- This is a replacement part for Howa mini-action bolt guns. The stock bottom piece is plastic and doesn't hold up well to the 50 in/lbs torque required for the rifle to function optimally.
DiP is selling a metal replacement part, this video illustrates swapping parts from the stock Howa into the DiP metal piece.
Overall the process was quite simple and the part has the option to add laser engraving and looks very nice.
$ 90.00 is a rough estimate on cost.
As a side note - I do NOT recommend buying a Boyd's aftermarket stock for your Howa rifles, especially the 6.5 Grendel. It requires way too much fitting.
Since you are so handy, change the batteries in your smoke detector
Ok I added one of these to my rifle. I also added the new metal magazine latch. To make it easier to put the latch in you need to cut a piece of allen wrench or round stock the same width as the latch make sure you round the end edges. A drimell is a nice tool for this and a pair of vice grips or small vice. Now you can capture the spring in place and press the latch into place with out loosing the spring then press the pin into place. don't forget to tighten the tiny allen screw onto the pin. I fought the install loosing the spring several times until I cut a piece of allen wrench off the width of the latch to secure the spring in place. I know this will help and speed the job up cutting down on the frustration.
The DIP bottom metal and mag release is the best mods you can do to these rifles. Worth every penny.
I recently purchased this same rifle. So far this is the only mod recommended for it. Is there an actual issue with the original plastic piece?
Bryan Postlewait numerous ones have split around the action screws over time and the factory mag release has caused a lot of mags to inadvertently fall out in the field. I experienced that several times myself but was fortunate to find the mags. If you gun is used for just range work alone it’s not a big deal.
@@prevost8686 I actually just dropped the mag on a walk last night. I love the rifle, I'll look into this! Thanks.
You skipped over the entire part where you actually inserted the spring into the new release...
Literally the only part I came to watch....
This doesn't work that well BTW. I still drop the mag frequently
Replace the batteries in your smoke detector
For me, fitting a stock, bedding it with Acraglass, and pillar bedding it is half the fun. Therefore, I love Boyd's stocks. YMMV.
scbane...darn right! Me too.
Why has no one made ar .223 mag compatible bottom metal!? Is there a reason?
The bolt might not be able to feed well from a double stack magazine. The gun was designed for a single stack magazine, I don’t know that a double stack would function well. That’s just a guess though.
I also shortened my mag release lever. After installing it into the DIP metal the spring comes all the way to end of the release. Have I done something wrong?
AR mags would be great.
Mag says 7.62x39 and the receiver says 6.5 Grendel, what's up with that?
Same reason that a 30-06 mag will feed 270 win. Very similar sized cartridges can use the same mags.
Same size brass. 7.62x39 can be converted to 6.5 Grendel.
@@cwarner6054 Learning something new every day, I was not aware they had the same sized brass.
@@PeteJensen84 Not the same size, just from the same family. Case taper on Grendel is much straighter then x39, so it naturally has a much bigger shoulder.
Seriously, if you go to all this trouble, why not make it take AR15 magazines? Grendel, X39 and 223 all have AR style magazines from several manufacturers off the shelf ready to go.

what brand of picatinny rail is that?
Amazon sells these: search for Outerlimits Howa mini action
Rem 700 rails will fit it too.
This is a nice product but installing the mag latch and spring is a bitch. I used a punch to capture the latch and pin and then pushed the pin in as I withdrew the punch. It took several attempts to get things all lined up
