I really am impressed by the attention to detail that Guillermo Del Toro gave the Stephen Gammell drawings. I recall being disturbed by those same images as a child, but at the same time, it was difficult to look away. I always felt there was something reminiscent of Lovecraft in those charcoal sketches; a horror of something beyond comprehension, of a thing that aught not have been. Something that was never meant to manifest in our reality. As Del Toro has stated before he was a great fan of Lovecraft's work, so I imagine he must have had a similar view of Gammell's work.
Anybody else noticed that some of the characters fates were foreshadowed in the beginning? Auggie kept talking about what people eat, Chuck mentions being smothered by his mom, Ruth's attention to her face and make-up, etc. I just love detail in movies like that. It's always fun to see. Great review and kill count.
I know James is a busy guy, but let’s appreciate the fact that we managed to get two kill counts this month, instead of the once a month kill count he informed about. Thanks James. ❤️❤️❤️
I learned something similar from Baron von Trap Jaw on the Skeletor Show. "Pictures are hung, people are hanged. English is a lovely language, why do you have to sully it so with your improper grammar?"

This movie is basically a better version of the Goosebumps movie. I'm an unapologetic Goosebumps fanboy myself and while the Goosebumps movie wasn't bad nor terrible, it had some funny moments, it wasn't boring and was self aware of how silly the books can be. But it wasn't the Goosebumps movie that _I_ wanted to see, it didn't even _try_ to be a horror film. If I was to make adaptations of the books, depending on the story, I would give it a similar tone and quality to The Haunting Hour: The Series. I enjoyed this film, it wasn't super amazing or anything, but I enjoyed it. It pulled off some creepy imagery with the Pale Lady scene and had a brutal, onscreen death scene that cleverly gets around blood and gore for a PG-13 movie with the Harold scene. It may not be the same as Harold skinning someone alive like in the book, but turning into a scarecrow from the inside out with straw pouring through your skin and mouth is just as fucked up and brutal!

