Eric the car guy is awesome! I'm glad he took my advice not to give up and just farm out the other parts. He is one of those people that cannot only do the job but do an amazing job of explaining and filming in a very professional and advanced way.

If you didn't see the broken wire and still want to troubleshoot, with the car off, remove the connector that goes to the sensor. With a multimeter, ground the black lead to a good ground. Turn the key on but don't start the engine. Use the red multimeter lead to check the 2 pins in the connector for 5VDC. This will tell you which way you'll need to go next. If you have 5VDC, you're looking for a problem with the ground. Turn off the key and check the other pin for a good ground. Switch the multimeter to resistance. Your black lead is already grounded so use the red lead and put it on the other pin. It should read 0VDC or very close.
So, to sum it up, without buying anything, you've verified the wiring for the 5VDC circuit and it's integrity. If you have 5VDC and a good ground, buy a new sensor. If you're missing the 5VDC or ground, further tracing back in the wiring harness will be needed to complete your troubleshooting. Good luck.

Very professional and well-done video. Hats off to you man. You seem very knowledgeable. In my case I think it’s either an air pocket by the thermostat or the thermostat is not closing all the way. 2004 4runner👍🏼👌🏼

Hey Eric I am having a similar issue. With my 2000 Chevy c 2500 with a 454 Big block. With the code po118. But my temperature gauge in the dashboard is reading correct temperature at normal operating temperature. At 2:10. But still I keep getting the check engine light for po118.

@TRQ Hey Eric, thanks for the very informative video! I am getting this exact code on my vehicle. I have some questions for you. Is my vehicle safe to drive? I am wondering if the engine and coolant are actually running hot. When we tested while idling the engine the temp was fine at 180F. Though it’s not until I drive for awhile does the temp gauge on the dash eventually goes high in the red. I have to take another look to see if the wiring or ECT sensor is the issue. I can try to test the sensor with a multimeter which I have while it’s plugged in. This might be tricky, and check the wiring. If it is the wiring it did not show in the video. Though did you some how twist the wires together after splicing them? I am not sure if you can and should do that. Thanks! 🙏🏽
