    I'm going to summarize this person's video in a single sentence: for bases, order 1/10'' thickness and 3/16'' diameter. You're welcome.

      And for anyone wondering what that is in MM, it's 5x3mm. You can also use 12x3mm for bigger bases to save effort!

    Thank you for the video, and a strange side question, but would you happen to remember where you got the tweezers?

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got them on Amazon, just searched “plastic tweezers” and bought a cheap multipack. I couldn’t find any plastic tweezers in local stores so this was the easiest route, and they help a lot since the usual metal tweezers will be magnetic

    TY was looking at storage as I am slowing amassing a number of minies and foam takes up a lot of storage space so was thinking magnets.

  • @TheLichsLaboratory
    @TheLichsLaboratory 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the site link man. I don't normally work with magnets but now with so many minis I may have to consider magnetizing some for some wacky storage shenanigans
    Also once knew a guy who used varying brands of bases so he'd stick his magnets to the bottom of a base with green stuff and press them onto a surface to get them to conform to the perfect height. With a little ring of gel super glue around it as insurance, I imagine it'd be pretty solid, even for large minis

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't do any magnetization of my miniatures myself since I don't really worry about like, load-out switching and things - but I know a lot of people do!
      And yeah, the greenstuff solution definitely works. Personally though I hate having to break the stuff out, and the one time I did greenstuff magnets to my base, it broke off. If I'm gonna glue them on anyway, why not just cut out the greenstuff step entirely?
      Thanks for watching - I always appreciate your support :)

    Hi, nice video man! What type of glue do you use to glue to magnets onto the base? Just superglue?

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep! Just a dot of glue and then slap the magnet down. I use some plastic tweezers to make sure the magnets get in place.

    What do you recommend for 25mm bases? Or will these work for those as well?

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use those for 25mm bases as well, but I've found it's a biiiiit too strong of a connection in that case. If you went some sizes down in either diameter or thickness you'd be perfect!

      I think the Amazon listing on that video might be dead now. But honestly if you go to eBay or Amazon and search for sheet metal, or your local hardware store - anything that you can cut with tin snips and that works with magnets will work great!

      @@thepaintingacolyte I've just come across your content, so not sure what you have done already. I'm getting back into WH after 20+ years (40k 2nd ed baby!), so have some catching up to do.
      Things I wish I learned before splurging on a bunch of paints, was when to use the "slapchop" method. I tried it on my orlocks (undercoated them all black then dry brushed highlights) and it's not suitable, as they have such intricate designs and flexile themes. I'm basically undoing most of my hard work! Don't like the GW paints as they seem to try out v quickly, I'm using vallejo.
      Other videos about how to mix/dilute paints would be great too, get the correct consistency would be useful.
      Also tips on how to do small details. I'm happy with my models, but struggling with very fine details (faces, fingers in gun triggers) etc.
      Subbed!

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for subbing! Those are all great topics. I have a fewww videos on non-traditional painting, nothing quite like a slap chop tutorial or anything like that yet. I’ve shied away from doing tutorials a bit because I very much feel like an amateur painter - but there are tons of topics I’d love to cover like that. Stay tuned and I hope I provide more stuff you like in the future!

    So I ordered these magnets for my Dark Eldar but I worry they are too strong, I’m not able to remove the figure by grabbing the base alone and have to pull on the miniature itself which makes it feel like the mini might snap off. Is this normal? Should I use a different size magnet? Help me magic magnet man!

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Magic magnet man to the rescue!
      I have found that with spindlier models like Drukhari, the size I recommended might be a bit too strong - especially on 28mm or smaller bases. For anything that small/spindly, I’d recommend using smaller magnets. It also definitely depends on what you’re sticking your minis too. Using sheet metal, you can get by with weaker magnets. With weaker materials you need stronger magnets. I hope that helps - let me know what you’re working with and I’ll see if I can help more!

    • @ezekyle1abaddon
      @ezekyle1abaddon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thepaintingacolyte Thanks so much for the speedy reply and the information. I think it might just be that the Battlefoam stuff is super strong and so combined with this it’s a bit much. I’m going to try putting a sheet of paper between the metal and the magnet and see if that helps weaken it enough. Otherwise I plan to buy more magnets in a better size would your recommend just going down in diameter? I’m using basic Drukhari minis mostly Kabalites and Scourges which are extra thin. So snapping is a big concern. Let me know if there is a specific size you think works better for the elvish or if going down a diameter size on K&J is enough.

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to help :) I can’t say I’ve ever used battlefoam but if it’s something similar to sheet metal and you’re worried about minis on small bases - that all checks out. Drukhari are definitely prone to breaking like that. A sheet of paper might work, if that’s not enough you could try several layers of paper towel as well until you weaken the connection enough.
      For smaller bases you can go down in height or diameter really. I’ve used really REALLY tiny magnets on stuff like 20mm bases and even if they aren’t touching the sheet metal they still hold.

    So I just went in and measured several miniatures and I come up with .110 of an inch. So yes 1/10 of an inch or .1 will work. It with be .010 away from the metal tray they sit on.

    I have some 3/32'' thickness magnets from K&J, I find them a tad to tall for the base of my Howling Banshees.
    They work great on larger bases like Space Marines.
    Anyone had same issue?

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah smaller bases and spindlier models can be a bit more difficult - in this situations, shorter magnets is usually a good solution

    • @thepaintingacolyte

      Wonderful, glad it was helpful! They should work perfectly, especially if you’re using GW bases (most of my bases are from GW models, so I’ve used them mostly on those). I didn’t test square bases as I have none, so I can’t be certain about those, but everything else I’ve tried them on has worked great!

    You know with calipers you could just measure the depth of the base. This way you don’t have to buy several sizes, to see which one works.

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall correctly (it’s been a while!) I did do this but ultimately didn’t really trust my own measurements since the calipers I have are pretty junky and I’m not good at this kinda stuff lol

    in your upcoming storage video, can you touch on various magnetic materials that work well and could be used as a storage bottom liners

  • @morkak1130
    @morkak1130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When adding magnets to the bottom of bases I like to use hotglue, I hotglue a magnet into the bottom, and then I press it onto parchment paper. I find that makes a much more flat bond then just putting the magnet on super glue. Like in this video th-cam.com/video/D6QPE2Su_Ks/w-d-xo.html

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s not a bad idea and would certainly work fine. In my personal experience though hot glue breaks off pretty easily, so unless you’re using tiny magnets (which won’t have a lot of sticking power) I would be afraid of ripping off the hot glue when i would remove my minis from the sheet metal storage.

    • @morkak1130
      @morkak1130 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thepaintingacolyte ah that makes sense. I have been using hotglue for about a year now and I have not had it rip off. But at the same time I dont play often so I dont pick the minis up often.

    • @thepaintingacolyte
      @thepaintingacolyte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Super fair. I think superglue would ultimately work fine for most people most of the time, but I've had magnets secured by greenstuff rip off when I try to move the miniatures, so I think my setup is the safest and easiest for me!@@morkak1130