I remember reading The Big Toe in 6th grade on a field trip to some hills near San Fransisco. Our teacher read it and I stayed awake throughout the whole night. The movie does well to capture and present that same feeling you get when you read the book. I have to say, I think the Pale Lady might have been the best kill Pain-wise. Didn't seem like Chuck experienced any pain. Just fear and probably confusion as he was hugged.
I think the spider one was the one I would choose because A it's preventable as shown, and B I would probably die to a panic attack in the pale lady situation
in my opinion the scariest kill was the scarecrow, the fact that he’s trying to pull so much hay out of his mouth and body. i’ve had nightmares like this and the feeling of pulling something really long and clumpy out of your mouth, feeling it move through your intestines and stomach, it’s fucking terrifying
It was this kill count that calmed my fears of this, an amazing part of my childhood, being ruined by its movie iteration. Thank you, Dead Meat Crew. I finished watching it yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Just ThatGuy in my opinion the pale lady was creepy because of the white on red contrast but tommys was disgusting. Also, could the dude not slip past one of the pale ladys?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was one of my favorite things growing up. When I was a kid I got into trouble a LOT. And I spent a lot of time in the corner for it. Hours on end. And one time while I was in the corner I heard my mom reading to my little brother. It was the story of the girl with the ribbon around her neck. I'll skip to the end, her head falls off when she took the ribbon off her head fell off of her body. I had dreams about this girl. Vivid dreams. I thought about her all the time. She's one of the many reasons I fell in love with horror.
It's kind of killing his channel with not having the weekly kill counts. Usually his video's would have millions of views by now, but his most recent views have been going down. I understand he needs a break and time off, but the whole reason why people watch him and the reason why he's famous is because of the kill counts. Putting 1 at the end of each month is kind of killing the views.
I saw this in a "4-d x" cinema, and it was amazing. In the scene with the red lights, the actual cinema went red and flickered. When one character was being chased by the scarecrow, there was a draft.
i’m actually super surprised that the books came out that long ago. i’m 17 but definitely grew up reading these ever since i got them from my school library when i was in 3rd grade. which honestly was way to young and i think it kinda fucked me up. but i guess these books are just ageless.
Well, he usually posts something every week, but it’s not always a Kill Count, especially with his current schedule at the moment (he and Chelsea have a wedding to plan). But who knows? It could be another Kill Count next week, which would be a welcome surprise. 🙂
I like the Viper. Woman keeps getting calls from someone calling themselves “the Viper” and saying they’re coming up to her apartment. When he finally gets there, it turns out he just “came to vash and vipe the vindows”
Me tie doughty walker is a good story in my opinion it's a story about a kid and his dog could go to a haunted house where every Night a bloody head falls down a chimney so a boy and his dog go there and they hear somebody singing me tie doughty walker and after that happened a few times a bloody head falls down the chimney the dog dies on Friday and then the boy gets killed after the head screams we do not know how the boy died but that's the scary thing the head screams snd the the story ends how do y'all think the boy died?
Me and my best friend Olivia absolutely loved these books as a kid. Our elementary school library had them and we’d repeatedly check out the third book. Watching the movie brought back some awesome memories.
Notice how all the main characters who presumably died didn’t get stabbed, dismembered, melted, disintegrated, or burnt. They either got pulled into something or just transformed into a scarecrow. Not all horror movies and shows need gore to be scary.
me and my friend sparrow watched this movie yesterday. we’re both scared easily and this movie was no exception but when the toe and the guy coming down the chimney stories were introduced i was just like hit with a wave of nostalgia because those books were my entire childhood
Fun fact the contortionist for the jangly man was actual a Britain’s got talent participant and uses some of the moves he used during the show in this film. He used a scary persona even though he was one of the nicest men I have seen. I loved his performances because I also love doing contortionisim. (Don’t know if I spelt that right). He has also been an actor in other films to.
He’s also my uncle! His name is Troy James and he’s also done some work in Las Vegas as a Cirque de Soleil contortionist. He does a lot of magic tricks too! Chillest dude you’ll ever meet :)
14:33 "The Hearse Song" Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by For you may be the next to die They wrap you up in big white sheet From your hair down to your feet They put you in a pinewood box And cover you up with dirt and rocks It all goes well for about a week And then your coffin begins to leak And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out The worms play pinochle on your snout They eat your eyes, they eat your nose As you begin to decompose A slimy beetle with demon's eyes Chews through your stomach and out your sides Your stomach turns to rancid grease And puss pours out like melted cheese You spread it on a slice of bread And that's what you'll eat when you're dead And the worms crawl out, the worms crawl in The ones that crawl in are lean and thin The ones that crawl out are fat and stout Your eyes fall in and your hair falls out Your brain turns into maggot pie Your liver starts to liquify And for the living, all is well As you sink further into hell And the flames rise up to drag you down Into the fire where you will drown Your skin melts off as you descend And Satan tears you limb from limb Your suffering will never end And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out They'll eat your guts and then shit them out And when your bones begin to rot The worms remain, but you do not So don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by For someday, you'll be the one to die And when Death brings his cold despair Ask yourself, "Will anyone care?"
I remember this one! I remember that I'd try to sing this story while reading it since it's supposed to be a song. I did that with every spooky song story.
After seeing the Jangly Man scene, I realized that they actually mix two stories. "What do you come for?", which is about a woman who wishes for company, and then a corpse comes down her chimney, and "Me Tie Dough-ty Walker" which is about the talking head coming down the chimney. Nice work to whoever wrote that into the movie! Those two were always the creepiest stories to me.
I swear, I didn't get the Tituba line until I started reading The Crucible and learning more about the Salem witch trials. Now that I think back on this movie, it gave me a little bit of that vibe with Sarah being wrongly accused and all.
@@A_Film21 It's too intense to be a 12a, five year olds shouldn't be seeing this. The US have G, PG, PG-13 and R. They don't have one betwen the higher two, like we have 15 between 12 and 18. It's annoying, I know, but the system we have over here, in the UK, works.
I remember taking out those books over and over again from the school library, the librarian noticed and said "since you like horror so much you might like these" and gave me so many horror stories that got me to be a fan of horror altogether so these books were a big part of my childhood, I still remember almost all of its stories with so much fondness.
it's weird because it was so creepy buy in most of the stories the fear was a diversion, or everything turns out okay in the end and people don't die in them, they just get scared. But in the movie they all die except a few people. Like the books it was all suspense and they escape the danger, like the woman being followed by a man flashing his headlights but then she learns he was just keeping the murderer in her back seat from killing her, or stories where someone meets or sees a ghost and gets scared but then the ghost leaves and nothing happens, it was like just scary enough without being too violent or depressing for younger kids. The spider one was accurate but in the book the story ends right there, the spiders hatch from a girl's face, the end. So you don't find out if she died, went crazy, was totally fine and just mildly grossed out, nothing.
My teacher read it in 2nd grade. When ever he read the stories out loud, he used voices and sound effects, and, ngl I couldn’t stay in the room, same as about six other kids, he was really good at freaking us out.
The scarecrow scared my dad so much in the 80's that when the trailer came out, the first he saw was the scarecrow. He straight up said "nope, not today, nope" and left
The line “Welcome to the kill count! I’m James A. Janisse, and today we’re looking at-“ is used so much I can recite it in my sleep. This is not a bad thing
Btw, I can't help but feel like the name Sarah Bellows is a pun for cerebellum, which is a part of the brain which affects coordination, but also regulation of emotional responses like joy and fear.

