 crf450r i bought it disassembled and i need to put everything back together
This bike still has the factory rev limiter. Not sure how it was maintained the first 15hr of it's life before it was purchased by the current owner.
Seems like it's a common problem with this model.
U guys missed out he had video 1-4 on youtube for free over the summer
hey thanks for posting this. my son and i have a 2005 CRF250R that needs a top end and bottom end and now looks like a new clutch as well and i'm wondering if you think it might be better to sell off for parts or if you think its still worth rebuilding.
+02SubaruWRX Yes, I agree, thanks for the tips.
I have some brass shaveings in my crf250r but there isn’t nearly as much as that bike had do you think that it is still ok to ride
Do you have any valve check/adjustment videos? Do you think a bad valve or shim could be the reason my bike is a PITA to start?
The service manual covers both. I would compare PN's with online parts diagrams.
Good question. The only real way to find out is to call them. Price will vary by region due to labor rate. A rough estimate would be 8-12hrs @$50-75 an hour. Don't hold me accountable for those numbers...LOL.
I bought and used your kx rebuild video and it was amazing, I now have on 07 crf150r and am wondering if your 250 build would work on the 150?
No the 150 is different.
Single cam? Thought all newer bikes had two. Good video Btw. Watched the whole thing
Honda has the unicam design. Thanks for the compliment.
Hey Mike. Sorry to hear about the motor. Did the engine oil migrate to gearbox? Do a search on oil migration, pretty common problem also.
hey how's it going this just happens to my bike same metal shavings and all next few days should be fun taking it apart
That sucks. Real common problem on these models.
MatthewMCRepair what did you have to replace I just rebuilt the top end on mine and it still looks good so I might just need a crank
I'm having a hard time visualizing what you described. Can you email me a pic? matthew at howtomotorcyclerepair dot com
Bill, the shavings were gold/brass colored.
Matthew absolutely love your vids.!! Do you have a vid. On replacing valves on an 06 crf250r? Thanks in advance.
No I don't sorry. Best to let a machine shop like fast heads do the valves and cut the seats.
You have to pull the engine.
Never have done that job on that model, however will be similar in difficulty as the CRF.
Do you have any suggestions?
The crankcase screws have a diameter of 6mm (8mm head) and should be torqued to 7 ft lbs. Likely you have overtorqued and stripped them.
We also did notice once we torqued the bolts the oil pump wouldn’t spin freely (could not hardly turn it). But when the bolts were loose it would spin freely with no resistance. Any suggestions?
Did you use an OEM crankcase gasket?
No this wasn’t an oem gasket. It was an off brand gasket that we got off of eBay really cheap. Should the gasket be a certain thickness to allow the clearance for the oil pump?
So I have 0 mechanic experience but I want to do a winter project and I'm looking to fix and rebuild a dirt bike engine. How hard would it be for a beginner to rebuild an engine? Would I be getting myself into something I can't finish?
Go for it. With a service manual and a video you should have everything you need.
Ok thanks a lot for the info... so if I buy a 06 or newer Honda the crank will have a longer life? And thanks for the info on the yzf. And one more thing... is the Honda known for good reliability?
I only say thanks for the video its healt me a lot I just rebuild my entire engine now I just wait for me gasket
+Alex Ramos Oh ok. Your welcome!
I think that 2 strokes can be pretty reliable when tuned properly.
I just got one question would you recomend doing rebuild by myself (I've never had any expirience with that stuff) or give it to the specialist?
cheers!
I'm not a specialist and figured it out. Go for it!
Where are parts 2-4? Loved this video, but need the rebuild ones now

@@HTMR thanks for the advice.
great video but when splitting the cases you are supposed to loosen in 2-3 steps criss cross so as not to warp the case
I'll try that next time. I never had an issue with my method.
Think this will help me. I think I may need new motor. Bike shut off and wouldn't restart and now won't roll or go into neutral. I've worked on cars a bit but know little about bikes. Should I even attempt to change motor on this CRF 150f 2008 model?
Richard Johnson Do you have a cheap motor for sale? lol I just bought this one and lasted 2 days. I'm sick
Richard Johnson I don't have any motors for sale. I'd say go ahead and attempt to fix it yourself to save some money!
I don't have much experience with big bore kits for this model. Your best bet is to get feedback on thumpertalk forum.
Labor costs vary, so call around and ask for quotes. They should be able to give you a ballpark over phone.
alright i'll do that.So i take off the clutch, flywheel all that stuff and then i should be able to see the shift shaft and what's wrong with it?
Great series. The puller for the fly wheel. Is it just a standard puller
Special puller.
Is it too much too ask how much you make a year? I want to have a job like this, because I love the sport and enjoy the bikes, but I'm not sure if I would make enough money for my standards. Thanks!
Jacob, these vids and working on bikes is a hobby. I used to work at bike shops before and during college.
Email me and we can talk more.
thanks for the video I just buy one crf for a guy for 700 very clean he buy all bottom and top end and he told me he pay a guy for do all the work but the guy dont put the timing good he give me all engine apart and I see all is new just I need to be. sure wats the position of every part I way for the video when you assemble the bike
+Alex Ramos Can you restate your question?
So is 2009 model CRF250R engine somehow changed or is it same as this?
just broke week ago at track: Piston, Head, crank, valves... and much more :((
i thought it is much cheaper to buy parts and build your engine by yourself than taking it to the shop... :/
They told in the shop that even the parts would cost over 2500€.......
Honestly, I haven't worked on those model years. It will be close.
How and where and how much to you buy the rest of the repair video?
Try cleaning the hot start plunger at the carb, sometimes they get really dirty. Also, try adjusting your pilot fuel screw. It sounds lean to me.
If all that fails, check for vacuum leaks and clean the carb.
when i did mine i used a ratchet but it looks like the impact wrench speeds up the process by a lot... good to know for the next rebuild haha
