Why is no one else emphasizing this: considering Russia's original goals and their spectacular failure, aren't we constantly underestimating Ukraine's potential (and then conveniently deciding it's not worth it to us to help them)? I'm an American who is ashamed of US government moral failure vis a vis Ukraine , ranging from denying any aid and forbidding Ukraine to hit legitimate targets inside Russia to giving just enough to prolong Ukraine's failure, and then defining our limits almost daily so Putin is not just emboldened but knows exactly which tactical moves he can make at every step. It's irrational, immoral and goes against our own interests. Biden isn't even trying to make the case to the American people so the GOP steps in with Russian propaganda. It breaks my heart.

Mr Ingram is spot on . Ukraine does fall back sometimes to just draw the Russians into land mines and ATGM ambushes etc . Even though Russia has suffered large loses they can still fight on for a while longer especially if they just stop advancing and just hold the ground . It will take a few more years to get Russia fully out of Ukraine .
If East Ukrainians want to be Russian, let them. We (UK) learnt our lesson about this in Ireland.

Correct. But the numbers are declining. According to CREA the numbers for EU were 7% in March, so its getting "better" There are a few countries within the EU which are still very dependandt on Russian fossil energy and as of now does not have much alternative. but energy is being rerouted as we speak. It will take quite a while, if ever to totally close down the use of Russian fossil fuels in EU. I have my doubts that we will get below 5% anytime soon.

Another intersting fact regarding this. If EU can reduce the use of Russian fossil fuels from 7 to 5% that would convert to roughly 1,2 Bl euro. That would again convert to approx 2 days cost of maintaining the war for Russia, provided that they cant sell it some place else.

Obligations exist for all signatories to that document. Russia respects and guarantees security. Nuclear weapons are surrendered. Ukraine does not become a security worry for Russia.

Contrary to mister Chelsea, I will give you a balanced answer. The Budapest memorandum is an agreement. It is a piece of paper. Pieces of paper can be ignored. Agreements can be broken. There is no police to stop any country from doing this. Agreements and treaties have been broken thousands of times in the past. There is also no police to go to Russia and take these nuclear weapons back. International relations, diplomacy and war do not follow national laws, where there IS a police to make you follow the rules.

People easily seem to forget that almost all of the replacement of its forces, particularly with regards to tanks, that Russia was able to do was because of the large amounts it had in storage. The fact that those units are now gone means every single tank lost WILL have to be replaced with a brand new one, and that's always going to be slower and more costly even with ramped-up production. In fact, I would argue a significant amount of Russia's increased production capacity is offset by the fact it no longer has most of its sizable stored arsenal of outdated but perfectly usable equipment.
That's to say nothing of the known flaws in all Russian armour that has proven it to be demonstrably inferior to Western-supplied armour, or of the fact that a lot of the new tanks Russia pumps out are older models, because the Armata and similar new designs simply cannot be produced quickly enough. And though Russia would wish for it, it does not appear to be like in WW2 days, where new T-34's were driven straight from the production line at the Stalingrad Tractor Factory into battle at Stalingrad, that simply is not possible with today's tanks, or with Russia's industrial capability.
Also, it's truly ironic that the bulk of USSR tanks before and right up to the early stages of WW2 were built in...Kharkiv, Malyshev Factory. Much like in the war as a whole, it was Ukraine that bore the brunt of the effort, and certainly of the destruction

@@PassivePortfolios Very much so, however it should be said that when it comes to tanks 50s and 60s equipment is not "antique", if utilised correctly they can still pack a punch against lighter armoured vehicles, or of course against infantry. The same is true of aircraft, where many an aircraft from the 60s, and sometimes the 50s too, still fly especially in post-Soviet countries and they're relatively competent, if certainly outdated.
The issue for Russia is that they AREN'T good at utilising even modern tanks correctly, as highly motorised armoured warfare focusing on the "schwerpunkt" and exploiting breakthroughs seems largely a foreign concept to them. The one thing they're good at is firing copious amounts of artillery to ruin a town, and then waltz in and claim to be masters of the strategically worthless rubble

it goes beyond that. Before the war, 12% of Russia's GDP was defense exports. That will be gone for 20 years now. Not only because of how poorly they performed, but because Russia will need to keep it for themselves.

They haven't been 2nd for a long time before this war broke out. Not even close, especially not qualitatively, tactics-wise and leadership-wise. I wouldn't necessarily even say they're 3rd, but either way they're DEFINITELY a weaker military than China's since quite a lot of years. The U.S. DoD has estimated China's real military spending might be twice that the officially stated figure, if that's accurate that would mean around 500 billion USD. That's not far off the U.S.

Their stuff is mostly reversed enginered. But not at a 1:1 scale. They cut corners or try to "optimize" without knowing why a part is shaped as it is, made of the materials they are.
China have a lot steel. They have a lot of electronics
But they dont have good steel, and they dont have cutting edge electronics.
Their metalurgy is inferior.. Like 40 years behind kinda inferior. Their tankbarrels blow up after 30 rounds(just ask india whos one of the few countries who actually bought a batch of chinese tanks), their "nuclear propulsed" ships have diesel engines(unless you need a smokestack for black smoke to get rid of the excess steam in the turbines) - granted, their camo actually work. But thats about it.

What about catapulting, flinging, sling shotting or firing mesh netting from shoulder-held adapted tank missile Javelins, for example, at the glide bombs? We know they are released 4o or more kilometers away, so a military unit could wait for the right moment to send up a net. A net might do one thing: alter the glide bombs ability to hit is programmed target. What I am saying is that could sending up in whatever way possible a steel-meshed net that could ensnare incoming missiles and glide bombs be feasible? Nets used as projectiles might also be a way to ensnare drones and be far less expensive than using guided rockets etc.

Russia are taking catastrophic losses for very little territory. The Soviets did the exact same thing in the 2nd world war. They gave up vast tracts of land to inflict losses on German manpower and make logistics very difficult supplying those forces. It worked.
It worked with Lend Lease equipment.
Modern Russia is in no way comparable to the USSR in WW2.