James: "...and while they don't find a dude banging out morse code with his head down there..." Me: ecstatic over the fact that I understood a reference in a kill count
As any true Scary Stories fan will tell ya, "never laugh as a herse comes by" is a reference to the books as well and a addition I am so glad they integrated in
Me too, I’m really happy about that, I used to watch a channel called “moon raven” with my family, they would animate the stories with the audio book, but TH-cam deleted all of their channels :/
Honestly though, the Pale Lady's design looked spot on. They incorporated practically every little detail in there, even though I feel especially bad for the actor.

"he couldn't bring himself to answer the draft after his brother was killed overseas" maybe it's changed since then, but i thought that when a family member dies in the same war that you're fighting in, you are taken out of the military
The Sole Survivor Policy or DoD Directive 1315.15 "Special Separation Policies for Survivorship" describes a set of regulations in the Military of the United States that are designed to protect members of a family from the draft or from combat duty if they have already lost family members in military service (1948). You are correct. However, you have to start the process yourself and fill out the paperwork and submit it. You have to know it's a thing to use it.
hahaha omg I remember growing up on these. The pics always terrified me because they were just so creepy, nevermind how creepy the stories themselves were! The chair one still gets me to this day. It's actually really cool (and perhaps a little spooky too) to see these in film! I want to be just purely terrified by them, but WOW did they do these so much justice and love...I can't help but appreciate it XD
"You're really gonna try to sneak a plan like that past the guy who figured out who Walter White was?" Well considering it took Hank 5 seasons to figure out that his own brother in law was the DEA's #1 most wanted, yeah, I think these kids got this.
I actually had one of the books when i was a bit younger. It belonged to my oldest brother and he loved to scary me shitless with the stories. Looking back I think that was what made me love horror so much, and it was the first time I was exposed to horror because my mom was very protective. I remeber the one that scared me the most was "Me die doe tee walker" which I'm sad they changed in the movie but, that is just what happenes when you put a book into a movie
those books were pretty much my entire childhood, so fittingly, this was the first horror movie i ever saw in a theater. it was equal parts terrifying and awesome to see those drawings (that gave me nightmares) on the big screen
No, see they dont want to write on the book at all, or maybe they do, I forgot what stella wanted to do, but I do like stella, im just a forgiving person but anyone's, what stella means is you dont read the book, the book wants to make you a story that your in.
I do know that James needs a break and the weekly kill counts would drain him but man do I miss those weekly uploads.
At least it makes kill counts that much more special
I do too
It's kind of killing his channel with not having the weekly kill counts. Usually his video's would have millions of views by now, but his most recent views have been going down. I understand he needs a break and time off, but the whole reason why people watch him and the reason why he's famous is because of the kill counts. Putting 1 at the end of each month is kind of killing the views.
Me too :((
@@Assassin199410 and I've seen plenty of youtubers say consistency is key, and that taking long breaks often hurt TH-cam channels alot.

14:33 "The Hearse Song"
Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by
For you may be the next to die
They wrap you up in big white sheet
From your hair down to your feet
They put you in a pinewood box
And cover you up with dirt and rocks
It all goes well for about a week
And then your coffin begins to leak
And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
The worms play pinochle on your snout
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose
As you begin to decompose
A slimy beetle with demon's eyes
Chews through your stomach and out your sides
Your stomach turns to rancid grease
And puss pours out like melted cheese
You spread it on a slice of bread
And that's what you'll eat when you're dead
And the worms crawl out, the worms crawl in
The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your hair falls out
Your brain turns into maggot pie
Your liver starts to liquify
And for the living, all is well
As you sink further into hell
And the flames rise up to drag you down
Into the fire where you will drown
Your skin melts off as you descend
And Satan tears you limb from limb
Your suffering will never end
And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
They'll eat your guts and then shit them out
And when your bones begin to rot
The worms remain, but you do not
So don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by
For someday, you'll be the one to die
And when Death brings his cold despair
Ask yourself, "Will anyone care?"

After seeing the Jangly Man scene, I realized that they actually mix two stories. FAX. The best one was where the head fell down the chimney and you can't tell me otherwise
Lol
Nah the big toe scared the fuck outta me mainly the picture
it's weird because it was so creepy buy in most of the stories the fear was a diversion, or everything turns out okay in the end and people don't die in them, they just get scared.
