    Marketing is constantly begging for our attention. We’re surrounded by lights, photos, and countless advertisements everywhere we go. The constant traffic in our vision is effective, but there’s another form of marketing that’s almost too subtle to detect, and yet research has shown that it might be the most effective of all: the marketing for your nose.
    The Goods by Vox explains what we buy, why we buy it, and why it matters.

    I think Disney is the most fascinating example of this. They pump out the scent of vanilla on Main Street to entice you to buy ice cream, they pump out the scent of saltwater in the area surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean to get you to go on the ride, and all their popcorn stands pump out the smell of buttery popcorn to get you to buy a bag. And those are just the examples I can think about. Disney is an expert on using scents to attract their customers

      They also use bromine instead of chlorine in their water attractions because the smell is more pleasant, even though it is more expensive. (There are a couple other reasons too, but the more pleasant, non-chlorine scent is one of the main ones)

      @Mr. 8-Bit Doggo 'Choice' is such a great way to obfuscate the issue - if something is profitable and more effective, it will be universally adopted, and a consumer will have the choice to either accept these practices or not participate in society.

    • @rasheednesbitt8667
      @rasheednesbitt8667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean, you could apply the same logic to a grocery store making sure their interior is clean and visually appealing, or a frozen yogurt place decorating their building with bright colors. The whole idea is to improve the customer’s experience in some way to increase the chance that they will buy something. It really isn’t that deep.

    • @seanrenner3361
      @seanrenner3361 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rasheednesbitt8667 I take your point, but I disagree. I think it is THAT deep. The whole conversation hinges on the intentionality of those doing the marketing. We don't share an ultimate purpose with one another and that leads to an endless masterbatory go round of ethical dilemmas and moral quandaries. You have to have a shared baseline metric. It seems the two conflicting thoughts are: maximizing consumerism as a baseline or maximizing transparent information for human choices. I fall on the latter.

    I HATE SCENT MARKETING! I cannot even go in stores like Hollister or Bath and Body Works. I feel like I can’t breathe, and get a splitting headache that can last for days... my longest migraine was 19 days, I literally thought I was going to have a headache the rest of my life. What kicked it off? LAVENDER. Apparently I’m allergic to the scent that everyone thinks is soothing. I even have to use public bathrooms AND NOT WASH MY HANDS because of the industrial strength lavender soap.
    From an autistic person with sensory overload AND scent allergies, I beg for this practice to stop. I’m sick of feeling sick in public. There’s a reason I’m wearing a face mask in my picture, it’s so I can actually breathe in public.

      Yes! For those of us with chronic lung conditions like asthma or with other fragrance sensitivities, these artificial fragrances can be very problematic. While essential oils and other natural chemicals are less troublesome (unless you are allergic to some component), many of these "perfume" and "artificial fragrance" chemicals are bad for people, the planet, and animals. Please STOP it!

      Marketing on today's massive scale has never existed before. Its growth has been incentivised by the sale and purchase of commodities under the ever-more pervasive capitalist economy. Capitalism as a wide-scale mode of production has only existed for three centuries; in most countries even less. I don't know what people you have spoken to, but the people I speak to generally frown upon marketing of the type presented in the video.

    One of my old bosses owned a taco-truck kind of thing (I forget what he sold but it wasn't tacos). His son was about 8 when he had the idea of trying pan-frying onions and garlic for the smell and that's it. All they did was cut up onions and garlic, fry it in a pan and blow the exhaust through a vent that pumped out the bottom of the truck in the direction of the people walking past.
    Totally worked. Sales went way up. :-) After that they ran a fan in the top of the truck that pumped the smells from the inside out the bottom and toward passersby. Whatever they were cooking, everyone smelled it.

    There's a clothing store here in Europe (not sure if it's elsewhere too) called Stradivarius, that has an insanely strong smell that to me smells exactly like Abercrombie & Fitch... Do you think that's an intentional connection, so whatever opinions you have of A&F are projected onto Stradivarius?

    The olfactory sensation is a lot stronger than visual or auditory sensations. And thats because the olfactory stimuli are not filtered in the thalamus (visual/auditory are filtered there)

    Huh.... Ya know I always loved going to Chapters because of the smell of books and coffee. Like when online ordering came around, I started buying everything I could online, but for books I still went to Chapters because I just love the environment so much, in fact I often just go there even when I'm not buying anything bc I love the environment so much.............. Huh.
    (Chapters is the Canadian book store monopoly, like Barnes and Noble I think?)

    I think sometimes scent marketing can really scare people off though. My Mum and I refuse to enter a Lush, Dusk or Moontree store because of the overload of smells. Obviously some of these are genuinely from the products, but they still have to be adding something. Headache and allergies every time!

    Fun fact: At Cinnabon - you know that delicious cinnamon smell? We used to take a brick of margarine, a little bit of vanilla, and a cup of cinnamon sugar and put it in a baking dish. By keeping this at 200°F for 20 minutes, the whole food court would smell like it. That’s why, if you’ve made cinnamon rolls at home, that the smell isn’t as strong.
