Subaru considering sewing one of his few skills coming into the Re:Zero world. Knowing the significance of that makes this story even darker. He gave up on fixing things himself, but he instead drove himself to fix everything the only way he knew how: sewing back together a person who he thought could.

Having read up to the current arc and a good portion of the side stories, there is really isn't much of a contest unfortunately - Emilia is no doubt "best girl". As for Fate/Stay Night - the decision is much more proportionally difficult. Having played through each route of the original visual novel - I would probably choose Sakura. If you haven’t read the visual novel, this will likely be a surprise. Characters like Illya, Sakura and even Medea were much more developed in the original visual novel. Illya’s story is somewhat more interesting than Sakura’s, but because I am able to empathise with Sakura much more than her and Rin, - Sakura got the slight edge. Here’s the short version, comment below if you would like the long version. Also, who are your favourites?

I find the if stories so intriguing because it shows us how Subaru is always on the precipice of falling apart. At any given moment, he’s a step away from insanity. Every IF route shows us times when he makes a choice and falls off the deep end. It’s insane that Envy route Subaru has held himself together like he has. How he hasn’t taken that wrong step off the deep end yet
I always thought the IF Stories were "too much" and that he wouldn't go that far, but Arc 6 just showed how unstable Subaru actually is, all the ifs make total sense

That's what makes the story so sad in that Subaru's plan on using the books of the dead is completely pointless from the get go. This version of Subaru will be trapped in that timeline with everyone dead.

You fail to understand this is not the "Real Subaru", this is Subaru who has lost all his memories plus has Louis Arneb inside of him which is definitely helping warp his personality. Subaru normally wouldn't coke a little girl to death but that happened in the canon storyline. So no, this "what if" isn't flawed.
Just the thought of him killing beako and emilia made me cry.. and the fact that he just wanted to know himself. He just wanted to know who he actually is.
And he also decided that he would bring everyone back and fix everything but he was too confused after getting so many memories from different people :(
According to Tappei's commentary, Subaru's hair is white due to reading Beatrice's book. Experiencing all of her *400 years* was overwhelming (especially after seeing his connection to her and the gravity of his actions). Subaru wasn't able to handle it. It also caused him to slam his head against the walls and floor, which was what caused him to lose most of his eyesight in one eye.
This gets even more depressing when we, the audience, know that Subaru's plan to bring back the "real Natsuki Subaru" is completely doomed from the start.

It’s depressing to remember how far he’s come so far in the story, how many friends he’s made and all of the good times he’s had with them. And imagining the betrayal they all feel as they watch their friend strike them all down.
Amazing animatic for my favorite IF! It definitely catches the gloominess that surrounds the story. I especially love the "Patching Together" Scenes. Your diligence is greatly appreciated it! Summary: Subaru loses his memories and wants to get his old self back, he kills everyone and uses the library of the dead to read everything about what his friends have endured and also about what kinda person Subaru was when he was with them. He thinks that after he kills everyone and ''patches'' everything together he can be complete and then use return by death to know everything after restarting. He kills everyone and murder becomes a habit and he keeps on killing with the help of Shaula, promising her that he will kill her with his own hands when everything is done. He becomes insane after reading Beatrices book and his hair turns white with the amount of stress, he basically has 600 years of memories at the age of 18....
His desire of wanting his old self is not just to remember who he really was, but to be a superhero that can save anyone. He believes that ‘Natsuki Subaru’ is an amazing person who can withstand death and save anyone. From this, he thinks that ‘Natsuki Subaru’ has a power to change the destiny, and he aims to become this character, which he wasn’t.
Huh. I just now read the wiki for the what ifs and saw that because of his conversation with emilia, subaru was able to understand temperance. So, basically, subaru chose gluttony, but emilia talked him out of it. Just like with sloth if and greed if, had it not been for someone else, subaru wouldve went down the wrong path. Jesus, no wonder teppei said the all the ifs are the easy way out, cause the envy route is a fusion of kaizo mario, dark souls, and cuphead combined into one videogame
He is missing one of the biggest pieces, Rem. When Subaru was on the verge of despair Rem helped Subaru and Subaru chose to become a hero, without those memories even if he somehow (though impossible) "patched together" what he had, he would never have all the pieces.

