While playing with my sisters much larger dog, my Dad's Dachshund was severely hurt. She is paralyzed from the waist down. She's at the very tight now, receiving meds to reduce the swelling but we will bring her home tomorrow. I'm researching home therapy including water therapy, exercises & have gotten a doggie wheel chair. I don't mind admitting that I'm scared to death. Patty was given to my Dad from his brother who has since passed away. Dad is 72 & not in good health. We recently lost my Mom & Patty has been sort of like Dad's therapy dog. Losing his brother, then his wife, Patty is what has kept Dad going. So I HAVE to do everything I can to give Dad back his sweet little Patty. I'm researching water therapy, exercises & anything else that may help. I was told that Epsom salt baths help relax the muscles. I guess we'll see. I'm VERY thankful for the people that took the time to share their stories & help those of us who are in similar situations!!
My little Australian Terrier had this problem, she was lucky enough to have surgery within 24 hours of it happening. She can walk on all fours now and can even squat to pee (albeit shakily) she still needs rehab but I think she might come through it with very little problems.
