Thanks for sharing. I had a Technics SL1700 Mk2 that was stolen (I loved that turntable). I went through a couple of mundane turntables before I came across a half decent Marantz TT4000 which although I found it to be a great turntable, was not in the league of the SL1700. I then came across a Marantz 1620 with an SME 3009 tonearm on it. One owner since new. After a bit of arm twisting I bought it and I am 100% happy, it (in my opinion) is a good match for my SL1700. Finally, I have the turntable that I will live with probably for the rest of my life.
Great video. I found my father's old Marantz 6300 in the olds man house. Had not been used since mid 80s. Now it's connected and up and running again. Still trying to make it lift and go down so smooth as yours...
I disassembled the cam that lifts and lowers the arm, cleaned it, and used 500,000 wt. silicone oil to slow it down. The original oil in it thins out and stops being effective. 500,000 wt. might have been overkill since it drops REALLY slowly, but it works well and lands very gently on the record. It is no simple task removing that cam. I wish I had documented the process, but I did it many years ago, before I had any thoughts about creating a TH-cam channel. Good luck! Great 1st Video! I'm curious about your headshell and cartridge choice. What brand of headshell is that and can you elaborate your thoughts on the DL-103R? Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words. The headshell is a Jelco. I actually have the original Marantz headshell but I could not get the azimuth dialed in right with it. This Jelco headshell has adjustable azimuth. The Denon DL-103r sounds great. The best way to describe it is it just sounds natural and "right". Sure you could coax out more detail with other more advanced stylus shapes, but the conical on the DL-103r, in combination with this tonearm, just sings.
I have a laundry list of things to work on . I am an original owner of a 6300 which as you know commands an insane price today. Unfortunately it was not stored well. The turntable has a hum that wasn't there the last time I used it, probably a bad ground somewhere. The speed was off which is why I put it up in the first place but working the pots bak and forth took care of that. I will clean them with De Oxit. the solenoid that lifts the arm in auto or cue doesn't respond at all not even a click and all 4 feet are missing,. Cosmetically the rest post is missing the lock clip, some of the veneer is loose and a little chipped and the dust cover is damaged with one hinge missing. It could be worse but still s lot to do. I was happy that I still have the 45rpm puck and the spare Marantz headshell. I notice you went with a very expensive cartridge! Thanks for your video.
I have this turntable. I had it professionally refurbished and it works great. But, I would never take off the badge on the front. To each his own I guess. This was my party turntable from the 1980’s to the zeros. I don’t have a place for it right now but I also have a Marantz 2225 receiver I bought at the same time in the 1970’s. It too has been refurbished. Just waiting to be used again. 😊😊😊
nice turntable much better than some new brands that are selling like crazy but don´t deliver quality just a good cartridge and stylus but that also can be done with a good old machine , i have at least 3 turntables from the 70´s working perfect today with all original with the regular maintenace but still haven´t change the capaciteurs allthough i don´t notice any problem in the output sound and also i haven´t had nothing from marantz but i have some friends who are faithfull to the brand and they (the equipment)sound perfect, regards
What most people don't know is that the 6300, like a lot of Japanese tables, is manufactured by Chuo-Denki (CEC). Are they worth the current asking prices? Absolutely not. The Marantz name still carries a lot of weight but there are much better tables for the same money. But, having said that, I've repaired a lot of these and they are very solid.

Awesome job on the restoration, looks great! I have had 3 of these and while pretty good tables I don't think they are worth anywhere close to the current going rates. Last one I had sold for more than 900 euros (around 1200 usd) which is just crazy. For that money I'd rather get something like a micro seiki dd 40, which has a better motor and a way better tonearm. Or just a very similar turntable that sells for less than half the price, as getting a japanese servo direct drive with similar specs is not all that difficult. Great video regardless, just commenting my 2 cents.
Yes, I think I mentioned the "Marantz" tax in the video. Marantz fans are willing to pay more, hence this turntable goes for more than other similar turntables of the era. I have to say that once I tweaked the tonearm bearings on mine, it really sounded better to me. I wonder if those bearings had a little play in them from the beginning? Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!
@@audioexpo14 yeah and to be fair, it is a very pretty turntable and there are definitely worse things to spend your money on. With tonearms that have that kind of design it's very annoying to get it just right. But once you do it does indeed make a huge difference.
A year or 2 ago, a Marantz 6300 could fetch upwards of $1000 USD on Ebay. I checked Ebay recently and now they are going for upwards of $3000 USD. Crazy, crazy prices.
If the arm is sliding across the record, and assuming nothing else has changed, the stylus (needle) is likely damaged. Take a close look and see if the diamond at the end of the stylus is gone. Probably time for a new stylus.

I can’t tell how it sounds from this video. That said my has been great. All I needed after 40 plus years of use was a new strobe. That was it.

My marantz tonight just started slipping the needle on playing records. Anyone have an answer and what I need to do?