In some like pride and wrath where he goes insano killer mode, he doesnt know/have relationships with a lot of the characters yet. in gluttony, all his comrades like him and have been through a lot, then suddenly out of nowhere he goes insane and starts hunting them down. like imagine that

For Subaru who lost his memory, he blindly believes that ‘Natsuki Subaru’ is a Superman who can save anyone. But truth is that he wasn’t, so there is no answer of becoming ‘Natsuki Subaru’ that he aims to be. He believes that ‘Natsuki Subaru’ has the ability to change the destiny, and that will patch everything up.
This story was so insane. The whole period where everything was in a state of ruin after Subaru lost his memories was insane and depressing. I sometimes think about how much mental endurance this guy has for surviving hell.
This has to be the most depressing because Subaru thinks he can bring back "Natsuki Subaru" by reliving other people's memories but he will never find the fact that there were so many failed loops in between. He will always see the successful loops and he will always think "I need to know more, this isn't enough", not showing him the fact that he had to try a lot in order to reach the current state. Also, Subaru in this stage doesn't know even himself, and he doesn't have anyone other than Shaula, although she was also stated to die soon. Subaru will never stop, and he will keep on killing everyone who knows him, trying to complete himself. And the saddest part is that he plans to save everyone else after he brings back "Natsuki Subaru", but that might never happen because there is no end to what he can never be satisfied, just like Louis' Satiation. And even if somehow he gets to know himself, god knows when and where will he respawn. Maybe after everyone died, who knows?
I am anime only but got spoiled about what happened to Subaru in arc.6 (which just made me more excited for more re zero) but I still understand nothing in this IF other than the fact that he killed everyone because he did not trust them
Spoiler alert ! . . . . . . . . As far as I know, in arc 6, Subaru becomes amnesiac for a while after passing the tower's trials. In this IF, his amnesia causes him to develop some sort of obsession, trying to find who is [NATSUKI SUBARU]. He does so by killing all of [NATSUKI SUBARU]'s friends and reading their books of the dead, thus "Patching together" the image of [NATSUKI SUBARU]. Also, iirc, GluttonyBaru believes that [NATSUKI SUBARU] can just magically fix everything.

This IF is the Most depressing IF.... Because Reinhard is the last one who has Subaru's Memory and Subaru cant kill him literary And also This Subaru Doesnt know the fact that There is a Save point And When the Save Point is Change He Cant go back
The most tragic part is that Subaru's plan wouldn't work, even if Reinhardt could be killed. Because no one he kills would have memories of Natsuki Subaru's failed loops. So [Subaru] would NEVER be able to patch together the real Subaru. All he's doing is abandoning his humanity by killing all his comrades.
I don't think he kills Reinhardt does he? Which is part of the tragedy, he'll never be able to kill Reinhardt. So he's doomed to an eternal loop where he will never even realize his goal was flawed from the start.

