  • Hint: It’s why every site asks you to accept cookies.
Join the Open Sourced Reporting Network: www.vox.com/opensourcednetwork
You’ve seen the pop-ups: “This site uses cookies to improve your experience. Please accept cookies.”
Cookies do improve your experience. They function as the website’s short term memory; with each new click you make, cookies help the site identify you as the same person. Imagine every time you add something to your cart and click away, it disappears. Or each time you load a new page on Facebook, you have to log in again. Without cookies, the online world we know today couldn’t exist.
But that world relies on advertising, which gives three kinds of companies a strong incentive to track your online behavior. Brands want to sell products by serving you ads for things you’re likely to buy. Platforms and publishers - like Vox - want to make money by serving those ads when you’re on their site. And middlemen are in the business of ensuring the ads from the brands are delivered to the right people.
In this video, we explain how cookies work and what you should know about how they’re being used. And we get a little help from the man who invented them.

@@xute89 poor people can barely save money, they mostly have to spend it on necessary things. The rest of the money goes to the few luxuray things (like a watch etc.) they can afford from time to time. More salary won't make the poor guy necessarily spend more money on products, he would probably save that additional money for years which doesn't add to the profit the many companies want to make.

The truth is you can’t access the internet privately unless you’re a professional hacker with some sophisticated tools at your disposal. There are so many middle men between you and the internet, there’s your ISP, telecom companies if you’re using mobile data, there are internet protocols that website follow then some regulations imposed by your country’s government etc. Also IP address and cookies aren’t the only way website can recognise you by, there’s your browser configuration, the number of apps you have installed of your device, your location, timestamps, what you search for, what you click, your online behaviour, your writing style etc and each of these are demonstrated to be able to uniquely identify you. Google can identify you even on anonymous internet forums. Privacy is just an imagination.

@zulfikangga 1. Google doesn't sell ads to it's consumers, it just acts as a third-party for advertisers. You use the app for free - they take care of the management costs etc
      2. If you hate ads so much,TH-cam offers a premium version without ads 🙄
      3. Hate ads all you want at least without them the internet would be worse as everyone would have been required to to pay a fee in order to access a webpage coz the servers aren't free 😒

Cookies are stored on your computer. You can delete them, but remember their servers store info as well. So deleting cookies won't fully remove their tracking of you.
Try it. Delete all cookies and see what happens. If you're logged in somewhere, you'll notice you'll stay logged in to the site because servers store your info through server variables in the code that track your IP address and your Computer's MAC address (your computer's "signature").
And when I designed websites years ago, I preferred those server variables over cookies because cookies can be deleted and all the info is gone. So I used cookies for temporary storage (which you might see "TEMP" written in the cookies' title).
Remember that deleting cookies won't solve everything.

The latest reports in academia say that advertising, especially traditional advertising, just doesn't work. People will buy what they are already interested in buying and some reports suggest that shoving it in their faces can make people less apt to purchase that brand. But then, people don't seem to care what academics think anymore...
