    Thanks for explaining the process really well. I left my leathercraft tools for 2 years only to find them rusted. It's my first time cleaning them so your video is so helpful. I now know what to do. Cheers!

    Thanks for sharing this I just bought my first plane and it needs a good go over it’s a Stanley no 4 1/2 the guy who sold it to me said it was his dads and it probably hasn’t seen wood in 40 years he said.
    Not sure if it will need a restoration or not

      If it has been sitting around for 40 years I'm guessing its quite rusty? This doesn't necessarily mean it needs a restoration especially if the handles and japanning is in good condition, even if they aren't the in the best condition the only necessary things to do is remove the rust and refinish the handles if the finish is peeling.

      Hi yes the front handle not doing it does not have any finish ledge on it the back handle is made of some sort of plastic it’s black yes there is a lot right which should hopefully cover of I’ll definitely give it a good go over it’s a Stanley and also says Bailey on the front don’t really know anything about these I’m definitely keen to learn I love working with my hands it’s why I’ve taken wood working up as a hobby to learn what i can and just give it a go I find your videos very helpful

    When Sydney had that very wet month last year all my steel tools rusted, even planes in my tool chest (normally a rust free place).
    I used 1500 and 2000 grit wet and dry sandpaper on float glass to clean the plane bodies. After cleaning with ethanol, I used 3in1 oil to prevent rust as the paste wax was insufficient in such high humidity.
    I'll try the 0000 steel wool and ethanol next time.

      That sounds like a real pain to have every tool rusted. Interesting to know in really high humidity paste wax is insufficient. Thanks for sharing.

      @AussieWoodshed what part of Australia are you located? I'm in the Newcastle area, so similar humidity to the OP. But I'm keen to test out the paste wax on my planes.

      @@danwilson9230 Im located in Perth humidity can get high at times, but im guessing not as high as over your side of the country.

      @danwilson9230 paste wax is generally good rust prevention for steel tool, by creating a barrier to the atmosphere. That wet spell we had was extraordinary and so better rust preventers was needed like a light oil barrier with specific rust prevention additives.
      BTW he's in Perth.

    Good video mate. Perfect timing for me actually. Do you use the paste wax on your saws as well? My veritas tenon saw instructions say not to use beeswax on it. I guess they mean straight Beeswax and not some sort of paste wax because it seems to be a pretty popular method. Any thoughts?

    • @AussieWoodshed
      @AussieWoodshed  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do use paste wax on my saws and have never had an issue. I can only guess as you suggested they mean straight beeswax. However I don't have any Veritas saws, but I can't see it causing any problems. Maybe contact their customer support and ask?

      @@AussieWoodshed Good point. Might send them a message. I'm very new to hand tool woodworking and I live in Central Queensland so I'm worried about tool care and maintenance especially with the humidity here. Thanks for your reply. Your channel has been a great resource for myself as a new woodworker.