@ It's not about Reinhard being useless or dangerous, it's about the fact that Subaru needs to eventually kill Reinhardt, because he harbors memories of Real Subaru. But he'll never be able to kill Reinhardt, so his plan is destined to fail. He'll be eternally looping in an attempt to try and kill Reinhardt.
The one solace is the fact that with Emilia’s death, his checkpoints cannot be set. The terrible futures of Ayamatsu, Kasaneru and Oboreru were all possible because Emilia was alive. We now know from Tappei that once Subaru dies in the Sloth IF, he will go straight back to the Appa stand, with his whole life with Rem undone. Similarly, the Aganau If ends in Subaru dying after two decades of hunting Petelgeuse, then going straight back to the Appa stand with Rem. Tsugihagu, despite being the single most depressing If story, still has that one light at the end of the tunnel. Even though Subaru can never patch himself together again by doing what he has done, with the story being very clear about that, since his final foe is Reinhard, he will finally experience death no matter what he tries. He will wake up in the Watchtower. And will have the chance to fix things. He will have infinite chances to fix things, if each time he kills Emilia. The one, single, bleak hope is that when that horrible present is undone, Natsuki Subaru will not keep making the same mistake again.
just because Otto can achieve so much even without superhuman power, just like Subaru from other people's eyes. Otto's achievement: - stall Garfiel and act as the turning point in ARC 4 - draw against Gluttony, collect the fragment of the burned book - Daily life: good at paper work (helps RAM to get more sleep and Otto's trading skill actually impresses Roswal as well)
Otto is an important friend to Subaru who gave him hope to not carry the burden of his power all alone. Otto assures Subaru that he can reach out to him for help. He was Subaru's true friend and usually that means he had the best chance of convincing amnesia Subaru to stop. Subaru even says in this story thta Otto was really important to him.
From the very Start hes completely failed he truly is broken beyond repair in his paranoia he killed all of the emilia camp to read their books of the dead and then he realized his mistake and then believed in the power of Return by death from peoples memories he believed that the real nastuki Subaru could save everyone and so he went and started to try and kill all those that know him but in the end even if he does reach "Completion" then all hes doing is hating himself and even if he goes backwards in time before he killed anyone it doesnt matter since by that point he truly is broken beyond repair seriously and all his friends must think hes Deranged as hes the only one who knows about Return by death and so to the outside world Subaru just looks lìke a maniac killing all his friends and everyone who knows his name for some delusion so from the very start he had completely failed truly saddening in all honesty is that even if he does succeeed hes already failed
One of the saddest parts of this if is the fact its a dead end quite literally. Subaru will never be able to kill reinhardt. He will not stop without patching subaru fully he will probably think subaru became some op incredible superman or something with his relationship to reinhardt because after killing everyone else nothing will change about patching together he will be the same old subaru. He will probably live his entire life with shaula killing everyone subaru even once talked with. In the end he will die somehow. And what if he sees his savepoint changed? What if satella has enough of rui and just kills subarus body for good? And one of the even sadder parts is real subaru is watching this happen for all eternity in hall of the dead with only rem with him.

I read it last night and my god it was a masterpiece, easy 10/10 for me.. love the themes, Subaru's depth in here is just simply insane, this IF for me is the best cuz this route started pretty far in the story already compared to the other IF so there were more interesting character relationships like for example reinhard in this route was trying to reason and wanted to believe in Subaru.. masterpiece

Greed if is so depressing, Subaru managed to keep himself together until arc 6 through experiencing Determination, Love, Trust, Pain and Death.. But he forgot it all and starts from scratch at the most worst moment.
Spoilers: So, in gluttony if, Subaru loses his memories and decides to kill everyone that might know him so that he can read their 'Book of Dead' to get their memories about his old self. He basically becomes a Gluttony Archbishop in a way.

This is amazing, the music going along with the visuals makes this one of the best animatics I've seen.

Huh. I just now read the wiki for the what ifs and saw that because of his conversation with emilia, subaru was able to understand temperance. So, basically, subaru chose gluttony, but emilia talked him out of it. Just like with sloth if and greed if, had it not been for someone else, subaru wouldve went down the wrong path. Jesus, no wonder teppei said the all the ifs are the easy way out, cause the envy route is a fusion of kaizo mario, dark souls, and cuphead combined into one videogame

He is missing one of the biggest pieces, Rem. When Subaru was on the verge of despair Rem helped Subaru and Subaru chose to become a hero, without those memories even if he somehow (though impossible) "patched together" what he had, he would never have all the pieces.
this if story has a different feel to the other ones just because of how far in the story it happens. In some like pride and wrath where he goes insano killer mode, he doesnt know/have relationships with a lot of the characters yet. in gluttony, all his comrades like him and have been through a lot, then suddenly out of nowhere he goes insane and starts hunting them down. like imagine that

This story was so insane. The whole period where everything was in a state of ruin after Subaru lost his memories was insane and depressing. I sometimes think about how much mental endurance this guy has for surviving hell.

This has to be the most depressing because Subaru thinks he can bring back "Natsuki Subaru" by reliving other people's memories but he will never find the fact that there were so many failed loops in between. He will always see the successful loops and he will always think "I need to know more, this isn't enough", not showing him the fact that he had to try a lot in order to reach the current state.
Also, Subaru in this stage doesn't know even himself, and he doesn't have anyone other than Shaula, although she was also stated to die soon. Subaru will never stop, and he will keep on killing everyone who knows him, trying to complete himself.
And the saddest part is that he plans to save everyone else after he brings back "Natsuki Subaru", but that might never happen because there is no end to what he can never be satisfied, just like Louis' Satiation. And even if somehow he gets to know himself, god knows when and where will he respawn. Maybe after everyone died, who knows?

