I remember this being the only Barbie movie I never cared that much. There's too much syrup and the plot is weak. And of course the elephant is awful. (Watching this now as an adult is just uncomfortable and corny. The "twist" in the end about the mother is just so lame.)
My favourite barbie movie was absolutely 12 dancing princesses. It also has some syrup but also darkness to balance it.
