Silverado 2011 v6 I changed both the thermostat and temperature sensor .. problem solved Cost me 100$ .. parts and coolant.. engine should be cold when you do it.
If you disconnect battery for anything, do go down fir a safety inspection. It will fail. You must drive upwards of 100 miles to clear that off first. Any code will do the same even if you clear it off.

Do you have to splice the wires together or is there a connector inside the wire loom?

Yes, that is true. Fortunately my inspection is not due for another 6 months.