As far as I know, in arc 6, Subaru becomes amnesiac for a while after passing the tower's trials.
In this IF, his amnesia causes him to develop some sort of obsession, trying to find who is [NATSUKI SUBARU]. He does so by killing all of [NATSUKI SUBARU]'s friends and reading their books of the dead, thus "Patching together" the image of [NATSUKI SUBARU]. Also, iirc, GluttonyBaru believes that [NATSUKI SUBARU] can just magically fix everything.

The most tragic part is that Subaru's plan wouldn't work, even if Reinhardt could be killed. Because no one he kills would have memories of Natsuki Subaru's failed loops. So [Subaru] would NEVER be able to patch together the real Subaru. All he's doing is abandoning his humanity by killing all his comrades.

But he'll never be able to kill Reinhardt, so his plan is destined to fail. He'll be eternally looping in an attempt to try and kill Reinhardt.

The one solace is the fact that with Emilia’s death, his checkpoints cannot be set. The terrible futures of Ayamatsu, Kasaneru and Oboreru were all possible because Emilia was alive. We now know from Tappei that once Subaru dies in the Sloth IF, he will go straight back to the Appa stand, with his whole life with Rem undone. Similarly, the Aganau If ends in Subaru dying after two decades of hunting Petelgeuse, then going straight back to the Appa stand with Rem. Tsugihagu, despite being the single most depressing If story, still has that one light at the end of the tunnel. Even though Subaru can never patch himself together again by doing what he has done, with the story being very clear about that, since his final foe is Reinhard, he will finally experience death no matter what he tries. He will wake up in the Watchtower. And will have the chance to fix things. He will have infinite chances to fix things, if each time he kills Emilia. The one, single, bleak hope is that when that horrible present is undone, Natsuki Subaru will not keep making the same mistake again.

Otto's achievement:
- stall Garfiel and act as the turning point in ARC 4
- draw against Gluttony, collect the fragment of the burned book
- Daily life: good at paper work (helps RAM to get more sleep and Otto's trading skill actually impresses Roswal as well)
Otto is an important friend to Subaru who gave him hope to not carry the burden of his power all alone. Otto assures Subaru that he can reach out to him for help. He was Subaru's true friend and usually that means he had the best chance of convincing amnesia Subaru to stop. Subaru even says in this story thta Otto was really important to him.

From the very Start hes completely failed he truly is broken beyond repair in his paranoia he killed all of the emilia camp to read their books of the dead and then he realized his mistake and then believed in the power of Return by death from peoples memories he believed that the real nastuki Subaru could save everyone and so he went and started to try and kill all those that know him but in the end even if he does reach "Completion" then all hes doing is hating himself and even if he goes backwards in time before he killed anyone it doesnt matter since by that point he truly is broken beyond repair seriously and all his friends must think hes Deranged as hes the only one who knows about Return by death and so to the outside world Subaru just looks lìke a maniac killing all his friends and everyone who knows his name for some delusion so from the very start he had completely failed truly saddening in all honesty is that even if he does succeeed hes already failed

One of the saddest parts of this if is the fact its a dead end quite literally. Subaru will never be able to kill reinhardt. He will not stop without patching subaru fully he will probably think subaru became some op incredible superman or something with his relationship to reinhardt because after killing everyone else nothing will change about patching together he will be the same old subaru. He will probably live his entire life with shaula killing everyone subaru even once talked with. In the end he will die somehow. And what if he sees his savepoint changed? What if satella has enough of rui and just kills subarus body for good? And one of the even sadder parts is real subaru is watching this happen for all eternity in hall of the dead with only rem with him.

I read it last night and my god it was a masterpiece, easy 10/10 for me.. love the themes, Subaru's depth in here is just simply insane, this IF for me is the best cuz this route started pretty far in the story already compared to the other IF so there were more interesting character relationships like for example reinhard in this route was trying to reason and wanted to believe in Subaru.. masterpiece

So, in gluttony if, Subaru loses his memories and decides to kill everyone that might know him so that he can read their 'Book of Dead' to get their memories about his old self. He basically becomes a Gluttony Archbishop in a way.
Epic.
